You do not need an easy-mode setting to make Elden Ring more manageable. The most reliable approach is to leave a fight that feels overwhelming, explore for stronger flasks and upgrade materials, invest early levels in survivability, keep your equipment light enough for a normal roll, and use Spirit Ashes when the game permits them. Guidance of Grace can keep your main-story route visible while side dungeons supply rewards that make later fights less punishing. These choices reduce combat pressure without asking you to skip the exploration, discoveries, and major story areas that define the game.
What “easier” means in Elden Ring
Elden Ring’s official beginner and advanced guides describe systems that let you reduce risk, but they do not document a conventional selectable difficulty setting. Instead, difficulty is adjustable through preparation and the way you approach each encounter. You can make a boss attempt safer without turning the game into a different mode.

There is no universal best option. A summon helps during a specific encounter; Vigor helps you survive mistakes everywhere; exploration can provide several improvements at once; and Grace helps you decide where to go next. Combining them is more effective than treating any single system as a shortcut.

The fastest way to make a difficult encounter manageable is often to stop repeating it. Elden Ring’s open structure lets you return later with more health, better flasks, a reinforced weapon or a Spirit Ash that suits your play style. Leaving is progress, not failure.

- Mark the encounter and withdraw. Use the map or your own notes so you can return without losing the location.
- Search nearby routes and earlier regions. Look for side dungeons, caves, tunnels, map fragments and sites of grace rather than riding straight toward another major boss.
- Improve flask capacity and effectiveness. Golden Seeds increase the number of flask uses, while Sacred Tears improve how much each use restores. The official gameplay overview identifies both as exploration rewards.
- Collect upgrade materials. Tunnels are a source of smithing stones for weapons. Catacombs can provide materials used to upgrade Spirit Ashes.
- Spend levels on the problem you are actually having. If attacks kill you quickly, prioritize Vigor. If you cannot dodge or attack without exhausting stamina, consider Endurance and your equipment load.
- Return and test one change at a time. A stronger flask, a weapon upgrade or a summon gives you useful information about what was holding you back.
This loop preserves the game’s central rhythm: explore, discover, improve and attempt the difficult area again. No side activity is established as mandatory, so take the detours that solve your current problem rather than trying to clear everything.
Build for survival before chasing damage
Put early levels into Vigor when survivability is the problem
Bandai Namco’s beginner stats guide defines Vigor as the attribute governing health. Raising it is a straightforward way to survive an additional hit, recover from a mistake and learn a boss’s pattern without restarting immediately. It is a practical early investment for any character that is struggling, regardless of whether the final build uses melee, magic or a hybrid approach.
Do not treat one universal level target as mandatory. The right amount depends on your equipment, weapon requirements, damage avoidance and comfort with the encounter. The useful test is concrete: after raising Vigor, can you survive the attacks that previously ended the attempt before you had time to react?
Use Endurance for stamina and equipment load
The same guide defines Endurance as affecting stamina and equipment load. More stamina gives you room to attack, block or sprint and still dodge. More load capacity lets you wear protective gear without pushing your roll into a slower category.
If you are repeatedly caught because your character moves sluggishly, Endurance may solve more than another point of damage. Check the character status screen after changing armor, shields, talismans or weapons; every item contributes to the total load.
Know the normal-roll threshold
The official advanced stats guide describes a normal roll at a 30%–69.9% equipment-load ratio and a heavy roll at 70%–99.9%. The ratio compares your current equipment weight with your maximum load. Staying below the heavy-roll threshold is the key practical rule. A normal roll gives you a more dependable dodge than a heavy roll, which is especially important while learning boss timing.
You do not need the lightest possible load. If removing one piece of armor drops you below 70%, that may be a better trade than sacrificing protection everywhere. Recheck the ratio whenever you equip a larger weapon or shield.

The beginner guide lists eight attributes: Vigor, Mind, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith and Arcane. Vigor and Endurance address the most common “I die too fast” and “I cannot move” problems. Mind, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith and Arcane support different resource or weapon requirements. Choose damage attributes to meet the requirements of the weapon or spell you actually use; spreading points across every attribute usually makes a struggling character less focused.

Use Spirit Ashes as intended support
Bandai Namco’s release announcement says: “Players can also summon spirits they find on their journey to fight alongside them to help even the odds against tougher foes.” Spirit Ashes are therefore an intended part of the game’s toolset, not an invalid way to play.
How to decide when to summon
- Try a Spirit Ash when the encounter provides the in-game opportunity to summon and you want help dividing the enemy’s attention.
- Use the summon to create openings for healing, charged attacks, spells or repositioning rather than standing still and expecting it to win alone.
- If a spirit dies quickly, consider upgrading it with materials found through catacomb exploration or choose a different spirit whose behavior better fits the arena.
- Do not assume every boss, field encounter or multiplayer situation has identical summon rules. Exact restrictions and encounter rankings are not established here; follow the summon indicator and the game’s own interface.
A summon can lower immediate pressure, but it does not remove the need to learn spacing. Treat it as another option alongside a better weapon, a larger health pool and a normal roll.
Explore for rewards that directly improve difficult fights
Find Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears
The official beginner gameplay overview recommends exploration for Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears. Golden Seeds increase how many flask uses you have; Sacred Tears increase the effectiveness of those uses. More healing changes how many mistakes you can survive during both ordinary travel and a boss attempt.
When you reach a new region, inspect roads, churches, minor landmarks and side paths instead of following only the most obvious castle or boss marker. The aim is not to collect every item. It is to notice improvements that make your next serious attempt less fragile.
Visit tunnels for smithing stones
Tunnels are specifically identified as a source of smithing stones. If your weapon feels weak against enemies you can otherwise handle, a tunnel detour may provide the materials needed to reinforce it. Weapon upgrades often give a more immediate combat improvement than distributing a few levels among several damage attributes.
Watch for the visual and environmental signs of a mining area, and return to the hub or appropriate upgrade interface when you have enough materials. Keep the weapon you actually use upgraded rather than saving every stone for a hypothetical future build.
Clear catacombs for Spirit Ash materials
Catacombs can provide materials for upgrading Spirit Ashes. This makes them especially useful if you have decided to rely on summons but find that your current spirit cannot survive long enough to help. Their rewards also make them worthwhile detours when a main-route boss is too demanding.

Use caves for crafting supplies
Caves can provide crafting materials. Crafting is not a replacement for Vigor, flasks or weapon upgrades, but supplies gathered during exploration can give you more options for a particular area. Gather materials naturally while traveling rather than making a separate, repetitive farming routine unless you have identified a specific item you need.

Treat Evergaols as optional challenge rooms
Evergaols are standalone boss fights with rewards. They can be useful practice or a source of equipment, but they are not a requirement for reaching the main story. If an Evergaol is currently harder than your main objective, mark it and return after upgrading. Optional content should give you choices, not another obligation.
Follow Guidance of Grace without letting it hide the rest of the game
Guidance of Grace points toward key locations, including legacy dungeons, major bosses and important areas. Use those trails as a navigational spine when you are unsure where the main story continues. They are not a complete list of everything worth doing.
A two-track route that preserves exploration
- Use Grace to identify your next main destination. This keeps the story moving and prevents aimless wandering when you want a clear objective.
- Before entering the destination, scan the surrounding region. Check for a nearby tunnel, catacomb, cave, church, map fragment or site of grace.
- Choose one or two detours that address your current weakness. Prioritize flasks if healing is the issue, tunnels if damage is low, or catacombs if you want stronger Spirit Ashes.
- Return to the main route when the detours stop producing useful upgrades. You do not need to exhaust every marker to preserve the game’s best content.
The official gameplay overview describes side dungeons and their rewards alongside the main route. This supports combining story progress with selective exploration, but it does not establish an exhaustive quest-by-quest checklist or guarantee that any particular route preserves every quest outcome. If a character’s story matters to you, speak with characters when you meet them, note their locations and revisit them after major story changes rather than assuming Grace will track them.

- Are you using a weapon you meet the attribute requirements for?
- Has that weapon been reinforced with the smithing stones currently available to you?
- Have you collected nearby Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears that you can reasonably reach?
- Is your equipment-load ratio below 70%, keeping you in the normal-roll range described by the advanced guide?
- Do you have enough Vigor to survive at least the attacks that previously ended the attempt immediately?
- Are you spending stamina on attacks that leave enough for an emergency dodge?
- Does the encounter allow the Spirit Ash option, and have you upgraded the spirit you intend to use?
- Have you learned one dangerous attack well enough to recognize its tell, rather than trying to memorize the entire fight at once?
If several answers are no, exploration is likely to help more than another immediate attempt. If most are yes, focus on one behavior: staying at a safer distance, delaying a heal until an opening, or refusing one greedy extra attack.

“I die in one or two hits.”
Raise Vigor, improve flask effectiveness with Sacred Tears and consider whether your armor and equipment choices leave you in a normal-roll range. Then return to the fight to see whether the additional survivability changes which attacks you can safely learn.
“My dodge feels slow.”
Check your equipment-load ratio. At 70%–99.9%, the advanced guide classifies the roll as heavy. Remove or replace one heavy item, increase Endurance or change the weapon and shield combination until the ratio is below 70%.
“I run out of stamina before I can escape.”
Consider Endurance, reduce unnecessary swings and avoid sprinting into an attack with no stamina left. A normal roll helps only if you reserve stamina to use it.
“The boss barely takes damage.”
Explore a tunnel for smithing stones, reinforce your primary weapon and make sure your attributes meet its requirements. If the area still feels disproportionate, leave and return after gaining levels through ordinary exploration.

“My summon disappears immediately.”
Upgrade the Spirit Ash with materials from catacombs, try a different spirit and use the summon to create brief openings rather than relying on it to hold the boss indefinitely. The available evidence does not establish a universal ranking of spirits, so test the options you have found.
“I do not know where the story goes next.”
Rest at a site of grace and inspect its Guidance of Grace. Follow the indicated main destination, then take a short regional detour for upgrades before committing to the next major encounter.
Base game and Shadow of the Erdtree are separate decisions
Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion for the base game. It adds a separate Land of Shadow with additional weapons, equipment, enemies, bosses and plotlines, and the official expansion page states that the base game is required. It is optional additional content, not a prerequisite for exploring the base game or finishing its main progression.

For a player trying to make the original game easier, buying the expansion is not a difficulty solution. Use the base-game systems described above first. Consider the expansion only when you want its separate world and story and already own the required base game.
Keep the game updated, but do not buy content for difficulty reasons
Bandai Namco’s version 1.17 patch notes are dated August 27, 2026 and list PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Apply the latest update available for your platform before relying on balance-specific advice; patch behavior can change over time.
The official site also lists the Tarnished Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 and the Tarnished Pack for PlayStation, Xbox and Steam. A Bandai Namco community notice dated August 31, 2026 lists the Tarnished Pack’s standard price as $4.99, with local-currency variation. Its starting classes and cosmetics are not needed for the survival, exploration or summon strategies in this guide, so purchasing it is not a requirement for making the game easier.
A low-pressure progression plan
- Start with a survivable loadout. Keep equipment below the heavy-roll threshold and choose a weapon whose requirements you meet.
- Spend early levels where they solve deaths. Use Vigor for health and Endurance for stamina or load problems before spreading points across several damage attributes.
- Use Grace for direction. Identify the next story location, then inspect nearby optional areas.
- Upgrade before forcing a boss. Visit tunnels for smithing stones, collect flask upgrades and explore catacombs if you want stronger Spirit Ashes.
- Summon when available. Let the spirit divide attention while you practice safe attacks and healing windows.
- Return after each meaningful improvement. If the fight remains unreasonable, repeat the loop in another region rather than assuming you have reached a hard skill gate.
This approach keeps the main story, open-world discovery and optional rewards intact while lowering the cost of mistakes. You are not skipping Elden Ring’s content; you are using the systems the game provides to decide when and how to face it.
