To recover a stream, identify which connection failed, check YouTube’s ingest settings, and choose the right recovery layer: HTTP input retries, a supervisor that restarts an exited FFmpeg process, or a rehearsed backup encoder for production failover.
First, identify what needs to reconnect
A live FFmpeg setup can fail at several different points. The fix depends on which one failed; an option that helps an HTTP source input does not automatically repair the publishing connection to YouTube.
- HTTP input disconnected: FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol has reconnect options for HTTP behavior such as network errors, end-of-file, and certain response codes. They apply to the HTTP protocol, not as a universal output retry mechanism. See the FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation.
- YouTube ingest output failed: If FFmpeg is publishing to YouTube over RTMP(S), adding HTTP
reconnect_*flags does not establish that FFmpeg will reconnect the output. The reviewed official documentation does not provide a verified RTMP output retry switch. - FFmpeg exited: A service manager or wrapper can start a new FFmpeg process after the old one exits. That is process supervision, not seamless stream recovery; YouTube may show an interruption, and the live event’s behavior must be checked in Live Control Room.
- Encoder or path failure during a high-stakes event: A separately prepared backup encoder is a distinct resilience layer. YouTube recommends rehearsing the switch and confirming the player rolls over.
Check the YouTube destination and encoder settings
Verify the current stream URL and key
Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room into the encoder configuration. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials that direct and authorize the feed, so keep the key private: do not publish it in a command example, paste it into public logs, or share it with anyone who does not need access. If YouTube reports a key-related encoder start error, follow its stream key troubleshooting guidance and obtain or update the key through Live Control Room.
Match the ingest protocol and encoding
YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents CBR video bitrate encoding, supported ingest codecs including H.264, H.265, and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec and resolution; consult the current YouTube encoder settings table rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream.

A command’s output protocol, muxer, codecs, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval all need to match the selected YouTube ingest configuration. A command starting without an immediate error does not prove that the feed is healthy; inspect Live Control Room’s preview and stream health indicators.
Use a schematic command carefully
ffmpeg [input and encoding options] -f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This is a placeholder structure, not a tested or complete encoding recipe. Replace the destination with the current URL and key from Live Control Room, and verify the full configuration against YouTube’s current ingest requirements. Do not append HTTP reconnect_* options to this RTMP(S) destination and assume they implement output reconnection. FFmpeg options and defaults can vary by version and build; check your installed build with ffmpeg -h protocol=http and consult the current FFmpeg documentation.

Make an HTTP input retry only when the source is HTTP
If the part that disconnects is an HTTP input, FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options may be relevant. The documented options cover behaviors such as retrying after HTTP network errors, treating EOF as an error, and handling selected HTTP response codes. Read the option descriptions and defaults in the installed FFmpeg build before applying them; do not transfer their meaning to an RTMP(S) publishing URL.
The direction matters: -i https://... is an HTTP input, while an rtmps://... destination is an output. A source reconnect may restore incoming media but does not by itself ensure that the separate YouTube publishing connection recovers.

Restart FFmpeg after a process exit
If FFmpeg terminates when the output fails, use an operating-system service manager or wrapper to detect the exit and start the command again. Configure a bounded or increasing delay between attempts, preserve useful logs, and cap or alert on repeated failures. Otherwise, a bad key, invalid option, or persistent configuration error can trigger an endless restart loop without restoring the stream.
Supervision can restart a process; it cannot guarantee that no frames are lost, that a reconnect is seamless, or that YouTube will keep the same live event active. After a restart, inspect FFmpeg’s logs and Live Control Room. Rehearse the exact command and restart behavior in an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream before relying on it for an event.

Use a backup encoder for production failover
A second encoder addresses a different failure layer from restarting the original FFmpeg process. YouTube’s live encoder failover guidance recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player switches to the backup.
During rehearsal, check the player transition, Live Control Room preview, viewer access, audio and video quality, and whether any local archive continues to grow and remains intact. A backup that has never been tested with the event’s actual stream configuration is not a verified recovery plan.

Consider HLS only when its trade-offs fit
YouTube supports HLS ingest for compatible encoders, with its own protocol-specific URL, key, backup server information, and segment requirements. It is not a general retry switch. HLS sends media in segments and has greater latency than RTMP, which sends a continuous stream. Before changing a working RTMP(S) setup, confirm encoder support, configure the HLS-specific destination and required settings from YouTube, and decide whether the additional latency is acceptable. Do not assume retry behavior carries over between protocols; see YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.
Troubleshoot a stream that still drops
- HTTP reconnect flags appear to have no effect: Check whether the failing connection is actually an HTTP input. Those options are scoped to HTTP; they are not verified RTMP(S) output retries.
- YouTube rejects the encoder at startup: Confirm the current Live Control Room URL and key. For a key-related error, obtain a new key through Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.
- The feed connects but stream health is poor: Review protocol, codec, frame rate, CBR, bitrate for the selected codec and resolution, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder table. Check preview and status messages while testing representative motion and audio.
- FFmpeg exits and does not return: Inspect the exit status and logs, then verify that the supervisor is enabled and its restart policy is working. Repeated restarts should prompt investigation of the underlying error, not just a longer retry loop.
- FFmpeg returns but viewers see a break: Treat the interruption as a possible consequence of reconnecting. Check Live Control Room and the viewer-facing player; the reviewed guidance does not guarantee seamless continuity after output loss.
- The connection drops only under load: Check upstream network stability and rehearse under representative conditions. YouTube’s encoder guidance emphasizes testing before going live; do not infer reliability just because the initial connection succeeded.
- You need an alternate ingest route: Consider HLS only if the encoder supports it and the segment settings and added latency suit the event. Configure it using YouTube’s HLS-specific guidance rather than reusing RTMP assumptions.
Choose recovery by failure layer
| Approach | Failure it addresses | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg HTTP reconnect options | HTTP protocol connections, such as an HTTP input | Applies to documented HTTP behavior, not a general RTMP(S) output retry. |
| Process supervisor or wrapper | FFmpeg process exit | Can relaunch the process with logs and a retry policy; does not promise a seamless event or preserve every frame. |
| Backup encoder | Primary encoder or its network path fails | Requires separate preparation and a rehearsed player rollover. |
| HLS ingest | Alternative protocol path for compatible encoders | Requires HLS-specific setup and accepts greater latency than RTMP. |
