How to Make an AUX Cable for Headphones: Choose the Right Wiring

To make an AUX cable for headphones, first identify the source port, the headphone-side connector and pinout, and whether the cable must carry a microphone signal. Matching plug shape alone is not enough: TRS and TRRS plugs carry different contact arrangements, and a headphone connector can use a model-specific wiring layout.

Decide what the cable needs to carry

For headphone-only listening, the cable needs to carry stereo audio between a compatible source output and the headphones. If you also need a headset microphone, the source must support microphone input through the same connection, and the cable and plug must match that arrangement.

Start with the manuals or manufacturer documentation for both devices. Confirm the port diameter, contact count, signal function, and the headphone’s cable requirements before buying connectors or wiring anything.

Understand TS, TRS, and TRRS plugs

These names describe the contacts separated by insulating bands on a plug: tip, ring, and sleeve. TS has a tip and sleeve, TRS adds one ring, and TRRS adds a second ring. A TRS plug can carry unbalanced stereo headphone audio, but the plug’s appearance does not prove that two devices use a compatible signal scheme. Focusrite explains the connector types and their uses.

  • TRS: Often used for stereo headphone output. Check the source and headphone documentation rather than assuming all TRS ports serve the same purpose.
  • TRRS: Often used for stereo headphone audio plus a microphone signal. The device must support that microphone connection, and its wiring must match the headset.

A headset plug may fit a headphone output physically while still failing to provide microphone functionality. Focusrite notes that its interface headphone outputs provide stereo output but do not accept microphone input; a headset therefore may need a suitable adapter or a separate microphone connection. See Focusrite’s guidance on unusual headset audio.

Check the headphone-side connector and pinout

Do not assume the headphone end is a standard 3.5 mm plug. Some headphones use a proprietary, multi-pin, or model-specific connector, and the contact assignments can differ between models. Find the wiring diagram for the exact headphone model and connector before assembling a cable.

Choose the cable configuration

Headphone-only stereo

If you only need audio playback, choose connectors and wiring that match the source’s stereo output and the headphone’s documented input. A three-contact TRS cable can work for listening in some product-specific cases, but that does not establish compatibility for every headset or device.

  • STAIN & ODOR FREE: Sick of cords absorbing sweat and stinking, or turning into a fuzzy mess in your bag? Our hydrophobic braid repels liquids—coffee simply beads up. Wipe it instantly clean. Zero pilling, and easily survives 20,000+ bends.
  • FIT WITH BULKY CASES: Stop removing thick phone covers to plug in. We engineered a remarkably slim aluminum housing. It slides straight through the tightest protective cutouts, securing a flush connection every time without the daily hassle.
  • SEAMLESS 3.5MM FIT (AUDIO ONLY): Connects perfectly to car stereos, headphones, and home speakers. Note: This 3-pole TRS cord strictly transmits audio. It lacks mic or inline volume controls. Backed by our 3-year brand support.

Stereo audio plus microphone

If the microphone must work through the cable, confirm that the source port accepts headset microphone input and that its TRRS wiring matches the headset. Audeze says the Mobius’s supplied 3.5 mm TRRS cable supports microphone use on devices that support it; a standard three-conductor TRS cable can be used for listening but removes the microphone option. This guidance is specific to the Mobius. See Audeze’s Mobius AUX/analog instructions.

Model-specific or detachable headphone ends

For headphones with detachable cables or separate left and right cup connectors, follow the exact model’s pinout at each end. Do not transfer a wiring diagram from another headphone, even if the connectors look similar.

Plan the build before assembly

  1. Identify the source: Check its documentation for port size, contact count, and whether the port is stereo output only or also supports a microphone.
  2. Identify the headphones: Confirm the connector type at the headphone end and locate the model-specific pinout.
  3. Select matching parts: Use plugs and cable appropriate to the documented contact arrangement. Confirm physical fit and choose a length that suits your setup; the cited sources do not specify a standard cable length.
  4. Use component documentation: Follow the exact plug manufacturer’s datasheet and the headphone maker’s pinout for assembly. There is no universal wire-color code or soldering recipe established by the cited sources.
  5. Check the completed cable: Before connecting it to equipment, use a suitable method to verify continuity and confirm there are no shorts. This is conservative workshop guidance, not a manufacturer-validated test procedure for every cable.

Common compatibility mistakes

  • Choosing by appearance alone: A plug that fits may have the wrong contact count or signal arrangement.
  • Expecting a headphone output to accept a microphone: Stereo output does not imply microphone input support.
  • Using a generic headphone-end wiring diagram: Pin assignments can be specific to the headphone model.
  • Assuming TRRS means universal headset compatibility: The source port must support the microphone function and match the headset’s wiring.
