Then connect OBS to YouTube Live with your stream key and test the complete stream before leaving it running. For a playlist of visuals, OBS can use a VLC Video source instead. The visual loop is only one part of a 24/7 radio stream: your computer and internet connection must remain available, and you need rights to both the music and the visuals.
Plan the animated background
Decide what the viewer should see while the music plays, then make or obtain a video that can repeat without an obvious jump. The OBS and YouTube guidance cited below explains playback and broadcasting, not how to create animation or which editor to use; choose an animation tool that suits your skills and export a local video file OBS can play.

Choose the format and motion
- Match the visual’s aspect ratio to your intended stream layout. A landscape composition is a practical fit for a typical YouTube music stream; keep important elements away from the edges so they are not obscured by player controls.
- Use motion that supports rather than competes with the music. A slowly moving pattern, scene, or waveform can be easier to watch for a long period than rapid cuts or flashing effects.
- For a seamless loop, design the last frame to lead naturally into the first. If that is not practical, choose subtle motion so the repeat is not distracting. This is creative guidance, not a platform requirement.
- Use original visuals or assets whose license explicitly permits continuous public streaming. A license for a still image or personal project may not cover your intended use.
Choose one clip or a playlist
A single video file is the simplest option: OBS repeats it from the beginning. Choose a playlist if you want the picture to change over time. OBS supports a VLC Video source for playlists, but VLC must be installed for that source to be available. OBS documents these options in its Media Sources guide.

- Create a scene: In OBS, select or create the scene that will contain your stream visuals.
- Add the video: In the Sources box, select + and choose Media Source. Give it a recognizable name, such as “Radio background,” then select OK.
- Select the file: In the Media Source properties, choose Local File and browse to your exported video. OBS documents local media playback on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Supported examples include MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; a container or codec that fails on your system may need to be exported in a different supported format.
- Enable repeat: Turn on Loop in the source properties. The setting is off by default, so leaving it unchecked means the video stops when it reaches its end.
- Fit the composition: In the preview, resize or position the source to fill the canvas without stretching it. If the source aspect ratio differs from the canvas, decide whether to crop or leave bars rather than distorting the image.
- Check playback: Start the video in OBS and let it run through the end once. Confirm it restarts, looks correct at the loop point, and does not obscure any text or other sources.
For several clips, add a VLC Video source instead, select the playlist files, and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first if that source is missing. OBS documents Media Source and VLC Video behavior at obsproject.com/kb/media-sources.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio: Create or select a live stream in the Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to use an encoder with a YouTube live stream.
- Copy the connection details: In the Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the requested stream details as the interface offers. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start and verify: Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room for the incoming signal and stream health before making the stream public or relying on it unattended. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.
Set a sustainable stream quality
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on the upload connection and the computer encoding the stream. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include the following examples; they are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or machine can sustain them.
| Output example | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
YouTube also recommends a two-second keyframe interval, no more than four seconds, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and 44.1 kHz stereo audio. Check the current YouTube encoder settings guidance before configuring a different resolution or frame rate.

- Run an upload-speed test and leave capacity for network variation and other devices using the connection.
- Test with audio and visual movement similar to the planned stream. A static scene can behave differently from a moving one.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test. If the signal is unstable, reduce the output demands or improve the connection before starting a long broadcast.
Clear the music and visual rights
You need appropriate rights for both the audio and the background. YouTube says that live streams are scanned for third-party matches, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. A live stream can be interrupted when a match is detected.
A music license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says licensed third-party content may still trigger Content ID unless the rights owner adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm the terms with the rights owner and ask about allowlisting before relying on licensed music for a continuous stream. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Plan for continuous operation
Run OBS on your own computer
With a local OBS setup, the computer running OBS, its internet connection, and the media files all need to remain available. Plan for power, operating-system restarts, network interruptions, and accidental closure of OBS. Check the stream periodically rather than assuming that a successful start means it will remain live indefinitely.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream playing uploaded videos from the cloud. The workflow is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The background stops at the end | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. | Open the source properties and turn on Loop; verify the video restarts after its final frame. |
| VLC Video is not available | VLC is not installed or OBS has not detected it. | Install VLC, restart OBS if needed, then check the Sources add menu again. |
| The picture is stretched, cropped, or has bars | The video and OBS canvas have different aspect ratios or the source was resized unevenly. | Adjust the source in the preview, preserve its proportions, and choose an intentional crop or bars. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The server details, key, or stream setup may be wrong, or the connection may be unavailable. | Check the selected stream in YouTube Studio, confirm the current server URL and key in OBS, and inspect the Live Control Room status. Do not share the key while troubleshooting. |
| The stream buffers or reports poor health | The upload connection or encoding configuration may not sustain the chosen output. | Test the actual settings, reduce resolution or bitrate if needed, and check whether other devices are using the connection. |
| The broadcast is interrupted after starting | A network or encoder interruption, or a third-party content match, may be involved. | Check OBS and YouTube stream health. For a copyright interruption, review YouTube’s notice and resolve the rights or Content ID allowlisting issue with the owner. |
