To make a YouTube radio livestream with a waveform visualizer, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, build a scene in OBS that combines your radio audio with a visualizer, then send that scene to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. Test representative audio and motion, check stream health, and confirm you have live-streaming rights to every track and visual.
What you need
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
- An encoder such as OBS, plus a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen video bitrate.
- A radio audio source, such as a prepared playlist or other audio feed, and a video scene. YouTube receives an audio-and-video stream, so even a radio broadcast needs a visual feed.
- Permission to use every recording, composition, and visual in a live broadcast.
Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. Use the Stream tab to set up an encoder stream, or open Manage to schedule one. Configure the title, visibility, and other broadcast details.
- In the stream setup, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen, publish it, or share it with anyone who should not control your broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and enter the stream key, or use the server URL and key if configuring a custom connection. Keep the key private.
- Build and check the OBS scene before starting. For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room, then select Go live. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain that starting the encoder creates the watch page for an encoder stream; scheduled streams require the Live Control Room step.
See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder for the current Studio flow.
Build a radio scene with an audio-reactive waveform
1. Add the radio audio
In OBS, add the source that carries your program audio and confirm it registers on the audio meter. Play representative material and listen to the stream output, not just the local source. Avoid letting desktop sounds, notifications, or other unintended audio enter the broadcast.
2. Add a video background
A static station card is the simplest video feed: use an image with your station name or program information. If you want continuous motion, add a looping video source. Ensure the visual fills the canvas without obscuring text or important elements.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Add the waveform
For a waveform that moves with the music, add an OBS Browser source and load an HTML audio visualizer. A technical guide from RadioTech Studio describes this approach. The visualizer must receive the same audio signal that OBS is broadcasting; a browser source or plugin may not automatically have access to a separate OBS audio source. Follow the visualizer’s own setup instructions and verify its audio input and animation in a private or unlisted test before relying on it live.
If you cannot route audio into the browser visualizer, use a static graphic or a pre-rendered animation until you have a working audio connection. A waveform that looks active but does not actually respond to the broadcast audio is not an audio-reactive visualizer.

Choose encoder settings and test the stream
YouTube detects the encoder’s output and transcodes it for viewers. Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate deliberately; the appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. In OBS, select a bitrate from YouTube’s current table rather than assuming a preset applies to every format.
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS for encoder streaming.
- Video codec: YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1. Use a codec supported by both your encoder and chosen workflow.
- Audio codec: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Rate control: Use CBR, as in YouTube’s recommendations.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Follow the resolution- and frame-rate-specific recommendation in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance. For example, its H.264 table recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them.
Make sure your available upload capacity can support the selected bitrate. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual program and checking stream health. Listen for clipping, silence, and unintended audio; watch for a frozen or missing visualizer, dropped frames, and warnings in Live Control Room. Run a test before the first public broadcast rather than discovering a routing or bandwidth issue on air.

Keep the radio stream running
Stream locally with OBS
Running OBS on your own computer gives you direct control over sources and scene design. It is appropriate when the computer can remain powered, connected, and supervised. If OBS or the computer stops, the encoder feed stops too; plan how you will notice and restart it.
Run a VPS and FFmpeg
A technically oriented alternative is to send a playlist and visual through FFmpeg on a virtual private server. RadioTech Studio describes a background-process approach with restart handling. This route requires command-line configuration and ongoing maintenance: test the media loop, audio/video synchronization, process restart, server capacity, and YouTube reconnection behavior. The cited guide does not establish a comparative uptime or cost advantage over other approaches.

Use hosted continuous playout
A hosted service can handle playlist playout and visuals remotely, reducing dependence on a home computer. Upstream describes this kind of cloud workflow, but its vendor guide is not an independent reliability or cost comparison. Check the service’s current features, operating terms, recovery behavior, and rights workflow before choosing it.
For a stream that ends normally, YouTube says broadcasts under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is not a promise that an interrupted or longer broadcast will be archived in the same way; see YouTube’s encoder-stream guidance for platform details.

Clear music and visual rights
Before broadcasting, verify that your permissions cover the actual use: a live YouTube stream, the recording and composition, your territory, and any resulting archive or replay. A music subscription does not necessarily grant every kind of live-broadcast permission. Upstream notes that live streams are scanned and recommends music that is owned or appropriately licensed, but a vendor’s guide cannot determine whether a particular catalog or license covers your channel and territories. Review the provider’s current terms and obtain any required permissions for both music and visuals.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that OBS is streaming, that the stream key and server details are correct, and that the key belongs to the intended broadcast. Keep the key private, and replace it in OBS if it has been exposed.
- Audio is missing: Confirm the intended source is active in OBS, its meter moves during playback, and it is included in the stream mix. Check that the visualizer has access to the broadcast audio if it is supposed to react to sound.
- The waveform is static: Check the Browser source’s audio-input setup and confirm it is receiving the program signal. Test with moving audio; if routing remains unreliable, use a static or pre-rendered visual instead.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and whether your upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution in line with YouTube’s current recommendations and run another representative test.
- The scheduled stream does not go public: Wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and use Go live for the scheduled broadcast.
- The stream stops when unattended: A local OBS setup depends on the computer and its connection staying available. Add supervision or restart handling, move the process to a maintained VPS, or use a hosted playout workflow.
- A track triggers a rights issue: Stop using it until you have verified that the relevant licenses permit the live broadcast and any archive. Replace it with material whose rights you can confirm.
