How to Make Apple Watch Series 10 Battery Last Longer

The most effective way to extend Apple Watch Series 10 runtime is to turn on Low Power Mode when you need it, then make narrower changes—such as disabling Always On or reducing background refresh—when you want to preserve more features. For long outdoor workouts, Apple also provides a reduced GPS and heart-rate sampling option.

Apple rates Series 10 for up to 18 hours of normal use or up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode, but those are controlled-test estimates, not guaranteed results for every owner. Your watch age, cellular signal, settings, workout length, notifications and usage all affect the result.

What Apple’s battery figures actually mean

Apple’s Series 10 technical specifications list up to 18 hours of normal use and up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode. Apple tested pre-production GPS and GPS + Cellular watches in August 2024 while paired with an iPhone. The figures describe a defined test profile rather than a promise that every watch will reach that runtime.

Rating Apple’s test profile How to interpret it
Up to 18 hours, normal use 300 time checks, 90 notifications, 15 minutes of app use and a 60-minute workout with Bluetooth audio over 18 hours A laboratory-style estimate under Apple’s specified settings and usage pattern
Up to 36 hours, Low Power Mode 600 time checks, 180 notifications, 30 minutes of app use and a 60-minute Bluetooth-audio workout over 36 hours A separate controlled estimate with power-saving restrictions enabled

Apple says actual battery life varies with use, configuration, mobile network, signal strength and many other factors. A cellular watch searching for a weak signal, a long GPS workout, frequent screen use or heavy notifications can therefore fall well below the advertised maximum. Conversely, a watch that stays near its paired iPhone and does little background work may last longer than a particular owner expects from a busy day.

Choose the right battery-saving change

Change Best use Feature trade-off
Low Power Mode When you need the largest built-in reduction for a day, travel or an event Some notifications, connections and health measurements are delayed, limited or disabled
Turn off Always On When you want a targeted display change while keeping most other functions The screen no longer remains visibly available at wrist-down; raise your wrist or tap to view it
Limit Background App Refresh When particular apps do not need fresh data between uses Those apps may show older information until opened
Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings Long outdoor walks, runs or hikes Lower sampling detail; some workout alerts and data are unavailable
Efficient connectivity When your iPhone is nearby or cellular coverage is poor Staying near the iPhone or using Wi-Fi can reduce the freedom of an independent cellular connection

Turn on Low Power Mode when runtime matters most

Low Power Mode is Apple’s broadest built-in battery measure. It disables or limits several power-hungry functions instead of changing only the display.

From Control Center

  1. Press the watch’s side button to open Control Center.
  2. Tap the battery percentage.
  3. Turn on Low Power Mode.

From Settings

  1. Open Settings on the watch.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Low Power Mode and choose the available duration or turn it on.

Low Power Mode turns off Always On and disables background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements. It can also restrict some Wi-Fi and cellular behavior and delay notifications. Apple warns that some emergency alerts may not arrive while the mode is active, so do not enable it blindly when you depend on immediate safety notifications.

The mode turns off automatically after the battery rises above 80 percent unless you selected a timed duration. If you need normal health measurements, prompt notifications or full connectivity, use a narrower setting instead of leaving Low Power Mode enabled continuously.

Turn off Always On for a focused battery improvement

Always On is useful when you want the time and complications visible without raising your wrist, but it keeps the display system active in a dimmed state. To disable it:

  1. Open Settings on the watch.
  2. Tap Display & Brightness.
  3. Tap Always On.
  4. Switch Always On off.

With Always On disabled, the display dims when your wrist is down and becomes readable when you raise your wrist or interact with it. Series 10 can update information more often than older models while the wrist is down when Always On is active, which is convenient but can require more display activity.

Apple also lets you limit what appears in the dimmed state. Depending on the watch face and installed apps, you can reduce complication data, app content, notifications or Live Activities shown while the display is dim. This is useful when you want a glanceable face but do not need every data source updating visibly.

Reduce Background App Refresh without breaking useful updates

Background App Refresh allows apps to update information before you open them. Disable it for apps that do not need timely data, while leaving it enabled for apps whose complications or information you regularly rely on.

  1. Open Settings on the watch.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Background App Refresh.
  4. Switch off refresh for individual apps, or turn off the global Background App Refresh control to stop it broadly.

Selective changes are usually more practical than disabling everything: a weather, calendar or travel complication may be useful when it refreshes, while a rarely opened app can wait until you launch it. There is an important exception: complications on the current watch face continue to refresh even when Background App Refresh is off. If a face is packed with data-heavy complications, simplify the face or remove complications you do not need.

Extend battery during long outdoor workouts

GPS and repeated heart-rate readings can be significant battery loads during a long outdoor walk, run or hike. On Series 10, Apple provides two related controls: Low Power Mode and Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings.

Enable reduced readings

  1. Open Settings on the watch.
  2. Tap Workout.
  3. Turn on Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings.
  4. For the workout itself, turn on Low Power Mode when you need the broadest savings.

Apple supports the reduced-reading feature on Series 8 and later with watchOS 9.1 or later, which includes Series 10. It lowers GPS and heart-rate sampling rather than preserving the full measurement frequency.

Understand what you give up

Reduced readings can extend use during a long workout, but the route and heart-rate record contains fewer samples. Apple’s Low Power Mode guidance says alerts, splits and segments are turned off in this reduced-reading configuration, and current pace may be unavailable. If precise pacing, frequent heart-rate feedback or detailed splits matters more than finishing with maximum charge, keep full readings and carry a charging plan instead.

For a short workout, the normal sampling setting is generally the better choice because the battery cost is limited and the recorded data is more complete. For an all-day hike or ultra-distance effort, reduced readings are a deliberate compromise rather than a free improvement.

Use the most efficient connection available

Connectivity behavior can change battery use even when you do not actively use an app. Apple says the watch is most efficient when it is connected by Bluetooth to its paired iPhone. If the iPhone is away, Wi-Fi generally uses less power than a mobile network. A strong signal also uses less power than a weak one because the watch does not have to work as hard to maintain the connection.

  • Keep the paired iPhone nearby when you do not need independent cellular operation.
  • Prefer Wi-Fi to cellular when the phone is away and a reliable Wi-Fi network is available.
  • Use Airplane Mode in areas with weak or absent coverage when you do not need calls, messages, data or other wireless connections. This prevents repeated attempts to find a network, but it also cuts off those connections until you turn wireless features back on.

Do not use Airplane Mode during a situation in which you need emergency communication or location-related connectivity. The setting is most useful on flights, in remote dead zones or during storage when communication is not required.

Change audio habits during workouts and travel

Apple says playing audio through the watch’s built-in speaker can drain the battery faster than using Bluetooth headphones. For a long workout, pair Bluetooth headphones if you need music or spoken guidance and want to avoid the speaker’s higher power demand.

Audio streaming over a cellular connection combines radio use with playback and can be more demanding than locally available audio played while the watch remains connected to the iPhone. When practical, keep the iPhone nearby, use downloaded audio and choose Bluetooth headphones. These steps reduce the number of high-power tasks occurring at once without disabling workout tracking.

Diagnose sudden drain after a watchOS update

A noticeable drop immediately after an update does not always indicate a failed battery. Apple says update-related background work can continue after the watch becomes usable. That work may temporarily affect runtime while the system completes indexing, migration or other housekeeping.

  1. Note when the update finished and whether the drain began at the same time.
  2. Keep normal settings for several days unless you need emergency runtime immediately.
  3. After a few days, compare a similar day of use rather than judging one unusually busy day.
  4. If runtime remains poor, check Battery Health and contact Apple Support if the watch reports a service condition.

Waiting a few days is not a cure for every problem; it is Apple’s guidance for separating temporary post-update work from persistent battery degradation. If the watch becomes unusually hot, shuts down unexpectedly or loses charge while idle, stop treating it as normal update behavior and arrange support.

Check Battery Health and Maximum Capacity

To inspect the battery’s condition:

  1. Open Settings on the watch.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Battery Health.
  4. Review Maximum Capacity.

Maximum Capacity is the battery’s capacity relative to when it was new. A lower percentage means the battery can store less energy than it did originally, so identical settings and usage can produce shorter runtime as the watch ages.

If the screen says Battery Needs Service, or you suspect the battery requires replacement, contact Apple Support rather than attempting an unverified repair. Apple describes battery life as a combination of watch age and how you use it; no setting can restore capacity lost through chemical aging.

A practical routine for a long day

Use this sequence when you know the watch must last until late evening, a flight lands or an outdoor activity ends:

  1. Charge before leaving and confirm the watch is not showing a service warning in Battery Health.
  2. Keep the paired iPhone nearby when independent cellular use is unnecessary.
  3. Turn off Always On if you can accept raising your wrist to view the display.
  4. Disable Background App Refresh for apps that do not need fresh information, and remove unnecessary complications from the current face.
  5. For a long outdoor workout, decide whether reduced GPS and heart-rate readings are acceptable before starting; enable them in Settings > Workout.
  6. Turn on Low Power Mode when the remaining runtime matters more than full notifications, connectivity and health measurements.
  7. Use Bluetooth headphones instead of the built-in speaker for extended audio.
  8. Use Airplane Mode only when wireless communication is not needed and weak coverage would otherwise keep the radios searching.

These controls are independent. You can use only the one that solves your problem—for example, Always On off for everyday use—or combine them temporarily for a long hike. The more aggressive the combination, the more likely you are to lose timely alerts, detailed workout data or health measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a setting is the wrong fix

  • Notifications arrive late: check whether Low Power Mode is enabled before changing app settings. Delayed notifications are an expected trade-off of that mode.
  • Workout data looks sparse: review Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings. Reduced sampling intentionally produces fewer measurements and can remove pace, split or segment information.
  • The watch still drains quickly after several days: review Maximum Capacity and any Battery Needs Service message instead of repeatedly toggling settings.
  • Drain is worst in a poor-signal area: move near the iPhone, use reliable Wi-Fi or enable Airplane Mode if connectivity is not needed.
  • A data complication stays current despite Background App Refresh being off: complications on the active watch face are exempt from that global or per-app change.

The bottom line

Start with Low Power Mode when you need maximum endurance, but understand that it can delay notifications, restrict connections, disable Always On and stop background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements; some emergency alerts may not arrive. For a less disruptive everyday change, turn off Always On and trim Background App Refresh, especially on a complication-heavy watch face. Long outdoor workouts benefit from fewer GPS and heart-rate readings only when you accept reduced sampling and missing workout details. If the drain began after an update, wait a few days; if it persists, inspect Battery Health and seek service when indicated.
