To keep every edge of a photo, set it from Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos, then zoom and reposition it in the Lock Screen preview. Pinch closed to zoom out and drag with two fingers to move the image. Check the clock, widgets and photo edges before tapping Add.
If you also need the image to reach every screen edge, an image with a different shape cannot do that while preserving every original pixel. You must either accept surrounding space, crop the photo, or create additional background. On supported iPhones, Photos’ Extend tool can generate that surrounding background.

What “without cropping” can mean on an iPhone
People usually mean one of two different results when they ask for a photo to fit their wallpaper without cropping:
- Keep the entire original photo: no part of the source image is removed, even if the wallpaper preview shows unused space or a mismatch at an edge.
- Fill the entire screen: the wallpaper reaches all four edges, with no bands or empty areas.
A single, unchanged image cannot always satisfy both goals. A photo and an iPhone display may have different width-to-height proportions. Enlarging the photo until every edge is covered cuts off part of it; shrinking it enough to show every edge leaves space around it. The only way to show the whole original and still fill the frame is to add pixels outside the original image, such as a matching or generated background.

Why the preview may appear to crop
The wallpaper editor is fitting the image to a tall, interactive frame rather than displaying the photo on a neutral canvas. A landscape photo, a square image and a portrait photo each meet that frame differently. The same source can therefore look complete in Photos but have an edge outside the wallpaper frame. This is a geometry issue, not evidence that the original file was silently damaged.
Decide which result matters before editing. If a person, pet, document or landmark must remain whole, start with the preview and accept some surrounding space if necessary. If the lock screen must look full-bleed, plan either a deliberate crop or an extended background. Making that decision first prevents repeated edits that remove more of the image than intended.
Choose the right approach
| Approach | Original edges | Fills the wallpaper frame | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjust the image in the wallpaper preview | May preserve more, depending on the photo and screen shapes | May require zooming or leave a mismatch; inspect the preview | Keeping the subject visible with the original photo |
| Photos > Edit > Crop > Wallpaper | No; the selected frame removes some of the original image | Yes, for the chosen crop shape | A deliberate full-screen composition |
| Photos > Edit > Tools > Extend | The central source image can remain intact while background is added around it | Can fill more of the frame after you inspect the generated result | Supported devices where the subject should stay uncropped |
| Leave the image unchanged and accept surrounding space, or choose another photo | Yes | Not necessarily | Preserving every original edge above all else |
There is no paid accessory or separate wallpaper utility required for these approaches. The controls are in iOS Photos and Settings. Extend is also software, but its availability depends on Apple Intelligence support rather than a purchase.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMethod 1: Set the photo first and adjust it in the wallpaper preview
Use this method when the subject matters more than a full-bleed image and you want to avoid changing the original file.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos, then select the image you want to use. Apple’s iPhone wallpaper guide documents this wallpaper-gallery path.
- In the Lock Screen customization preview, pinch closed to zoom out. This reveals more of the source photo.
- Drag with two fingers to reposition the image. Move a face, person or other important detail away from the clock and widgets.
- Pinch open to zoom in only as much as needed to remove unwanted space or improve the composition.
- Inspect the complete preview. Check the top and bottom edges, both sides, the Lock Screen clock, any widgets and the area that may be hidden by the Home Screen transition.
- Tap Add when the composition is acceptable, then choose the option that applies the wallpaper to the Lock Screen or both screens.
Zooming out does not change the photo in Photos; it changes how that photo is positioned for the wallpaper. The preview is the authority because the final crop, overlays and available screen area are visible there.
How far you can zoom out
The preview cannot make an image’s proportions disappear. If zooming out exposes a band at one edge, that is the geometric limit of showing the complete original photo in the available frame. You can keep that result, select a different image, or use Extend when it is available.
A careful preview workflow
Make the first adjustment with the subject roughly centered, then zoom out before fine positioning. Moving the image while it is highly enlarged can hide how much of the opposite edge has disappeared. After every gesture, look at all four corners rather than only the face or object you are protecting. If you use a screenshot or a photograph containing writing, check complete words and borders; a small shift can remove a line of text even when the central subject appears safe.

Remember that the Lock Screen is not just a blank image. The clock occupies the upper area, widgets can occupy the lower area, and the available space changes with the selected Lock Screen layout. A composition that is correct with no widgets may need a two-finger drag after you add them. You can return to the wallpaper’s customization controls later instead of editing the source photo again.
Method 2: Use the Wallpaper crop preset when a crop is acceptable
This is the fastest route to a clean, full-screen wallpaper, but it is not a no-crop method. The preset changes the photo’s framing.
- Open the Photos app and open the picture.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap the Crop button.
- Open the aspect-ratio or preset controls and choose Wallpaper. Apple’s instructions for crop presets are in Crop, rotate, flip, or straighten photos and videos on iPhone.
- Review which parts of the image fall outside the selected frame. Reposition the crop so the subject remains visible.
- Tap Done to save the edit, or discard the edit if you do not want to alter the photo.
- Set the resulting image through Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos and check the Lock Screen preview again.
The same crop controls include other presets, such as Square and 9:16. Those presets are useful for other destinations, but selecting one still removes content outside its frame. A crop preset is a composition tool, not a way to preserve every edge.
Protect the original before editing
If you may want the uncropped version later, duplicate the photo in Photos before saving the crop, or rely on Photos’ edit-reversal controls. Apple says edits can be saved or discarded from the edit flow; keep an untouched copy when the original framing is important.
What to inspect after a crop
Look for more than a centered subject. Check hair, hands, wheels, building tops, horizon lines and any border that identifies a document. A preset applies a frame; it does not know which details carry meaning. Drag the crop until the least important background falls outside the frame, then set the wallpaper and perform a second check in the Lock Screen preview. The wallpaper editor can still require a small position or zoom change because its overlays and available frame differ from the Photos editor.
Method 3: Extend the background instead of cropping the subject
When the image must fill more of the wallpaper frame but the central subject should remain intact, use Photos’ Extend tool if your iPhone supports it.
- Open the photo in Photos.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Tools, then choose Extend.
- Use a pinch or drag to adjust how much surrounding background is needed for the intended composition.
- Tap Extend to create the expanded image.
- Inspect the added areas closely. Look for repeated patterns, warped lines, incorrect edges or background details that draw attention.
- Save the result, then set it through Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos. Make any final position adjustment in the Lock Screen preview.
Apple describes this workflow in Clean up, extend, and reframe photos on iPhone. Extend creates image content beyond the original frame; it does not recover details that were never captured outside the photo.

Who can use Extend
Extend is not a universal iPhone setting. Apple’s guide ties the feature to Apple Intelligence and notes that device, language and regional availability affect access. If the Tools menu does not show Extend, your iPhone, selected language or region may not support it. Do not treat its absence as a wallpaper error.

Evaluate generated background realistically
Extend is most convincing when the added area is relatively simple: sky, a plain wall, water or an evenly colored surface. Inspect the result at full size before using it as a wallpaper. Straight architecture, signs, repeated tiles and distinctive objects make errors easier to notice. If a generated edge looks unnatural, reduce the extension, reposition the original image, or choose a crop instead. The goal is a believable frame, not merely a larger file.
What to do when Extend is unavailable
You still have three honest choices:
- Keep the full photo: use the wallpaper preview to zoom out and accept surrounding space or a less-than-full-bleed result.
- Crop deliberately: use Photos’ Wallpaper preset and decide which edges matter least.
- Choose another image: a photo whose proportions are closer to the phone’s portrait frame may need less adjustment.
No wallpaper toggle can simultaneously preserve every edge of a differently shaped original and cover every screen edge without either cropping or adding background pixels. If a client, family member or employer supplied the image and its borders are important, keeping the uncropped version is the only way to guarantee those borders remain exact.
Make the Lock Screen preview readable
A photo can fit geometrically and still be a poor wallpaper if interface elements cover the important parts. Before applying it, use this checklist:
- Keep faces, text and other critical details clear of the clock at the top.
- Check whether widgets cover the lower portion of the image.
- Look at the extreme top, bottom, left and right edges for accidental cutoffs.
- Check both the Lock Screen and Home Screen if you apply the same wallpaper to both.
- View the preview at normal brightness; a dark or detailed background can reduce clock and widget legibility.
- If the image is a screenshot or contains text, zoom out far enough that letters are not clipped.
These checks matter because the wallpaper preview includes the interface that will sit over the image. A photo that looks centered in Photos may look off-center once the clock and widgets are present.

Portraits, landscapes and screenshots
For a portrait, leave extra room above the head when possible; the clock can occupy that area even when the face is centered in the original. For a landscape, decide whether the horizon or a side detail is more important before accepting a crop. For a screenshot or scanned document, preserving every edge may be more important than filling the display, so zoom out and accept surrounding space rather than clipping text. These are composition choices, not separate wallpaper modes.
Troubleshooting common results
The top of the subject is cut off
Return to the wallpaper preview, pinch closed to zoom out, and drag with two fingers to move the subject downward. If the frame still cannot show the subject and all of the original edges, switch to Extend, accept surrounding space, select another photo, or make a deliberate crop.

The wallpaper has empty space on one side
That space indicates the image is being preserved rather than enlarged until it is cropped. Keep it if preserving the original is your priority. Otherwise, use the Wallpaper crop preset or extend the surrounding background on a supported device.
The photo looks zoomed in even after selecting it
Open the Lock Screen customization preview and pinch closed. The wallpaper preview has its own positioning state; changing the image in Photos is not required just to zoom it out.

Undo or discard the crop, restore the original, and reposition the image manually in the wallpaper preview. If a full-frame result is essential, repeat the crop with the subject placed inside the selected frame rather than letting the preset make the decision for you.
Extend is missing or cannot be selected
Check whether your device, language and region meet Apple’s Apple Intelligence availability requirements. If the tool remains unavailable, use the uncropped preview, crop manually, or choose a different image; the standard wallpaper controls do not create new background pixels.
The image fits but the clock covers the subject
Move the photo with the two-finger drag gesture, then adjust zoom. If no position keeps both the subject and the clock clear, choose a less crowded area of the image, change the Lock Screen layout where available, or use another photo.
The result looks different on the Home Screen
The Lock Screen and Home Screen can present the same source with different interface elements. If you apply the wallpaper to both, inspect each screen before finishing. A placement that protects a face from the Lock Screen clock may still leave a Home Screen icon over a key detail. Return to the wallpaper customization controls and adjust the image rather than recropping the source unless the source itself needs changing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPreserve the source while experimenting
The safest workflow is to treat the original photo as your master and make changes only when the intended result requires them. First try the wallpaper preview, because it changes placement rather than the source image. If that cannot provide a full frame, create a copy before using the Wallpaper crop preset or Extend. Compare the edited result with the original at full size before applying it.
Best Value
Remember that a wallpaper can be adjusted again later: open Settings > Wallpaper, select the Lock Screen, and return to its customization controls. Repositioning there is preferable to repeatedly cropping the original when the only problem is placement.
The practical decision
Start with the preview if “without cropping” means keeping the source photo intact. Use Photos > Edit > Crop > Wallpaper when a full-screen composition is more important than every edge. Use Photos > Edit > Tools > Extend when you need a fuller frame without cutting into the central image and your device, language and region support Apple Intelligence. If none of those produces an acceptable result, the limitation is the mismatch between the photo’s shape and the display—not a missing wallpaper setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fill the entire iPhone screen and keep every edge of the photo?
Not with an unchanged image whose proportions differ from the display. You must accept surrounding space, crop part of the image, or add background outside the original. Photos’ Extend tool can add that background on supported Apple Intelligence devices.
Recommended Free Tools
Does pinching the photo in the wallpaper preview crop the original file?
No. Pinching and two-finger dragging change the wallpaper’s placement. The source remains unchanged in Photos unless you edit and save it there.
Where is the iPhone Wallpaper crop preset?
Open the image in Photos, tap Edit, tap Crop, open the preset or aspect-ratio controls, and choose Wallpaper. Review the frame because this option removes content outside it.
Why is Extend missing from Photos?
Apple documents Extend as an Apple Intelligence feature. Availability depends on the iPhone, selected language and region. If Tools does not show it, use the preview, crop deliberately or choose another image.
Should I use the Square or 9:16 preset instead?
Those are alternative crop shapes for other destinations. They still remove content outside the selected frame and are not a way to preserve every edge of the original wallpaper.
How do I keep the clock from covering a face?
In the Lock Screen preview, pinch closed to reveal more of the image and drag with two fingers to move the face away from the clock. Check the result again after adding widgets.
What is the safest way to experiment?
Try positioning in the wallpaper preview first. If you need Photos editing, keep an untouched copy or use the edit flow’s discard and reversal controls before committing to a crop or extension.
The Bottom Line
Try Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos first: pinch closed and drag with two fingers to keep the subject and as much of the original frame as possible. For a guaranteed full-screen composition, use Photos’ Wallpaper crop preset. If you need the frame filled without cutting into the subject, use Tools > Extend when Apple Intelligence supports it on your iPhone, language and region. No setting can remove the underlying shape mismatch without leaving space, cropping, or adding background.
