You can run an always-on YouTube Live stream from a product demo playlist by sending the playlist through an encoder on a Mac mini to YouTube’s live ingest. OBS Studio is one software-encoder option, but a local setup is only as dependable as its playlist behavior, network, power, and recovery plan. This guide explains the setup decisions and checks without assuming a particular Mac mini can run unattended reliably.
How the stream works
The signal path is: product demo files or playlist → encoder output on the Mac mini → YouTube Live ingestion → your broadcast and watch page. YouTube describes an encoder as software or standalone hardware that converts video into a streamable format. The Mac mini hosts the encoder; it does not itself create a continuous broadcast without an encoder and a configured YouTube broadcast.

YouTube’s official setup uses a server URL and stream key in the encoder. Prefer the secure RTMPS endpoint supplied for your stream. RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through SSL; Google documents port 443 and hostname authentication requirements for valid endpoints at YouTube RTMPS ingestion.

Before you set it up
Confirm YouTube Live eligibility
Verify the channel and check that it has had no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before a planned launch rather than waiting until the day of the stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.

Prepare the demo playlist and rights
Use demo recordings you have the right to broadcast, including any music, third-party footage, software screens, logos, or customer material they contain. A continuous live stream is still subject to YouTube’s copyright and other platform rules. Make sure the playlist has a deliberate order and a clear ending or loop behavior in the encoder; the cited platform guidance does not establish a specific OBS playlist-loop method.
Choose the intended broadcast behavior
Decide whether the YouTube broadcast should remain available if the encoder stops briefly, or end when the encoder stops. That choice matters for unattended recovery: an encoder reconnect and a broadcast that has already ended are not the same thing.

Set up the Mac mini and OBS workflow
- Prepare the host. Choose and validate a Mac mini configuration against your own target resolution, frame rate, media format, and expected run length. The available Apple product information establishes the Mac mini product family, not a configuration benchmark for this job. Before relying on it, test sustained encoding and the playlist on the actual machine and macOS version you plan to use.
- Install and configure an encoder. OBS Studio is a candidate software encoder for macOS. Add the product demo media as sources and arrange the intended output. Confirm in a test that each file plays, that transitions behave as expected, and that the playlist repeats or ends according to your design. Do not assume an exact menu path or loop control from an older guide applies to your installed OBS version.
- Create or select the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or choose the broadcast you intend viewers to watch. In the encoder configuration, enter the server URL and stream key YouTube provides. Copy the secure RTMPS destination where available, and keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Start the encoder and verify both sides. Starting the encoder sends data; it does not by itself prove that viewers can see a live broadcast. Check the encoder connection status and YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and broadcast status. Confirm the correct playlist is playing and check the public watch page before treating the stream as live.
- Test interruptions before leaving it unattended. In a controlled test, stop and restart the encoder and observe whether YouTube resumes the intended broadcast or requires another action. Record the OBS version, macOS version, Mac mini configuration, media playlist behavior, and the result of a longer run. A short successful test does not establish long-term reliability.
Configure starts, stops, and recovery deliberately
The OBS Project guide describes scheduled-broadcast controls: auto-start can put a scheduled broadcast live when encoder data begins, while auto-stop ends the broadcast when the encoder stops. Auto-stop therefore affects whether a reconnect can resume the same broadcast. The detailed guide was last updated October 8, 2021; treat it as background, not a guarantee that today’s OBS or YouTube controls have the same labels or behavior. Check the controls in your current versions before depending on them: OBS Project’s YouTube streaming guide.
YouTube’s API documentation describes reusing a stream configuration across scheduled broadcasts and keeping a 24/7 broadcast active while a separate broadcast is live. That establishes a platform capability, not an automatic playlist loop or a promise that a Mac, OBS, or internet connection will recover from every interruption. See YouTube Live broadcast documentation.

Mac mini, cloud service, or standalone encoder?
The right option depends on whether you want to operate a local computer, move the stream workload to a cloud service, or use dedicated hardware. The available platform directory identifies these categories but does not establish a performance ranking or comparable costs.
| Approach | Computer at home | Playlist and scheduling | Recovery and effort | Cost evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mac mini with an encoder | Yes; the host and its connection must remain available for the local workflow. | Depends on the encoder configuration and testing; no specific loop method is established here. | You operate and monitor the host, encoder, network, and broadcast. Test interruption behavior. | No comparable cost is established. |
| StreamNeo cloud service | No computer needs to stay on at home for the service to loop uploaded videos to YouTube. | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live; 24/7 looping and playlists are included. | Runs in the cloud and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. | See the plan options below. |
| Standalone encoder such as AJA HELO Plus | YouTube describes this category as able to schedule prerecorded media without a computer. | Scheduling prerecorded media is identified; detailed playlist controls are not established here. | It avoids a general-purpose computer, but comparative recovery behavior and operating effort are not established. | No comparable cost is established. |
YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded video and AJA HELO Plus as hardware that can schedule prerecorded media without a computer. The listing is not a comparative reliability test; check current vendor information before choosing either. See YouTube’s encoder options.

Troubleshooting the local setup
- YouTube does not show incoming video: Check that live streaming is enabled, the correct broadcast is selected, and the encoder has the matching server URL and stream key. Confirm that the encoder is actually sending data.
- The encoder connects, but viewers do not see a live broadcast: Check the Live Control Room preview and broadcast state. Encoder data arriving is not the same as the broadcast being live to viewers; verify the current start controls for your OBS and YouTube versions.
- A brief interruption ends the broadcast: Review whether auto-stop is enabled for the scheduled broadcast. Its behavior can end the broadcast when encoder data stops, so test the reconnect path and current YouTube controls before relying on unattended recovery.
- The demo playlist does not repeat as expected: Test the media sequence within the OBS version you will run. Confirm how the final item behaves and whether the playlist returns to the first item; an exact looping procedure is not established here.
- The stream works initially but is not dependable unattended: Check the actual Mac mini, macOS, encoder, network, and power setup over a longer run. No specific Mac mini configuration or recovery procedure is established as reliable without testing.
Tools for planning the stream

- Cloud vs PC cost calculator — compare the costs of a cloud approach and keeping a local computer running.
- Copyright safety checklist — review rights considerations before broadcasting prerecorded material.
