Harvest kelp from an ocean, then dry it in a furnace, smoker, or campfire to make dried kelp. The quickest way to collect a stalk is to break its bottom block; the kelp above it breaks as well, according to Minecraft’s guide to kelp.
How to make dried kelp
- Find kelp in an ocean. Minecraft says kelp appears in most oceans. Break the bottom block of a stalk to collect the sections above it too.
- Dry the kelp. Place kelp in a furnace or smoker, or use a campfire. Each is listed as a way to turn kelp into dried kelp; Minecraft’s guide does not compare their speed or fuel use.
What you can do with dried kelp
Dried kelp can be eaten for a small hunger top-up or composted. Minecraft describes one piece as restoring half a hunger point and providing a small amount of saturation.

Craft a dried-kelp block
Minecraft’s April 20, 2023 guide gives a recipe of nine dried-kelp items for one dried-kelp block. An older Java Edition 1.13 release note says eight. The sources do not establish whether that difference reflects a recipe change or edition-specific behavior, so use the nine-item recipe from the later guide rather than treating the historical figure as current across editions.
Use the block as fuel
A dried-kelp block can fuel a furnace, blast furnace, or smoker. Minecraft’s 2023 guide says a block burns for 200 seconds and can smelt 20 items. Those figures are from that guide, which does not specify the game edition or version.

Edition and version note
The drying method and recipe figures above come from Minecraft’s guide published in 2023, which does not identify an edition or version. Historical Java and Bedrock notes establish that dried kelp and kelp blocks existed in those versions, but do not establish that current recipes match across editions. For a current edition-specific recipe, check the crafting interface in your game.
