To loop a prerecorded museum exhibit video on YouTube Live, create an encoder-based live stream in YouTube Studio, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input file. That input option tells FFmpeg to repeat the file indefinitely. Test the feed privately or unlisted, confirm the picture, sound and stream health in Live Control Room, and clear the rights for every component before broadcasting publicly.

YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned event. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Confirm rights for the complete video
Having a file or permission to display an object in a gallery does not necessarily establish permission to livestream every element in it. Check the rights for artwork reproductions, photographs, film clips, narration, music and other third-party material. Record the permitted platforms, territories, broadcast period and whether an archived replay is allowed. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including relevant music rights. This is a platform requirement, not a legal determination about a particular collection or jurisdiction.

Choose where FFmpeg will run
A local workstation is workable if it can stay powered on, connected and monitored for the entire broadcast. A continuously available server or cloud machine avoids relying on a staff member’s desktop, but requires institutional IT approval, secure credential handling, reliable upload capacity and a plan for monitoring and restarting the process. The stream will stop if the machine or process stops.

Create the YouTube Live event and get its credentials

Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder-based stream, then set its title, schedule and visibility. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes creating a live stream with an encoder.

In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and the matching stream key into your encoder configuration. Use the values shown for that stream; do not substitute a key from another event.

Treat the stream key as a password. Do not put a real key in a public article, screenshot, shared script or public terminal recording. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. See Manage live stream settings.

Keep the event unlisted or otherwise private while configuring and testing. Switch to the intended public visibility only when the test is satisfactory and the rights and schedule are confirmed.
Loop one exhibit video with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: -1 means infinite repetition and 0 means no looping. Put the option before the input it applies to. The following is an illustrative configuration for a single file, not a tested or universally valid command:

-c:a aac -f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"The FFmpeg documentation supports the looping option and input/output structure; YouTube’s documentation supports encoder ingestion and recommends RTMPS. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and your stream’s current YouTube settings. Replace the example destination with the actual ingest details for the selected stream, keeping the key private. The appropriate protocol, codecs, frame rate, bitrate, audio handling and any scaling depend on the source file, YouTube stream configuration and installed FFmpeg build.

The example uses libx264 and AAC as a starting point, not a requirement for every source or system. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build includes the chosen encoders. If the source has no audio, or has unusual audio or video characteristics, adapt and test the output rather than assuming the sample command will work unchanged. If the process exits with an error, read the first FFmpeg error message and check the input filename, encoder availability, output URL and stream key.

The loop option shown applies to an input file; it does not define a playlist, transitions or gapless playback for a collection of separate files. Choose and test an appropriate concat or playlist workflow with the actual media. Inspect joins for black frames, pauses, audio discontinuities, changed aspect ratios and incompatible formats before scheduling a public event.
Set encoder output and test the feed
Match output to the source and connection
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and a maximum interval of four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 among supported video codec choices, with codec and protocol considerations. For ordinary SDR, its guidance specifies Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth; HDR has different requirements. Prefer RTMPS for secure ingestion.
Use a quality your stable upload connection can sustain rather than choosing the highest available setting by default. The source file’s resolution and frame rate, the selected YouTube stream configuration, available encoder options and sustained bandwidth all affect the right output. YouTube’s guidance does not make one bitrate universally right for every exhibit file and connection; consult its current settings page for the target resolution and codec, then verify stream health in a test.
Run a private or unlisted test

Start FFmpeg and wait for the event preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the correct exhibit video appears and that expected audio is present.

Watch the preview through a representative section of the loop, including the point where the file repeats. Check framing, color, audio level and whether the restart creates an unwanted pause or glitch.

Review YouTube’s stream health messages and address warnings before making the event public. YouTube recommends testing the stream, checking the preview and monitoring audio/video quality; see its live-streaming tips.

If the institution also records locally, check that recording separately and confirm its file is usable. A healthy live preview does not by itself verify a local archive.
Start and monitor the public broadcast
Once the test, rights review and event details are satisfactory, set the event to its intended visibility and start the encoder feed. Keep someone responsible for monitoring Live Control Room and the machine running FFmpeg throughout the broadcast. Watch for a stopped process, lost connection, stream-health alerts or a YouTube event that is no longer receiving data. Have the person on duty know how to restart the process and whom to contact if the stream key or event settings need attention.
Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube does not show the incoming feed: Check that the encoder is running, that the stream URL and key belong to the selected event, and that the channel is eligible to livestream. If livestreaming was just enabled for the first time, activation can take up to 24 hours.

FFmpeg reports that an encoder or format is unavailable: Check the installed build’s encoder support and adjust the command to match what it provides. The example is not guaranteed to work with every build or media file.

The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health: Check sustained upload capacity and encoder load. Choose a lower output quality if the connection cannot reliably carry the current one, then retest. YouTube advises matching quality to the available connection.

The video plays but expected audio is missing or wrong: Inspect the source’s audio tracks and the encoder output configuration. Confirm the result in Live Control Room before broadcasting to viewers.

The loop has a pause, black frame or audio break: Inspect the file’s end and beginning and test repeated playback. For multiple files, verify the selected playlist or concat method and each join with the actual media.

The feed stops after it has started: Check whether FFmpeg exited, the host lost power or network access, or YouTube stopped receiving the feed. Restart only after confirming the destination and key are correct; then verify the preview and stream health again.

A stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder’s private configuration before resuming.
