1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo reconnect an FFmpeg stream after YouTube drops it, have a process supervisor restart FFmpeg when it fails. Keep the YouTube Live Control Room server URL and stream key in the restart configuration; for a prerecorded cartoon file, loop it with -stream_loop -1 and pace it with -re. FFmpeg’s familiar -reconnect options are documented for HTTP, not as generic RTMP(S) output-retry switches, so they are not the fix for a dropped YouTube publishing connection.
What a restart can—and cannot—recover
A supervisor can launch a new FFmpeg process and make a fresh publishing connection after the old process exits. That is a practical recovery strategy, not seamless reconnection: playback may be interrupted, and a restarted file may begin at the cartoon’s start. YouTube may not preserve the same viewer-facing live event state.

Retries help with transient connection failures. They will not fix a missing input file, unsupported encoder, invalid server URL, expired or revoked stream key, or persistent loss of internet access. Use both FFmpeg’s log and the stream-health indicator in YouTube Live Control Room to identify which kind of failure occurred.
Why FFmpeg’s -reconnect flags are not the answer
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation places options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, and reconnect_delay_max in its HTTP protocol section. They address HTTP connections, including some HTTP inputs; the documentation does not define them as generic RTMP(S) output reconnection controls. Do not assume they will restart a YouTube live publish connection. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Set up the YouTube publishing details
-
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and copy its exact server URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
-
Prefer the RTMPS server URL if your FFmpeg build supports it. Keep the key secret: do not publish it in an example, expose it in logs, or put it somewhere other users can read in a process listing. Securely inject it into the publishing command or service configuration.

Confirm that the chosen URL, key, codec, and output settings work before relying on automatic retries. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance includes connection troubleshooting; for an SSL error, YouTube says specifying port 443 may help when supported.

Use a retry loop for a prerecorded cartoon file
This illustrative POSIX shell loop restarts FFmpeg after a nonzero exit. It loops a local file and reads it in real time. Set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY securely in the environment before running it; do not replace the placeholders with a real key in shared scripts or logs.
#!/bin/sh
while :; do
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i cartoon.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
status=$?
[ "$status" -eq 0 ] && exit 0
sleep 5
done
This is a starting point, not a tested command or universal preset. The sample video bitrate of 4500k and GOP of 60 frames are examples only. Select a video bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, and set the GOP to about two seconds at the actual frame rate. Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes the selected encoder and that the server URL/key path is correct.
The loop treats a successful FFmpeg exit as completion and exits; a failure waits five seconds before retrying. For an unattended channel, a shell loop is simple but should handle signals and intentional shutdown carefully. A service manager is generally easier to operate persistently: configure its restart policy and delay/backoff, logging, boot-time recovery, and secure handling of the key. In either case, avoid rapid endless retries: increase the wait after repeated failures and cap the delay so a persistent configuration error does not create a retry storm.

Choose settings for the cartoon and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends CBR and a keyframe interval of two seconds, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so choose the matching row rather than copying a number from another format. For example, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p30 is 10 Mbps; that figure is specific to that codec and row, not a general target for every stream. YouTube’s guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, also specifies stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table before broadcasting.

Diagnose failed retries
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits and keeps retrying without publishing | Read the FFmpeg log for a bad URL, rejected key, unavailable file, missing encoder, or network error. | Correct the underlying error first; a restart cannot repair invalid credentials or configuration. |
| The process runs, but YouTube reports poor stream health | Check the Live Control Room health status and whether the chosen bitrate matches the video settings and upload path. | Use YouTube’s current codec/resolution/frame-rate table and test a more reliable upload path. If the encoder is on unstable Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection; it may improve the local link, but it does not make FFmpeg retry. |
| RTMPS fails with an SSL or connection-timeout error | Verify the exact server URL and that the encoder supports RTMPS. | Consult YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting; for an SSL error, port 443 may help when the encoder supports it. |
| The cartoon unexpectedly starts over | The supervisor launched a new FFmpeg process, which reopened the local input from its beginning. | That behavior suits a looping channel when a restart is acceptable. If episode continuity matters, account for the interruption and restart behavior in your workflow. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded cartoons live around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an FFmpeg retry setup: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video to YouTube, not from a camera. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
