To keep retro gaming footage live on YouTube around the clock, prepare a recording and loop it through a continuous-stream setup. You can run an encoder and video source on a computer, or use a cloud service that plays uploaded videos. For actual console gameplay, first capture the console into a computer with compatible hardware; a capture card alone does not provide permission to broadcast the game or its music.
Choose what you want to keep live
There are two different setups that are easy to confuse:

- A loop of prerecorded gameplay: You play and record the game, then repeatedly broadcast the prepared video. This is the practical route for an unattended, continuous stream.
- A live console feed: You capture the console while someone is playing. The console, capture chain and encoder must remain running, so it is not an unattended replay of a recording.
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists continuous-stream software, including Gyre, as an option for streaming prerecorded videos. Automation makes a loop technically possible; it does not grant rights to the game footage, soundtrack or other material in the recording.

How to capture footage from your game console
For console footage, route the console’s video output through a capture device and add the device in OBS as a Video Capture Source. The compatible device depends on the console, computer and operating system. Check those requirements before buying; macOS and Linux users should prefer a device that supports UVC for operating-system compatibility.

- Check the console’s output options. Confirm that it can connect through the capture-device path you plan to use. For example, OBS says Nintendo Switch systems work with capture devices while docked; the Switch Lite cannot be docked and is not compatible with that capture-device path.
- Connect the capture device. Follow its connection instructions for the console and computer. If you need to play on a separate display while capturing, check whether the device and setup support the passthrough arrangement you need.
- Add the device in OBS. In the scene you intend to stream, add a Video Capture Source and select the connected device. Confirm that OBS receives the console’s picture and sound before you start a broadcast.
- Record the footage you intend to loop. Make a clean recording that you have reviewed for picture, sound and any material you do not have permission to use. Save the finished video where your chosen loop setup can access it.
OBS also describes capturing supported console remote-play apps in a computer window as an alternative. Whether that works depends on the console and computer; it is not a universal substitute for a capture device.
How to loop a video as a YouTube live stream with OBS
This local-computer approach puts the recording and encoder in your hands. The computer, OBS, the video file and the internet connection all need to keep working for the stream to continue. You are also responsible for restarting the setup if it stops.

- Prepare a finished video. Use the recording you want viewers to see repeatedly. Check its audio and ending so that the transition back to the beginning is acceptable. Keep the file accessible to the computer running OBS.
- Set up the video source. In OBS, add the video as a Media Source and enable its loop option. Preview it to confirm that it plays and returns to the beginning. If you are broadcasting gameplay live rather than replaying a recording, add the console capture device as a Video Capture Source instead; that is a different, live-input setup.
- Set the stream output. In OBS, configure the encoder using the server URL and stream key supplied for your YouTube stream. Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and encoder to values appropriate for your source, computer and connection, using YouTube’s current encoder guidance. There is no single bitrate or output setting that is right for every resolution and network.
- Send the stream to YouTube. Start streaming in OBS. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or reuse a stream to get its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow may also require you to press Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears.
- Watch the preview and loop. Verify that the intended video and audio reach the YouTube preview and that the video starts again when it ends. Keep an eye on the broadcast after launch; a local setup does not provide automatic recovery simply because its source is a looping file.
- End the broadcast deliberately. End the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder as applicable. Plan for the archive separately: YouTube’s cited encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so do not assume an indefinitely running broadcast will produce one complete automatic archive.
Connect OBS to YouTube without exposing your stream key
The stream key authorizes an encoder to send video to your YouTube stream. Copy the server URL and key from the selected stream in Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream settings. Keep the key private: someone else with access to it could send content to that stream. If you think it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.

First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help. Enable it and check that the channel can go live well before the planned launch, rather than waiting until the stream is ready.

Check YouTube eligibility and game-content rights before launch
Technical access to a capture device or an encoder is not a broadcast license. Review the rules for the specific game, publisher, music and other material in your recording before streaming it.
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified, must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16. These are YouTube requirements that can change, so check the current rules for your channel before launch.
- Review the game publisher’s guidance. Nintendo’s guidance covers livestreams and encourages creative input and commentary; it says simply copying or livestreaming gameplay without the creator’s own creative or editorial input is outside its guidelines, subject to the stated exception for footage shared through Nintendo system features. Nintendo also says you must obtain permissions for third-party intellectual property.
- Apply SEGA’s rules only to SEGA content. SEGA’s general guidance applies to individual users’ gameplay videos made using legitimate copies of SEGA products. It calls for new elements such as commentary or narration, requires appropriate permissions for third-party material including music, and limits profit-driven use to its stated platform-partner exception. Product-specific rules take priority when they conflict with its general guidance. These terms are not a license for other publishers’ games.
- Account for YouTube’s live scanning. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate it when third-party content is identified. Even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. An archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after it ends.
Do not assume that a game being old, footage being prerecorded, or a loop being automated makes the stream safe to broadcast. Check the rules that apply to the actual game and audio you plan to use.

Common problems and fixes
- You cannot start a live stream. Check channel verification and current eligibility, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-stream enablement. If the channel has a live-streaming restriction, resolve that before scheduling a launch.
- YouTube shows no preview. Confirm that OBS is sending to the selected stream’s server URL and stream key, then check that the encoder is actually streaming and the correct source is visible in OBS. If you changed streams, make sure the encoder is using that stream’s details.
- The preview appears, but the broadcast is not public. Check the scheduled-stream workflow in Live Control Room; depending on the setup, you may need to press Go live after the preview appears.
- The capture device has no picture. Check its compatibility with the console, computer and operating system, then confirm that OBS has the intended Video Capture Source selected. For a Switch capture-device setup, the console must be docked; Switch Lite is not compatible with this path.
- The loop stops at the end of the file. Check that the OBS Media Source’s loop option is enabled and that the preview reaches the end of the file. For a cloud loop, confirm that the uploaded video or playlist is the one assigned to the stream.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder. YouTube may be matching third-party content. Review the game and audio rights, and if you have a license, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist.
- The archive is incomplete or missing a long section. YouTube’s cited automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. Keep your own recording or arrange another archive plan for longer broadcasts instead of relying on one complete automatic archive.
Plan for the stream’s runtime and cost
A local OBS loop avoids a cloud-streaming subscription, but it depends on a powered computer, a working source file and a continuing internet connection. You handle monitoring and recovery. A cloud loop moves playback off the home computer; compare its price and included storage with how long you intend to run the stream and how much footage you need to keep available. YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior is limited to streams under 12 hours, so account for archive needs separately.
