How to Make Bluetooth Headphones Sound Better on Your Phone

Start with fit, then adjust EQ, verify the Bluetooth connection, and only afterward experiment with codecs or spatial audio. A poor in-ear seal can remove bass, an aggressive quality mode can cause dropouts, and a codec cannot add support that either your phone or headphones lack.

Use the sequence below: make the physical connection sound right, apply small reversible software changes, test stability in your normal listening location, and clean or re-pair the earbuds when one side behaves differently.

1. Fix the physical fit before changing settings

Fit is the fastest way to improve Bluetooth headphone sound, but the solution depends on the headphone style. Eartip advice applies to sealed in-ear models, not over-ear headphones or open-fit earbuds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Get a proper seal with in-ear headphones

A loose seal makes music sound thin, quiet and short on bass because outside air leaks around the nozzle. JBL’s fit guidance describes the same symptom: without a tight seal, in-ear headphones can lose bass and block less unwanted sound. Try every supplied eartip size and test each ear separately; your left and right ears may need different sizes.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  1. Clean and dry your ears and the earbuds’ outer surfaces.
  2. Attach one supplied tip size and insert the earbud while gently rotating it until it sits securely.
  3. Play a familiar track with steady bass at a comfortable volume.
  4. Compare the other supplied sizes, listening for fuller bass, clearer vocals and a seal that remains comfortable after several minutes.
  5. If the earbud still moves, try the model’s supplied stability band or wing, if one is included.

Bose likewise recommends trying another eartip or stability-band size when fit, comfort, noise cancellation or sound quality is wrong. Do not force an oversized tip that causes pain, and do not assume the same size belongs in both ears. If the supplied tips cannot seal comfortably, look only for replacement tips explicitly compatible with your exact earbud model; nozzle dimensions and charging-case clearance are model-specific.

Do not apply eartip advice to open or over-ear designs

Open-fit earbuds are designed to let some outside sound in, so changing tips may not be possible. Over-ear headphones depend on the ear-cup position, headband adjustment and intact cushions instead. Center each cup over your ear, remove glasses or hair that break the cushion seal when practical, and check for flattened or damaged pads. Replace cushions only with parts made for that model.

Inspect a quiet earbud for blockage

If one side is quieter, look at the speaker grille for wax, lint or dirt. A partial blockage can reduce treble and overall level even when the Bluetooth link is fine. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for the exact model: mesh, water resistance and removable filters differ, and a generic liquid, pin or brush can push debris farther inside or damage the driver. Never use a sharp tool unless the maker specifically documents it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Use EQ and personalization sparingly

Equalization changes the balance between bass, midrange and treble; it cannot repair a bad seal, a blocked grille or a damaged driver. Make one change at a time, keep it reversible, and compare with familiar recordings rather than relying on a single song.

iPhone: Music EQ and Sound Check

For Apple Music playback, open Settings > Apps > Music. EQ selects Apple’s built-in tonal presets. Choose a preset, return to the same track and compare it with EQ off. A bass-oriented preset can add warmth but may make vocals less distinct or cause small drivers to distort at high levels.

Sound Check in the same Music settings normalizes perceived loudness between tracks. It does not increase the headphones’ maximum output and can make a quiet recording seem less dramatic. Turn it on when inconsistent track volume is the problem; leave it off if you prefer the original mastering levels.

These Music controls are documented for Apple Music and may not affect every third-party audio app. If another app has its own equalizer, use that app’s control instead of stacking multiple EQs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iPhone: Headphone Accommodations

Supported headphones can use Apple’s hearing-oriented adjustments at Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations. The feature can apply to media, phone calls, or both, and offers a custom audiogram-style setup or manual tone and amplification adjustments, depending on the connected model.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Use the preview and comparison controls to make a small change, then listen for speech clarity and fatigue over several minutes. This is supported-device guidance, not a universal iPhone equalizer; if the option is unavailable, the connected headphones or iOS configuration may not support it.

Android: use the phone and headphone app that actually controls your model

Android manufacturers place EQ and sound effects in different menus, and many headphone makers expose the most useful controls only in their companion app. Check the headphone app first, then search the phone’s Settings for equalizer, sound effects, audio or accessibility.

Start with a flat profile. Raise or lower one frequency band by a small amount, listen to a familiar track, and compare with the change bypassed. Large boosts consume headroom and can create clipping; if you need much more volume after boosting bass, reduce the boost rather than turning the phone to its limit. Save a profile for music and a separate one for speech or podcasts if your app supports profiles.

3. Check Bluetooth codec and connection stability on Android

A codec is the method used to encode audio for the Bluetooth link. Android negotiates among codecs supported by both the phone and the receiving headphones. The platform documentation describes this as selecting the best mutually supported codec; it does not mean every Android phone offers every codec, and manufacturers may require licenses or change codec priority.

What the common codec names mean

Codec What is established Practical limitation
SBC Baseline codec available in the Bluetooth audio ecosystem. Usually the broadest compatibility; a different codec is not automatically audible as better.
AAC Listed by Android platform documentation alongside other optional codecs. Actual availability and implementation depend on the phone, operating-system build and headphones.
aptX Listed as an Android-supported codec family option. Both endpoints and the relevant licensing must support it.
aptX HD Higher-quality aptX variant listed in Android platform documentation. It cannot be selected when either endpoint lacks support.
LDAC Listed by Android platform documentation as an optional codec. High-quality modes can require more radio bandwidth and may be less stable in interference.

The table describes platform-level support, not a promise for your particular phone, region, firmware or headphone. A developer-options menu may display codec choices, but the displayed preference is not proof that the active connection negotiated that codec.

Test the highest mutually supported quality mode

  1. Connect the headphones to the phone and pause other Bluetooth audio connections.
  2. Open the headphone maker’s app or the phone’s Bluetooth-device details and look for a wireless playback quality, HD audio or codec setting.
  3. Select the highest quality option that both devices offer.
  4. Play familiar audio for several minutes in a quiet room, then repeat in the place where you normally listen.
  5. If you hear stutters, pauses or delayed starts, return to the stable-connection or compatibility option.

Sony’s support guidance warns that a quality-priority setting can make the connection unstable depending on the environment. Huawei similarly notes that higher-quality or lossless modes can affect battery life and may stutter in high-interference locations such as stations and airports. A stable stream is better than a nominally higher-quality mode that keeps interrupting playback.

Do not force an unsupported codec

Codec menus cannot add hardware support. If the phone and headphones do not share a codec, Android must use another mutually supported option. Firmware updates can also change the available choices, so recheck after updating either device. When troubleshooting, return codec settings to automatic selection before changing several other variables at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Treat spatial audio as an optional effect

Spatial audio changes the presentation of compatible content; it is not a repair for weak bass, a poor seal, a blocked grille or Bluetooth dropouts. Google’s Pixel guidance limits supported headphone use to specified device and content combinations, including movies and television with 5.1-or-higher audio tracks.

  • Black PopSockets: Simple, refined, and endlessly versatile. A timeless essential for any phone.
  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

On a compatible Pixel phone and headphones, open Settings and search for Spatial Audio to locate the device’s control, then enable it only for a supported app or track. Compare the same scene with the effect off. Some listeners prefer the wider, more speaker-like presentation; others hear an artificial or less focused center image. Music apps, phone models and headphone firmware can expose different options, so the toggle may not appear on an unsupported setup.

5. Re-pair when the sound problem is really a connection problem

Before changing EQ or codec settings, confirm that the headphones are connected to the intended phone. A phone can reconnect to a tablet, laptop or another nearby device and leave the expected app playing through a different output.

  1. Pause audio on nearby devices that have previously paired with the headphones.
  2. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and confirm the headphones show as connected for media audio.
  3. Close and reopen the playback app, then test a downloaded track or another known-good source.
  4. Turn Bluetooth off and on, reconnect, and test again.
  5. If the imbalance or silence remains, choose the headphones in Bluetooth settings and use the phone’s Forget or Remove command, then pair them again according to the model’s instructions.

There is no universal button sequence for a factory reset. If re-pairing does not fix the problem, use the manufacturer’s support page for the exact reset, firmware and channel-balance procedure. A reset can erase multipoint pairings and saved settings, so record any custom EQ profile first.

6. Diagnose the symptom instead of changing everything

Symptom Most useful next check
Both earbuds sound thin or bass-light Refit the eartips and test another size in each ear.
One earbud is much quieter Inspect its grille for blockage, verify left-right balance, then re-pair.
Audio is clear but keeps cutting out Move away from dense wireless traffic and switch from quality priority to a stable connection mode.
Every app sounds different Check whether EQ is applied only in Apple Music or in one Android companion app.
Movies sound wider but music sounds odd Disable spatial audio for music and reserve it for compatible surround content.
Sound became worse after an update Recheck codec, EQ, balance and headphone-app settings; compatibility can change with firmware or OS updates.

7. Keep volume and hearing comfort in the loop

Do not compensate for a poor seal or a blocked grille by continually raising volume. Refit or clean the headphones first, and take listening breaks at a comfortable level. If speech remains unclear or one ear consistently hears less even after cleaning, balance checks and re-pairing, stop increasing volume and consider professional hearing advice.

8. A reliable order for future adjustments

  1. Identify whether the headphones are in-ear, open-fit or over-ear.
  2. Correct fit, cup position and visible blockage.
  3. Confirm the intended phone connection and test a familiar recording.
  4. Apply one modest EQ or personalization change.
  5. On Android, test the highest mutually supported codec in a low-interference area.
  6. Switch to a stable connection mode if playback stutters or battery drain becomes unacceptable.
  7. Try spatial audio only with compatible content and compare it with the effect disabled.
  8. Forget and re-pair the headphones if a channel remains quiet or the connection behaves incorrectly.

This order isolates the cause. It also prevents a codec change, a large EQ boost and a spatial effect from masking the original fit or connection problem.

9. Match the fix to the symptom

Each control addresses a different part of the listening chain. Fit changes the acoustic seal between the ear and the driver. Cleaning removes a physical obstruction. EQ changes tonal balance after the signal reaches the headphones. Codec selection changes how the phone sends that signal. Spatial audio changes the presentation of supported content. Treating these as interchangeable leads to wasted time: a codec will not restore bass lost through a leaking eartip, and spatial audio will not correct a blocked grille.

Use a simple A/B test for every adjustment. Keep the same phone, headphones, track and volume, change one setting, then switch it back. If you cannot reliably hear a benefit on several familiar recordings, leave the setting at its default. A change that sounds impressive for one song but makes speech harsh or bass muddy elsewhere is not a general improvement.

Adjustment Best use What it cannot solve
Eartip, wing or ear-cup position Thin bass, low perceived level or poor isolation caused by fit. A damaged driver or unsupported software feature.
Cleaning One side that became quieter or duller. A channel-balance setting or hearing difference.
EQ or personalization A preferred tonal balance or clearer speech on supported devices. Dropouts, pairing errors or a missing seal.
Codec or wireless mode Testing sound quality against connection reliability on Android. Adding a codec that one endpoint does not support.
Spatial audio Compatible movies and other supported surround content. General music quality, fit and Bluetooth stability.

10. Keep app and device scope straight

A setting can be working correctly while appearing ineffective because it applies only to a particular app or headphone. Apple’s Music EQ and Sound Check are documented for Apple Music, so test them there before concluding that the iPhone’s Bluetooth output has changed everywhere. A podcast, video or streaming app may have its own volume or EQ behavior.

Headphone Accommodations are different: they are accessibility controls for supported headphones and can be assigned to media, calls or both. If music changes but calls do not, check which application is covered. On Android, a companion app may store EQ and wireless-quality preferences in the headphones, while the phone’s sound-effects menu may affect only phone playback. Read the model’s own description of each control and avoid stacking several effects without testing.

After an operating-system or headphone-firmware update, revisit these scopes. Codec availability, priority, EQ profiles and supported spatial-audio combinations can change. Note your preferred settings before updating so you can compare the new behavior rather than relying on memory.

11. Test stability where you actually listen

A quality-priority mode that works in a quiet room may fail in a crowded station, airport or other high-interference location. Test for a few minutes in both conditions. Listen for stutters, pauses, delayed starts and repeated reconnects, not just tonal quality during a silent section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the stream breaks up, choose the manufacturer’s stable-connection or compatibility option and retest. Huawei notes that higher-quality modes can also affect battery life. The practical comparison is therefore not “highest number wins,” but whether the mode remains continuous for your normal session without an unacceptable battery tradeoff. Keep other previously paired devices from competing for the headphones while you test.

12. Know when further tweaking is unlikely to help

If both sides remain thin after trying the supplied tips, or one side remains quiet after careful cleaning, balance checks and re-pairing, stop adding volume and EQ. Use the manufacturer’s exact troubleshooting page for firmware checks, reset instructions and model-specific channel procedures. Different products use different grilles, filters, controls and reset sequences, so a generic tutorial can cause damage or erase settings without fixing the fault.

Persistent speech imbalance can also be a hearing issue rather than a Bluetooth issue. Test with another known-good pair if available, keep the level comfortable and seek professional hearing advice when the difference remains. Replacement eartips or stability bands are reasonable only when they are explicitly compatible with the exact model and the original parts cannot provide a comfortable seal.

13. A quick decision tree

  1. Is the sound thin on both sides? If the headphones are in-ear, try a different tip size and reseat them. For over-ear models, center the cups and inspect the cushions.
  2. Is only one side quiet? Check the grille, left-right balance and intended Bluetooth output, then re-pair.
  3. Does every app have the same problem? Test a familiar downloaded track and inspect the physical fit before changing app-specific EQ.
  4. Does audio cut out? Test in a low-interference area, then switch from quality priority to a stable mode if needed.
  5. Are you trying to make movies more immersive? Enable spatial audio only when the phone, headphones, app and track meet the supported requirements.
  6. Did an update change the result? Recheck EQ, balance, codec and headphone-app settings, then follow the maker’s current instructions.

This decision tree keeps each test limited and reversible. It also protects hearing comfort: solve fit, blockage and connection problems before reaching for more volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my Bluetooth headphones sound thin on my phone?

For in-ear headphones, a poor seal is the first thing to check. Try the supplied eartip sizes, including a different size in each ear, and rotate each earbud until it seals comfortably. If the sound is still thin, inspect the grilles for blockage before changing EQ.

Can I force a better Bluetooth codec on Android?

No. Android negotiates a codec supported by both the phone and the headphones. A developer-options preference cannot add hardware or licensing support, and the displayed choice is not proof that the active connection uses it.

Should I choose sound-quality priority or connection stability?

Test the highest mutually supported quality mode in a quiet room and then where you normally listen. If playback stutters, pauses or reconnects, choose the stable-connection option. Higher-quality modes can also use more battery.

Why is one earbud quieter than the other?

Check the quiet earbud’s grille for wax, lint or dirt, following the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for that model. Then verify left-right balance, confirm the intended phone connection and re-pair. Do not use a generic liquid or sharp tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does iPhone EQ work in every app?

Apple documents Music EQ and Sound Check for Apple Music. A third-party app may not respond to those controls and may have its own equalizer or volume settings.

What is Headphone Accommodations on iPhone?

It is an accessibility feature for supported headphones at Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations. Depending on the connected model, it can apply custom or manual tone and amplification adjustments to media, calls or both.

Will spatial audio make all Bluetooth music sound better?

No. It is an optional presentation effect with device, app and content requirements. Google’s Pixel guidance includes movies and television with 5.1-or-higher tracks. Compare it with the effect off and keep it disabled when it makes music less focused.

When should I replace my ear tips?

Replace them only with tips explicitly compatible with your exact earbud model, and only when the supplied sizes cannot provide a comfortable seal. Nozzle fit and charging-case clearance vary by model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with the physical fit and cleanliness, then make one modest EQ or personalization change. On Android, test only codecs supported by both devices and favor stability when quality modes stutter or reduce battery life. Use spatial audio for compatible content rather than as a general repair, and re-pair or consult the manufacturer when one channel remains quiet.
