You can set a device to reopen a YouTube stream page after a restart, but that does not guarantee the stream will begin playing with sound. Device startup, YouTube’s Autoplay setting, and browser audio-autoplay rules are separate. The exact startup steps depend on your device and operating system.
What “automatic playback” means
There are two different behaviors to configure: reopening YouTube when the device starts, and allowing video or audio to play without a new tap or click.
- Device or browser startup: opens the YouTube app or a saved stream URL after restart or sign-in.
- YouTube Autoplay: controls whether another related video plays after the current video ends. It does not launch YouTube after reboot.
- Browser audio policy: may block sound until someone interacts with the page, even when the page opens automatically.
YouTube says Autoplay settings can differ across devices, so check the setting on the device that will play the stream. See YouTube Help: Autoplay videos.
Set up the device to reopen the stream
Because the device and operating system are unspecified, there is no single reliable startup recipe for every computer, phone, TV, or kiosk. Use the device’s supported startup or kiosk controls to reopen the YouTube app or the browser page for the stream after restart or sign-in. On a desktop browser, look for its setting to open a specific page or pages at startup; the menu names and sign-in behavior vary by browser and version.

A Raspberry Pi community post from 2020 describes adding a YouTube address to Chromium’s “Open a specific page or set of pages” startup option. Treat it as an example, not current universal instructions: Raspberry Pi Forums: Get youtube to autoplay in Chromium.
- Save the URL of the radio stream you want to open. Confirm that the stream is still available and that the URL points to the intended broadcast.
- Configure the device or browser to open the YouTube app or saved page after startup or sign-in, using the controls supported by that device.
- On that same device, enable YouTube Autoplay if you want related videos to continue after the current video ends. This setting is separate from startup.
- Restart the device normally while signed in and connected to the network. Check separately whether YouTube opens, whether the live stream is available, and whether sound begins.
A live broadcast’s availability and restart behavior are not guaranteed by the cited platform guidance. A playlist of saved videos and a live radio stream are not interchangeable: a playlist can advance through a sequence, while a live stream depends on the broadcast remaining available.

If the page opens but there is no sound
Browsers can permit a page to load while refusing to start audible playback automatically. Chrome’s policy documentation says muted autoplay is allowed, while sound may depend on prior interaction with the site or, on desktop, the user’s media engagement. That engagement reflects an individual’s past media use, so behavior can differ between profiles and devices. If playback is rejected, Chromium’s guidance is to provide a Play control rather than assume autoplay worked.
- Click or tap Play once, then test another restart. A prior interaction may affect whether the browser permits sound later.
- Check the browser’s site playback or sound settings if the page continues to open silently.
- Test after browser or operating-system updates; startup and autoplay behavior can change with software or policy changes.
- For a dedicated kiosk, use the operating system and browser’s supported kiosk or startup management controls, and test the actual device. Do not assume a browser flag overrides YouTube or operating-system restrictions.
Chrome documents chrome.exe --autoplay-policy=no-user-gesture-required as a way for developers to test a site as though a user were strongly engaged. It is not a general consumer fix or a guarantee of unattended YouTube playback. Read Chrome’s autoplay policy documentation and the Chromium autoplay guidance.

When an embedded player is the destination
If you control a page containing an embedded YouTube player, the IFrame Player API’s autoplay=1 parameter requests initial playback after the player loads; the default is 0. This applies to that embedded player only. It does not configure the device to open a browser after reboot or override browser autoplay policy. YouTube also notes that enabling autoplay causes playback data collection and sharing when the page loads.
The embed API also supports playlist and loop parameters for embedded-player sequences. Those parameters are relevant to a playlist, not a way to guarantee that a live broadcast will resume after a reboot. See YouTube Embedded Players and Player Parameters.
