The grid tells you what should play and when; it is not the same as a scheduled YouTube live event. For a 24/7 channel, plan the rotation, confirm rights, test playback and bandwidth, and decide how you will preserve recordings: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Start with a video inventory, not the calendar
Keep the asset list separate from the weekly schedule. That way you can change a block without losing track of a video’s runtime or usage permissions.
- Identify the file: record the title and filename.
- Measure its place in the grid: note the runtime and theme.
- Check suitability: flag audience suitability and any opening slate or end card the video needs.
- Record rights evidence: keep the license or permission with the asset details, including territory, term and whether live streaming is covered.
- Track rotation: record the last-played date so you can spot overused videos.
Leave out anything whose rights or terms are unclear until you resolve them. YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music rights. A video’s availability on YouTube does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
Choose a repeat pattern viewers can understand
Pick a small set of recurring labels—such as “how-to morning,” “archive afternoon” or “community picks”—and assign them to recognizable dayparts. A predictable pattern makes the schedule easier to communicate; a deep enough library helps keep the same few videos from appearing too often.

Decide how each block behaves after its final video: loop the block, move to another block, or play a holding slate. A fixed order is predictable; shuffle can add variety but makes the exact sequence less predictable. The OBS Media Sources guide documents playlist playback and says shuffle is off by default for VLC Video. YouTube does not publish an ideal rotation length or repeat interval in the cited guidance, so set one that fits your library and review how often each item actually recurs.
Draft a seven-day grid with times and handoffs
Use UTC or name the audience time zone explicitly. Estimate each block by adding the videos’ runtimes and transition time; do not assume a playlist lasts exactly a day without calculating it. Leave room for maintenance and a contingency block rather than promising every minute as guaranteed content.

This is a planning example, not a YouTube requirement. Add the actual UTC start time, ordered video list, block duration, transition or slate, title and description, rights check, and the operator or automation action for each block. For daypart changes, prepare a playlist per block and specify who or what switches it at the scheduled time.
Set up playback and connect it to YouTube
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s current help guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days; first-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours. Confirm your channel’s eligibility and the current Studio interface before the planned broadcast. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Choose playback for the schedule. In OBS, use a Media Source for one local file that should loop, or a VLC Video source for a list of media items. VLC Video supports a playlist; enable Loop Playlist if the list should restart, and leave Shuffle Playlist off for a deliberate ordered rotation. Confirm the controls in your installed version; the OBS guide was dated 2022-01-11.
- Plan daypart changes explicitly. OBS’s cited guide documents playlist playback, not a complete seven-day calendar scheduler. Use an appropriate automation rule or an operating procedure to switch prepared playlists at grid times; do not assume a playlist alone will perform calendar-based handoffs.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use the Manage tab to schedule a stream or reuse settings where appropriate. For an encoder connection, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: keep it private and reset it if exposed. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection workflow.
- Match the broadcast to your actual source and connection. Keep the stream within the upload bandwidth available to the encoder. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate; include a backup encoder’s bitrate in the total if one is running. The cited guidance does not establish one universal bitrate or resolution for every source and connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Choose between a continuous event and scheduled events
The weekly grid is your programming plan. A YouTube scheduled stream is an event page viewers can find in advance and use for reminders; it does not, by itself, create a dayparted playlist or guarantee that the encoder changes content at the right time.

- One continuous event: useful when operational continuity matters, but a 24/7 event crosses YouTube’s archive limit. You also need a separate way to announce weekly changes.
- Shorter scheduled events: give viewers upcoming pages and reminders and can make archive boundaries easier to manage, but require more planned starts and handoffs.
YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers scheduling, reusable settings and event features. To promote a schedule, share stream links ahead of time, state the regular cadence on your channel, and communicate changes. YouTube also suggests organizing archives and highlights into playlists; see Promote your live stream and Upload schedule tips for live streams.
Preflight the stream and monitor it while live
YouTube recommends beginning encoder setup at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before an event. These are setup recommendations, not guarantees against a network or service failure.

- Start the encoder early enough to inspect its output.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm the watch page is accessible.
- Verify both audio and video, including after a playlist transition.
- Monitor the feed continuously and keep an operator or recovery procedure available for failures.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on a single 24/7 event to produce a complete YouTube VOD. If a full recording matters, record locally and check that the file is growing. Size storage from the recording bitrate, resolution, recording time and retention plan, and establish a backup procedure. YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup in its live stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common rotation problems
- The same few videos keep returning: the playlist may be shorter than expected or looping sooner than planned. Recalculate total runtimes, expand the cleared library, or change the block sequence.
- Videos play in an unexpected order: check the playlist order and whether shuffle is enabled. For a fixed sequence, keep shuffle off.
- The next daypart does not start on time: a playlist loop does not establish a calendar handoff. Check the automation rule or operating procedure against the grid’s time zone and start time.
- The preview or watch page is unavailable: check the encoder connection and stream key, then confirm the Live Control Room preview and page access before the scheduled start.
- The stream is unstable: compare total encoder bitrate with available upload bandwidth and restore the recommended headroom. Include any backup encoder in the calculation.
- A recording is missing or incomplete: a 24/7 event may exceed YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit. Use a local recording and verify that it is being written.
- A video cannot be cleared for broadcast: remove it from the rotation until its live-stream, music, territory and term permissions are established.
