To keep one YouTube live event running while a gaming rerun changes videos, leave the encoder connected and switch the active content in OBS. Prepare the next scene, then use an OBS transition or configured hotkey to change over; do not stop and restart the encoder for each video. This is the workflow supported by YouTube’s encoder guidance and OBS’s scene controls, not a YouTube feature that guarantees a perfectly gapless handoff.
What “without a gap” means in this setup
YouTube receives one live feed from your encoder. OBS creates that feed from the active scene, and its scene controls let you change what the encoder is sending without ending the YouTube stream. Keeping the encoder output running avoids the deliberate end-and-restart that occurs when you stop sending content. The actual handoff still depends on your OBS setup and the content being ready in the next scene; the cited documentation does not promise frame-perfect or gapless switching.
YouTube’s encoder instructions say to end a stream by stopping content from the encoder. That makes stopping and restarting the encoder for every prerecorded video the wrong routine when your goal is one continuing live event. Set up the live event and OBS before switching
- Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Obtain the stream URL and stream key from the live-stream setup. YouTube describes the key as a credential that allows your encoder to send the feed.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In the encoder’s server and stream-key fields, use the URL and key supplied for that YouTube event. Keep the same connection active through the video changeovers. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish or share it.
- Prepare OBS scenes for the content you intend to show. Arrange the rerun videos so the next item can be selected as an OBS scene or otherwise made ready to switch into. OBS documents scene transitions, quick transitions, and configured hotkeys; choose a control you can operate reliably.
- Check the outgoing feed before going live. Start sending the encoder feed and confirm it appears in YouTube’s preview, following YouTube’s encoder workflow. Verify the scene actually shows the intended game recording and that the changeover control works before relying on it unattended.
- Keep the encoder running during each handoff. At the changeover, activate the next OBS scene using its transition or hotkey. Do not stop the encoder simply to load or select another video.
For exact controls and terminology, consult the documentation for your installed OBS version. The available OBS reference documents scene switching but does not establish the specific media-source options for automatic restart, looping, or advancing to the next file. Check those behaviors in the version you use rather than assuming a particular checkbox or playlist setting will work unattended.

YouTube settings that affect viewers, not scene switching
YouTube’s live settings include latency and DVR options. Latency is the delay between capture and playback; YouTube notes that choosing lower latency may mean more buffering. DVR lets viewers pause and rewind. These settings can shape how viewers experience the live feed, but they do not control OBS scene changes or make a handoff gapless. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archival detail, not a workaround for a gap and not a guarantee about switching content. The guidance does not establish what happens to archival behavior for streams that run 12 hours or longer.

Troubleshoot a failed or awkward changeover
- The YouTube event ends at the video change: Check whether you stopped sending content or stopped the encoder. Keep the encoder output active and change the content within OBS instead.
- The next recording does not appear: Check that the intended scene is active and inspect the encoder/YouTube preview before assuming the handoff worked. Confirm the content is arranged correctly in the installed OBS version.
- The switch needs to be unattended: Test the full sequence, including file completion and the next item, in advance. The cited OBS guide does not verify automatic file restart, looping, or next-item behavior, so consult the installed version’s media-source controls before scheduling an unattended run.
- Viewers report buffering: Review YouTube’s latency setting. Lower latency may increase buffering; latency is separate from OBS’s scene transition and will not repair a content-selection problem.
