To make an MC Eternal server, download the matching MC Eternal server pack from its CurseForge project, extract it into a dedicated folder, launch the included Forge server files with a compatible Java runtime, accept the Minecraft EULA, and give every player the identical MC Eternal and Forge version. Plan for at least 5.5 GB of allocated RAM; the project’s detailed guidance recommends 8 GB or more. For players outside your home network, allow the server through the host firewall and forward the listening port (commonly TCP 25565) on your router.

What an MC Eternal server is
MC Eternal is a large Forge modpack for Minecraft: Java Edition 1.12.2. A server is not made by installing only the ordinary Minecraft launcher profile: the server needs the modpack’s server files, Forge libraries, configuration, and world directory. Players also need the matching client-side pack and Forge profile.

Its description advertises “Over 1,000 quests and challenges to complete!” and the project page snapshot showed 4,847,572 downloads. Those figures describe the project page at the time it was accessed, not a guarantee of current download totals or that every release has identical files.
The server setup is compatible only with Minecraft Java Edition. Bedrock clients, vanilla clients, and a different Forge or MC Eternal release cannot join a correctly configured 1.12.2 server.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
You can run the server on a computer you control or rent a managed Minecraft server. Self-hosting gives you direct access to files and hardware, while managed hosting removes much of the networking and maintenance work.
| Consideration | Self-hosted computer | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront and recurring cost | Uses your existing computer and internet connection; electricity and hardware costs are yours. | Requires a recurring hosting plan. Current prices and promotions vary by provider and region and are not established here. |
| Files, mods, and backups | Complete control over the server folder, scripts, configs, and backup destination. | Control depends on the host panel and plan; confirm whether full file access and automated backups are included. |
| Setup effort | You install Java, extract the pack, accept the EULA, configure the firewall, and usually set router forwarding. | The host provisions the machine and usually supplies a panel, but you still select the correct pack and configure gameplay. |
| Maintenance responsibility | You handle Java compatibility, Forge/modpack updates, crashes, backups, uptime, and security. | The provider handles the physical host and panel; pack updates, world backups, and many configuration decisions remain yours. |
| Latency and region | Latency depends on the host computer and home upload route. | You can generally select a data-center region; distance from that region affects player latency. |
| Getting friends connected | You send a reachable IP address or hostname and port after networking is configured. | A panel normally supplies an address. CurseForge Servers also supports a direct link or import code that can add the server profile and connection details to friends’ CurseForge apps. |
The MC Eternal project page promotes a managed hosting option and says its servers are preconfigured. Treat the project’s 5.5 GB minimum and 8 GB-plus recommendation as planning guidance, and verify a host’s current price, location, included backups, modpack support, and promotion before paying. CurseForge Servers provides a paid workflow in which you choose the modpack, plan, region, and server details, then administer the provisioned server through its hosting panel.

A computer or hosting plan with enough memory
The project states, “It is recommended to have at least 5,5G ram allocated to your server.” Its detailed description recommends 8 GB or more. Use 5.5 GB as a practical floor for a small installation and 8 GB as the safer starting point for a busy world. Actual needs rise with simultaneous players, exploration, chunk loading, view distance, automation-heavy bases, and other processes sharing the machine. Allocated server memory is not the same as total physical RAM: the operating system and your desktop need memory too.

- For a dedicated machine, leave headroom beyond the amount assigned to Java.
- Do not allocate all available RAM; the operating system, file cache, and background services still need it.
- If the server reports out-of-memory errors or long pauses, lower view distance and investigate the workload before continually increasing the heap.
A compatible Java runtime
MC Eternal targets Forge on Minecraft 1.12.2. The project information does not state one universal Java major version, so install a Java runtime that can launch the selected 1.12.2 Forge server and use the same runtime consistently. Check that the command available to the server script is the intended installation by running java -version. If the Forge launcher exits immediately, inspect the console output for the Java compatibility error rather than guessing a different modpack version.
The correct server pack
Download the server pack for the exact MC Eternal release you want to run. The ordinary client download is not a substitute: clients and servers have different launch files and responsibilities. CurseForge’s server-pack guidance says a normal pack includes a mods directory and a config directory; startup scripts and server.properties may also be included.
Storage, network, and permissions
- Use a dedicated directory with enough free storage for the extracted pack, Forge libraries, logs, and a growing world.
- On Windows, use an account that can create files and allow Java through the firewall. On Linux, use a dedicated user rather than running the server as root.
- For internet play, you need router access to create a port-forwarding rule unless your host or network already provides a reachable address.
- Keep a separate backup destination; a backup stored only inside the live server directory does not protect you from disk failure or accidental deletion.
Download and extract the MC Eternal server pack
- Open the MC Eternal project’s Files section on CurseForge.
- Select the release that all players intend to use. If you choose release 1.6.3.1, record that exact version and its December 16, 2024 release date so everyone installs the same files.
- Download the file identified as the server pack, not a client profile or an unrelated add-on.
- Create a new folder used only for this server, such as an MC Eternal server directory on a dedicated drive or your hosting panel’s server root.
- Extract the archive directly into that folder. Avoid nesting the real files several levels deep, because startup scripts may expect
mods, config, and the Forge files beside them. - Confirm that the extracted folder contains the pack’s
modsandconfigdirectories. Preserve any included launch scripts, libraries, and server configuration files.
Do not mix files from two MC Eternal releases. If you change releases, make a complete world backup first and use the server pack belonging to the new release. A modpack update can change configs, mods, or world behavior.

First launch on Windows
Set memory in the supplied batch file
The MC Eternal instructions for a self-hosted Windows installation say to add the -Xms and -Xmx memory flags manually to the .bat file. Open the supplied start script in a text editor and add the values to the Java command, retaining the Forge launcher filename and any arguments already present. A typical pattern is java -Xms5G -Xmx8G -jar forge-server.jar nogui; use the actual launcher filename in your extracted pack rather than renaming files to match this example.
-Xms is the initial heap and -Xmx is the maximum heap. A setting such as 5 GB initial and 8 GB maximum is only an example starting point; the project’s published floor is 5.5 GB, so set a value that meets that guidance when your machine has sufficient physical memory. If the included script already defines memory flags, edit those values instead of adding a second conflicting Java command.
Run the script once
- Double-click the supplied Windows start script from the server folder.
- Allow the first launch to finish creating Forge files, logs, and the initial world files. The first run may stop rather than present a playable server.
- Close the console with the server’s
stopcommand when it is ready, rather than killing the process. - Open the newly created
eula.txtfile, read the Minecraft EULA, and change onlyeula=falsetoeula=trueif you agree to it. - Start the same script again. The server should generate or load the world and eventually show a console message indicating that it is ready for connections.
If no EULA file appears, the first launch probably failed earlier. Read the console and log output for a missing Java executable, a permission problem, or an incorrectly extracted archive.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
First launch on Linux or another host
- Upload or extract the server pack into its own directory on the host.
- Check Java with
java -version. If several runtimes are installed, configure the startup script to call the compatible one explicitly. - Make the supplied launcher executable, for example with
chmod +x, then run it from the server directory so relative paths resolve correctly. - Let the server perform its initial file creation, stop it cleanly, and edit
eula.txtto seteula=trueonly after reading the EULA. - Start the launcher again inside a persistent terminal session or service manager so it continues running after you disconnect.
Use the script included in your selected server pack whenever possible. Forge filenames and script arguments differ between pack releases, so copying a command from an unrelated 1.12.2 installation can launch the wrong files.
Configure the server after the EULA
Stop the server before making broad configuration changes, then edit server.properties in the server folder. Restart after saving so the settings are loaded.
- server-port: The default Minecraft port is commonly 25565. You may choose another unused port, but the firewall rule, router forwarding rule, and address you give friends must all use the same number.
- motd: Set a short name that players will recognize in the multiplayer list.
- max-players: Set a limit appropriate for your hardware and connection rather than assuming the pack can support unlimited players.
- view-distance: Lowering this value reduces the amount of world data the server must keep active and send, which can help a heavily loaded installation.
- online-mode: Leave authentication enabled unless you understand the security consequences of changing it. Disabling it can allow impersonation and is not a performance fix.
Use the console for access control and safe shutdown. Common commands include whitelist on, whitelist add PlayerName, op PlayerName, save-all, and stop. Grant operator status only to people you trust. Keep the whitelist enabled for a private friends’ server and remove names you no longer recognize.

Make the server reachable from the internet
Allow Java through the host firewall
When the server first listens, your operating system may ask whether Java can communicate on private networks. Allow the Java executable used by the server on the network profile you actually use. If you configure rules manually, allow inbound TCP traffic on the selected server port, commonly 25565, and avoid opening unrelated ports.
Forward the port on your router
- Give the host computer a stable local address, preferably through a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Create a port-forwarding rule from the chosen external TCP port to that computer’s local address and the same internal port.
- Save the rule and restart the server if necessary.
- Test from outside your home network, such as with a friend’s connection or a mobile hotspot. Testing only from the host can succeed even when the router is not forwarding correctly.
Mojang’s Java server guidance notes that firewall and port configuration may be required for outside connections. Some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound forwarding; in that case, ask the provider for a public address or use a managed host instead. Do not publish your home IP address in a public forum. Give friends the public address or hostname and port privately, and explain that players on the same home network may need the host’s local address instead.
Install the matching client and connect
- Have every player install the same MC Eternal release as the server, including the same Forge profile and mod files.
- Launch Minecraft Java Edition with that profile and wait at the title screen.
- Choose Multiplayer, then Add Server or Direct Connect.
- Enter the server’s reachable address. Include
:portonly when the server uses a non-default port; for a standard setup, the address alone normally uses 25565. - Connect only after the server console is fully started. The first login can take longer while chunks and player data are prepared.
Never add random client-only mods to solve a server mismatch. Compare the pack version, Forge version, and mod list with the server’s extracted files. MC Eternal’s large mod set makes an apparently minor version difference enough to reject a connection.
Performance, backups, and updates
Watch the real workload
Start with the project’s 5.5 GB minimum guidance or its 8 GB-plus recommendation, then observe memory use, pauses, and tick performance during normal play. Exploration, chunk generation, automated machines, and many entities can stress the server even when the Java heap is not full. Lower view distance, reduce unnecessary background programs, and move the server to faster storage before assuming that more RAM alone will fix every lag spike.
Back up the world safely
- Warn players that maintenance is starting.
- Run
save-allfrom the console. - Use
stopand wait for the process to exit. - Copy the complete world directory and important server files to a separate disk or storage account.
- Label backups with the MC Eternal version and date so you do not restore a world into an incompatible installation by mistake.
Keep several generations of backups. Before changing the modpack release, make an additional full backup and test that it can be opened or restored on a separate copy.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The window closes immediately. | Java is missing or incompatible, the script points to a wrong file, or extraction is incomplete. | Run the script from a terminal, check java -version, verify the Forge launcher and libraries are present, and read the first error in the log. |
| The server says the EULA has not been accepted. | eula.txt still contains eula=false. |
Read the EULA, set eula=true, save the file, and restart the same launcher. |
| A player gets a missing-mod or mismatched-mod error. | The client and server use different MC Eternal, Forge, or individual mod versions. | Install the exact server release on the client and remove extra or outdated mods. Do not alter the server’s mod list casually. |
| The server reports out-of-memory errors or severe pauses. | Too little heap, insufficient total physical RAM, high view distance, or a busy world. | Confirm the -Xms/-Xmx values, leave memory for the operating system, lower view distance, stop competing applications, and inspect logs before increasing the allocation. |
| Players on the same network can join, but friends cannot. | Firewall, router forwarding, changing public IP, or carrier-grade NAT. | Check the inbound rule and port-forward target, test the public address from outside, and ask the internet provider whether inbound connections are possible. |
| The server appears online but rejects everyone. | The server is still starting, the wrong port is advertised, or authentication/whitelist settings block the player. | Wait for the ready message, confirm the port in server.properties, check whitelist entries, and review the console for the exact rejection reason. |
Final launch checklist
- MC Eternal server pack and client profile are the same release.
- Minecraft Java Edition 1.12.2 and the required Forge files are being used.
- The selected Java runtime launches the Forge server without errors.
- Memory flags meet the project’s 5.5 GB minimum guidance; 8 GB or more is available when the workload warrants it.
- The first launch completed, the EULA was accepted, and the server restarts cleanly.
server.properties, whitelist, operators, and port are configured intentionally.- Firewall and router rules expose only the chosen Minecraft port.
- A tested backup exists outside the live server directory.
- Friends have the exact pack version and the correct address and port.
