The most reliable way is to have a desktop shortcut launch a short PowerShell script. The script uses Read-Host to display an editable console prompt, stores the response in a variable, and passes that variable to the command you want to run.
Save the script as a .ps1 file, then create a shortcut whose target calls PowerShell with -File. The result is a shortcut you can double-click whenever you need to enter or change a value before a command runs. This is a console prompt, not a graphical text-entry dialog.

The basic pattern
PowerShell’s Read-Host cmdlet reads one line from the console and returns a string by default. Microsoft describes it this way: “The Read-Host cmdlet reads a line of input from the console.” You assign the returned value to a variable, then use that variable in the command your shortcut is meant to run.

Write-Output $text
In this example, the prompt appears as Enter your text:. You can edit the line before pressing Enter, and the final line simply writes the entered value back to the console so you can verify the workflow. Replace that line with your task-specific command; the title of this guide does not identify what downstream command you need to run.

Save the prompt script
1. Open a text editor
Open Notepad or another plain-text editor. Do not use a word processor that adds formatting, because PowerShell needs a plain-text script.
2. Paste the script
Use the following minimal version first:
$text = Read-Host 'Enter your text'
# Replace this line with the command that should use $text.
Write-Output $text
The variable name $text is arbitrary. You can rename it to match the value you are collecting, such as $name or $query, but the same name must be used in the command below the prompt.
3. Save with the .ps1 extension
Choose File > Save As. Set the file name to something such as Prompt.ps1, choose a known folder, and make sure the save type is not silently adding .txt. If the file becomes Prompt.ps1.txt, the shortcut will not be pointing at a PowerShell script.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A simple location is a folder under your user profile, for example C:UsersYourNameDocumentsPrompt.ps1. The exact path does not matter; you will use the real path when creating the shortcut.
Create the Windows shortcut
1. Start the Shortcut wizard
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Choose New > Shortcut.
- When Windows asks for the item location, enter the PowerShell executable followed by the script parameters.
For the Windows PowerShell included with Windows, use this target pattern:
%SystemRoot%System32WindowsPowerShellv1.0powershell.exe -NoProfile -File "C:PathToPrompt.ps1"
Replace C:PathToPrompt.ps1 with the complete path to your saved file. Keep the quotation marks around the script path when the path contains spaces. In a shortcut target, -File must identify the script, and it should be the final PowerShell executable parameter.
2. Name the shortcut
Give it a descriptive name such as Prompt and Run, then select Finish. Double-clicking the shortcut should open a console window and show the prompt.

3. Test the unmodified script
Type a short value, press Enter, and confirm that the same value is printed by Write-Output. Testing this simple version separates shortcut problems from problems in the command you eventually intend to run.
What each part of the shortcut target means
| Part | Purpose |
|---|---|
%SystemRoot%System32WindowsPowerShellv1.0powershell.exe |
Launches Windows PowerShell using the Windows system directory. |
-NoProfile |
Starts PowerShell without loading the user’s PowerShell profile, making the shortcut less dependent on personal profile customizations. |
-File |
Tells PowerShell to run the script at the path that follows. |
"C:PathToPrompt.ps1" |
The script file to execute. Replace this example with your actual path. |
PowerShell’s command-line reference documents -File for launching a script. The shortcut does not contain the script body; it only starts PowerShell and points to the saved file. That makes later edits easier: change the .ps1 file without rebuilding the shortcut.
Windows PowerShell versus PowerShell 7
The target above uses Windows PowerShell, whose executable is normally located at the path shown. PowerShell 7 is a separate installation and uses pwsh.exe rather than assuming the Windows PowerShell path.
| Choose this | Use it when | Shortcut consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PowerShell | You want the Windows-provided shell and your script is compatible with it. | Use the %SystemRoot%System32WindowsPowerShellv1.0powershell.exe target pattern. |
| PowerShell 7 | PowerShell 7 is installed or your script specifically requires it. | Point the shortcut to the installed pwsh.exe path or use the pwsh executable alias available on your system. |
Do not change a Windows PowerShell shortcut to pwsh.exe unless PowerShell 7 is actually installed and available. Conversely, do not assume that the Windows PowerShell executable is the correct shell for a script written specifically for PowerShell 7.
How editable input works
Read-Host reads from standard console input. The line remains editable while the prompt is waiting, so you can correct text before pressing Enter. The returned value is a string unless you explicitly use another documented form of the cmdlet.
The documented maximum input length for Read-Host is 1,022 characters. If a value may exceed that limit, this console-prompt design is not suitable without changing the input method.
The prompt is not a standalone Windows dialog box. It appears in whichever console host is used for the PowerShell process. If your requirement is a floating graphical text box with controls such as buttons, labels, or multiline editing, that is a different implementation choice; Read-Host alone does not provide that interface.

Put the entered value into your command
The essential substitution is the use of $text after the prompt has returned. Keep the prompt and the command in the same script so the variable exists when the command runs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →$text = Read-Host 'Enter your text'
# Replace the next line with your task-specific command.
Write-Output $text
When you replace the final line, preserve the variable reference exactly. If you renamed the variable, use the new name consistently. A command that accepts a value as an argument should receive the variable in that argument position; a command that expects text inside a string can use PowerShell’s normal variable expansion rules.
Do not put the input directly into the shortcut target. Keeping the code in a script avoids a long, difficult-to-edit target string and makes quotation marks easier to manage. The shortcut’s only job is to launch the script.
Keep paths and arguments separate
If the command you add has a path containing spaces, quote that path in the command itself. Quote the script path in the shortcut target as well. These are separate parsing stages: Windows first interprets the shortcut target, then PowerShell interprets the script and its command.
Decide how an empty response should behave
Read-Host returns the line the user submits, including an empty line if the user presses Enter without typing. Whether that is valid depends on the command you are adding. If an empty value is not useful, add a validation branch in the script before the task-specific command and decide whether to ask again or stop. The validation rule belongs to your task, because the requested command and acceptable input were not specified here.
Make the prompt easier to maintain
Keep the input line near the top of the script and put the task-specific command immediately below it. This makes the data flow obvious: the prompt creates a string, the variable holds it, and the next command consumes it. A descriptive prompt such as Read-Host 'Enter the folder name' is easier to understand later than a generic label, while the variable can remain $text if that is clear enough for your script.
During setup, leave Write-Output $text in place. Once the shortcut reliably opens and accepts input, replace only that line and test again. If a later edit fails, restore the output line temporarily; that quickly tells you whether the problem is in the shortcut or in the command you added.

Use the same plain-text editor when making changes, save the file, and keep its location unchanged. Because the shortcut points to the file path rather than storing a copy of the script, edits take effect the next time you launch the shortcut. Moving or renaming the file requires an update to the shortcut’s -File argument.
Where the prompt window appears
PowerShell is the shell; Windows Terminal is a host application that can host PowerShell and Command Prompt. Which window appears depends on your Windows version and configured console host.
Recommended Free Tools
On Windows 11 version 22H2, Microsoft changed the default host for console windows to Windows Terminal after the October 2022 update. You can select Windows Console Host in Windows settings or in Windows Terminal settings if you need to change that behavior.
For most shortcut users, launching PowerShell directly is simpler than wrapping the command in wt.exe. Use a Windows Terminal command-line wrapper only when you specifically need Terminal behavior such as a particular profile, tab arrangement, or starting-directory setting. Windows Terminal’s wt execution alias is normally available; if it cannot be found, check the Windows Settings area that manages app execution aliases.
Useful shortcut properties
Start in
Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect the Start in field if your task-specific command relies on a working directory. A script launched with an absolute path can still be affected by the process’s current directory when the command inside the script uses relative paths. Set Start in to the folder your command expects, or use absolute paths in the script.
Run mode
The normal shortcut run mode opens a console window so the user can see the prompt and any output. Hiding the window defeats the purpose of an interactive console prompt, so leave the shortcut configured to show its console unless your own script supplies another interface.
Editing the script later
You can edit the .ps1 file without changing the shortcut, provided you keep the file at the same path. If you move or rename the script, update the shortcut target so the -File path matches the new location.

Troubleshooting checklist
The shortcut says it cannot find the file
- Open the shortcut’s Properties and verify that the script path after
-Fileis the real path. - Check that the file ends in
.ps1, not.ps1.txt. - Keep quotation marks around paths containing spaces.
- Confirm that
-Fileis followed by the script path and that no extra shortcut text has been inserted after it.
A window flashes and closes
- Run the script from an already-open PowerShell window using its full path so you can read the error instead of losing it when the shortcut window closes.
- Temporarily use the minimal
Read-HostandWrite-Outputscript shown above. If that works, the shortcut is functioning and the issue is in the task-specific command you added. - Check that the shortcut is calling the shell you intended: Windows PowerShell’s
powershell.exeor PowerShell 7’spwsh.exe.
The prompt never appears
- Make sure the target launches PowerShell with
-Fileand points to the correct script. - Confirm that the script actually contains a
Read-Hostline before the task-specific command. - Ensure the shortcut is not configured to hide the console window.
The entered text is changed unexpectedly
- Remember that
Read-Hostreturns a string. The command receiving it may interpret spaces, quotation marks, or other characters according to that command’s own argument rules. - Keep the value in
$textuntil the command consumes it, and quote paths or string arguments where PowerShell syntax requires quoting. - Test with a short value first, then with spaces and other characters your real task needs.
Long input is rejected
The documented Read-Host limit is 1,022 characters. That is a property of this prompt method, not a shortcut setting. For longer content, use a different input design rather than expecting the shortcut target to increase the limit.
Console prompt or graphical dialog?
| Requirement | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One editable line and a command launched from a desktop shortcut | PowerShell script with Read-Host |
It is short, uses built-in console input, and works directly with -File. |
| A floating window with buttons or other controls | A separate graphical implementation | Read-Host is console input, not a GUI dialog. |
| A specific Windows Terminal profile or tab behavior | PowerShell launched through Windows Terminal options | Windows Terminal is the host; PowerShell remains the shell running the script. |
| Input longer than 1,022 characters | A different input method | The documented Read-Host limit applies. |
Complete setup checklist
- Create a plain-text file ending in
.ps1. - Add
$text = Read-Host 'Enter your text'. - Keep
Write-Output $textwhile testing. - Save the file and note its complete path.
- Create a desktop shortcut with the PowerShell executable,
-NoProfile, and-File. - Quote the script path, especially when it contains spaces.
- Double-click the shortcut and enter a short test value.
- Replace the output line with the command that needs the value in
$text. - Retest with the real input, including spaces if your task requires them.
- Keep the script at the path recorded in the shortcut, or update the shortcut whenever you move it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this an editable Windows dialog box?
No. Read-Host provides an editable one-line console prompt. A floating window with buttons, labels, or multiline controls requires a separate graphical implementation.
How many characters can I enter?
Microsoft documents a maximum Read-Host input length of 1,022 characters. That limit belongs to the prompt method, not to the shortcut itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I use powershell.exe or pwsh.exe?
Use the Windows PowerShell path shown in this guide when you want the Windows-provided shell. Use the installed pwsh.exe path or alias only when PowerShell 7 is installed or required by your script.
Why does the shortcut need a separate .ps1 file?
The shortcut can stay short and stable while you edit the script independently. The -File parameter points PowerShell to the script, so you do not have to embed the script body in the shortcut target.
Why are quotation marks important?
A script or command path containing spaces must be quoted at the parsing stage where it is used. Quote the script path in the shortcut target, and quote any spaced paths in the PowerShell command itself.
What happens if I press Enter without typing anything?
Read-Host returns an empty line. Your script must decide whether that is valid, whether to ask again, or whether to stop before running the task-specific command.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I force the prompt to open in Windows Terminal?
The direct PowerShell shortcut is simplest for most users. Add a Windows Terminal wrapper only when you need a specific profile, tab arrangement, or starting-directory behavior. Windows Terminal is the host; PowerShell remains the shell.
What should I do if the window closes before I can read an error?
Run the script from an already-open PowerShell window using its full path. Also restore the minimal Read-Host and Write-Output version to determine whether the issue is the shortcut or the command you added.
The Bottom Line
Use a shortcut target such as %SystemRoot%System32WindowsPowerShellv1.0powershell.exe -NoProfile -File "C:PathToPrompt.ps1", and put $text = Read-Host 'Enter your text' in that script. The result is an editable one-line console prompt whose returned string can be passed to your own command.
