How to Make a Windows Computer Start Faster

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most effective order is simple: disable unnecessary startup apps, remove software you no longer use, install Windows and manufacturer updates, free space on the system drive, and find out whether Windows is running from a mechanical hard disk. If the delay remains, use Safe Mode or a clean boot to isolate the cause. On an older HDD-based PC, a compatible SSD is usually a more meaningful upgrade than registry tweaks or visual-effect changes.

First, identify which part of startup is slow

“Startup” is not one event. Time a full restart, not merely waking from sleep, and measure power-on to sign-in separately from sign-in to a responsive desktop. Repeat two or three times and note whether the problem appeared suddenly.

  • Power button to manufacturer logo: BIOS/UEFI checks, boot order, USB devices and firmware.
  • Logo to sign-in screen: Windows boot files, drivers, updates and storage activity.
  • Sign-in to usable desktop: startup apps, cloud sync, antivirus, launchers and work-management tools.
  • Desktop appears but remains sluggish: indexing, updates, low memory, storage pressure, thermal throttling or a failing drive.

Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Check Startup apps, then watch CPU, Memory, Disk and the Performance page while signing in. Microsoft recommends these areas for finding resource-heavy components (Microsoft’s performance guide).

Safe fixes to try first

Disable unnecessary startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps in the left navigation.
  3. Review enabled entries. Right-click an app you do not need immediately after sign-in and choose Disable.
  4. Restart and compare the same timing.

You can also use Start > Settings > Apps > Startup. Disable only a few items at a time and keep a note or screenshot so changes are reversible. The Startup impact label is a prioritization hint, not a complete measurement: it does not show firmware time, services, network authentication or drive-health problems.

Do not casually disable Windows Security, touchpad, keyboard, graphics, audio, accessibility, backup, synchronization, VPN, authentication or hardware-control utilities that you deliberately need. The useful question is: must this program be available immediately after sign-in? To undo a change, return to Task Manager > Startup apps, choose the item, select Enable, and restart.

Uninstall software you no longer use

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find an unwanted application, select its … menu, and choose Uninstall.
  3. Restart after removing several background-heavy programs.

Game launchers, chat and meeting clients, creative-suite helpers, cloud-storage clients, printer utilities, manufacturer assistants, browser helpers and obsolete antivirus products can all add services or background work. Use the application’s uninstaller or Windows Settings; do not delete program folders manually. Microsoft documents this approach in its performance guidance.

Free space on the Windows drive

Open Start > Settings > System > Storage and turn on Storage Sense. Open its settings to choose the schedule and cleanup behavior. It normally handles temporary files and Recycle Bin contents on the system drive, usually C:, but does not remove Downloads or cloud files unless configured to do so (Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions).

For a manual review, search Start for Disk Cleanup, select the Windows drive, review each category and remove only items you recognize. Freeing space is most useful when the drive is nearly full or Windows cannot update, cache, page or create temporary files; it is not a guaranteed boot-time cure.

Install Windows and manufacturer updates

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
  2. Install updates and restart.
  3. Open Advanced options > Optional updates and review relevant driver updates.
  4. Check the computer maker’s official support page for applicable chipset, storage-controller, graphics, dock and peripheral firmware updates.

Apply a BIOS/UEFI update only when it is for the exact model and you can follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not update firmware solely because startup is slow.

Fast Startup: useful, but limited

Fast Startup saves the Windows kernel and loaded drivers in a hibernation file during shutdown, then restores them during the next startup. It mainly affects shutdown to startup; it does not make Restart equivalent, and it cannot fix a slow firmware screen, failing drive or bloated post-login desktop. Microsoft explains its role in the startup path (Windows startup engineering guidance).

  1. Search for Control Panel.
  2. Open System and Security > Power Options.
  3. Select Choose what the power buttons do.
  4. Choose Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  5. Under Shutdown settings, enable Turn on fast startup, then save.

The setting may be unavailable on some systems. A current control-panel walkthrough is provided by Windows Central. For dual-boot computers, Fast Startup can leave the Windows volume hibernated. A full restart is preferable when troubleshooting drivers, updates or hardware. If enabling it causes errors, test with it disabled and perform a complete restart.

Diagnose a stubbornly slow boot

Use Safe Mode

Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If startup is normal there, a nonessential driver, service or startup program becomes more likely. From Windows 11, use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, or hold Shift while selecting Restart. Then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and select Safe Mode. These paths also apply to Windows 10 (Microsoft Startup Settings).

Perform a clean boot

  1. Sign in as an administrator, search for msconfig, and open System Configuration.
  2. On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all and Apply.
  3. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
  4. Disable each enabled startup app, close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
  5. If the delay disappears, re-enable services and startup items in groups until the culprit is identified.

Keep a list or screenshots of every change. Clean boot can temporarily remove functionality; do not alter advanced System Configuration options casually. To restore normal operation, open msconfig, select Normal startup on General, restore disabled services systematically, re-enable startup apps in Task Manager, and restart. See Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure.

Check the storage device

Persistent 100% disk activity, repeated retries, health warnings, bad sectors, very low free space or an aging HDD can make both boot and sign-in slow. Use the drive manufacturer’s diagnostic utility and back up important files before stressing a suspect drive.

Hardware changes that can matter

Replace an HDD with a compatible SSD

If Windows still runs from a mechanical hard disk, an SSD is often the highest-impact practical upgrade. Microsoft notes that faster storage reduces the cost of reading and initializing boot data (startup engineering guidance). The exact gain depends on the CPU, memory, firmware and startup software.

Before buying, identify whether the computer uses a 2.5-inch SATA drive, M.2 SATA or M.2 NVMe. An M.2 shape alone does not guarantee compatibility. Check the laptop or motherboard manual, supported capacity and interface. Back up data, prepare recovery or Windows installation media, and retrieve the BitLocker or device-encryption recovery key before cloning or replacing the drive. Confirm the new drive is recognized in firmware and Windows.

Add RAM when memory is the bottleneck

More RAM mainly helps when Task Manager shows memory pressure and paging during sign-in or normal use; it does not shorten the firmware phase. Check memory generation, SODIMM versus desktop DIMM, maximum capacity, slot count, soldered memory, supported speed and dual-channel requirements before purchasing.

Know when replacement is sensible

Replacement is more rational when the machine has a failing or non-upgradable drive, soldered low-capacity memory, an unsupported processor, severe thermal problems or several costly component issues. Upgrade first when a healthy, otherwise capable PC has an HDD or clearly insufficient RAM.

When a Windows reinstall is justified

A clean reinstall is a last-resort software fix after clean boot, Safe Mode and storage checks. Consider it when years of unwanted software, suspected malware, persistent corruption or failed repair tools leave a healthy, capable computer slow.

  • Back up personal files.
  • Verify browser synchronization or export passwords.
  • Record software licenses and installers.
  • Save BitLocker recovery keys.
  • Create installation media or confirm access to Windows Recovery Environment.
  • Understand which partitions and files will be erased.

Windows Recovery Environment includes repair and troubleshooting tools and may appear automatically after repeated failed starts (Microsoft Recovery Environment documentation).

Use this symptom-to-action guide

Symptom Likely direction Best first action
Long delay before the Windows logo Firmware, USB device, boot order or hardware Disconnect peripherals and inspect UEFI/BIOS settings; update firmware only when applicable.
Windows logo takes a long time Drive, drivers, updates or corruption Check disk activity and health, install updates and test Safe Mode.
Sign-in is quick but the desktop takes minutes Startup apps and services Disable startup apps, then perform a clean boot.
Disk remains at 100% after sign-in HDD, paging, sync, updates or a failing drive Identify the process, check storage health and consider an SSD.
Memory is nearly full Insufficient RAM or too many background apps Reduce startup load and evaluate a compatible RAM upgrade.
Problem began after one installation App, service, driver or updater Uninstall it or isolate it with clean boot.
Boot is fast but applications launch slowly Storage, RAM, CPU or background processes Inspect Task Manager after sign-in rather than changing startup settings alone.

What not to do

  • Do not use registry cleaners or aggressive “one-click optimizers” by default.
  • Do not run random debloating scripts.
  • Do not mass-disable Windows services; use Microsoft’s controlled clean-boot method instead.
  • Do not rely on unofficial driver-updater utilities.
  • Do not manually delete Windows or application folders.
  • Do not treat third-party defragmenters as necessary. Windows’ Defragment and Optimize Drives can be used by searching Start for that name and selecting Optimize; traditional HDDs may benefit from defragmentation, while Windows should manage SSD optimization.

Visual effects can be reduced through Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows > Visual Effects > Adjust for best performance, and Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode > Best performance can be tested when plugged in. These settings may improve weak hardware’s responsiveness, but they rarely fix the main boot bottleneck and can increase heat or battery drain (Microsoft’s guidance).

Windows 10: support has ended

Microsoft ended normal Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Existing PCs continue to run, but no longer receive normal free security updates, feature updates or technical support. Check Windows 11 eligibility and the free-upgrade requirements for supported devices. Unsupported systems may qualify for the consumer Extended Security Updates program through October 12, 2027, according to Microsoft’s current guidance (Windows 10 lifecycle information; Windows 11 upgrade FAQ). An operating-system upgrade does not automatically cure an HDD, low-RAM or firmware bottleneck.
