Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can make a useful first prototype with cardboard, paper, tape, and other household scraps. The goal is not to build a polished product; it is to test one clear idea, notice what happens, and make a targeted change.
What a prototype is—and what it is not
A prototype is a working model built to investigate an idea. You use it to find out whether a design performs a particular job, where it fails, or what should change. It does not need to look finished.
That differs from a model made mainly to show what something might look like. Stanford d.school describes a prototype as “a tool that gives you a chance to investigate your ideas and explore what could, should, or would come next, whether you are designing a new product, working out a new routine, or rearranging your furniture.” A simple object made from scraps can do that job if it helps answer a question.
Choose a small problem and define success
Pick one everyday problem that can be tested with a quick build. For example: a phone keeps sliding flat on a desk, and you want a stand that holds it upright while you read. Keep the first version limited to that task rather than trying to solve several problems at once.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Write down the need, a testable success criterion, and the constraints. For the stand, success might mean that the phone remains upright on the desk for one minute without sliding or tipping. Constraints could include the phone’s size, the space available on the desk, and the materials you have. TeachEngineering’s design cycle likewise starts by identifying a need, criteria, and constraints.
Gather household materials and basic tools
Use materials that can perform the test and are easy to adjust. You do not need a specialist kit for a simple early prototype.

- Cardboard from a box, cereal box, or other packaging
- Scrap paper, paper tubes, or a small cup
- Tape or glue
- Rubber bands, string, or paper clips for fastening or support
- Scissors and a ruler for cutting and measuring
Cardboard is useful when you need a shape that holds form but can still be cut or folded. Paper is quick to reshape but may be too weak for a heavier object; tape, clips, and glue make different joints and are not equally easy to undo. Choose based on what your test requires, not on a rule that one material is always best. Stanford d.school’s simple prototyping examples include paper, tape, scissors, and cardboard.
For children, use safety scissors and get adult help where needed. A craft knife or hot glue is not required for this kind of build; if either is used, it should be handled by an adult.

Sketch three ideas before building
Draw three quick versions of the stand, such as a folded-cardboard easel, a slotted base, or a small cradle with a back support. These can be rough sketches. Comparing alternatives on paper lets you choose one without spending time building each version; DIY.org recommends this quick three-idea approach.
Build a rough first version
- Choose the sketch that is simplest to make and likely to answer your question.
- Mark and cut or fold the cardboard into the main support and base.
- Join the pieces with tape or another available fastener, keeping the joints easy to change.
- Place the phone in the stand. Do not add decoration or extra features unless they are necessary for the test.
Use available boxes, packages, and paper tubes rather than waiting for ideal materials. The Tech Interactive’s cardboard activity also emphasizes building with available packaging, then testing and modifying the design.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Test it where and how it will be used
Put the prototype on the desk and use the phone in the way you intended. Check the success criterion you wrote down: does it stay upright for the full minute without sliding or tipping? Observe the build rather than guessing from its appearance.
Record one thing that worked and one specific problem. For example: “The back support holds the phone at a readable angle, but the stand tips when I tap the screen.” A concrete observation points to a design feature you can change.

Revise one feature, then repeat the same test
Connect the revision to the problem you observed. If the stand tipped when tapped, widen its base, lower the weight toward the base, or reinforce a loose joint. Those are possible fixes for a stability problem, not universal fixes for every prototype.
Change one feature at a time, then repeat the original test under the same conditions. If the stand now stays upright for a minute, the change helped with that requirement. If it still tips, note what happened and try another targeted revision. A collapse or failure is useful when it identifies what the next version needs to investigate.
When to stop or choose a different material
Stop when the prototype answers the question you set out to test, or when you have learned what needs to change next. A rough build can be successful even if it is not durable or attractive, because its purpose is to reveal whether the idea works well enough to develop further.
If the build cannot hold its shape long enough to test, adjust the material or joining method. Use sturdier packaging, add a support, or choose tape instead of a fastener that slips. Make only the change needed to run the test; the best material depends on the intended job and the property you need to investigate.
