How to Make Custom Stickers with a Cricut Printer and Cutting Machine

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

You make Cricut stickers with two devices: an inkjet printer produces the color artwork, and a compatible Cricut smart cutting machine scans that printed sheet and cuts the sticker shapes. Cricut calls this workflow Print Then Cut. The reliable method is to design, print, and cut in one Design Space project so the sensor marks remain correctly sized.

This guide covers compatible machines and materials, artwork preparation, exact print settings, cutting, calibration, and fixes for common scanning and alignment problems.

What you need

Gather these supplies before opening Design Space. The listed equipment follows Cricut’s printable sticker-paper workflow.

  • A Cricut smart cutting machine that supports Print Then Cut
  • Cricut Design Space on a computer or mobile device
  • A Fine-Point Blade and Housing
  • A LightGrip cutting mat
  • Printable sticker paper, printable vinyl, or another sheet specifically supported for your machine
  • An inkjet home printer
  • A Brayer (optional, for smoothing the sheet onto the mat)

Cricut’s Printable Sticker Paper instructions are for inkjet printers. Cricut warns that laser printing can damage the material or the printer, so do not substitute a laser printer unless the exact media instructions explicitly allow it.

Check whether your Cricut supports Print Then Cut

Print Then Cut is not available on every Cricut model. Cricut identifies Joy Xtra, Joy 2, Explore models, Maker models, and Venture as Print Then Cut-capable families. The original Cricut Joy is not capable of Print Then Cut. The current machine selector in Design Space is the final check because product lineups and software support can change.

Machine family Print Then Cut status What to do
Cricut Joy Not supported Use a compatible machine for printed stickers; Joy cannot scan Print Then Cut registration marks.
Cricut Joy Xtra Supported Select the correct machine in Design Space and follow its on-screen workflow.
Cricut Joy 2 Supported Use Cricut’s Joy 2 Print Then Cut instructions for model-specific details.
Cricut Explore models Supported Confirm your exact model in Design Space before preparing the sheet.
Cricut Maker models Supported Confirm your exact model and material setting in Design Space.
Cricut Venture Supported Use the machine-specific prompts and material guidance.

Do not interpret “Cricut printer” as a single appliance. The printer and cutting machine perform different jobs: the inkjet printer lays down the image, while the Cricut reads the printed marks and cuts the outline.

Choose sticker material that your printer and sensor can handle

Use media with a printable coating and a backing that feeds through your inkjet printer. Cricut Printable Sticker Paper has a blank printable side; its reverse has a grid and Cricut logo. Identify that side before loading the sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Material choice Official guidance Important trade-off
Cricut Printable Sticker Paper Cricut documents a dedicated Print Then Cut workflow and specifies inkjet printing. The most direct documented path, but you still must choose the matching material setting and a suitable printer feed.
Printable vinyl Use the separate Printable Vinyl Instructions. It is a printable alternative; print-side identification, loading, and cut settings are product-specific.
Printable Waterproof Sticker Set Follow Cricut’s product instructions. Do not generalize its layer or finishing directions to other waterproof media.
Non-Cricut glossy, reflective, dark, or holographic stock Cricut says finish and color can interfere with sensor reading, depending on the machine and material. Check the exact machine and sheet combination before committing to a full batch.

Older Explore Air 2 and earlier machines require non-reflective matte white or transparent materials for reliable mark reading, according to Cricut’s Print Then Cut guidance. Newer machines may support specified Cricut gold, silver, and holographic printable products, but non-Cricut dark, glossy, or holographic surfaces can still reduce sensor accuracy. A material that prints well is not automatically a material that scans well.

Prepare the artwork in Design Space

Create or upload the design

Open Design Space, choose the correct machine, and create a new canvas or upload an image. Keep the design within the Print Then Cut area shown by Design Space. Cricut maintains a current size-limit page at How large can I Print Then Cut?; exact limits vary by machine, mat, material, and current software, so use the dimensions Design Space displays rather than relying on an old chart.

Flatten a multi-layer sticker into one printable layer

If the sticker contains text, illustrations, and several colored layers, select the complete artwork and choose Flatten. Flattening turns the selection into one printable layer and tells Cricut to cut the outside shape. If you leave layers separate, Design Space may treat them as separate operations instead of one printed sticker.

Attach is not a replacement for Flatten when you want one outer cut around a layered sticker. Attach preserves the relationship between cut layers; Flatten creates the single printable layer needed for a Print Then Cut sticker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add a border with Offset

To make a white or colored outline, select the artwork and use Offset to create a surrounding layer. Adjust the offset until the border is the width you want, send it behind the artwork, then select the finished design and flatten it before printing. The outer offset becomes the cut contour.

Use Create Sticker when appropriate

Design Space’s Create Sticker tool can build a sticker appearance from selected objects. Select the objects, choose Create Sticker, set the appearance options, then choose Make and follow the print prompts. For a sheet containing repeated stickers, set the number under Project Copies on Mat Preview rather than duplicating objects manually.

Decide whether to use bleed

Bleed extends a small amount of color beyond the cut line so a tiny registration variation is less likely to leave a white sliver. The extra color can look fuzzy before cutting; it is trimmed away. Cricut advises turning bleed off for a borderless Create Sticker design. If you intentionally want color to run to the edge of a conventional sticker, leave the option on and inspect the preview before printing.

Print from Design Space without changing the scale

  1. Click Make after your artwork is flattened and sized.
  2. Review Mat Preview and the number of project copies. Make sure the design fits the displayed Print Then Cut area.
  3. Send the job to your inkjet printer through Design Space. Keep the complete workflow in the same session.
  4. Load one sheet at a time, printable side facing the direction indicated by your printer and the material package.
  5. In the printer dialog, use portrait orientation, one page per sheet, and the printer’s normal actual-size output. Do not use “fit to page,” “shrink to fit,” automatic centering, or edge-to-edge printing.
  6. Do not change scaling or margins to make the artwork larger. Cricut’s general guidance prefers the page’s top and left margins to be about 0.5 to 1.5 inches and warns against narrow margins.
  7. Let the ink dry according to the material’s instructions before placing the sheet on the mat. Wet ink can smear when handled or cut.

Printing the project as a PDF and then printing that file outside Design Space can make the sensor marks the wrong size. Cricut specifically warns that this can produce an inaccurate cut, even if the artwork itself appears correctly sized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Load the sheet and cut it

  1. Place the printed sheet on a clean LightGrip mat in the same orientation shown in Mat Preview. Align its top-left corner with the mat’s indicated starting position.
  2. Use a brayer, if needed, to smooth the sheet flat and remove bubbles or lifted corners.
  3. Install the Fine-Point Blade and Housing.
  4. In Design Space, select the material setting that matches the actual stock, not merely the name of a similar product.
  5. Load the mat when Design Space prompts you.
  6. Press the machine’s load/start control. The machine first scans the black registration marks and then cuts the selected outer contours.
  7. Wait for Design Space to tell you to unload the mat. Removing it early can shift an unfinished cut.

For a sticker sheet with several designs, the machine repeats the scan-and-cut process according to the positions shown on Mat Preview. Keep the sheet’s orientation unchanged from printing through loading.

Calibrate when the cut does not align

Machines are supplied pre-calibrated, but calibration can correct a cut that consistently lands too far left, right, above, or below the printed artwork. Design Space may also require calibration after software or Print Then Cut changes. Cricut notes that significant Print Then Cut changes beginning in June 2022 caused some users to recalibrate.

Use the on-screen calibration flow

  1. In Design Space, open the machine settings or the Print Then Cut calibration command shown for your device.
  2. Print the calibration sheet when prompted.
  3. Load that sheet exactly as instructed and let the machine perform the test cuts.
  4. Enter the requested line or position results on screen, then complete the final test cut.
  5. Repeat only if the test remains visibly misaligned.

Menu names and steps are not identical across every machine generation, operating system, or Design Space version. Cricut’s calibration page, edited September 3, 2026, provides current detailed instructions for Explore 5 and Maker 5 at Calibrating your machine for Print Then Cut. Follow the flow displayed for your own model rather than copying a different machine’s menu path.

Use the correct calibration sheet settings

For the calibration sheet, Cricut’s current guidance specifies portrait mode, black ink, white non-textured copy paper, one page per sheet, no scaling changes, and no edge printing or centering. Use the printer setup shown on screen. A calibration performed with a scaled, colored, textured, or glossy sheet can produce misleading results.

Troubleshoot scanning, alignment, and cut quality

The machine cannot find the registration marks

  • Confirm that the printed sheet came directly from Design Space and was not resized by another application.
  • Check that the marks are fully visible and the sheet is loaded in the same orientation as Mat Preview.
  • Move reflective light away from the sensor area and make sure the material is flat.
  • Replace dark, highly glossy, reflective, or patterned stock with a matte material approved for your machine.
  • For an Explore Air 2 or earlier, use non-reflective matte white or transparent material as Cricut specifies.
  • Verify that you selected the correct machine in Design Space and that its current material guidance allows the sheet.

The cut is consistently offset

  • Run Print Then Cut calibration and complete the test cuts instead of manually dragging the artwork.
  • Print at 100% scale. Disable fit-to-page, shrink-to-fit, borderless enlargement, and automatic centering.
  • Check that the printer did not add a scaling warning or substitute a different paper size.
  • Confirm that the material lies flat on the mat and that the mat is not slipping during loading.

The cut is accurate in one area but drifts across the sheet

  • Check for a curled sheet, bubbles, or a mat that has lost adhesion.
  • Use a fresh LightGrip mat and smooth the sheet with a Brayer.
  • Inspect the printer feed for skew. A sheet that enters the printer crooked can produce registration marks that are not parallel to the page.
  • Do not reuse a print exported to PDF; return to the original Design Space project and print again.

The blade cuts through the backing or does not cut the sticker cleanly

  • Confirm that the selected material setting matches the exact sticker stock.
  • Check that the Fine-Point Blade is seated correctly and free of adhesive or debris.
  • Use a manufacturer-specific setting for printable vinyl or a waterproof set rather than assuming sticker paper and vinyl have the same pressure.
  • Run a small test cut before using a full sheet.

The printed image looks fuzzy at the edge

Bleed intentionally adds color outside the cut line and can look fuzzy before cutting. If you are using Create Sticker without a border, turn bleed off. If the entire image is fuzzy, inspect the printer’s ink, paper setting, and print quality rather than changing Cricut’s cut settings.

Make the workflow repeatable for batches

  1. Save the Design Space project with the flattened artwork, material choice, and preferred copy count.
  2. Print one test sheet and inspect color, orientation, and registration marks before printing a batch.
  3. Keep the printer’s paper size and scaling settings unchanged between sheets.
  4. Load every sheet in the same orientation and use a consistent mat position.
  5. Record which material setting and calibration profile produced the correct result for that machine and printer combination.

Different sticker stocks can require different material settings, and a printer’s feed can vary with thickness. Treat each new media type as a separate setup rather than assuming a setting that worked for one sheet will work for another.

What this setup can and cannot promise

Print Then Cut is designed for home-printed graphics with a machine-readable border, not for unlimited full-page printing. The usable area depends on the current machine and Design Space limits. Cricut’s size guide is the authoritative place to check the maximum for your model; do not infer a universal dimension from another machine’s specification.

Sensor reliability also depends on surface finish, color, lighting, printer alignment, mat adhesion, and calibration. A compatible Cricut machine and an inkjet printer are necessary, but they do not make every third-party glossy or holographic sheet automatically compatible.

Quick preflight checklist

  • My machine appears as Print Then Cut-capable in current Design Space.
  • I am using an inkjet printer and media approved for that printer.
  • The artwork is flattened into one printable layer, with an offset added only if I want a border.
  • My bleed choice matches the look I want.
  • I am printing from Design Space at actual size, without fit-to-page or centering.
  • The sheet is loaded printable-side up or down as its package specifies, with the same orientation as Mat Preview.
  • The material setting matches the exact stock.
  • The registration marks are unobstructed and the sheet is matte enough for my machine to scan.
  • I have calibrated if Design Space requested it or previous cuts were misaligned.
