On a Galaxy Z Fold, open Settings > Display > Full screen apps, select the affected app, and choose Full screen. Reopen the app on the unfolded inner display. If that option is missing or produces stretched graphics and cut-off controls, use the compatibility tools in Settings > Advanced features > Labs, or return to App default and wait for an app update that supports foldable layouts.
Start with the per-app Full screen setting
The most direct fix is applied to each app rather than globally. First unfold the phone and reproduce the black bars or cropped content on the large inner panel. Keeping the phone unfolded while changing the setting makes it easier to judge the result on the display that is causing the problem.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Open Full screen apps. On some software versions this page includes an Aspect ratio tab; use that tab when it appears.
- Select the app that is leaving unused space or cutting off its interface.
- Choose Full screen.
- Force-close the app, launch it again, and check the same screen or activity that previously showed the problem.
The setting is app-specific. Repeat the process for other affected apps instead of expecting one selection to change every application. Samsung also notes that the controls can differ between the open inner display and the closed cover display, so verify the result on both screens if you regularly switch between them.
Recommended Free Tools
Full screen gives the application the widest available area on the inner panel. That is useful when the complaint is empty space around a video, game, or document, but it is not a guarantee that the application can redraw its controls correctly. If text, buttons, or navigation elements become clipped, select the same app again and compare App default before deciding which result is usable.

Choose between Full screen and App default deliberately
The two settings solve different problems. Full screen asks the system to use the Fold’s broad inner window. App default lets the application retain the layout and ratio it was designed to use. An app that was built only for a conventional phone display may look letterboxed in its default mode, yet become visibly stretched or lose controls when expanded.
| Setting | What it prioritizes | When to try it | Possible result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full screen | Maximum use of the inner panel | Black bars or unused space are the main issue | The app may enlarge successfully, or its own layout may stretch and clip controls |
| App default | The app’s designed layout | Full screen distorts graphics or hides interface elements | Letterboxing or unused space can remain |
| 16:9 | A predictable legacy aspect ratio | The app behaves better in a conventional widescreen window | More consistent framing than an unrestricted expansion, with less of the inner panel used |
| 4:3 | A predictable, less-wide aspect ratio | The app’s content is designed around a squarer legacy frame | A compromise between the app’s expected shape and the Fold’s inner display |
Do not judge only the first screen that opens. Move through menus, rotate the phone if the app supports rotation, open a text-entry page, and check any controls at the edges. A setting that removes bars on a title screen can still cut off a toolbar or make an important button unreachable.
If Full screen apps is missing, use Labs
Samsung places additional foldable compatibility controls in Settings > Advanced features > Labs on supported devices and software. Labs is experimental, and Samsung warns that its features may not work as expected. The exact list is not identical on every Galaxy Z Fold, so seeing one option but not another is normal.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap Labs.
- Look for an app-compatibility control such as App screen zoom, Landscape view for portrait apps, or a full-screen split-screen option.
- Apply the relevant option to the affected app, then force-close and reopen that app.
App screen zoom
App screen zoom changes the readable scale of an app. It is different from changing the window’s aspect ratio: zoom can make interface elements easier to read or fit a particular viewing preference, but it does not redesign the app for the nearly square inner display. Use it when the content is present but too small, not when the application is drawing outside the visible bounds.
Landscape view for portrait apps
This Labs option is relevant when a portrait-only app leaves a large unused area or refuses to use the unfolded panel in landscape. If it is offered on your model, test it with the affected app and inspect all edges after reopening. A change in orientation can alter where controls appear, so keep the option only if the complete interface remains accessible.

Full-screen split-screen controls
Some Fold models expose additional Labs controls for split-screen behavior. These controls concern how windows share the inner display; they are not a substitute for an app that has an incompatible internal layout. If the problem appears only when two apps are open, test the relevant split-screen setting separately from the per-app aspect-ratio choice.
Older Fold models: Customized App Aspect Ratios
Supported Galaxy Z Fold models running One UI 3.1.1 may use an older menu name: Labs > Customized App Aspect Ratios. If that page is present, select the affected app and test the four choices Samsung provides:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Full screen expands the app to the available inner display.
- 16:9 keeps the app in a conventional widescreen shape.
- 4:3 uses a squarer legacy shape.
- App default leaves the ratio decision to the application.
Change one option at a time, force-close the app, and reopen the exact workflow that fails. Record which choice keeps every control visible. The menu is tied to supported models and software; a newer Fold may expose the same concept through Display > Full screen apps instead, while another model may not show the older page at all.
Why the inner display can still crop an app
A Galaxy Z Fold presents two substantially different shapes. Samsung describes the cover display as similar to a conventional bar-type phone and the main unfolded display as close to square. An application designed around a normal phone ratio therefore has to decide how to behave when the available window becomes much wider or taller than expected.
When the operating system expands such an app, several outcomes are possible:

- The app can draw correctly across the full inner panel.
- The system can preserve the app’s original shape and leave bars or unused space.
- The app can scale its existing layout, making graphics look stretched.
- The app’s own code can place controls outside the visible area, creating apparent cropping even after the system grants it a larger window.
Samsung’s support guidance explicitly cautions that some apps are not compatible with Full screen view. That is why changing the phone setting is a useful test, not a universal repair. The system can change the window offered to an app; it cannot rewrite an app’s menus, fixed-width assets, or touch targets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse this troubleshooting sequence for black bars or clipped controls
When black bars remain
- Confirm that the app is selected under Settings > Display > Full screen apps.
- Choose Full screen and reopen the app while the phone is unfolded.
- If the bars persist, check Settings > Advanced features > Labs for an app-specific compatibility option.
- On a supported One UI 3.1.1 Fold, test Customized App Aspect Ratios with 16:9, 4:3, and Full screen.
If every choice leaves bars, the app may be intentionally preserving its own ratio. Removing the bars would require the app to support the Fold’s inner layout rather than merely receiving a wider window.
When Full screen cuts off buttons or text
- Return to the app’s aspect-ratio page.
- Switch to App default and force-close the app.
- Reopen the same screen and check whether the missing controls return.
- If the app is still clipped, test 16:9 or 4:3 where those choices are available.
Keep the option that leaves the complete interface usable, even if it does not fill every pixel. A visible control is more valuable than a larger window that prevents navigation.
When only portrait apps behave badly
Open Advanced features > Labs and look for Landscape view for portrait apps. Apply it only to the affected app, reopen it, and inspect the full interface. If the app still reserves a phone-shaped area, its layout may not support the inner display’s proportions.
When the issue appears after switching between screens
Check the app on the unfolded inner display and then on the closed cover display. Samsung indicates that the available controls can differ by screen. A choice that looks correct on the cover may not be appropriate for the inner panel, so make the comparison after each setting change rather than assuming one result applies identically to both.

When a setting appears to do nothing
Force-close the app after changing the option and launch it again. Then verify that you changed the entry for the correct application, not a similarly named companion app. If the menu remains unavailable, use the Labs path and note which options your model actually provides; experimental features are not guaranteed on every Fold.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to test a setting without creating a new problem
Use a repeatable check instead of relying on a quick visual impression. Open the app to the page where cropping is obvious, change only one setting, force-close it, and return to that page. Check the top, bottom, left, and right edges for hidden controls. Open a second page with text or forms, because fixed-width layouts often fail in places that a video or image does not expose.
Also test the app after folding and unfolding once. The cover and inner panels have different proportions, and an app may preserve a window state from one screen when it moves to the other. If the app becomes usable only after relaunching, include that relaunch in your normal routine until an update addresses the behavior.
| What you observe | Most useful next test | How to interpret the result |
|---|---|---|
| Unused space but all controls work | Try Full screen | Expansion may improve the experience without risking navigation |
| Full screen enlarges content but clips controls | Return to App default, then test 16:9 or 4:3 | The app’s layout is not safely adapting to the widest window |
| Portrait app leaves most of the inner panel unused | Check Landscape view for portrait apps in Labs | The orientation policy may be limiting the usable area |
| No Full screen apps page | Open Advanced features > Labs | Your software may expose compatibility controls elsewhere or experimentally |
| Different behavior on cover and inner screens | Test each screen after reopening the app | The two displays require separate evaluation because their shapes differ |
What App screen zoom can and cannot fix
App screen zoom belongs in a different decision category from aspect-ratio controls. If every part of the interface is visible but labels or buttons are uncomfortable to read, zoom may improve legibility. If a button is outside the visible area, zoom alone cannot repair the app’s constraints; changing the window shape or using the app’s default ratio is the more relevant test.
After changing zoom, reopen the app and check both text-heavy and control-heavy screens. A scale that helps one page can make another page crowded. Because Labs features are experimental, revert the option if it introduces new overlap or unexpected behavior.
Best Value
The durable fix is an app update built for foldables
Phone settings are immediate, per-device workarounds. A lasting solution requires the app developer to support multiple window shapes and the transition between the cover and inner displays. Samsung’s developer guidance explains that the cover ratio is phone-like while the main display is close to square, and points developers to Android minAspectRatio and maxAspectRatio constraints when content cannot safely use every ratio.
Update the affected app and One UI after you have tested the available settings. If the behavior remains, report it to the app developer with the exact Galaxy Z Fold model, One UI version, app version, display on which the problem occurs, and the setting you tested. Include whether Full screen, App default, 16:9, or 4:3 changed the result. That information distinguishes a system-window issue from an internal layout defect.
An app update can add responsive layouts, safe aspect-ratio limits, and correct handling when the window changes during folding. Those changes cannot be supplied by a case, screen protector, or external accessory; the cropping originates in how the application lays out its content.

- Reproduce the problem on the unfolded inner display.
- Set the affected app to Full screen under Display > Full screen apps.
- Force-close and reopen the app, then check every edge and a second screen.
- If controls are clipped, compare App default, then 16:9 or 4:3 where available.
- If the standard page is missing, inspect Advanced features > Labs for App screen zoom, Landscape view for portrait apps, or related compatibility controls.
- On supported One UI 3.1.1 models, test the choices under Customized App Aspect Ratios.
- Install app and One UI updates. If no setting produces a complete, usable interface, send the developer the model, software versions, display, and observed behavior.
The practical goal is not simply to eliminate every black bar. It is to find the widest layout that keeps all content and controls accessible. When the app itself is not compatible with the Fold’s nearly square inner display, App default or a legacy ratio can be the safer choice until the developer ships a foldable-aware update.
