How to Make DIY Pokémon Christmas Ornaments at Home: 4 Easy Methods

You can make recognizable Pokémon Christmas ornaments with four practical methods: bake a durable polymer-clay Poké Ball or Pikachu, decorate a clear fillable ornament for the quickest three-dimensional result, fold an official Glaceon paper snowflake for the lowest-cost project, or assemble printable Pokémon cones for a classroom or party batch. The instructions below cover materials, exact clay-baking guidance, hanging hardware, child-safety considerations, and ways to choose the right method for your time and space.

Choose the right Pokémon ornament method

Start by deciding whether you value durability, speed, low cost, or easy group participation. The four methods produce different kinds of decorations, so choosing first prevents buying materials you will not use.

Method Best use What the finished ornament is like Key trade-off
Polymer-clay Pikachu or Poké Ball A keepsake you can reuse for many Christmases Solid, sculptural and highly customizable Requires conditioning clay, detailed shaping and oven curing
Clear fillable Poké Ball The fastest three-dimensional project A lightweight sphere with painted or inserted red and white halves Needs a clear plastic fillable ornament blank and paint or paint pens
Glaceon paper snowflake The lowest-cost individual craft A flat, printable paper decoration Paper needs careful cutting and protection from heat and moisture
Printable Pokémon cone Children, classrooms, parties and large batches A folded character cone that can be decorated Uses glue and paper embellishments rather than a durable molded form

Polymer clay gives you the most control over size, expression and surface details. A clear fillable ball is easier when the priority is a recognizable Poké Ball shape without sculpting. The paper designs need the fewest supplies, while the cone templates make it practical to prepare many ornaments in one session.

Materials and workspace checklist

For a polymer-clay Pikachu or Poké Ball

  • Oven-bake polymer clay in the colors your design requires: yellow, red, white and black cover the basic Pikachu and Poké Ball projects.
  • A protected work surface so uncured clay does not contact furniture.
  • An oven-safe baking sheet or mat.
  • A toothpick or sculpting tool for eyes, cheek marks, seams and other small details.
  • Ribbon or string for hanging.
  • A small hole made before curing, or an eye screw embedded securely while the clay is still workable.

For a clear fillable Poké Ball

  • A clear plastic fillable Christmas ornament that opens into two halves.
  • Red and white acrylic paint or paint pens, depending on whether you are painting the outside or adding colored pieces inside.
  • Black paint for the center band and a contrasting color for the center button.
  • Ribbon or string.

For paper ornaments

  • Printer paper for the official Glaceon snowflake or a printable Pokémon cone.
  • Scissors; use child-safe scissors with supervision for young makers.
  • Tape or string for the Glaceon design.
  • Glue, pipe cleaners and sparkle glue for the cone templates.

Keep uncured clay away from fabric and finished furniture. Set aside a clean area for painted parts, because ribbon should not be attached until the paint is fully dry.

Method 1: Make a durable polymer-clay Poké Ball

A Poké Ball is the easiest clay design to recognize because it relies on a red-and-white split, a black center band and a button. Work at a small size that remains thick enough to handle, but keep the thickness consistent so the package curing schedule applies evenly.

Step 1: Condition and divide the clay

  1. Warm and knead the red, white and black clay until each color is smooth and flexible. Conditioning removes crumbly texture and makes the pieces less likely to crack while you shape them.
  2. Roll the main body into a compact sphere. Divide the amount of clay before you begin if you want several ornaments with matching dimensions.
  3. Reserve a small amount of black clay for the center band and a small amount of white clay, or another contrasting color, for the center button.

Step 2: Create the two-color body

  1. Make a red half and a white half that fit together around the same center line. Press the join gently rather than flattening the sphere.
  2. Smooth the surface with your fingers or a clean tool. A protected work surface helps keep dust and stray fibers out of the clay.
  3. Roll a thin black strip and wrap it around the equator. Press only enough to make it adhere; an overly deep strip can distort the sphere.
  4. Add the center button over the band. A tiny raised circle is enough to read clearly once the ornament hangs on a tree.

Step 3: Add the hanging point before curing

Make a small hole near the top with a toothpick, or embed a suitable eye screw while the clay is soft. Leave enough clay around the hole that the cured ornament will not tear when ribbon is pulled through. Check that the ornament is balanced before baking.

Step 4: Cure according to the clay package

Sculpey’s published project guidance specifies 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼ inch (6 mm) of thickness. That figure is a thickness-based schedule, not a universal setting for every polymer-clay product, so read the package for the clay you actually use and follow its temperature, time and ventilation instructions. Place the ornament on an oven-safe sheet or mat, and do not increase the temperature to shorten the process.

Step 5: Cool and finish

Let the ornament cool completely before handling the hanging point. Inspect the band and button for loose edges, then thread ribbon or string through the hole or eye screw. If you painted any cured details, allow them to dry fully before the ornament touches other decorations.

Method 2: Turn the clay design into a Pikachu ornament

A flat Pikachu face is a good alternative when you want a character rather than a sphere. The visual priorities are a yellow face, long ears, red cheeks and black ear tips; those features remain readable even when the ornament is small.

Shape the face

  1. Condition yellow clay and form a shallow, rounded face rather than a thick ball. A consistent thickness makes curing more predictable.
  2. Pinch or attach two long ears. Keep their bases broad enough to join the face securely.
  3. Add black tips to the ears, then press red cheek circles onto both sides of the face.
  4. Use a toothpick or sculpting tool to mark eyes, a small nose and a smiling mouth. Simple, high-contrast marks work better than tiny complex details.

Prepare it for the tree

Make a hole at the top center or embed an eye screw before curing. Check that the ears do not catch on the oven rack or baking mat. Cure using the clay manufacturer’s instructions, applying the same thickness rule to the face and ears. After cooling, add ribbon and keep the ornament away from branches or hooks that could bend the ears.

Method 3: Make a clear fillable Poké Ball ornament

This is the fastest way to get a three-dimensional Poké Ball silhouette. A clear plastic fillable Christmas ornament provides the two-part spherical base used in the Geeky Gryphons tutorial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the blank

  1. Open the two halves and wash or wipe them according to the blank’s instructions. Let them dry completely so paint adheres.
  2. Decide whether the red and white sections will be painted on the outside or represented by colored paper or other inserts inside. Painting the outside gives a crisp graphic effect; inserts keep the clear surface smooth.
  3. Mark the equator lightly so the two color fields meet evenly when the halves are closed.

Add the Poké Ball details

  1. Paint or insert the red upper section and white lower section. Allow each painted layer to dry before handling the edge.
  2. Add the black center band around the join. Paint pens are useful for a controlled line on a curved surface.
  3. Place the center button over the band. A simple white or contrasting circle is enough to establish the design.
  4. Close the two halves only after all paint is dry. Attach ribbon or string to the ornament’s existing cap or loop.

Because the ornament is hollow plastic, avoid overloading it with heavy filler. Test the loop with the finished weight before placing it high on a tree, and keep painted surfaces from rubbing against rough branches while they cure.

Method 4: Fold an official Glaceon paper snowflake

The Glaceon snowflake is the lowest-cost option: paper, scissors and tape or string are the complete core supply list. It works well when you need several decorations without an oven, paint station or specialized tools.

  1. Print the Pokémon template at the size you want. Use ordinary printer paper for a light ornament; heavier paper can make cutting easier but may require a stronger hanging point.
  2. Color the design before cutting if the template is not already colored.
  3. Cut around the square and remove the gray areas indicated by the template.
  4. Fold on the solid lines, then unfold carefully so the snowflake holds its intended shape.
  5. Attach tape or string and hang it. The official instruction is: “Use tape or string to hang up your beautiful decoration.”

Keep paper ornaments away from candles, fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. Store them flat between seasons so the folds and cut edges do not become crushed.

Make printable Pokémon cones for a group

Cones are efficient when a classroom, party or family group needs a character craft that does not require baking. DLTK lists Pikachu, Ash, Blastoise, Dragonair, Lugia, Mew, Mewtwo and Scyther templates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Print a color template, or choose a black-and-white version that participants can decorate themselves.
  2. Cut out the cone shape and any marked details.
  3. Roll the printed piece into a cone and glue the tab to the opposite edge. Hold the seam until it sets.
  4. Decorate with pipe cleaners or sparkle glue. Keep embellishments light so the cone remains balanced when hung.
  5. Add a loop of string at the top after the glue is dry, or display the cone as a tabletop or gift decoration if a hanging point is not practical.

For young children, pre-cut difficult curves, provide child-safe scissors and supervise both cutting and glue use. A black-and-white template turns the assembly into both a coloring activity and an ornament project.

Design ideas that read clearly from across the room

Use high-contrast signature features

  • Poké Ball: keep the red/white split, black center band and button clean and evenly aligned.
  • Pikachu: prioritize the yellow face, long ears, red cheeks and black ear tips. These features matter more than adding many tiny lines.
  • Glaceon: preserve the snowflake silhouette and the template’s cutouts rather than adding heavy decorations that hide the openings.
  • Other characters: choose one or two unmistakable colors and shapes instead of trying to reproduce every detail at miniature scale.

Build a themed tree or set

Pokémon Center’s 2023 holiday coverage showed Munchlax, Stantler, Spheal, Slurpuff, Mime Jr. and Pikachu ornaments, while its 13 October 2025 holiday-exclusives article featured Alolan Exeggutor and Pikachu resin-cast ornaments. Those releases can inspire a homemade series, but seasonal products and retailer inventory change, so treat them as design references rather than promises of current availability.

A 2018 Mega Construx Holiday Pikachu product also paired a Pikachu in a Santa hat with a Poké Ball ornament attachment. You can borrow the concept for a personal craft by adding a removable paper Santa hat to a cured Pikachu, rather than changing the basic clay form.

Personalize without obscuring the character

  • Add the maker’s name or year on the back of a clay ornament with a fine tool before curing.
  • Use one consistent ribbon color for a coordinated family set, or assign a different color to each character.
  • For a gift, match the recipient’s favorite Pokémon colors while keeping the face or emblem large enough to recognize.
  • For classroom work, let each child choose a template, then display the cones together as a character garland.

Safety, curing and finishing checks

  • Follow the polymer-clay manufacturer’s temperature and time instructions exactly. The Sculpey schedule of 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼ inch (6 mm) applies to the cited guidance; your package may specify a different schedule.
  • Use ventilation appropriate to the product label and keep uncured clay off furniture and fabric.
  • Use an oven-safe sheet or mat and let cured pieces cool before attaching ribbon.
  • Let painted plastic and glued paper pieces dry fully before stacking or hanging them.
  • Use child-safe scissors with supervision, and keep every paper design away from open flame and direct heat.
  • Check each loop, eye screw and glued seam before hanging. A loose attachment can let an ornament fall or become a choking hazard for small children or pets.

Troubleshooting common problems

The clay cracks or breaks

Cracking usually follows uneven thickness, insufficient conditioning or rough handling around a hole or eye screw. Recondition the clay, smooth joins before curing and keep the main body close to a consistent thickness. Do not force an eye screw into a fully cured piece unless the material and tool instructions specifically support drilling.

The two Poké Ball colors do not meet cleanly

Make the red and white sections separately, check their fit before adding the black band and smooth the seam with light pressure. On a fillable plastic ball, mark the equator before painting so the halves align when closed.

Paint smears or sticks to the cap

Paint one section at a time, allow it to dry completely and keep wet paint away from the closing edge. If the cap or loop must be handled, hold the ornament by an unpainted area until the surface is fully set.

The paper snowflake tears

Use fresh paper and sharp scissors, turn the sheet rather than twisting the cut line and remove gray areas gradually. Reinforce the hanging point with a small piece of tape on the back before threading string.

The cone will not hold its shape

Check that the tab is glued to the opposite edge, not to the same side of the seam. Hold the join until the adhesive grabs, then add only light decorations so the cone does not pull open.

Where each method works best

Family crafting at home

Choose polymer clay when an adult can manage the oven and everyone wants a keepsake. Choose the fillable ball when the group wants a 3D result with less sculpting. Paper is the easiest option for a short session with minimal cleanup.

Classroom or party stations

Printable cones keep the workflow simple: print, cut, glue and decorate. Prepare templates in advance, provide a limited set of embellishments and reserve a drying area so finished cones do not touch one another.

Gift tags and small packages

A thin clay Pikachu face or a paper Glaceon snowflake can double as a gift topper. Keep the hanging loop short and secure, and avoid heavy attachments that could tear wrapping paper.

Long-term storage

Store cured clay and plastic ornaments in separate layers so painted surfaces do not rub. Keep paper snowflakes and cones flat or lightly supported, away from moisture, sunlight and heat.

Use Pokémon designs responsibly

Pokémon names, logos and character designs are intellectual property of their respective rights holders. Treat these ornaments as personal, non-commercial fan crafts, and do not imply that a handmade item is endorsed by or affiliated with the rights holders. If you sell decorations, printables or kits, obtain the permissions required for the designs you use.

A simple decision guide

  1. Need maximum durability and sculptural detail? Make a polymer-clay Poké Ball or Pikachu.
  2. Need a recognizable 3D ornament quickly? Decorate a clear fillable plastic ball.
  3. Need the lowest-cost project with no oven? Print and fold the Glaceon snowflake.
  4. Need many child-friendly ornaments for a group? Use the printable cones.

Whichever method you choose, make the hanging point part of the design from the beginning, keep signature colors and shapes bold, and let every painted, glued or cured component finish before the ornament goes on the tree.
