A Windows PC with 4GB of RAM can handle basic browsing, documents and streaming, but it has little room for many apps or tabs at once. First find out whether memory, the processor, storage or startup activity is causing the slowdown. Then try reversible changes before considering a hardware upgrade: 4GB alone does not tell you what your exact computer can support.
Find the bottleneck before changing anything
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes tab, look at the Memory, CPU and Disk columns while the PC feels slow; the Performance tab gives a broader view of those resources. On Startup apps, check which programs launch automatically. These figures are clues, not a diagnosis by themselves: a busy processor or disk can make a PC feel slow even when memory is not the main constraint. Microsoft recommends checking resource use and closing apps you are not using (Microsoft’s Windows performance guide).

- If memory use is consistently high during your ordinary workload, reduce the number of active apps and browser tabs; the PC may also benefit from more RAM if its model supports an upgrade.
- If CPU or disk activity is high, identify the process responsible before closing anything. Close only programs you recognize and are not using.
- If the slowdown is mostly during startup, review the startup list rather than disabling everything in it.
Make the biggest low-risk changes first
Reduce simultaneous work
Close browser tabs and applications you do not need. With 4GB of RAM, running fewer things at once is a useful first test. If the PC remains sluggish, save your work and restart it; that can clear temporary issues and is one of Microsoft’s recommended performance steps.
Disable only unnecessary startup apps
In Task Manager, select Startup apps, review an entry and disable it only if you know you do not need it to launch automatically. You can also find startup controls in Settings; the exact path and labels vary by Windows release. Some startup programs affect both boot time and ongoing performance. Keep security software, drivers, accessibility tools and sync apps you rely on enabled unless you understand the consequences of changing them. Microsoft’s instructions are in Configure Startup applications in Windows.

Install Windows updates and scan for malware
Open Windows Update in Settings, check for available updates and install them when practical. Updates can include fixes and performance improvements. Then open Windows Security and run a scan. Malware can consume processor and disk resources, so unexplained activity is a reason to check rather than assume the PC simply needs more memory. Avoid “RAM cleaner” and third-party driver-updater claims: these steps do not add physical RAM, and the cited Windows guidance does not establish that such utilities reliably improve performance.
Free disk space without deleting files blindly
Go to Settings > System > Storage and check the free space on the system drive. Low disk space can slow Windows and interfere with updates. Use Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup to review and remove temporary or system files you no longer need. Microsoft explains the cleanup options in Free up drive space in Windows.

Storage Sense works on the system drive. Its defaults do not clean the Downloads folder or cloud content; those require configuration. Review each category before deleting files, especially Downloads or previous Windows installations, which may contain personal files or affect your ability to roll back. Back up important files before deletion. Removing unused applications can also free storage and reduce background activity, but it does not create more RAM. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guide.

Reduce visual effects
Search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, then choose Adjust for best performance if you want to try reducing visual effects. Windows 11 effects use system resources, but the benefit varies with the hardware. The interface may look less polished, so treat this as an optional trade-off, not a guaranteed speed fix.

Try Best performance power mode when plugged in
When the PC is plugged in and battery life is not a concern, select Best performance under the Power mode setting in Settings, if that option is available. It can use more power, drain a laptop battery faster and make the device warmer. Compare how the computer behaves before and after, and switch back if the trade-off is not worthwhile.
Should you upgrade the RAM?
Possibly—but “4GB” is not enough information to choose a memory part. Some PCs can be upgraded; others have memory that is soldered in place or otherwise not replaceable. Find the exact model number and consult the manufacturer’s specifications for whether memory is replaceable, its supported type and form factor, and the maximum capacity. Microsoft also advises checking with the manufacturer or retailer (Windows 11 system requirements and upgrade guidance). Do not buy a DIMM or SO-DIMM based only on a listing that says it works with a laptop or desktop.

Decide based on evidence from Task Manager and the work you actually do. If memory is the limiting resource and the PC supports a suitable upgrade, additional RAM may let it handle more simultaneous activity. If the processor or storage is the bottleneck, more RAM alone may not resolve the slowdown. If an upgrade is not supported, compare repair cost and the PC’s capabilities with replacing the device. An HDD-based machine might have a separate SSD upgrade option, but support depends on the exact model.

Microsoft says people who mainly browse, work on documents or stream should aim for at least 4GB of RAM, recommends 8GB to keep a device running long term, and says 16GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance work. These are general recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC will run quickly. Microsoft explains the role of memory in All about computer memory.

Windows 11’s listed minimum requirements include 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, as well as processor and other requirements. Meeting the RAM minimum does not guarantee good performance or mean a PC meets every Windows 11 requirement. Separately, Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date, it no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10 under the standard support arrangement. Check your edition and servicing arrangement when deciding whether to stay on Windows 10 or move to a supported system.
Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve significantly from software steps and that upgrading the device may be the best long-term solution. Back up important files before uninstalling software, deleting files, resetting Windows or reinstalling it.
