Use FFmpeg’s xfade filter inside -filter_complex, then encode the filtered video and send it to YouTube Live. Set duration for the transition length and offset for when it begins. The video example below crossfades two clips, but its audio mapping keeps only the first input’s optional audio; audio needs its own plan.
Crossfade two videos live with FFmpeg
Replace the destination with the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. This basic command assumes compatible inputs and a two-second fade beginning eight seconds into the first input’s timeline:

"rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"xfade is a video filter. FFmpeg’s filter documentation covers its transition types, duration, and offset; its command documentation explains complex filtergraphs and mapping labeled outputs. See FFmpeg filters and FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Set offsets when chaining more clips
For three or more clips, chain xfade filters in the same complex graph, label each intermediate video output, and map the final label. Calculate each later offset against the timeline already produced by the preceding clips. Because each transition overlaps part of that timeline, the next offset is not necessarily the sum of source-file start times or simply the next clip’s starting timestamp.

Use the actual clip durations and chosen transition lengths to calculate offsets. The right values depend on your media and intended sequence; the example’s value of 8 is illustrative, not a universal setting.
Choose what happens to the audio
Video and audio transitions are separate. Decide whether the program should blend the clips’ sound or retain a continuous music, narration, or other audio source.

Blend the two clips’ audio
Use FFmpeg’s acrossfade audio filter in the complex graph, connect the two audio inputs to it, label its output, and map that label instead of 0:a?. The audio filter has its own configurable crossfade duration. Check that both inputs actually contain audio and adjust the graph and mapping if they do not. See the FFmpeg filter documentation.
Keep continuous program audio
Map the intended music or narration source instead of automatically choosing the first clip’s audio. Make sure the output contains the audio track the broadcast needs; a video crossfade alone does not create one.

Make inputs compatible if xfade fails
The example assumes the decoded video streams satisfy the installed xfade filter’s requirements. If FFmpeg reports mismatched parameters or cannot initialize the filter, inspect the installed build’s filter help and normalize the inputs as needed. Common properties to check include frame rate, time base, dimensions, and pixel format.
There is no universal normalization chain that can be safely prescribed for every pair of files. Check each input’s properties and choose compatible values before constructing the graph. Also confirm that your FFmpeg build includes the filter and that the transition options you request are available.

Encode the filtered video and meet YouTube’s ingest guidance
A crossfade changes decoded video frames, so FFmpeg must encode the filtered output. Do not use -c:v copy for the video: stream copy bypasses decoding and filtering. FFmpeg’s command documentation explains that filtering is a typical reason to transcode and that streams are transcoded by default unless copying is requested.

It recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Choose a supported combination that your encoder, machine, and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s published figure for 1080p at 30 fps with H.264 is 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; this is platform guidance, not a guarantee that your connection can maintain that rate. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its resolution- and codec-specific recommendations.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, get the ingest address and stream key for the broadcast. Replace the example destination with those values, and keep the key private.
- Choose an output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio codec, and keyframe interval supported by YouTube and sustainable on your system and connection. For the example command,
libx264encodes H.264 video andaacencodes audio. - Run a test before the event. YouTube recommends testing audio and video movement similar to the planned stream.
- Check the incoming stream and monitor stream health during the broadcast. If the video or audio is wrong, stop and correct the graph or output settings before continuing.
Diagnose common failures
xfadewill not initialize or reports mismatched parameters: inspect the inputs and installed filter help; make the streams compatible in frame rate, time base, dimensions, and pixel format as needed.- The transition occurs at the wrong time: recalculate
offseton the active, already-combined timeline. When chaining filters, account for the overlap from earlier transitions. - The picture cuts or the command rejects stream copy: encode the filtered video, for example with
-c:v libx264;-c:v copycannot apply a decoded-frame filter. - One clip’s sound continues abruptly, or the second clip is silent: the example maps only input 0’s optional audio. Use
acrossfadefor a clip-audio blend or map the continuous audio source you intend to broadcast. - YouTube does not receive the stream: verify the RTMPS ingest address and stream key copied from Live Control Room, then check that the selected encoder settings are supported and that the upload connection can sustain them.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: review the selected bitrate and output settings against YouTube’s current guidance, and monitor the test stream before going live.
Account for YouTube’s content rules
A successful FFmpeg connection does not establish that you have permission to stream the material or that it complies with YouTube’s policies. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content rules for your channel and material. The encoder settings page is technical guidance, not a grant of content rights.
