To get more listening time now, disable power-hungry features you do not need, reduce unnecessary radio use, and improve weak Bluetooth connections during calls. To slow battery aging, avoid routinely draining the battery to zero, keep charging within the temperature range in your model’s manual, store headphones correctly, and keep charging contacts dry and clean. These steps can reduce avoidable strain, but no manufacturer guidance establishes a guaranteed number of extra months or charge cycles.
First separate runtime from battery health
“Longer battery life” can mean two different things. Runtime is how many hours you get from the current charge. It changes with features, connection conditions, radio use, and whether you are listening to music or making calls. Battery health is the rechargeable cell’s ability to hold capacity after months or years of use. It is affected by temperature, storage, charging habits, moisture, and normal chemical aging.

A setting that adds an hour today does not repair an aged battery. Conversely, careful storage may help preserve capacity over time but cannot make a nearly empty charge last longer on the current trip. Use the sections below for the problem you actually have.
Extend the current charge
Turn off processing you are not using
Equalizers, digital sound enhancements, voice assistants, sound-quality-priority modes, and similar processing require additional work from the headset. The exact options differ by model, so open the manufacturer’s companion app and inspect its sound, assistant, and connection settings. If you do not need a feature, switch it off and compare the next listening session with the same volume and content.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sony’s support guidance gives examples including equalization, DSEE or comparable enhancement, and voice-assistant functions. On supported Sony devices, using several listed enhancements together can reduce operating time further. That is a model-specific warning, not a universal percentage reduction for every Bluetooth headset.
- Use a normal or balanced sound-quality mode when maximum runtime matters more than the highest processing quality.
- Disable an always-listening voice assistant if you rarely activate it from the headphones.
- Turn off enhancement modes individually so you can identify which option matters on your model.
- Check the manual after a firmware update; manufacturers can rename or relocate power-related settings.
Expect calls to use more power than music
Two-way calls can consume more energy than music playback because the headset must continuously transmit your microphone audio as well as receive the other person’s voice. Sony notes that call runtime may be much shorter when the Bluetooth connection is weak. If a call is draining the battery unusually quickly, move closer to the phone or computer, remove obstacles where practical, and avoid leaving the headset at the edge of its reliable range.
For a long meeting, use the device with the stronger connection or switch to a wired setup if your equipment supports one. The exact difference between music and call runtime depends on the headset, codec, microphone processing, and connection quality; do not apply a single advertised music-playback figure to calls.

Disable an unused Bluetooth radio when your model allows it
Some gaming headsets can maintain more than one wireless connection. Sony’s INZONE H9 II guidance warns that enabling Bluetooth while gaming can reduce operating time when no Bluetooth device is being used. If your headset offers a separate Bluetooth-mode switch and you are not connected to a Bluetooth phone or tablet, turn that radio off for the session. Do not disable a radio that your current audio connection requires.
Understand what the advertised runtime means
A box may quote a long music-playback figure, but that number is a test result under particular conditions. Volume, codec, active noise cancellation, ambient modes, microphones, equalization, and the age of the cell can all change the result. Treat the specification as a comparison baseline rather than a promise for every activity.
When comparing models, ask four questions: Is the figure for music or calls? Are noise cancellation or transparency modes enabled? Is it for a single earbud or the combined case-and-earbud system? Does the maker state a volume level or codec? These details matter more than a small difference between headline numbers. A true-wireless model may advertise earbud runtime separately from the number of recharges supplied by its case, while an over-ear headset usually reports one continuous figure.
Charge lithium-ion batteries without unnecessary stress
Do not make complete discharge a routine
JBL explains that lithium-ion batteries do not have the old “memory effect” associated with some older rechargeable chemistries and advises avoiding complete discharge. Its general support advice suggests keeping the charge roughly between 20% and 80% whenever convenient. That is a practical preference, not a requirement that applies identically to every headphone and not a guarantee of a particular service-life extension.

You can charge before the indicator reaches zero. If the battery does run flat occasionally, recharge it normally rather than repeatedly forcing the headset to shut down. The important habit is avoiding deliberate, frequent deep discharges when a top-up is easy.
Do not postpone a needed charge merely to hit an exact percentage. The 20%–80% idea is a convenience target, not a reason to interrupt travel, work, or an emergency call. Follow the product’s own low-battery warnings and charging instructions first.
Use the model’s temperature guidance
Heat is especially undesirable during charging and storage. Sony states for the WH-CH520 Help Guide and INZONE H9 II support guidance: “It is recommended to charge in a place with an ambient temperature between 15 °C and 35 °C (59 °F – 95 °F).” Those figures are manufacturer recommendations for the cited models, not a universal operating range for every headphone.
Follow the temperature range printed in your own manual when it differs. Avoid charging in direct sun, beside a heater, or inside a hot vehicle. Jabra warns that both hot and cold locations can reduce capacity and battery lifetime. A parked car can become far hotter or colder than the surrounding weather, so do not leave a headset or earbud case there between uses.
Recommended Free Tools
If the device feels unusually hot while charging, unplug it and let it return to room temperature before trying again. Do not cover a charging case with clothing or place it under bedding where heat can accumulate. Temperature guidance is about the surrounding environment, not a suggestion to cool a device with ice, a freezer, or a refrigerator.
Keep charging hardware dry and clean
Moisture on a USB port, charging cable, earbud contact, or case can interrupt charging and create unreliable behavior. Sony advises letting a wet device dry at room temperature before charging, then inspecting the cable and port. Wipe away dust or skin oils with a suitable dry, lint-free material according to the manual. Never force a connector into a blocked port and never charge while visible moisture remains.
For true-wireless earbuds, clean the charging contacts on both the earbuds and the case as directed by the maker. Poor contact can leave one bud partially charged, which looks like unusually fast battery drain even though the cell itself may be healthy.

Store headphones correctly when you will not use them
Recharge periodically during long storage
A battery can continue to lose charge while switched off. Sony’s instructions for the cited models recommend charging the headphones once every six months during extended storage to help prevent over-discharge. Treat six months as model guidance, not a universal rule. Your manual may specify a different interval or storage charge.

Check the charge on the interval your manual specifies rather than leaving the unit untouched until the battery is completely empty.
Keep the manual or support page with your storage notes, especially if you own several models with different instructions. A calendar reminder is useful, but it should point you back to the model’s stated interval rather than substitute a universal schedule.
Put true-wireless earbuds in their case and close the lid
Sony advises returning earbuds to their charging case and closing its lid. Earbuds left loose can be triggered as though they are being worn, and an open case lid can increase drain. The case also protects the buds from accidental touch input and keeps the charging contacts aligned.
After placing each earbud in the case, verify that its charging indicator responds, then close the lid. If one bud remains connected, check the contact surfaces and reseat it instead of assuming the battery has suddenly failed.

What differs between over-ear headphones and true-wireless earbuds?
| Use case | Most relevant runtime action | Most relevant storage action |
|---|---|---|
| Over-ear or on-ear Bluetooth headphones | Disable unused sound processing and, on models that offer it, an unused secondary Bluetooth radio | Follow the model’s periodic charging interval and temperature guidance |
| True-wireless earbuds | Reduce unnecessary calls and power features; investigate weak connections if runtime falls sharply | Return both earbuds to the case, confirm charging, and close the lid |
| Gaming headsets with multiple wireless modes | Turn off Bluetooth mode when no Bluetooth device is connected, if the model permits it | Use the supplied storage and charging instructions rather than leaving the headset connected indefinitely |
The table describes priorities, not universal battery-hour results. A headset’s advertised runtime is measured under its own conditions and may not match calls, enhanced audio, or simultaneous wireless links.
Diagnose a battery that suddenly drains fast
- Identify the activity. Note whether the short session involved music, gaming, a voice call, or an always-on assistant. Calls and weak connections can explain a large change without a defective cell.
- Review the app settings. Record which equalizer, enhancement, voice-assistant, sound-quality, or ambient processing options are enabled. Turn off one unused option at a time and test again.
- Check wireless links. Disconnect devices you are not using. If the model has a separate Bluetooth mode, disable it only when your current setup does not need it.
- Confirm a full charge. Inspect the cable, port, earbud contacts, and case. A dirty or damp contact can stop charging before the indicator reaches the expected state.
- Check temperature. Move charging to the ambient range specified in the manual. Do not test immediately after leaving the device in a hot or cold vehicle.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. Use the same type of playback and connection for a second test. One unusually short session is not enough to establish battery failure.
- Escalate when capacity remains greatly reduced. Sony says a significant drop in usage hours may indicate that the battery should be replaced. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair channel; repairability and battery service differ by model.
Record the date, playback type, approximate volume, active features, and time from full charge to shutdown. This simple log helps support staff distinguish a charging-contact problem from a genuinely reduced cell capacity. It also prevents you from comparing a music session with a long call and treating the difference as proof of failure.

Recognize normal aging and avoid false promises
Rechargeable batteries gradually wear down. JBL states that battery capacity declines over time, even when the product is used correctly. No official guidance reviewed for this topic quantifies a fixed number of extra months, cycles, or percentage points produced by any single habit. Temperature control, avoiding routine full discharge, and correct storage are risk-reduction practices, not guaranteed lifespan extensions.
A falling capacity is more credible when it appears across comparable music sessions after you have ruled out calls, extra processing, weak connections, and incomplete charging. If the headset is still under warranty, document the symptoms and charging conditions before contacting support. Built-in batteries may require professional service; do not open a sealed earbud or headset merely to install a generic cell.
Stop using and seek manufacturer guidance if the battery or case swells, develops a strong chemical odor, leaks, or becomes abnormally hot. Do not puncture, crush, or place a damaged lithium-ion product in ordinary trash. Disposal and repair options vary by location, so use the maker’s instructions or local battery-recycling service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the right cable, but do not expect it to improve battery health
A replacement cable is useful only when the original is missing, damaged, or incompatible with the charging port. Sony’s WH-CH730N/WH-CH735N guide specifies a USB Type-C charging cable. A compatible cable enables normal charging; it does not increase the battery’s capacity or extend its chemical life. Match the connector and the model’s charging requirements, and replace a cable that has exposed conductors, intermittent connections, or damaged plugs.
There is no generally suitable power bank, protective case, or generic battery-repair kit that automatically improves longevity for every headphone. Buy an accessory only when the specific model requires it, and verify the maker’s compatibility information first.
A practical routine
After each listening session
- Switch the headset off if it does not shut down automatically.
- Return true-wireless earbuds to the case and close the lid.
- Disconnect unused Bluetooth devices or modes.
- Keep the equipment away from direct heat and moisture.
When charging
- Charge in the ambient range stated by the model’s manual; Sony’s cited WH-CH520 and INZONE H9 II guidance uses 15 °C to 35 °C (59 °F to 95 °F).
- Inspect ports, contacts, and cable condition before connecting.
- Top up before zero when convenient; JBL’s general lithium-ion suggestion is approximately 20% to 80% when practical.
- Let moisture dry at room temperature before charging.
Before long-term storage
- Power the device down completely and store it in a cool, dry location.
- Write down the charging interval from the manual. Sony’s cited guidance uses once every six months.
- For earbuds, verify both buds are seated and charging before closing the case.
Bottom line
For longer sessions, start with the settings and connection: disable unused enhancements, assistants, and radios, and avoid weak Bluetooth links during calls. For a longer-lived battery, prevent routine deep discharge, respect the model’s temperature limits, keep charging hardware dry and clean, and follow its storage interval. When capacity remains substantially below normal after those checks, seek model-specific service rather than expecting a cable, accessory, or charging trick to restore an aged cell.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does keeping Bluetooth headphones between 20% and 80% guarantee a longer life?
No. JBL presents 20% to 80% as a convenient general preference for lithium-ion batteries. It is not a headphone-specific guarantee or a required target. Avoiding routine complete discharge is the more important practical point.

Why does my headset die faster during calls than while playing music?
Calls require the headset to transmit microphone audio as well as receive sound. A weak Bluetooth connection can shorten call runtime further. Move closer to the phone or computer, reduce obstacles, or use a wired setup when practical.
Can I charge Bluetooth headphones overnight?
Follow the model’s manual and charging instructions. Regardless of schedule, avoid charging in high heat, do not connect visibly wet hardware, and use an undamaged compatible cable. No universal overnight rule applies to every model.
How often should headphones be charged during storage?
Use the maker’s stated interval. Sony’s cited guidance recommends charging certain models once every six months to avoid over-discharge, but that interval is not universal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy is one wireless earbud draining faster than the other?
First check that both earbuds make clean contact in the case and that the case lid is closed. Uneven charging, a loose contact, calls, or connection behavior can mimic a failing cell. If the imbalance persists under comparable use, contact the manufacturer.
Will buying a new USB-C cable improve battery capacity?
No. A compatible replacement cable only restores reliable charging when the original is missing or damaged. It does not increase capacity or reverse normal battery aging.
The Bottom Line
Disable unused processing and radios for immediate runtime gains, then protect the battery with sensible charging, temperature control, dry contacts, and correct storage. Use your model’s manual for limits and service intervals, because no single habit guarantees a specific number of extra months or cycles.
