CSS cannot erase a solid background that is already baked into an image. To get genuine see-through areas, use an image whose pixels contain transparency—commonly a PNG with an alpha channel—and place it over the page or a containing element with the background you want visible. If you only want a faded image, use opacity; if you want a translucent panel color while keeping its text opaque, put alpha in background-color.
First identify what “transparent background” means
The phrase describes several different effects. Choosing the wrong CSS property is the reason many attempts appear not to work.

A .png filename alone does not prove that any pixels are transparent. A checkerboard visible in the artwork may be deliberately drawn into the image. Open the file in an editor that displays an alpha channel, or place it over a vivid test color in the browser.
Use a genuinely transparent image
PNG stores an alpha value for pixels. During compositing, the visible result can be represented as output = alpha * foreground + (1-alpha) * background. The PNG specification describes the file as defining the foreground and transparency mask, not the background image: PNG specification, section 10.8.

That means the web page supplies the color seen through the transparent areas. The following complete example makes this obvious by using a blue frame rather than a white page.

</html>Replace logo-transparent.png with an image that actually has transparent pixels. display: block removes the small inline-image baseline gap, while max-width: 100% prevents the image from overflowing its frame.
Using the image as a CSS background
For decorative artwork, put the color behind the background image and provide a fallback color in case the image cannot load.

If you meant “make the whole image lighter”
Apply opacity to the image element:

}Values range from 0 (fully transparent) to 1 (fully opaque); values between them are translucent. This does not remove a white rectangle baked into a photograph or logo. It merely blends that rectangle and the foreground together. MDN notes that “opacity applies to the element as a whole, including its contents”: CSS opacity reference.
If the source already has transparent areas, those areas still show the parent background, but the visible foreground is also faded by the opacity value.
If you meant “make only the element’s color translucent”
Do not lower opacity on a container that contains text, buttons, or other children. Use an alpha color instead:

The card’s background blends with what is behind it while its text remains fully opaque. The same syntax works with other color spaces that support an alpha component.

When the white background is baked into the file
CSS has no general selector that identifies “white pixels” inside an ordinary image and deletes them. A declaration such as background: transparent affects the element behind the image; it does not alter opaque pixels in the image file.
- Open the source in an image editor that supports transparency.
- Select and remove the unwanted solid background, checking edges at high zoom.
- Export with transparency preserved, typically as a PNG.
- Replace the old asset URL in your HTML or CSS.
- Test it over both a light and a dark CSS background to find halos or missed pixels.
If the background and foreground have similar colors, automatic selection may leave a fringe. Cleaning edge pixels in the editor is often necessary; no CSS property can repair those pixels after they have been exported as opaque.
Selective effects with CSS masking
Masking is useful when you want a gradient fade, a rounded reveal, or another region-based effect without editing the original bitmap. A mask can use alpha or luminance to determine which parts of an element are visible.

Common mistakes and fixes
The white rectangle is still visible
- Cause: The file contains opaque white pixels, or the checkerboard was drawn into the artwork.
- Fix: Verify the alpha channel in an editor and export a corrected asset. Changing the element’s background cannot remove those pixels.
The entire logo, including its edges, looks faded
- Cause:
opacitywas applied to the image or an ancestor. - Fix: Remove that opacity when you need crisp foreground pixels. Use alpha in a specific
background-colorif only a panel should be translucent.
Transparent areas appear white
- Cause: The parent or page background is white, or a later CSS rule overrides the intended color.
- Fix: Set an explicit background on the containing element and inspect it in DevTools. A transparent pixel reveals whatever is actually behind it.
The image has a checkerboard pattern
- Cause: The checkerboard may be real artwork rather than an editor’s transparency indicator.
- Fix: Put the image over a solid color and inspect the file’s alpha channel; do not rely on the preview alone.
Only part of the image should disappear
- Cause: You are trying to use whole-element opacity for a region-specific effect.
- Fix: Prepare a source image with the required alpha mask, or apply a CSS mask when the effect can remain presentation-only.
Text inside a translucent panel is washed out
- Cause: Opacity was set on the panel container, which affects descendants.
- Fix: Replace container opacity with an alpha-valued
background-color.
The CSS background image vanishes when the asset fails
- Cause: No fallback color was declared.
- Fix: Set
background-colorseparately frombackground-imageso the layout retains a useful color if the request fails.
Choosing the right method
- Choose a transparent PNG when the transparency must be part of the asset and work wherever the file is used.
- Choose
opacitywhen the complete rendered image should fade uniformly. - Choose an alpha
background-colorwhen only a color layer should blend and child content must stay solid. - Choose masking when visibility needs to vary by region but editing the source file is undesirable.
These methods can be combined. For example, a transparent logo can sit on a colored hero, and the logo can then receive a modest opacity value. Remember that the source alpha and the CSS effect are separate stages in rendering.
