The practical choice is between two separate production pipelines. A 2D avatar begins as a layered illustration, is rigged in Live2D Cubism, and runs in a Live2D-compatible tracker such as VTube Studio. A 3D avatar can be customized in VRoid Studio, exported as a VRM file, and run in VRM-compatible software such as VSeeFace. Choose the pipeline by the kind of source asset and editing work you want to do, then select software that accepts the resulting file format.
Neither route is universally better. Your illustration skills, desired appearance, tolerance for rigging, tracking hardware, licensing needs and the software you plan to use all affect the sensible starting point.

What a VTuber avatar actually is
A VTuber avatar is a digital character whose face and body respond to your movements while you speak or stream. The visible character is not created by the tracking application itself. You first create or obtain a model, then load that model into a compatible runtime that interprets camera or phone data.
That distinction prevents the most common beginner mistake: choosing tracking software before checking the model format. Live2D Cubism models and VRM models are different asset types. A program built for one does not automatically open the other.

Use this table as a planning filter rather than a quality ranking. The finished look and workload depend on the scope of the character, the detail of the art, the rigging you request and the behavior you want on camera.
How to make a 2D Live2D avatar
1. Prepare an illustration for movement
Do not begin with a single flattened image if you want a model that can blink, turn or move its mouth. Draw the character as organized, separate parts: eyes, pupils, brows, mouth components, hair sections, face and body elements that need independent motion. Keep layers clearly named and preserve enough hidden artwork behind areas that will move. A head turn, for example, can reveal portions of hair or face that are invisible in a static front-facing drawing.
Live2D’s tutorial sequence starts with illustration processing and preparation for movement. Its introductory exercises then demonstrate eye blinking and vowel mouth shapes before progressing to facial movement, body movement, expressions and motion. Follow that sequence when learning because each stage depends on the previous layer structure. The tutorials are available at Live2D Cubism Tutorials.
2. Bring the prepared art into Live2D Cubism
Import the layered artwork into Live2D Cubism and create deformers and parameters that describe how it should move. Typical parameters control eye openness, pupil direction, mouth shapes, eyebrow position, head angle and torso lean. You are converting two-dimensional parts into a set of controlled deformations, not merely adding a filter to a finished picture.
Build and test one behavior at a time. Start with blinking and a simple mouth-open parameter, check that the hidden artwork does not produce gaps, then add head and body movement. Add expressions after the basic face works; otherwise it becomes difficult to tell whether a problem comes from the base rig or an expression override. The official tutorials cover this progression, including expressions and motion.
3. Export for a Live2D-compatible runtime
When the model behaves correctly in Cubism, export it in the format expected by your chosen application and keep the complete model folder together. VTube Studio is an example of a runtime that loads Live2D Cubism models. Its manual explicitly states that it does not support VRoid or VRM files, so a Live2D model should not be exported with the expectation that any VRM application will open it.

If you commission the artwork or rigging, agree in writing on the source files, exported model files, allowed edits, commercial use, credit requirements and whether the artist may display the work in a portfolio. Live2D’s tutorial site points to a marketplace for rights to use and process illustrations and Live2D data; it does not establish a standard commission price or a universal license. See the tutorial and marketplace reference when checking what rights you need.

VTube Studio can use a smartphone or a webcam for face tracking. A phone is therefore an alternative to buying a camera, while webcam tracking does not require the smartphone application. For webcam tracking, the VTube Studio manual recommends 1280×720 or higher for good eye and blink tracking and describes 15–30 frames per second as sufficient. These are setup recommendations, not a guarantee that every model will track identically.
How to make a 3D VRM avatar
1. Create the character in VRoid Studio
VRoid Studio provides a beginner-friendly 3D route. Start with its presets, then adjust facial features, hair, clothing and other proportions. The editor combines sliders and selectable components with texture drawing, so you can move from broad shape changes to hand-painted details without building a mesh from scratch.
A pressure-sensitive pen tablet can make texture work easier, but it is optional. VRoid Studio also documents texture editing with pen tablets and support for Apple Pencil in its iPad version. You can complete the basic character with a mouse or other input device if that suits your workflow.
2. Check asset terms before exporting
VRoid Studio’s product information states that you can use any version of the software for free. Free software does not make every included asset unrestricted. VRoid explains that creators can set terms for data they create, including whether commercial use is allowed and whether credit is required. For Pixiv or third-party data, follow the specific asset’s terms and licensing conditions.

3. Export a VRM model
Export the finished character as a VRM file. Keep an untouched backup of the exported file and the editable VRoid project so you can revise the character later. The VRM export is the handoff point between creation and performance software.
4. Load VRM into compatible software
VSeeFace is one example of a runtime that supports VRM and VSFAvatar models. Its documentation says it does not support Live2D, so a Cubism model cannot be substituted for a VRM file in that application. The VTube Studio manual makes the reciprocal limitation clear: VTube Studio supports Live2D Cubism and not VRoid or VRM.
5. Configure expressions and tracking behavior
After loading the VRM, check how expressions, eye movement and mouth shapes respond. VSeeFace explains that model behavior depends on the VRM expressions and blendshape setup. A custom or converted model may therefore need additional expression configuration before it responds as expected. If a smile, blink or mouth shape is missing, inspect the model’s expression and blendshape assignments rather than immediately replacing the webcam.

Software compatibility is the non-negotiable decision point
Match the runtime to the model format before troubleshooting cameras or buying accessories.
- Live2D Cubism model: use a runtime that explicitly supports Live2D Cubism, such as VTube Studio.
- VRM or VSFAvatar model: use software that explicitly supports VRM, such as VSeeFace.
- VRoid Studio project: this is an editable creation project; export it to VRM before loading it into a VRM runtime.
- Unsupported combination: changing webcam resolution cannot make a Live2D-only application open a VRM file, or make a VRM-only application interpret a Cubism model.
Check the runtime’s supported formats whenever you change applications, convert a model or download a model from another creator. File extensions and marketing descriptions are not interchangeable compatibility guarantees.
Tracking equipment and room setup
Phone versus webcam
For a Live2D setup in VTube Studio, phone tracking can remove the need for a separate webcam. Webcam tracking is useful when you prefer a single-camera desktop arrangement or are working with software that expects camera input. Choose based on the runtime and your preferred setup, not on an assumption that a costly camera is mandatory.

For VSeeFace, the documentation describes 720p to 1080p as the webcam resolution sweet spot. It also emphasizes bright lighting and warns that insufficient light can reduce camera frame rate. More pixels do not necessarily improve tracking if the camera image is dark or noisy.
Placement and lighting checklist
- Place the camera near eye level so the tracking software sees a natural face angle.
- Light your face from in front or slightly to the side; avoid a bright window directly behind you.
- Keep your face within the camera frame while testing expressions and head turns.
- Use the model’s preview to verify blinks, pupils, mouth opening and head rotation separately.
- Lower resolution or close other camera-using applications if frame rate drops.
A basic “720p USB webcam” can be enough for a webcam-based starting setup when lighting is good, while phone tracking may let you avoid that purchase entirely. A pen tablet or stylus is similarly optional and matters mainly if you plan to draw or edit artwork and textures yourself.
Costs, free software and usage rights
Software pricing is not the same as model cost
VRoid Studio says, You can use any version of VRoid Studio for free.
That statement concerns the software. It does not set the price of commissioned art, custom rigging or third-party assets.
VTube Studio’s desktop Steam listing describes the application as free and lists optional paid downloadable content, including an optional watermark-removal DLC. Prices and included features can change, so verify the live listing at VTube Studio on Steam before budgeting.
Budget for the scope you actually need
There is no comparable authoritative total-price figure for a finished 2D commission versus a finished 3D commission in the cited documentation. Obtain quotes that specify the number of expressions, body angles, toggles, revisions, source files, export formats, commercial rights and delivery schedule. A simple model and a highly articulated model are different projects even when they use the same format.

- Confirm whether you may use the model commercially, including monetized streams, sponsorships and promotional clips.
- Check whether credit is required and where it must appear.
- Ask whether you may edit the model, commission later revisions or give files to another rigger.
- For third-party VRoid assets, retain the individual license terms instead of relying only on the editor’s general terms.
- For commissioned Live2D work, clarify who owns or may use the illustration, rig files and exported model.
2D and 3D: how the trade-offs differ
| Factor | 2D Live2D | 3D VRM |
|---|---|---|
| Visual foundation | Painterly or graphic illustration divided into movable layers | Three-dimensional character with editable shapes, clothing and textures |
| Where customization happens | In the artwork and Cubism rig | In VRoid Studio’s presets, controls and texture editor |
| Typical learning challenge | Preparing layers and building believable deformations | Choosing and refining 3D parts, then checking expressions and blendshapes |
| Runtime requirement | Live2D-compatible application | VRM-compatible application |
| Camera alternatives | Phone or webcam in VTube Studio | Webcam guidance documented by VSeeFace |
| Rights exposure | Illustration, rig data and commissioned-use terms | Creator-set VRoid terms plus every third-party asset license |
The table describes workflow differences, not universal outcomes. Neither format is automatically cheaper, easier or better at tracking. Your result depends on the model’s construction, the expressions and motions you request, the runtime configuration and the quality of your camera data.

Common problems and targeted fixes
The model will not load
Identify the file type first. A Cubism model belongs in Live2D-compatible software; a VRM belongs in VRM-compatible software. If the format is correct, confirm that you selected the complete exported model folder or the intended VRM file and that the export finished without errors.
The avatar loads but barely moves
Check tracking permissions, camera selection, lighting and face position. For VTube Studio webcam tracking, use at least the recommended 1280×720 resolution when eye and blink tracking are poor, while keeping frame rate in the documented 15–30 FPS range. For VSeeFace, improve front lighting before increasing resolution; its documentation notes that high resolution alone does not guarantee better tracking.
Blinks or mouth shapes look wrong
In a Live2D model, inspect the eye and mouth parameters and the deformed artwork around them. In a VRM model, inspect expression and blendshape assignments because VSeeFace relies on those definitions for model behavior. Test one expression at a time so you can identify whether the error is in the model or the tracking input.
Hair, clothing or face parts reveal gaps
This usually indicates that the source asset was not prepared for the movement you are asking it to perform. Return to the illustration layers in the 2D pipeline and add hidden painted areas, or return to the VRoid model and adjust the relevant 3D part or texture. Do not expect the runtime to invent missing artwork or geometry.
You are unsure whether an asset can be used commercially
Pause the upload or stream and read the asset-specific terms. VRoid Studio distinguishes creator-made data from Pixiv or third-party data, and commissioned Live2D work should have written usage terms. If the license does not clearly cover your planned use, request clarification or choose an asset with clear permissions.
A practical first-project plan
Choose 2D when your starting point is illustration
- Plan the character and list the motions and expressions you actually need.
- Draw and organize separate layers for those motions, including hidden areas behind moving parts.
- Work through the Live2D Cubism tutorial sequence, beginning with preparation and basic blinking or mouth shapes.
- Build facial, body and expression parameters, testing each before adding the next.
- Export the Cubism model and load it into a Live2D-compatible runtime such as VTube Studio.
- Connect phone or webcam tracking and tune lighting, framing and parameters.
Choose 3D when you want editable presets and textures
- Assemble the character in VRoid Studio using presets and adjustable features.
- Edit hair, clothing and textures, using a pen tablet only if it improves your drawing workflow.
- Review creator and third-party asset permissions, especially for commercial use and required credit.
- Export the character as VRM and keep the editable project as a backup.
- Load the VRM into compatible software such as VSeeFace.
- Check expression and blendshape behavior, then configure webcam tracking in a well-lit space.
Which route should a beginner start with?
Start with the route that matches the asset you can realistically produce. If you already draw and want a character with a deliberately illustrated look, prepare layered art and learn the Live2D Cubism pipeline. If you prefer editing presets, proportions and textures without preparing a 2D layer stack, build a VRoid Studio character and export VRM.
Make the runtime decision before purchasing hardware or commissioning work. VTube Studio is a Live2D runtime, while VSeeFace is a VRM runtime; neither should be treated as a universal avatar loader. A phone can replace a webcam in the documented VTube Studio workflow, and ordinary webcam resolutions can work when lighting and model setup are sound. Spend money on the model scope and rights you need, not on assumptions that a premium camera or paid software tier is required for every beginner.
