To skip videos already played today, use a separate scheduler or custom controller that records playback dates and supplies OBS with a filtered playlist. YouTube’s playlist-repeat control is viewer-side; it does not control the sequence sent in your live broadcast.

Set up a playlist in OBS

Confirm how your videos enter the broadcast
If you are playing one local video at a time, OBS’s Media Source is designed for an individual file. For a playlist, use the VLC Video source. The distinctions and source controls are documented in the OBS Media Sources guide.

Install the matching VLC version
The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS documents availability on Windows, macOS and Linux, and specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

Add the playlist files
In OBS, add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist with the video files you want available for rotation. Check that the source can access the files and that the intended playlist is loaded before going live.

Choose loop and shuffle behavior
Use Loop Playlist to restart the source after it reaches the end of the media list. Use Shuffle Playlist to randomize order. These controls determine looping and order; they are not a filter for videos played earlier today.
Add the daily exclusion rule
To meet the exact “already played today” requirement, add a stateful scheduler or custom controller alongside the OBS playback source. The OBS documentation covers playlist, loop and shuffle controls, but does not document a daily playback ledger or date-based exclusion setting. The scheduler method below follows from that gap; it is not a verified, ready-made OBS integration.

Define what counts as played
Choose whether an item counts as played as soon as playback starts, only when it finishes, or after it has played for a minimum duration. This choice matters if a video is interrupted or the stream restarts.

Record playback against a date
Have the scheduler write a date-stamped record for each item when it meets your chosen rule. Use one consistent time zone for the daily reset so that “today” has a predictable meaning.

Filter before selecting the next item
At the start of a rotation—or whenever you need a fresh candidate list—exclude every item whose record matches the current date. Then select from the remaining videos.

Feed the filtered list to OBS
Configure the controller to update or feed the candidate playlist to the OBS playback source. The exact mechanism depends on your playback environment; the cited OBS controls do not establish a particular scheduler integration.

Handle an empty candidate list
Decide what should happen if every video has already qualified as played today: wait until the date changes, allow repeats, or alert an operator to add more content. Do not silently fall back to looping the full playlist if that would break your rule.

Keep viewer-side looping separate
YouTube’s playlist-repeat control repeats a video or playlist in the YouTube player. It affects what a viewer watches there, not the order of media your encoder sends to a YouTube Live broadcast. See YouTube Help on looping videos or playlists.

Where a playlist plugin fits
OBS has a separate Media Playlist Source plugin listing. Its existence is not evidence that it tracks which videos played on a given date, so do not rely on it to satisfy daily exclusion unless you independently verify that its current features meet your rule.
Troubleshoot common rotation problems
- VLC Video is missing from OBS: confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The playlist repeats but does not skip today’s videos: looping only restarts the list. Add a separate date-aware scheduler; neither looping nor shuffling is documented as daily history.
- Shuffle still selects a video played earlier today: shuffle changes order, not eligibility. Filter the candidate list using the playback ledger before selecting.
- The same video returns after midnight—or is skipped the next day: check that the scheduler records dates consistently and uses the time zone you intended for the daily reset.
- An interrupted video is treated inconsistently: apply the chosen “played” rule at the same event each time—start, completion, or a specified minimum duration.
- YouTube viewers see different repetition than expected: check the viewer’s player playlist-repeat setting separately; it does not alter OBS’s outgoing sequence.
