A safe UPI payment follows three rules: choose the correct payment route, verify the recipient and amount before authorizing, and check the transaction record in your app afterward. Enter your UPI PIN only to approve a payment you intend to make; never enter it to receive money or disclose it to another person.
If a payment is pending, failed, missing from the recipient’s account, sent to the wrong person, or appears unauthorized, use the transaction details and reference number to escalate through your bank and the app’s complaint tools. Do not resend a payment while the first attempt is unresolved.

What you need before making a UPI payment
You need a smartphone with a UPI app, an active bank account, and the mobile number registered with that bank account. For BHIM, NPCI’s registration guidance also uses the debit card linked to the selected bank account when setting up or changing the UPI PIN. These are account and registration requirements; they do not mean you need to buy a special scanner, PIN pad, token, or new phone.

- Make sure the bank-registered mobile number is active in the phone during registration and normal use.
- Select the bank account from which you want the money debited if the app has more than one account.
- Know your UPI PIN, but keep it private. Your UPI PIN is not the same as an app login password or the one-time password used for some bank services.
- Use a screen lock and keep the app and phone operating system updated.
Menus and labels differ between apps and banks. The underlying checks are the same, but a button called Pay, Send, Scan and Pay, Transaction History, or Report Issue may appear in a different location.

Choose the payment route that matches the details you have
NPCI’s BHIM guidance lists three ordinary ways to send money. Pick one, then verify the details the app displays before authorization.
| Route | What you enter or scan | What to verify before entering the PIN |
|---|---|---|
| UPI ID | The recipient’s UPI ID, such as a name followed by a bank handle | The resolved recipient name, the amount, and the account selected for debit |
| Bank account and IFSC | The beneficiary’s account number and bank IFSC | The beneficiary name shown by the app, the account digits where displayed, the amount, and the debit account |
| QR scan | The payee’s UPI QR code scanned in the app | The merchant or person name returned by the QR, the amount (especially if you must type it), and the debit account |
A QR code is only a way to supply payment details. Scanning it does not prove that the person presenting it is the intended payee, so still compare the name and amount on the confirmation screen.
How to make a UPI payment safely
1. Open the registered app and select the debit account
Open your UPI app directly rather than following a payment link sent by an unknown person. Choose the bank account that should be charged. If you are paying a shop, ask for the shop’s own QR or UPI ID and avoid substituting a personal account without confirming the recipient.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Select UPI ID, account plus IFSC, or QR scan
Choose the route that matches the information supplied by the recipient. For a UPI ID, type it carefully and let the app resolve the account name. For an account transfer, enter the account number and IFSC exactly as provided. For a QR payment, scan inside the UPI app, not in an unrelated camera or web form.

3. Compare the confirmation screen with the intended payment
Before authorization, stop and check three items:
- Recipient identity: Does the name returned by the app match the person or business you intend to pay? A similar-looking UPI ID is not sufficient.
- Amount: Is the amount correct, including any added tip, convenience fee, or extra zero?
- Debit account: Is the displayed bank account the one you meant to use?
Correct an error before continuing. Once a payment is authorized, you should not assume that it can be stopped. A confirmation screen is therefore your last reliable opportunity to catch a mistyped ID, wrong QR code, or wrong amount.
4. Enter the UPI PIN only in the authorization flow
Enter the PIN in the UPI app when you have verified the recipient and amount. Never tell the PIN to a caller, shop worker, courier, supposed bank representative, or support agent. NPCI’s July 2023 UPI HELP guidance states: “Kindly refrain from sharing your UPI PIN.”
A legitimate payment does not require you to disclose the PIN in a chat, phone call, form, or screen-sharing session. If someone says a PIN is needed to receive a refund, prize, salary, or incoming transfer, treat that as a warning sign.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →5. Understand a collect request before accepting it
A collect request is an invitation for you to pay the requester; it is not money arriving in your account. BHIM describes a flow in which the recipient of the request can pay or decline it and must authenticate acceptance with the UPI PIN. Entering the PIN in that flow authorizes a debit to the requester. Decline requests you do not recognize, and confirm the identity and amount for any request you do accept.

6. Wait for the app’s result instead of closing it immediately
Allow the app to finish processing and note the displayed result. Save the transaction reference, UPI transaction ID, or UTR shown in the details screen. A bank SMS can be a useful alert, but the transaction record in the UPI app is the official place to review the payment history and status described in BHIM’s guidance.
How to check whether the payment succeeded
- Open the same UPI app used to make the payment.
- Open Transaction History, Transactions, or the account’s payment activity.
- Select the payment using its date, amount, recipient, or reference number.
- Read the status shown in the transaction details, not just a notification preview.
- Record the reference number before contacting the recipient, bank, or app support.
In BHIM, NPCI directs users to the transaction section for status, and its FAQ says the history view includes past and pending activity. Other apps may use different labels, but the transaction-detail screen serves the same purpose.
What each UPI transaction status means
| Status | Meaning | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Success or completed | The payment has been confirmed as successful in the app. | Share the transaction reference with the recipient if they cannot locate the credit. Verify that you paid the intended UPI ID or account. |
| Pending | Confirmation has not yet been received. The final outcome is unresolved. | Do not immediately send the same payment again. Open the transaction details, use the app’s issue or UPI HELP option where available, and follow the bank’s instructions. |
| Failed | The attempted transfer was not completed successfully. | Read the failure message, confirm that no debit was made, and use the app’s complaint route or contact the account-holding bank if the debit or reversal is unclear. |
| Declined or rejected | The bank or payment system refused the request. | Check the stated reason, such as an incorrect detail or bank restriction. Correct the cause before trying again, and do not repeat a payment that still shows another unresolved state. |
| Unauthorized or unrecognized | You did not approve or recognize the transaction. | Contact your bank immediately through its official channel, block or secure access as directed, and report the transaction as fraud. Do not wait for a routine settlement window. |
“I performed a transaction, but it is showing pending. What should I do?”
Pending means the system has not supplied final confirmation. It is different from a failed transaction. Do not resend the same amount while the first transaction remains pending: a delayed first attempt could later complete and create a duplicate debit.
- Open the pending transaction and copy its reference number.
- Use Report Issue, Help, or the app’s UPI HELP option from the transaction details if that feature is available.
- Check whether your bank account was debited and whether the recipient’s bank has credited the money.
- Keep screenshots or the reference number, but do not share your UPI PIN or one-time password with anyone assisting you.
- If the app does not resolve the case, contact the bank that holds the debited account and quote the reference number.
Official guidance does not provide one universal deadline for every pending case. NPCI’s FAQ refers to a 48-hour delay for beneficiary-bank settlement in one pending scenario. BHIM’s FAQ gives T+2 working days in one answer and T+3 days in another failed or pending support section. Those statements describe particular support scenarios, not a guarantee that every payment will be settled or refunded by the same hour or day. Follow the current status and case-specific instructions from your app and bank.

“What should I do if I have transferred the money but it hasn’t been credited to the receiver’s account?”
First, open the transaction and confirm that the status is Success, not pending or failed. Then compare the recipient details in the transaction record with the details the recipient expected. A successful payment sent to the correct UPI ID may still take time to appear in the recipient’s account view, so give the recipient the transaction reference and ask them to check the bank account linked to that UPI ID.
If the app shows success but the recipient still cannot locate the credit, contact your account-holding bank with the reference number and ask it to trace the transaction. The recipient can also contact their bank. Keep the original transaction record; do not create a second payment merely because the recipient has not yet refreshed their balance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when a UPI payment fails
Open the failed transaction and read the precise message. Common causes include an incorrect UPI ID or account detail, a bank-side service interruption, a limit or account restriction, or a temporary inability to obtain confirmation. The message and the bank’s records are more useful than guessing from a missing SMS.
- If no debit occurred, correct the detail or wait for the service to recover before trying again.
- If your account was debited but the app says failed, do not pay again until the debit is reconciled. Use the transaction’s issue-reporting path and contact the bank.
- If the app changes from pending to failed, retain both the original reference and the final status.
- If the same failure repeats, ask the bank whether a daily limit, beneficiary restriction, account block, or maintenance event is involved.
If you paid the wrong person or entered the wrong details
Contact your bank promptly and raise a complaint with the transaction reference. A completed UPI payment generally cannot be cancelled unilaterally by the payer. Recovery may depend on the recipient’s cooperation and the banks’ ability to contact or request a return from the beneficiary.
Best Value
Do not send the recipient your UPI PIN, card details, or login credentials while asking for a return. If the person agrees to return the money, the return should appear as a separate, clearly identified transaction in your account; never approve an unrelated collect request simply because someone promises a refund.
If you see an unauthorized UPI transaction
Report it to the bank that holds the affected account immediately through the bank’s official app, website, branch, or telephone number. NPCI’s complaint guidance routes issues through member institutions and directs users to report fraud or unauthorized transactions to the bank. Tell the bank which transaction you did not authorize, when you noticed it, and the reference number.
- Do not call back a number supplied in a suspicious message.
- Do not reveal the UPI PIN, card PIN, one-time password, or screen-sharing code.
- Follow the bank’s instructions to secure the account and digital payment access.
- Keep the message, transaction notification, and complaint acknowledgement for your records.
BHIM as an official example of the flow
BHIM is NPCI’s official example of a UPI app, but its exact menu layout should not be assumed to match every bank or third-party app. In BHIM, registration uses a smartphone, bank account, and bank-registered mobile number. The app supports payments through a UPI ID, account number with IFSC, or QR scan. Its transaction area shows past and pending activity, and its transaction details provide an in-app route to report an issue.

Safety checks that prevent most UPI mistakes
- Verify the name: A successful name lookup is not a substitute for confirming that it is the person or business you intend to pay.
- Check the amount digit by digit: QR codes may supply an amount, while other QR codes require you to type one.
- Use only the app’s PIN screen: No legitimate helper needs to know your PIN.
- Treat collect requests as outgoing payments: Approving one debits you; it does not credit you.
- Ignore urgency: A caller who pressures you to scan a QR code, approve a request, or disclose a PIN is a fraud risk.
- Keep evidence: Save the transaction reference and complaint acknowledgement until the matter is closed.
- Do not trust an SMS alone: Confirm the result in the app’s transaction record and, when necessary, the bank statement.
- Do not retry unresolved payments: Wait for a pending or debited-failed transaction to be reconciled before making another payment.
How to escalate an unresolved payment
- Start with the transaction details in the app and use its Report Issue, Help, or UPI HELP function.
- Provide the transaction reference, date, amount, recipient details, and the status displayed by the app.
- Contact the bank holding the account that was supposed to be debited. If the recipient’s account is involved, the recipient may need to contact their own bank as well.
- For a complaint that remains unresolved, use NPCI’s complaint facility, which can route an issue to the relevant member institution.
- For fraud or an unauthorized debit, contact the bank immediately rather than waiting for a routine pending or refund timeline.
App labels, bank limits, settlement handling, and support timelines can change. The live transaction screen and your bank’s case-specific response are authoritative for an individual payment.
