You can’t tame a sheep as a pet in Minecraft. To move one, hold wheat in your hand and walk it to an enclosure; use wheat on two sheep to breed them. Shears collect wool, which grows back after the sheep eats grass.
Can you tame a sheep in Minecraft?
No. The term “tame” does not describe the sheep mechanic: Minecraft’s overview classifies sheep as passive mobs and describes them as sources of food and wool, but does not describe a way to tame them as pets. You can lead sheep with wheat and breed them, but neither action makes a sheep a pet. (Minecraft’s mobs overview)

How to make a sheep follow you with wheat
- Get wheat and select it in your hand.
- Approach a sheep. Nearby sheep are attracted to wheat and follow while you stay close; Minecraft does not specify an exact following distance. (Minecraft’s wheat article)
- Keep wheat selected as you walk the sheep to a pen or farm enclosure.
- Once the sheep is inside, put wheat away and close the enclosure so it stays there.
How to breed sheep
Use wheat on each of two sheep to breed them; a lamb is produced. Wheat serves both to attract sheep and to breed them, but breeding is not taming. (Minecraft’s wheat article)
How to collect wool and get it to grow back
Use shears on a sheep to collect wool. Minecraft describes the yield as one to three wool blocks per shearing. After the sheep eats grass, its wool regrows, so you can shear it again. (Minecraft’s wool article)
