How to Make an FFmpeg 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream Recover After a Disconnect

For a temporary network or output failure, route FFmpeg’s FLV output through its FIFO muxer and enable -attempt_recovery 1. FFmpeg’s documented example retries every second indefinitely while continuing to process in real time. This does not restart FFmpeg if the process exits, and it does not guarantee YouTube will resume the same live event after a process restart. Treat those as separate failure cases and test them separately.

What FIFO recovery covers—and what it does not

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt to recover from a temporary output failure, such as a network outage, while FFmpeg remains running. The official example uses FLV as the FIFO format, enables recovery, and sets a one-second recovery wait. Its description says the stream is retried every second indefinitely. See the FFmpeg muxer documentation.

This is output recovery, not process supervision. If FFmpeg crashes or otherwise exits, FIFO cannot restart it. A supervisor is a separate layer, and whether YouTube accepts a publisher reconnecting to the same live event after a process restart must be verified independently. The documentation-derived command below is illustrative, not a tested production command or a promise of gapless playback.

  • 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
  • Video bitrate: 35 Mbps.
  • Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Ingest protocol: RTMPS, which YouTube describes as the secure extension to RTMP.

The same guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, with codec caveats for HDR. Confirm the appropriate codec, SDR or HDR mode, and stream-key settings in the current YouTube live encoder settings and Live Control Room before deploying. Google also documents RTMPS ingestion to YouTube.

Configure FFmpeg’s FIFO output recovery

  1. Keep your working input and encoding settings. The example uses -re -i INPUT and H.264/AAC as an illustrative input and codec pattern. Adapt the input, maps, audio handling, and encoder options to your actual source and intended 3840×2160, 60 fps output.
  2. Use an FLV FIFO output and enable retries. Add -f fifo -fifo_format flv -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1. The one-second wait follows the FFmpeg example; retries are not a guarantee that every build, network, or YouTube event will recover.
  3. Decide whether to drop queued packets on overflow. The official example includes -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1. Dropping queued packets can affect continuity, so include it only if that trade-off is acceptable for your stream and validate the result with your source and network.
  4. Map the streams and use your current YouTube destination. Supply the RTMPS ingestion destination and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private. The sample maps the first video and audio streams; change those maps if your input differs.
  5. Run a controlled recovery test. Temporarily interrupt output while FFmpeg remains alive, then check its logs and whether publishing resumes. Separately test the behavior when FFmpeg exits. Do not treat success in the first test as proof the second case is covered.

Documentation-derived pattern:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a RTMPS_DESTINATION

Replace INPUT and RTMPS_DESTINATION with your actual input and current YouTube RTMPS destination, and retain appropriate encoding options for the source. This pattern does not include a complete 4K encoder configuration; in particular, verify that your actual encoder settings produce the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval.

Plan for the failure types FIFO does not solve

Failure What the cited method covers What to do
Temporary output or network failure while FFmpeg is still processing FIFO can attempt output recovery; the example retries every second indefinitely. Enable FIFO recovery, inspect logs, and test with the real source and network.
FFmpeg process exits The FIFO example does not establish process restart behavior. Use a separate process supervisor if required, then test restart behavior.
YouTube does not accept a publisher reconnect after a restart The cited FFmpeg recovery example does not establish YouTube live-event resumption. Verify event behavior independently in a controlled session; do not assume the same event will resume.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not recover

  • FFmpeg stays alive but output does not resume: inspect FFmpeg’s logs and confirm the output is routed through the FIFO muxer with recovery enabled. Test whether YouTube still accepts the RTMPS destination and stream key shown in Live Control Room.
  • FFmpeg exits: FIFO recovery cannot restart a terminated process. Investigate the process failure and configure a separate supervisor if automatic restart is needed.
  • FFmpeg reconnects but viewers see a gap or the event does not resume: FIFO retry behavior does not promise gapless playback or YouTube event resumption. Test the event behavior separately and account for the possibility of an interruption.
  • Output becomes unstable when packets queue up: review whether -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 is suitable. Dropping packets can trade queued backlog for discontinuity; validate the choice in your actual workflow.
  • Stream is rejected or the quality is not as intended: check the current YouTube settings for codec and SDR/HDR compatibility, 35 Mbps H.264 guidance for 4K/60 fps, CBR, keyframes, RTMPS, and the selected stream key.
