Tell ChatGPT that its job is to test your reasoning, not reassure you. Give it your claim and context, then require it to expose hidden assumptions, separate facts from inferences, present the strongest opposing case, identify disconfirming evidence, state uncertainty, and ask clarifying questions before reaching a conclusion.
Use a second prompt to audit its first answer for agreement bias, and independently verify consequential claims. This produces a more useful thinking partner, but it cannot guarantee that the criticism is correct.

The core prompt: ask for a structured challenge
A vague request such as “What do you think?” invites a conversational answer. A specific output contract makes critique part of the task. Paste the following prompt before your question, then add your claim and any evidence you already have:

Before agreeing with me, restate my claim and list the assumptions it depends on. Separate facts, inferences, and value judgments. Give the strongest case against my view, at least two plausible alternative explanations, and the evidence that would change your mind. Mark uncertainty explicitly and ask clarifying questions when needed. Do not optimize for reassurance; optimize for accuracy and useful disagreement. End with a revised assessment and what I should verify independently.
The wording matters because each sentence forces a different check. “Restate my claim” catches misunderstandings. “List the assumptions” makes implicit premises visible. Separating facts from inferences prevents a confident interpretation from being presented as an observation. Requiring the strongest opposing case reduces the chance of a token objection. Asking what would change its mind creates a testable standard instead of an unfalsifiable debate. The final verification list keeps the answer from becoming a substitute for evidence.

Add the context that determines the answer
ChatGPT can only challenge premises that you reveal or that it can reasonably infer. Include the decision you are making, the definitions you are using, constraints, time frame, geography, relevant numbers, and what outcome you value. If you omit those details, the model may challenge a weaker version of your position or fill gaps with assumptions of its own.
For example, replace “Should I quit my job?” with a claim such as: “I believe leaving my current job for a six-month break is financially safe. I have 14 months of living expenses saved, no dependents, and health insurance through the end of the year. My goal is to reduce burnout, not maximize income. What assumptions am I missing?” The second version gives the model something concrete to test.
A workflow that makes disagreement useful
Run the conversation in stages rather than asking for an immediate verdict. Each stage has a distinct purpose and a visible output.
- Declare the job. Start with:
Your job is to test my reasoning, not reassure me.State whether you want error detection, a decision review, a debate rehearsal, or a research plan. - Expose assumptions. Ask for hidden premises, missing context, ambiguous definitions, and conditions that would change the result. Tell ChatGPT to ask questions before concluding when a missing fact is material.
- Force alternatives. Request the strongest opposing argument, competing hypotheses, and concrete counterexamples. Ask it to distinguish a plausible alternative from a merely imaginable one.
- Separate evidence types. Require labels such as fact, inference, prediction, and value judgment. This shows whether disagreement rests on data, interpretation, or priorities.
- Calibrate confidence. Ask what is unknown, how sensitive the conclusion is to each assumption, and what evidence would update the assessment. A confidence statement is useful only when paired with reasons and uncertainty.
- Iterate. After the first answer, ask ChatGPT to find where it agreed too readily, identify unsupported claims, and produce a corrected version. OpenAI’s prompting guidance recommends refining complex work through focused follow-up prompts.
- Verify. For claims that affect money, health, safety, law, employment, or public statements, inspect cited sources, use search or deep research when available, and check the important facts independently.
A practical second-pass audit
Use this follow-up after ChatGPT responds:
Audit your previous answer for agreement bias. Identify every statement that accepted my framing without sufficient evidence. Check whether your opposing case was genuinely the strongest one, whether any alternative explanation was ignored, and whether you treated an inference as a fact. List corrections, lower your confidence where appropriate, and rewrite the assessment with the changes applied.
This is not a guarantee of objectivity: the same model is reviewing its own work. It is a useful error-catching pass because it turns a general request for “more critical thinking” into a checklist.
What to require in the answer
You can make the output easier to inspect by specifying a fixed format. A compact template works for everyday decisions:

- Claim: the proposition being evaluated, in one sentence.
- Assumptions: premises that must be true for the claim to hold.
- Established facts: information supported by the material provided or by verifiable sources.
- Inferences: conclusions drawn from those facts.
- Strongest case against: the best-supported objection, not a caricature.
- Alternative explanations: at least two plausible accounts of the same evidence.
- Disconfirming evidence: observations that would weaken or overturn the claim.
- Uncertainty: unknowns, confidence level, and sensitivity to assumptions.
- Questions: information needed before a responsible conclusion.
- Revised assessment: the current conclusion and the next fact to verify.
For a complicated project, ask for a table with one row per assumption and columns for supporting evidence, opposing evidence, confidence, and the cheapest useful test. The table makes it harder for a polished paragraph to hide an unsupported leap.
Prompting approaches compared
Different prompts create different levels of challenge. Choose the lightest structure that fits the decision, then add safeguards as the stakes rise.
| Approach | What you ask for | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open-ended opinion | “What do you think?” | Fast and conversational | May mirror your framing and offer little evidence separation |
| Devil’s advocate | “Argue against my position” | Surfaces objections quickly | Can produce a performative or exaggerated counterargument |
| Assumption audit | List premises, missing context, and definitions | Reveals where the reasoning can fail | Does not by itself compare competing explanations |
| Evidence audit | Label facts, inferences, predictions, and values | Clarifies what is actually known | Depends on the quality and completeness of the supplied evidence |
| Structured challenge | Assumptions, strongest opposing case, alternatives, disconfirming evidence, uncertainty, and questions | Most complete critique for a single exchange | Longer and still requires independent verification |
| Iterative self-audit | Critique the first answer, then rewrite it | Catches agreement and unsupported claims missed initially | Can repeat the same model’s blind spots |
The structured challenge plus a second-pass audit is the best default for decisions where a mistaken assumption is costly. For a low-stakes brainstorming session, a shorter assumption audit may be enough.
How to phrase claims so they can be tested
ChatGPT cannot meaningfully challenge a claim that has no scope or success condition. Turn broad statements into propositions with a subject, time frame, comparison, and observable outcome.
- Broad: “Remote work is more productive.”
Testable: “For our software team, fully remote work will increase completed, reviewed tickets per engineer over the next quarter without increasing escaped defects.” - Broad: “This marketing channel is failing.”
Testable: “The channel’s qualified-lead cost will remain above our target for the next eight weeks even after excluding the launch week.” - Broad: “I learn best by watching videos.”
Testable: “For this programming topic, videos produce higher scores on a delayed practical test than reading alone after the same study time.”
Then ask which definitions are debatable. “Productivity,” “qualified,” “best,” and “failing” may conceal the most important value judgments.

Separating facts, inferences, predictions, and values
Agreement often feels persuasive because several kinds of statements are blended together. Ask ChatGPT to label them explicitly:
- Fact: an observation or sourced statement that can be checked.
- Inference: an interpretation drawn from facts.
- Prediction: a claim about what will happen.
- Value judgment: a preference about what matters or what should be done.
Suppose you write, “Sales fell after the redesign, so the new interface caused the decline and should be reverted.” The fall may be a fact if the measurement is sound. Causation is an inference; the forecast that reverting will restore sales is a prediction; and “should be reverted” depends on costs, risk, and priorities. A critical response should examine each layer separately rather than simply endorse or reject the entire sentence.
Getting a genuinely strong opposing case
“Argue the other side” can yield a weak straw man. Improve it with constraints:
- Ask for the steelman: the most persuasive version an informed opponent would make.
- Specify that it must use the same facts and acknowledge its own weaknesses.
- Request the decision rule under which the opposing view would win.
- Ask for a counterexample that would be realistic in your context, not merely logically possible.
- Have ChatGPT rank objections by probability, impact, and ease of testing.
You can also split roles across turns: first request the strongest case for your position, then the strongest case against it, and finally an adjudication that compares evidence rather than counting rhetorical points. The final step should state which assumptions remain unresolved.
Uncertainty, confidence, and what would change the answer
Ask for calibrated uncertainty instead of an unsupported percentage. Useful questions include:

- Which conclusion is most sensitive to an uncertain assumption?
- What information would make you raise or lower confidence?
- What is the consequence of being wrong?
- What is the least expensive test that could distinguish the leading explanations?
A model’s confidence is not evidence. OpenAI’s Help Center summarizes the distinction as “Confidence isn’t reliability.” ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading text, fabricate quotations or citations, and sound certain while wrong. Treat confidence language as a map of the model’s stated uncertainty, not as a measurement of truth.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why ChatGPT may still agree with you
Agreement can result from several causes: your prompt may reward reassurance, your claim may be underspecified, the model may be following a safety or helpfulness constraint, or the available evidence may genuinely support your view. A disagreement request cannot override every system instruction or make missing facts appear.
Sycophancy is also a documented model-behavior failure mode. OpenAI said an update to GPT-4o became “overly flattering or agreeable” and reported rolling it back. OpenAI’s stated objective for ChatGPT is that it should help users explore multiple perspectives and “shouldn’t simply echo your view or validate everything you say.” Its Model Spec describes the related behavior as seeking truth together by understanding goals, clarifying assumptions and uncertain details, and giving critical feedback when appropriate.
Reported system-card measurements illustrate that behavior differs by model and evaluation. OpenAI’s 2025 GPT-5 system-card page lists an offline sycophancy score of 0.145 for GPT-4o, 0.052 for gpt-5-main, and 0.040 for gpt-5-thinking. The same page reports preliminary prevalence reductions of 69% for free users and 75% for paid users versus the recent GPT-4o model. These are model-evaluation figures, not a guarantee for every conversation, account, or prompt.
Verification: where the prompt ends and your judgment begins
Use the critique to decide what to check, not to outsource the check. For important claims:
Best Value
- Ask ChatGPT to list each factual assertion that materially affects the recommendation.
- Request the source, date, geography, population, and method for each assertion. If no reliable source is available, mark it as unverified.
- Open the cited material yourself and confirm that it actually supports the wording used.
- Look for a primary source or an independent source with a different perspective.
- Run a small test, pilot, calculation, or consultation when practical.
- Record which assumptions remain unresolved and set a condition for revisiting the decision.
For health, legal, financial, employment, safety, or reputational decisions, consult an appropriately qualified professional. A better prompt improves the conversation structure; it does not turn generated text into professional advice or primary evidence.
Troubleshooting common failures
It agrees, then adds a token caveat
Ask it to quote your original claim, list every premise, and identify the single strongest reason the claim could be false. Require a revised conclusion that changes if that reason is substantial.
The counterargument is exaggerated
Tell it to use only realistic alternatives supported by the stated context, rank them by plausibility, and explain what evidence would distinguish them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It asks no clarifying questions
Add a gate: Do not give a final recommendation until you have listed the missing facts that could change the decision and asked me about them. If you cannot answer, request conditional conclusions for each plausible case.
It presents invented citations or quotations
Ask for source titles and dates, then verify them independently. If a citation cannot be checked, remove the claim or label it unverified. Never treat a citation-looking sentence as proof that a source exists.
The answer is too long to use
Keep the same reasoning requirements but constrain the format: “Return a table with no more than eight rows, followed by the three highest-value checks.” Brevity should reduce presentation, not remove the assumption and evidence audits.
A reusable short version
When you need a fast check, use this compact prompt:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Challenge this claim before agreeing: [claim]. List the three most important assumptions, separate facts from inferences, give the strongest realistic counterargument, name two alternative explanations, state what evidence would change the conclusion, and ask any clarifying question that could materially affect your assessment. End with a revised conclusion and the first thing I should verify.
For high-stakes choices, use the full prompt, run the self-audit, and verify the resulting claims. The goal is not automatic opposition; it is a transparent path from assumptions and evidence to a conclusion that can be corrected.
