You can make an Android tablet feel substantially calmer without replacing it: simplify the first home screen, separate visual clutter from notification interruptions, then tune the Kindle app’s reading controls. Start by removing unnecessary favorites and widgets, use Digital Wellbeing Focus mode when you read, and save a low-distraction Kindle theme. These changes alter the interface and reading routine—not the LCD or OLED panel into e-ink—so the result is a less distracting tablet rather than a hardware equivalent of a Kindle.

What “more like a Kindle” can realistically mean

A dedicated e-reader usually presents one obvious purpose: open a book, read, and encounter very few competing alerts. An Android tablet is a general-purpose computer, so the useful goal is to reproduce that sense of purpose through settings:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Less visual noise: keep only a small set of essential apps on the first home screen.
  • Fewer interruptions: pause distracting apps and their notifications while reading.
  • A calmer reading surface: use the Kindle app’s page, text, scrolling, margin, alignment, and theme controls.
  • A repeatable routine: enter the same reading setup instead of changing random settings every session.

Android tablet instructions are not identical across manufacturers, Android releases, or launchers. Google explicitly warns that home-screen steps can vary by device. Treat the paths below as typical Android directions and look for an equivalent label such as Home settings if your tablet uses different wording.

These adjustments do not change the display technology. Grayscale can remove color, and dark mode can change the interface palette, but neither creates the reflective, low-power characteristics of an e-ink screen.

1. Simplify the first home screen

Begin with the screen you see when you unlock the tablet. Removing icons from this page has an immediate effect because you no longer see a catalogue of possible activities before you open a book.

Remove unnecessary favorites

  1. Go to the tablet’s home screen.
  2. Touch and hold an app in the favorites row or another prominent position.
  3. Drag it away from the favorites area or to the remove option that appears. This removes the shortcut from the home screen; it does not uninstall the app.
  4. Repeat for apps you rarely open while reading.

Google documents the touch-and-hold-and-drag method in its Android Home screen help. The exact remove target and animation depend on the launcher.

Choose a deliberately small first-screen set

A practical starting set is reading, a browser, notes, and one communication app. That is a recommendation for a manageable layout, not a Google requirement or a tested universal number. Move everything else to a later home-screen page or leave it in the app drawer. If you need a rarely used app, search for it rather than giving it permanent visual priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the reading app in a consistent location. Muscle memory matters: when the same icon is always in the same corner, opening a book becomes a single action instead of a search through pages of shortcuts.

Review Home settings

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen.
  2. Open Home settings, or the launcher option with a similar name.
  3. Inspect the available controls for app suggestions, notification dots, page layout, search, and other home-screen elements.
  4. Turn off elements that encourage browsing if your launcher provides those switches, then return to the home screen to check the result.

Not every launcher exposes the same controls. If you cannot find a particular switch, do not assume it is hidden in a universal Android menu; search the launcher’s own settings or the tablet manufacturer’s help.

Keep secondary apps available without keeping them visible

Use the app drawer for utilities you need occasionally. If your launcher supports folders, group infrequent tools into a single folder on a secondary page rather than scattering them across the first page. This preserves access while making the default view easier to scan.

Widgets deserve the same test as app icons. A weather, news, shopping, or social widget may be useful elsewhere but can turn the reading start screen into a stream of prompts. Remove it temporarily; if you miss it, add it back on another page.

Use a quiet visual baseline

A plain wallpaper and a restrained number of pages make the remaining icons less prominent. This is an aesthetic choice, not a display-performance claim. The purpose is to make the home screen a launch point for reading rather than a dashboard that demands attention.

2. Silence interruptions separately from icon clutter

Hiding an app icon does not stop its alerts. A tablet can look tidy and still interrupt a chapter with banners, sounds, or vibration. Treat appearance and interruptions as two separate jobs.

Set up Digital Wellbeing Focus mode

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Digital Wellbeing & parental controls, then open Focus mode (the wording can vary).
  3. Select the apps that most often pull you away from reading, such as social, video, shopping, or games.
  4. Start Focus mode before opening your book.
  5. When Focus mode is active, the selected apps cannot be used and their notifications are withheld.

Google describes these controls in its Digital Wellbeing documentation. Device support determines which options appear, so a tablet may offer fewer controls than the instructions show.

Schedule a reading window when the tablet supports it

Some devices let you schedule Focus mode for particular days and times. A schedule can make reading a default part of an evening without relying on willpower. Open the schedule control inside Focus mode, choose the days and start and end times, and save it. If your tablet has no schedule option, use the manual start button and add it to your routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some versions also provide a temporary break or “take a break” control. Use it when you genuinely need a paused app, then let Focus mode resume. The presence and duration choices are device-dependent; do not expect every tablet to show the same break menu.

Use bedtime-oriented display controls carefully

Digital Wellbeing’s bedtime area may include grayscale, dark theme, dim wallpaper, and scheduled display changes. These can reduce color and brightness cues in a dark room, but they remain software changes to a conventional tablet display. They do not reproduce e-ink’s reflective appearance or eliminate the light emitted by an LCD or OLED panel.

If your tablet offers these controls, open Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls, inspect the bedtime options, and enable only the changes that help you. A reader who dislikes grayscale can leave it off while keeping a dark theme or dimmed wallpaper. The aim is comfort and fewer prompts, not a claim that one setting is universally better.

Decide how notifications should behave outside Focus mode

Focus mode is useful for a defined reading session. Outside it, review notification permissions for high-volume apps in Settings > Notifications if that menu is available on your tablet. Disable alerts that are not time-sensitive, while keeping genuinely important communication channels available. This prevents every reading session from becoming a permanent communication blackout.

3. Tune the Kindle Android app for a quieter page

After the home screen and interruptions are under control, adjust the reading surface itself. Open a book in the Kindle app and tap the screen to reveal the reading toolbar. Select the Aa text and layout controls. Labels and placement can change between app versions, but the controls documented by Amazon include the following:

Control What it changes How to use it for a calmer session
Brightness Adjusts the app’s reading brightness control. Set a level that is readable without making the page the brightest object in the room.
Page color Changes the page background color. Try a warm or subdued color if a bright white page feels visually busy.
Dark mode Uses a dark reading presentation. Use it in a dim environment if light text on a dark background is comfortable for you.
Continuous scrolling Turns page turns into a vertically scrolling reading view. Choose it if a steady scroll feels less interruptive than tapping for every page.
Margins Controls the empty space at the sides of the text. Increase margins to narrow the text block, or reduce them to fit more words per line.
Text alignment Changes how lines are aligned within the text block. Compare alignment choices and keep the one that makes tracking lines easiest.
Themes Saves a combination of reading appearance settings. Create one dependable “reading” setup instead of rebuilding the layout each time.
Orientation lock Locks the reading orientation on devices that provide the option. Use it if accidental rotation breaks concentration; availability varies by device.

Amazon’s accessible reading options for Kindle reading apps describe these categories. The app may show additional typography controls depending on the book, device, or release, so do not assume every title exposes an identical menu.

Save one or two themes instead of endlessly tweaking

Make a baseline theme for normal daytime reading and, if useful, a second one for a dim room. Give each a clear purpose. Constantly changing fonts, colors, and spacing can become another form of distraction; a saved theme turns the setup into a decision you make once.

Check the page after changing one control at a time. A narrower margin may make lines longer but can also make it harder to find the next line. Continuous scrolling may feel smooth for some readers and disorienting for others. Keep the setting that supports sustained attention, not the one that merely looks most like a screenshot.

Try the Reading Ruler for line-by-line focus

Kindle’s Reading Ruler places a colored guide over the text to help keep your eyes on the current line. Amazon’s instructions put the control in the Aa menu’s More tab. On Android and Fire tablets, enabling it prompts you to turn on continuous scrolling. Follow the prompt if you want the ruler to remain aligned with a continuously moving text view.

  1. Open a book and tap the page to show the toolbar.
  2. Tap Aa, then open More.
  3. Choose Reading Ruler and enable it.
  4. Accept the continuous-scrolling prompt if it appears.
  5. Read a few pages and adjust or disable the ruler if the colored guide becomes more noticeable than helpful.

See Amazon’s Reading Ruler instructions for the documented Android and Fire tablet behavior.

4. Do not count on Google Reading mode on a tablet

Google Reading mode can change contrast, colors, font size, typeface, boldness, and line spacing, and it can read supported pages aloud. It is tempting to treat it as a general tablet reading layer, but Google’s current support page lists Reading mode as available only on Android phones.

For that reason, do not promise a tablet owner that Reading mode will appear in Settings or the accessibility controls. Check the current device’s Play Store availability and Google’s support information before troubleshooting a missing option. Even on supported phones, Google says Reading mode does not cover PDFs, email, chats, or social-media feeds, so it is not a universal document reader.

The relevant reference is Google’s “Use Reading mode” help page. Its phone-only qualification is especially important when adapting phone instructions to a larger screen.

5. Build a repeatable “open and read” routine

Settings work best when they are attached to a short sequence. A simple routine avoids hunting through menus once you are ready to read.

  1. Return to the simplified first home screen.
  2. Start Focus mode, manually or through its schedule.
  3. Open the Kindle app from the fixed reading shortcut.
  4. Confirm the saved theme, page color, brightness, and orientation.
  5. Enable the Reading Ruler only when line tracking is the problem it solves.
  6. Read for the planned interval, then end Focus mode if you need normal notifications again.

Keep the reading shortcut visible even if every other entertainment app is hidden. The goal is a low-friction path to a book, not a tablet that is difficult to use for legitimate tasks.

Use physical habits to reinforce the software setup

Place the tablet where you normally read, keep its charging routine predictable, and avoid leaving a browser tab or video app open behind the book. These are behavioral choices rather than Android features, but they reduce the number of decisions that compete with the first page.

6. Troubleshoot by the symptom you see

“My home screen still looks crowded.”

  • Check every home-screen page, not only the first one.
  • Remove duplicate shortcuts; uninstalling is unnecessary if you still need the app occasionally.
  • Inspect widgets and app suggestions in Home settings.
  • Move non-reading tools into the app drawer or a secondary page.
  • If the launcher does not expose the expected option, search for the manufacturer’s equivalent rather than following a phone-specific path blindly.

“I removed icons, but alerts still interrupt me.”

  • Start Focus mode and verify that the distracting apps are selected.
  • Remember that hiding a shortcut does not pause an app.
  • Check whether the app is sending alerts through a different account or service that was not selected in Focus mode.
  • If your tablet has no scheduling control, start Focus mode manually before reading.

“Focus mode is missing or has fewer controls.”

Digital Wellbeing availability and scheduling depend on the device. Confirm that you are looking under Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls, then accept that your tablet may not expose every feature in Google’s documentation. You can still use the home-screen cleanup and Kindle controls independently.

“The Kindle controls are not where the instructions say.”

Open a book, tap the page, and look for the reading toolbar and Aa button. Controls can move as the app changes, and an individual book may expose fewer options. Update the app through the tablet’s normal app-management screen if an update is offered, then check the toolbar again. Do not assume a missing orientation lock or theme control means the tablet is malfunctioning; some options are device- or version-dependent.

“Dark mode or grayscale feels worse.”

Turn off the setting that causes discomfort. Dark mode and grayscale are optional presentation changes, not requirements for a Kindle-like routine. Try a softer page color, a lower brightness, or a different theme inside Kindle instead. If eye strain persists, take breaks and adjust the room lighting rather than continually adding filters.

“Reading Ruler makes the page busier.”

Disable it from the Kindle Aa > More area. It is a line-tracking aid, not a universal improvement. If it triggered continuous scrolling and you prefer pages, change the scrolling setting after turning the ruler off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Why tablet instructions differ from phone instructions

Large-screen Android has received system-layout work that is not identical to phone Android. Google’s March 7, 2022 announcement about Android 12L described changes for larger-screen layouts, including home-screen behavior and a taskbar that supports split-screen workflows. That announcement is useful background for understanding why a tablet may present different controls; it is not proof that a particular tablet runs Android 12L or later.

Use the menus your tablet actually displays. Android version, manufacturer software, launcher, screen size, and app release can all affect the path. A guide that promises one universal sequence such as “tap this exact icon on every tablet” is likely to fail on some models.

Google’s background announcement is available at “12L: A new look for Android’s larger screens”, published March 7, 2022.

8. Choose the least complicated route that solves your problem

Route Effort What it changes Where it applies Important limitation
Keep the existing launcher and remove shortcuts Low Reduces icons and visual choices. Home screen. Does not silence notifications.
Use Digital Wellbeing Focus mode Low to moderate Pauses selected apps and withholds their notifications. System-wide while active. Scheduling and breaks depend on device support.
Configure Kindle themes and layout Low Changes brightness, page color, dark mode, scrolling, margins, alignment, and saved themes. Inside the Kindle app. Labels and available controls can vary by app version, book, and device.
Enable Reading Ruler Low Adds a colored line guide to the reading view. Inside Kindle on supported Android and Fire tablets. It can prompt continuous scrolling and may not suit every reader.
Use Google Reading mode Not a dependable tablet route Can adjust supported web-page appearance and read aloud. Google currently documents it as phone-only. Do not assume tablet availability; it also excludes several content types.

For most tablet owners, the first three routes are enough. They require no new hardware and address different causes of distraction: the launcher handles what you see, Focus mode handles interruptions, and Kindle handles the page itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. A maintenance checklist for a calm tablet

Review the setup occasionally, especially after installing several new apps or changing launchers.

  • Remove new apps from the first screen unless you use them as part of reading.
  • Check whether a new notification source belongs in your Focus mode list.
  • Open a Kindle book and verify that the saved theme still suits the current lighting.
  • Keep only the number of home-screen pages you can navigate without searching.
  • Revisit bedtime options after a system update because labels and availability can change.
  • Do not add a new filter, launcher, or accessibility feature merely because it sounds more e-reader-like; keep the controls that measurably reduce friction for you.

The practical result

A Kindle-like Android tablet is primarily a disciplined interface: one uncluttered launch point, a deliberate interruption block, and a reading app configured once for comfortable pages. Start with the built-in launcher and Digital Wellbeing tools, then use Kindle’s Aa controls and optional Reading Ruler. Keep expectations precise: these settings can make your tablet less distracting and easier to read, but they cannot turn a conventional LCD or OLED display into Kindle e-ink, and Google Reading mode should not be treated as a tablet feature while Google documents it for phones only.
