A Windows 11 alarm can ring when the Clock app is closed or Windows is locked, but the computer must remain awake for notifications to appear. To make an alarm dependable, verify its schedule, prevent sleep during the alarm window, keep a laptop or tablet powered, turn up the volume, check the time zone, and review Focus or Do not disturb settings. If the wake-up is critical, use an independent alarm as a backup because it does not depend on the PC remaining available.
What Windows 11 alarms can—and cannot—do
Microsoft’s Clock support guidance states: “Alarms and timers work even if the app is closed or your device is locked.” Closing Clock or pressing Windows + L therefore should not cancel an enabled alarm. Locking the screen is different from allowing the computer to enter sleep.

Sleep is the first reliability check. Microsoft warns that, in the sleep-related notification scenario, notifications appear only while the device is awake and directs users to review Screen and sleep settings. A computer that sleeps before the scheduled time may not provide the audible or visible result you expect. Read Microsoft’s full explanation in How to use alarms and timers in the Clock app in Windows.

| Device state | What Microsoft documents | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Clock app open | Alarms are available in the Clock app. | Confirm the alarm is enabled and its repeat days are correct. |
| Clock app closed | Alarms and timers still work. | No special app window needs to stay open. |
| Windows locked | Alarms and timers still work. | Locking is not the same as sleep. |
| Computer asleep | Microsoft’s warning says notifications in this scenario show only while the device is awake. | Adjust sleep timing or keep the device awake for the alarm window. |
Microsoft’s support pages do not publish a missed-alarm percentage or a general reliability rate for Windows 11 Clock. Treat the checks below as ways to remove known failure conditions, not as a guarantee that every PC configuration will behave identically.

Set up and verify the alarm itself
Before changing Windows power settings, make sure the alarm is actually configured for the time you expect. A disabled alarm, wrong repeat selection, or a time entered on the wrong day can look like a playback failure.
- Open Start, type Clock, and open the Clock app.
- Select Alarm in the Clock app.
- Locate the alarm and confirm its toggle is on.
- Check the hour and minute, including whether the display is using the intended 12-hour AM/PM choice.
- Open the alarm’s repeat or schedule controls and select every day on which it should run. A one-time alarm will not automatically repeat the next day.
- Check the alarm sound and duration options shown by your Clock installation, then save any changes.
Use a short test interval rather than waiting until morning: set a test alarm for a few minutes ahead, leave the machine in the state in which you plan to use it, and confirm that you can hear it. Testing exposes sleep, volume, and notification problems while you can still correct them.
If the Clock icon is shown on the taskbar, Microsoft describes a bell badge as an indicator that an active alarm exists. A missing badge is a quick reason to reopen Clock and check the alarm toggle and schedule. Taskbar behavior is covered in Microsoft’s Customize the Taskbar in Windows guide.
Keep the PC awake during the alarm window
For a laptop or tablet, the most important reliability decision is what happens while the lid is closed or the device is idle. Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep and inspect the sleep timers for both battery and plugged-in operation.

- Compare each sleep timeout with the time at which the alarm must sound. If the computer will sleep beforehand, choose a longer timeout or another arrangement that keeps it awake.
- Check both battery and mains-power columns. A setting that works while plugged in may not apply when the device is running on battery.
- For a critical alarm, connect a laptop or tablet to power. Microsoft specifically advises keeping a portable device plugged in and setting its volume high enough to hear the alarm.
- Do not assume that closing the lid merely locks Windows. Depending on the device’s power configuration, lid closure can also lead to sleep; verify the result with a test alarm.
Keeping the display on is not the same as keeping the computer awake, and locking Windows is not the same as sleep. The practical goal is an awake system at the scheduled moment. If you must leave the machine unattended, test the exact lid, charger, and lock arrangement you will use overnight.
On a desktop, check the same Screen and sleep page even if you rarely use battery power. Automatic sleep, power plans, or a monitor-and-system timeout can still put the PC into the state that prevents a timely notification.
Check date, clock, and time-zone settings
An alarm that fires at an unexpected local time is often a clock or time-zone issue rather than a sound issue. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time and verify:
Recommended Free Tools
- The displayed date and time are correct.
- The time zone matches your current location.
- Automatic time-zone selection is enabled if you want Windows to determine the zone from location services, or that the manually selected zone is intentional.
After changing a time zone or correcting the clock, reopen Clock and recheck the alarm’s next occurrence. This is particularly important when traveling, changing daylight-saving rules, or using a device that has been offline for a long period. Microsoft directs Windows users to the Date & time page for these changes; the relevant Clock instructions are in Microsoft’s Clock support article.

Make the sound audible
Windows can schedule an alarm correctly while the resulting sound is effectively inaudible. Before relying on it, raise the device’s main volume and confirm that the selected output is the speaker or headphones you will actually use. Microsoft advises setting the device volume high enough to hear and keeping a portable device plugged in.
- Check the speaker icon in the taskbar and raise the master volume.
- Disconnect Bluetooth headphones or speakers if they may be powered off, out of range, or connected to another device when the alarm runs.
- Make a short test alarm with the same output arrangement. Do not test through headphones if you plan to sleep away from them.
- Ensure the device is not muted by a keyboard mute key, a monitor’s audio control, or an external speaker’s own volume knob.
These checks address audibility; they do not keep a sleeping computer awake. Confirm both conditions independently.
Review Focus, Do not disturb, and notification visibility
Notification modes can change what appears on screen even when the alarm is scheduled. Windows Focus includes an Alarms only option intended to hide everything except alarms. Windows Do not disturb silences most notifications but allows banners for alarms and reminders, along with notifications from selected apps. The exact controls and exceptions are described in Microsoft’s Focus: Stay on Task Without Distractions in Windows and Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows.
- Open Settings > System > Focus and inspect whether a focus session or an automatic schedule overlaps the alarm.
- If you use Focus, select the Alarms only behavior when you want other notifications hidden without suppressing alarms.
- Open Settings > System > Notifications and review Do not disturb rules and allowed notifications.
- For a diagnostic test, temporarily disable an overlapping focus or Do not disturb schedule, then run a short alarm test.
- Press Windows + N to open Notification center after the test. If an alarm notification is present there but no sound was heard, investigate volume or audio output; if no notification appears, return to sleep and notification settings.
Do not treat a quiet notification as proof that the alarm was never scheduled. Focus and Do not disturb primarily affect visibility and banners, while sleep determines whether the device is awake to present the notification at all.
Use background permissions only as a secondary check
Some Windows app settings expose background-permission choices such as Always and Power optimized. Microsoft explains that Power optimized can still allow notifications and periodic updates, but that statement is not a universal promise that changing the setting repairs every Clock alarm problem.
If Clock exposes an advanced option on your installation, record the current value before changing it and use a short test alarm to evaluate the result. Do not make background permission your first fix: verify the alarm schedule, awake state, power, clock, volume, and notification modes first. Microsoft’s privacy explanation is available in Windows background apps and your privacy.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Confirm the schedule. In Clock > Alarm, verify the toggle, time, and repeat days. If available, look for the taskbar bell badge that indicates an active alarm.
- Check the next occurrence. Make sure the alarm is not a one-time entry whose date has already passed and that the time is interpreted with the correct AM/PM setting.
- Check sleep timing. In Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep, ensure the computer will still be awake at the scheduled moment.
- Repeat while plugged in. Connect the laptop or tablet to power, then run a short test. This separates battery or power-state problems from Clock configuration problems.
- Raise and test audio. Set the device volume high enough to hear, select the intended output, and run another short test without relying on remote or Bluetooth audio.
- Verify the system clock. In Settings > Time & language > Date & time, correct the date, time, and time zone, then recheck the alarm.
- Inspect Focus and Do not disturb. Review schedules, choose Alarms only when appropriate, and check Notification center with Windows + N.
- Consider background permissions. Only after the preceding checks, inspect any Clock background setting and retest; Power optimized may still allow notifications.
- Recreate the alarm if configuration remains suspect. Delete the problematic entry, create a new alarm with the intended repeat days, and test it before relying on it. This removes an accidentally incorrect schedule without assuming a Windows-wide defect.
Diagnose the symptom you actually saw
The alarm works in a test but fails overnight
Compare the overnight state with the test state. The usual differences are sleep, battery power, lid closure, a changed audio output, or an automatic Focus schedule. Repeat the test with the laptop plugged in and awake, then introduce one change at a time until the failure returns.
The screen is locked, but no sound is heard
Locking itself should not stop an alarm according to Microsoft’s Clock guidance. Check the master volume, selected output, mute controls, and whether the device entered sleep after locking. A lock-screen test that leaves the computer awake is more informative than simply observing that the display is off.
A banner appears but there is no audible alarm
This points toward audio rather than scheduling. Check volume, speaker selection, Bluetooth connections, and any mute control, then run a short test using the built-in speakers.

The alarm appears at the wrong local time
Open Date & time settings and verify the time zone and date. Correct the setting, then inspect the alarm’s next occurrence. A time-zone correction can change when a scheduled local-time alarm is due.
No notification appears in Notification center
First confirm the computer was awake and the alarm was enabled. Then review Focus and Do not disturb rules and run a short test with those schedules temporarily removed. Notification center is a diagnostic clue, not a replacement for checking sleep and the alarm’s schedule.
Prepare a dependable alarm routine
For an alarm you cannot afford to miss, perform this checklist before the first night:
- Create the alarm in Clock and verify its repeat days.
- Run a test while the computer is locked but awake.
- Run a second test with the planned lid, charger, and sleep configuration.
- Leave a laptop or tablet plugged in and set the volume high enough to hear.
- Confirm the correct time zone in Date & time settings.
- Review Focus and Do not disturb schedules that overlap the alarm.
- Check the taskbar bell badge when you need a quick indication that an alarm is active.
- Use Notification center with Windows + N during testing to see whether a notification was generated.
If the alarm is for medication, an early flight, a safety duty, or another consequence where one missed sound matters, use a standalone backup alarm clock. A battery-powered bedside alarm clock can operate independently if the PC is asleep, shut down, out of power, or otherwise unavailable. It does not repair Windows Clock or prevent the PC from sleeping; it simply removes the computer as a single point of failure.
What to remember
Windows 11 does not require the Clock window to remain open, and locking the device is supported. The decisive distinction is whether the computer remains awake when the alarm is due. Set the schedule correctly, prevent sleep for the relevant window, keep portable hardware powered, make the sound audible, verify the time zone, and account for Focus or Do not disturb. Then test the exact arrangement you will use rather than assuming a successful daytime test covers every overnight condition.
