Make the model expose a short, testable calculation—not private chain-of-thought. Ask it to restate the problem, define every symbol and unit, list ambiguities and assumptions, show one equation or operation per line, retain intermediate values, verify the result by substitution, and recompute it independently. Then check the work yourself.
This method catches interpretation mistakes, unit mismatches, invalid algebra, and arithmetic slips while keeping the answer reproducible. It also separates a computed result from the assumptions and uncertainty behind it.

Why a polished AI calculation can still be wrong
Language models are good at producing plausible-looking mathematics, but plausibility is not verification. They can select the wrong meaning of a word, silently convert or ignore a unit, apply a percentage to the wrong base, lose a sign, or use an algebraic step that is valid only under an unstated restriction.
OpenAI’s GSM8K work used 8,500 grade-school word problems, with solutions requiring between two and eight steps. In that evaluation, the reported system score was 55%, compared with 60% for sampled 9–12-year-old children. The same work generated 100 candidate solutions and used verifiers to rank them. That is evidence of substantial progress, not a guarantee for an individual answer.

OpenAI’s process-supervision research found benefits from rewarding each correct reasoning step rather than only the final answer. For a reader, the practical implication is simple: request inspectable equations, substitutions, and checks instead of a confident-looking number.
Do not ask for hidden chain-of-thought. OpenAI’s reasoning guidance notes that prompts such as “think step by step” may not improve performance and can sometimes hinder it. Ask for the concise verification trace needed to audit the result. OpenAI summarizes the goal this way: “To match human performance in complex logical domains, our models must learn to recognize their mistakes and to choose their steps carefully.”
A prompt that reliably exposes the work
Paste the following template before your problem, then replace the final line with the actual question:
Restate the problem in your own words before calculating.
1. List the known values, unknowns, units, and the quantity to find.
2. Identify ambiguous wording, date formats, unit conventions, variable defaults, rounding rules, and domain restrictions.
3. State each assumption you choose and explain how a different choice would change the result.
4. Set up the equations.
5. Derive the result with one algebraic transformation or arithmetic operation per line. Label every substitution and retain intermediate values.
6. Check the result by substituting it into the original equation or condition.
7. Recompute it with an independent method, such as a calculator, spreadsheet, code, or symbolic tool.
8. Report the final answer with units, appropriate rounding, and a separate statement of confidence and remaining uncertainty.
Problem: [write the problem here]
The request for assumptions comes before the calculation. That ordering prevents the model from quietly choosing a convention and presenting it as a fact. The independent-method instruction is equally important: repeating the same reasoning in different words is not an independent check.
What a verifiable answer should contain
Interpretation
The first section should restate what is being asked and distinguish known values from unknowns. For example, “Find the final price after a 15% discount and 8% sales tax” is more precise than “apply 23%.” The order of operations and the base for each percentage are part of the interpretation.
Definitions and units
Every symbol should have one meaning. State whether a rate is per hour, per day, or per transaction; whether a distance is in miles or kilometres; and whether a percentage is represented as 0.15 or 15. Keep units attached to intermediate values so an accidental mismatch is visible.
Assumptions and restrictions
List choices that are not forced by the wording: inclusive versus exclusive dates, simple versus compound interest, a particular tax jurisdiction, a default variable value, a rounding policy, or the permitted domain of a square root or denominator. Wolfram|Alpha’s documentation describes assumptions about ambiguous words, unit abbreviations, variable defaults, and whether a date is being interpreted as a calendar date or a computation; its API can expose or alter those assumptions. The same discipline is useful with any AI system.

Derivation and intermediate values
Use one transformation per line and label substitutions. A reader should be able to point to the first incorrect line without reconstructing a paragraph of prose. Preserve extra precision until the final rounding step unless the problem explicitly requires rounding at each stage.
Checks and confidence
A check should test the original condition, not merely repeat the final line. Report what was verified, which assumptions were selected, and what remains uncertain. The Model Spec guidance is to use a tool, hedge appropriately, or explain that a confident answer is not possible when confidence is insufficient.
Worked example: detecting a percentage mistake
Suppose an item costs $240, receives a 15% discount, and then an 8% sales tax is applied to the discounted price. A plausible but wrong response might add 15% and 8%, treat the combined change as 23%, and report $184.80. That treats a tax as a reduction and applies both percentages to the original price.
Restatement and assumptions
- Starting price: $240.
- Discount: 15% of the starting price.
- Tax: 8% of the price after the discount.
- Currency: dollars; tax is applied after the discount.
- Rounding: round to cents only at the end.
One operation per line
- Discount amount = $240 × 0.15 = $36.
- Discounted price = $240 − $36 = $204.
- Tax amount = $204 × 0.08 = $16.32.
- Final price = $204 + $16.32 = $220.32.
Verification
Use a multiplier check: $240 × 0.85 × 1.08 = $220.32. The result is higher than the discounted price and lower than the original price plus tax, which is directionally sensible. A spreadsheet or calculator should reproduce the same value. If the tax were applied before the discount, or if the store rounded each stage differently, the answer would change; those are separate assumptions that must be stated.
Worked algebra example: preserve domain restrictions
Consider the equation √(x + 1) = x − 1. Squaring both sides is a useful transformation, but it can introduce candidates that do not satisfy the original equation.
State the domain first
- The radicand requires
x + 1 ≥ 0. - The right side of a square root equation must be nonnegative, so
x − 1 ≥ 0. - Together, the relevant domain is
x ≥ 1.
Derive and filter
- Start with
√(x + 1) = x − 1. - Square both sides:
x + 1 = (x − 1)². - Expand:
x + 1 = x² − 2x + 1. - Move all terms to one side:
0 = x² − 3x. - Factor:
0 = x(x − 3). - Candidates:
x = 0orx = 3.
The domain rejects x = 0. Substitute the remaining candidate into the original equation: √(3 + 1) = 3 − 1, so 2 = 2. The solution is x = 3. An answer that lists both roots without the domain and substitution check is incomplete, even though its factoring is correct.
Worked word problem: units and dates can change the result
A tank fills at 2.5 gallons per minute for 18 minutes while a leak removes 0.4 litres per minute. The number “0.4” cannot be subtracted until both rates use the same unit.

Convert before combining rates
- Convert the leak rate: 0.4 litres per minute ÷ 3.785411784 litres per US gallon = approximately 0.1057 gallons per minute.
- Net rate = 2.5 − 0.1057 = approximately 2.3943 gallons per minute.
- Net volume added = 2.3943 × 18 = approximately 43.10 US gallons.
If someone treats 0.4 as gallons per minute, the result becomes (2.5 − 0.4) × 18 = 37.8 gallons. Both calculations are internally tidy; only one matches the stated units. A verifiable answer displays the conversion and identifies whether “gallon” means US or imperial gallon.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Date ambiguity causes the same kind of problem. “03/04/2026” can mean March 4 in a month/day convention or 3 April in a day/month convention. A calculation of days overdue, interest, age, or elapsed service time must ask for the locale or use an unambiguous ISO date such as 2026-04-03. If the choice cannot be resolved, show both cases rather than silently selecting one.
A repeatable verification workflow
- Copy the original question exactly. Preserve symbols, punctuation, units, and date formatting. Small wording changes can alter the mathematical task.
- Ask for a structured restatement. Require knowns, unknowns, target quantity, and units before any arithmetic.
- Resolve or expose ambiguity. Ask a clarifying question when a missing fact changes the answer materially. Otherwise list the alternatives and calculate each one.
- Inspect the setup. Check that the equation represents the words, that percentages use the correct base, and that units cancel or convert correctly.
- Read the derivation line by line. Look for sign changes, copied numbers, invalid cancellation, premature rounding, and operations that require a nonzero denominator or positive quantity.
- Substitute into the original problem. For an equation, insert the candidate into the unsimplified equation. For a word problem, test it against the stated totals, rates, or constraints.
- Use an independent method. Recalculate with a basic calculator, spreadsheet formula, short program, or symbolic mathematics system. Change the method, not just the wording of the prompt.
- Run sanity checks. Inspect units, sign, order of magnitude, bounds, and simple limiting cases. A percentage discount should not increase a positive price; a probability should lie between 0 and 1.
- Round once and report scope. State the precision, units, assumptions, and whether the result is exact, approximate, or conditional.
Choosing an independent checking tool
| Tool | Arithmetic reliability | Symbolic manipulation | Assumption visibility | Reproducibility and checking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic calculator | High for entered operations | Minimal | Low; it cannot infer what a word meant | Easy to repeat, but record the expression |
| Spreadsheet | High for cell formulas when references are inspected | Moderate | Moderate; units and assumptions must be labeled by the user | Strong when formulas and inputs are preserved |
| Code | High for deterministic formulas and tests | Moderate to high with suitable libraries | High if conversions, defaults, and assertions are written explicitly | Very strong; save the script, inputs, and version |
| Symbolic mathematics engine | High for supported exact operations | High | Can expose conditions and assumptions, but review its interpretation | Strong when the exact expression and assumptions are recorded |
| Second AI response | Variable | Variable | Variable | Useful as a critique, not as sole verification; independent tools are preferable |
A calculator can confirm that 204 × 1.08 equals 220.32, but it cannot tell whether tax should have been applied to 204. A symbolic engine can solve an equation, yet its result may depend on domain assumptions. Tool output verifies the expression you supplied; it does not automatically verify that the expression matches the real-world question.
How to make assumptions explicit
Units and conversions
Write the conversion factor beside the number and carry units through the operation. Distinguish mass from force, energy from power, and US customary units from imperial units. If a unit is missing, ask rather than infer it from a familiar-looking number.
Dates and calendars
Use ISO format for inputs, specify the time zone when times are involved, and state whether an interval is inclusive. “Thirty days after” and “by the end of” can produce different endpoints.

Rounding and precision
Say whether intermediate values remain unrounded and whether the final result is rounded to the nearest cent, tenth, significant figure, or integer. Do not present more precision than the measurements justify.
Variables and terminology
Define overloaded terms such as “average,” “rate,” “growth,” “per month,” and “net.” “Average speed” is total distance divided by total time, not necessarily the arithmetic mean of two speeds. Tell the model which definition applies when the context does not settle it.

Domain and boundary conditions
Record restrictions such as nonnegative lengths, probabilities between zero and one, positive denominators, and integer counts. Test boundary cases: zero quantity, equality at a limit, a maximum capacity, or a rate changing sign.

Verification checklist
- Did the answer restate the actual question?
- Are every known, unknown, symbol, and unit defined?
- Are ambiguous terms, dates, defaults, and rounding rules listed?
- Are assumptions stated before they are used?
- Does each line contain one transparent operation or algebraic transformation?
- Are intermediate values retained with units?
- Was the candidate substituted into the original equation or condition?
- Were signs, magnitude, bounds, and boundary cases checked?
- Was the calculation recomputed with a genuinely independent method?
- Does the final statement distinguish exact results, approximations, assumptions, and uncertainty?
When an AI answer is not sufficient
Do not rely on an unverified model calculation for safety-critical engineering, medical dosing, legal deadlines, financial transfers, tax filings, or any decision where a small error has serious consequences. Use the model to organize the problem and produce a checkable draft, then confirm it with an authoritative professional, documented formula, or validated software. OpenAI’s Model Spec guidance is appropriately conservative: when confidence is insufficient, the assistant should use a tool, qualify the answer, or say that it cannot answer confidently.
The goal is not to make an AI reveal private internal reasoning. It is to make the mathematical artifact auditable: clear interpretation, explicit assumptions, visible equations, independent checks, and an honest statement of what the result does and does not establish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I always ask an AI to “think step by step”?
No. Ask for a concise verification trace—definitions, assumptions, equations, substitutions, intermediate values, and checks. OpenAI notes that the generic “think step by step” instruction may not improve performance and can sometimes hinder it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat is the fastest check for a numerical answer?
Re-enter the displayed expression in a calculator, then check units, sign, order of magnitude, and the original condition. For important results, also use a spreadsheet, code, or symbolic tool.
Why can two correct-looking AI answers disagree?
They may have selected different interpretations of an ambiguous unit, date, percentage base, rounding rule, or variable default. Compare their assumptions and setups before comparing final numbers.
How should I handle an answer with several algebraic solutions?
List the domain restrictions, then substitute every candidate into the original unsimplified equation. Reject any candidate that violates a restriction or fails the original equation.
Can a calculator verify an AI word problem?
It verifies arithmetic for the expression you enter, not whether that expression models the words correctly. Check interpretation, units, and assumptions separately.
