Start the playlist, then select Repeat until the icon shows whole-playlist repeat. If the icon contains a 1, YouTube Music is repeating only the current song or video. The whole-playlist state is the same control without the 1 indicator. Shuffle is optional and changes the order; Autoplay is a separate setting that controls what happens after the current queue ends.

The fastest way to loop a complete playlist

YouTube Music can repeat the entire playlist, but the Repeat control has two similar-looking states. Start playback from the playlist itself, then cycle Repeat until the icon no longer contains the number 1. That state loops the playlist. A Repeat icon with a 1 loops only the song or video currently playing.

Android phone or tablet

  1. Open the YouTube Music app and open the playlist you want to hear continuously.
  2. Start playback from that playlist. You can begin with the playlist’s play control or start one of its tracks.
  3. Open the current-player view so the playback controls are visible.
  4. Tap Repeat until the control indicates repeat for the playlist or album. YouTube Music Help describes the selected Android playlist-repeat control as turning white.
  5. Check the icon before leaving the player. If a 1 appears in the middle of the repeat symbol, tap it again; that setting repeats only the current song or video.

When the whole-playlist state is selected, YouTube Music returns to the beginning of the playlist after the last queued item instead of stopping at the end of that cycle.

Desktop web player

  1. Open YouTube Music in your computer browser and open the playlist.
  2. Start a track from that playlist.
  3. In the bottom player bar, locate the Repeat control. If the player is compact, expand the player or open the queue area until the playback controls are visible.
  4. Select Repeat until the icon represents the whole playlist rather than showing a 1.
  5. Let the current queue reach its last item to verify that playback returns to the first item.

The official desktop help describes the same distinction as the Android instructions: a 1 means repeat-one, while the repeat state without 1 repeats the playlist or album. Button placement and surrounding controls can vary with the browser and YouTube Music interface version, so identify the symbol by its state rather than by a fixed screen location.

What each playback control actually does

Continuous listening is easiest when Repeat, Shuffle and Autoplay are treated as separate decisions. They affect different parts of playback and should not be used interchangeably.

Control or state What it changes What it does not change
Repeat for the playlist or album (Repeat selected without a 1) Loops the current playlist after its final queued item. It does not randomize the order and does not add unrelated recommendations.
Repeat one (Repeat icon showing 1) Plays the current song or video again and again. It does not advance through the rest of the playlist.
Shuffle play or Shuffle Changes the order in which items from the playlist are played. It does not, by itself, make the playlist repeat.
Autoplay Concerns what happens after the current queue reaches its end, including whether additional music is played. It is not the control that loops the playlist itself.

For a predictable, repeating playlist, choose whole-playlist Repeat and leave Shuffle off. For a different order on every listening cycle, turn on Shuffle as well as whole-playlist Repeat. The two settings are independent: Shuffle changes order, while Repeat determines whether the set starts again.

How to repeat the playlist in a specific listening style

Repeat in the original order

Start the playlist, make sure Shuffle is not selected, and set Repeat to the state without 1. The queue proceeds in its existing order and starts again after the final item. This is the useful configuration for an album-like sequence, a lesson arranged in chapters, or any playlist where track order matters.

Repeat in a shuffled order

  1. Open the playlist on Android.
  2. Open the playlist menu and choose Shuffle play, or start a playlist track and tap Shuffle in the player.
  3. Set Repeat to whole-playlist repeat, checking that the repeat icon does not contain 1.

Shuffle is optional. Activating it changes the order but does not replace the Repeat setting, so a shuffled playlist can still stop at the end unless whole-playlist Repeat is selected.

Stop after one complete playlist

If you want the playlist to play once and then stop, do not select whole-playlist Repeat. A TeamYouTube community response dated August 5, 2020 advised turning Autoplay off when the desired result is stopping after a fixed-length playlist, because Autoplay can continue with more music. That response is older community guidance rather than a current official interface specification, so treat it as a troubleshooting clue if your player continues beyond the playlist and the current controls do not match that description.

Why a playlist may appear to stop early

A playlist can seem not to repeat when the actual problem is the queue that was created when playback started. The player follows the current queue, not merely the playlist page that is open in another view. If the queue contains only one song, a partial selection, or a different source, whole-playlist Repeat cannot add the missing items.

Inspect Up Next before changing settings

  1. Open the queue or Up Next panel while the playlist is playing.
  2. Check whether the expected playlist items are present, not just the currently playing track.
  3. If the queue is incomplete, stop playback and start the playlist again from its playlist page rather than resuming an old queue.
  4. After restarting, confirm that the Repeat icon is in the whole-playlist state and then watch the queue as the next items load.

The 2020 TeamYouTube support discussion about queues that did not play every playlist item recommended checking Up Next and ensuring that the playlist was fully represented there. Reports in that thread show that an incomplete queue was a real symptom for some users, but the discussion does not establish a universal fix for every current queue problem.

Troubleshooting branches

The same song repeats instead of the playlist

  • Look directly at the Repeat icon.
  • If it shows 1, tap or click Repeat to leave repeat-one.
  • Continue cycling until the playlist-repeat state appears without 1.
  • Confirm that the queue contains more than the current item.

Playback stops after the last listed song

  • Check that whole-playlist Repeat is selected; Shuffle alone will not create a loop.
  • Open Up Next and verify that all expected playlist items are loaded.
  • If the queue is partial or belongs to an earlier session, restart playback from the playlist page and set Repeat again.
  • If you intended to hear additional, non-playlist music rather than a loop, review Autoplay instead. Autoplay governs what follows the queue; it is not the playlist-loop control.

The player continues with music that is not in the playlist

  • Check whether the playlist has reached its end and Autoplay is active.
  • If you want a fixed-length session, use the dated TeamYouTube guidance to investigate Autoplay and turn it off if that option is available in your current interface.
  • Check Up Next for items that were added outside the playlist. Remove or clear those items, then restart the playlist and select whole-playlist Repeat.

Shuffle seems to have cancelled the repeat

Shuffle and Repeat are separate controls. Recheck both: Shuffle should be selected if you want a randomized order, and Repeat should be selected without 1 if you want that randomized set to cycle. Turning Shuffle on does not guarantee that Repeat remains in the desired state, so inspect the icon after changing either setting.

The controls are not where the instructions describe

YouTube Music can change the arrangement of controls between Android releases, desktop browsers and interface updates. The official Android and desktop help pages describe the same repeat-state distinction, but they do not guarantee identical button placement on every device. Expand the current-player view, look for the standard circular-arrow Repeat symbol, and identify the state by whether 1 is displayed.

Understanding the queue and playlist boundaries

A playlist is the saved collection; the queue is the set of items the player has prepared for the current listening session. Starting playback from a playlist normally creates a queue based on that playlist, but an old queue, a single-track start, or manually added items can change what the player will reach at the end.

Use the queue as the diagnostic source of truth. If every expected playlist item appears in Up Next and Repeat is set without 1, the player has the information needed to cycle the playlist. If items are absent, changing Repeat cannot restore them; rebuild the queue by starting the playlist again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer that a playlist was deleted or changed merely because one queue was incomplete. The cited support discussion records incomplete-queue reports, not a general rule about playlist contents or a guaranteed cause.

Android and desktop differences

Platform covered by the help material Documented action Important qualification
Android phone or tablet Open the playlist, start playback, tap Repeat until playlist or album repeat is selected; a 1 indicates the current song or video. The Android help also documents Shuffle play from the playlist menu or Shuffle from the player.
Desktop computer Start a playlist track and select Repeat; the same no-1 versus 1 distinction applies. The cited desktop help result is in Spanish, and placement can differ from the Android app.
Other devices or app versions Use the same icon-state test where available. The supplied official instructions do not establish identical labels or locations for every platform, television app or in-car interface.

If you are using an iPhone, television, car display or another client, look for the same Repeat states but do not assume the Android tap path is identical. The evidence cited here specifically covers Android and desktop, so a different layout should be treated as a platform variation rather than proof that playlist repeat is unavailable.

A reliable verification routine

When you need confidence that a playlist will continue while you are away from the screen, verify the complete chain rather than checking only one icon.

  1. Open the intended playlist, not an individual track from search results.
  2. Start playback and open Up Next.
  3. Confirm that the queue contains the playlist items you expect.
  4. Decide whether order matters. Leave Shuffle off for the saved order; enable it only when random order is wanted.
  5. Set Repeat and confirm that the icon has no 1.
  6. Check Autoplay according to the desired boundary: a looping playlist uses Repeat, while stopping after a fixed queue may require Autoplay to be off where that control is offered.
  7. Allow the queue to approach its final item once. If it returns to the beginning, the loop is configured correctly.

This test separates three common mistakes: repeat-one, an incomplete queue and Autoplay adding music after the queue. Correcting the relevant setting is faster than repeatedly restarting the same track.

Common configuration examples

Background music from a 12-song playlist

Start the playlist, leave Shuffle off, and select Repeat without 1. The 12 songs play in their listed order and then begin again. If the last song is followed by unrelated recommendations instead, inspect Autoplay and Up Next rather than selecting repeat-one.

A different order each time

Choose Shuffle play on Android or Shuffle in the player, then verify whole-playlist Repeat. The first cycle may not match the saved order, but the relevant requirement remains the same: Repeat must be selected without 1 if the shuffled set should continue cycling.

One track for an extended period

Select Repeat until the icon shows 1. This intentionally repeats the current song or video and does not advance through the remaining playlist. To return to playlist looping, cycle Repeat again until 1 disappears.

One pass, then silence

Do not use whole-playlist Repeat. Check the queue and investigate Autoplay if playback continues beyond the final listed item. The available specific Autoplay advice comes from the August 5, 2020 TeamYouTube response, so labels and placement may differ in the current player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you do and do not need

The repeat function is an in-app playback control. The documented procedure does not require a particular phone, computer, speaker or headphones; those devices only provide the listening output. The supplied help and support material does not establish that a paid YouTube Music subscription is required to activate playlist repeat, so do not treat an upgrade as a prerequisite based on this procedure.

An internet connection, account state, regional availability and content rights can affect whether a particular item plays, but the cited material does not provide a complete matrix for those conditions. If one item is unavailable, diagnose that playback problem separately from the Repeat state and queue composition.

Limits of the available guidance

The official help pages establish the key control behavior for Android and desktop: Repeat without 1 loops the playlist or album, while Repeat with 1 loops only the current item. They also document Android Shuffle entry points. The queue and Autoplay suggestions come from a TeamYouTube community answer dated August 5, 2020, not from a current official step-by-step page. Consequently, use those suggestions as practical checks, but verify the labels shown by your present app or browser.

No usage statistic or named quotation is needed to configure this feature. The result depends on selecting the correct Repeat state and ensuring that the active queue actually represents the playlist you meant to play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick reference

Your goal Repeat state Shuffle Queue check
Loop the playlist in its saved order Repeat selected without 1 Off Playlist items present in Up Next
Loop the playlist in a random order Repeat selected without 1 On Playlist items present in Up Next
Loop only the current song Repeat showing 1 Irrelevant Only the current item is needed
Play the playlist once Repeat off Optional Check Autoplay if playback continues afterward

The decisive check is simple: for continuous playlist playback, the Repeat icon must be in the whole-playlist state, visibly without 1, and the active Up Next queue must contain the playlist you intended to hear.
