Plan captions in two stages: provide captions during the live broadcast where your setup and YouTube account support them, then check and correct captions on each replay. YouTube says live automatic captions do not stay on the replay; it generates a separate set of captions for the video after the stream ends, and those captions may differ.

Choose how to caption the live broadcast

YouTube documents two routes for live captions: automatic captions for eligible streams, and professional captions sent through a supported production workflow. Either route concerns the live viewing experience; neither removes the need to check captions on the replay afterward.

Method What to know Best fit
YouTube automatic live captions YouTube’s current guidance describes these as English-only, available to eligible English channels in a gradual rollout, and limited to normal-latency streams. You must enable them for each stream. They do not remain on the replay. YouTube Help: Use automatic captioning A supported English-language stream when automatic live captions are available and professional captioning is not being used.
Professional live captions YouTube documents captions embedded in the video using 608/708, or captions delivered over HTTP through supported software. Embedded 608/708 captioning currently supports one caption track, according to YouTube. Setup depends on compatible production equipment and caption software. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements When automatic captions are unavailable, or the production needs a professional caption feed and can support the required setup.

Set up captions before going live

For YouTube automatic live captions

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the scheduled live stream and go to its live stream settings.
  2. Check whether the stream is eligible for automatic captions. YouTube’s current guidance limits the feature to English, eligible English channels, and normal latency; availability is being rolled out and may change.
  3. In the individual stream’s settings, enable Closed captions and select Automatic captions. This is a per-stream setting, not a channel-wide switch.
  4. During the broadcast, check the viewing experience where practical. Automatic recognition can miss or misrepresent speech, particularly with mispronunciations, accents, dialects, or background noise.

For professional live captions

  1. Decide whether captions will be embedded in the outgoing video using 608/708 or sent through supported software over HTTP.
  2. Confirm that the encoder, caption provider, and software support the chosen workflow together. YouTube’s documented options are not interchangeable in every production setup.
  3. Configure the encoder or caption software to send captions to YouTube, then verify the live output before relying on it for an episode.

YouTube’s live-caption guidance lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net among supported options. This is not an endorsement; check current product versions and compatibility with the provider before choosing one. YouTube’s starting point is that captions must be sent to the service: Live caption requirements.

Protect the episode recording

Captions on the replay are only useful if the replay is captured. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

  • Keep episode boundaries clear in titles and descriptions so viewers can identify the relevant replay and its captions.

Add and review captions on each replay

  1. After the live stream ends, open the replay in YouTube Studio and check its subtitles or captions. Do not assume that the live captions became the episode captions: YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the video.
  2. Allow for YouTube’s separate VOD caption process, then inspect the generated caption track. The replay captions may differ from what viewers saw live.
  3. Correct names, technical terms, speaker changes, punctuation, and any passages where meaning has been misrecognized. YouTube encourages creators to review and edit automatic output.
  4. If you have a prepared transcript, YouTube’s caption workflow also supports typing or pasting transcript text and setting timings automatically. Review the resulting timing and text before treating the track as finished. YouTube Help: Add subtitles & captions
  5. For episodes where accuracy is especially important, arrange professional caption preparation or review rather than relying on uncorrected speech recognition.

Improve the audio that captions depend on

Clear speech and less background noise can help speech recognition, but no microphone guarantees accurate captions. YouTube identifies poor sound quality and unrecognized speech as possible reasons automatic captions may be missing; hardware does not create captions or replace proofreading. Give speakers consistent microphone distance, reduce room and music noise where possible, and listen to a test recording before a long broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

For the continuous broadcast itself, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos or a playlist. It loops those videos in the cloud; it does not go live from a camera. Captions remain a separate YouTube workflow: use an eligible live-caption method for the broadcast and review the replay’s captions in YouTube Studio.

Troubleshoot common caption and archive problems

Problem Likely reason What to do
Automatic captions are not available in the live setup The feature is limited by language, channel eligibility, rollout, latency, and per-stream activation. Check YouTube’s current eligibility guidance and the stream’s Closed captions setting. If the option is unavailable or the workflow does not meet the show’s needs, investigate a supported professional caption setup.
Live captions are missing words or display incorrect text Recognition can be affected by accents, dialects, mispronunciations, and background noise. Improve speech clarity where possible, use professional live captions if appropriate, and review the episode captions after the broadcast.
The replay has no captions, or its captions differ from the live stream Live automatic captions do not persist; YouTube generates new captions for the VOD, and they may differ. Check the replay’s subtitle track in Studio, allow for the VOD caption process, and edit the generated captions or add a transcript.
A long continuous stream has no replay YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a local recording backup and consider shorter broadcast or episode units if they fit the show’s format.
Embedded captions do not appear as expected The encoder, caption feed, or production software may not be configured for the chosen supported workflow. Verify the complete signal path with the equipment and caption provider; YouTube currently documents one embedded 608/708 caption track.
