There is no single pixel size that fits every iPhone or Android device. Check the Lock screen and Home screen separately, because the clock, widgets, controls, and app icons can cover different parts of the same image.
Why a wallpaper gets zoomed, stretched, or cut off
A phone wallpaper is not simply displayed at the image’s original dimensions. The wallpaper picker has to fill a portrait screen whose proportions may differ from your photo. If the image is too wide, the system normally crops the left and right edges. If it is too short, it may enlarge the image until the top and bottom fill the display. The automatic crop can therefore remove a face, a line of text, or a logo that looked safe in the original.

Stretching creates a different problem: the phone forces the image into a new shape instead of removing an edge. Faces become wider or taller, circles become ovals, and straight lines look bent. A proportional crop preserves the photograph’s geometry; a preview lets you decide which part disappears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Lock screen and Home screen are separate compositions. A clock and notification area occupy the upper part of the Lock screen, while app icons and widgets can cover much more of the Home screen. A crop that looks balanced behind the clock may put the subject directly beneath an icon grid.

Start by identifying the exact screen
- Identify the phone. Decide whether the target is an iPhone or an Android phone, and note the specific model if you are sharing the file with someone else. Screen proportions and wallpaper behavior vary by device.
- Choose the destination. Decide whether the image is for the Lock screen, Home screen, or both. If you are making one file for both, plan around the more restrictive layout and still inspect each preview separately.
- Use the phone’s own preview as the final authority. Menu names and effects can change with operating-system updates, and Google notes that output may vary by device. The visible preview on the target phone is more useful than a generic size chart.
Do not begin by searching for a universal wallpaper resolution. A model-specific portrait crop is more predictable than a single export intended for every phone.
Choose and prepare the source image
Use the cleanest portrait source available
Start with the largest, sharpest version of the photograph you have. A high-quality source gives the crop more room to move the subject away from an edge. If the only copy is a compressed screenshot or a small download, enlarging it will not restore detail.
A landscape photo can still work, but do not rotate or resize it vertically by force. Instead, make a portrait crop that removes the least important side content. If the subject is already tight against an edge, choose another frame or create more breathing room with an editor that can extend the background naturally; never solve the problem by distorting the original.

Make a working copy
Save an edited copy rather than overwriting a valuable original. This lets you create a second composition for another phone or for the other screen without losing the starting image.
Crop the photo before applying it
Google Photos on Android
Google Photos provides the controls needed for a deliberate crop:
- Open the photo in Google Photos.
- Tap Edit, then Crop.
- Choose an aspect-ratio preset when one matches your target, or drag the crop handles manually to create a portrait frame.
- Use Auto frame when the subject is too tight and you want help repositioning it within the crop.
- Tap Save or choose Save as copy so the original remains available.
The preset only establishes a shape; it does not guarantee that the phone will use exactly that framing. Recheck the saved copy in the wallpaper picker.

iPhone Photos
In Photos, open the image, enter the editing tools, and use the crop controls to set a portrait frame. Apple’s iPhone guide lists presets including wallpaper, 16:9, and 5:4. Select the preset that best matches the intended composition, then drag the image inside the frame until the subject has room around it. Keep the original by saving the edit as a duplicate or by retaining an unedited copy in your library.
Because those presets describe proportions rather than a particular iPhone model, the wallpaper preview still determines whether the result is acceptable.
Any other editor
If you use a different editor, the essential controls are the same: lock the crop’s proportions, move the image rather than stretching it, and export a portrait copy. Avoid a “fit to canvas” command that adds unwanted borders if your goal is a full-bleed wallpaper; avoid “fill” commands that silently enlarge and crop the subject before you can position it.

Compose a safe area for clocks, widgets, and icons
Think of the crop as an interface background, not just a photograph. Place the face, product, pet, or other main object near the middle of the usable frame. The center generally survives automatic cropping better than the extreme edges.
- Top margin: leave clear space above the subject for the Lock-screen clock and notification details. A head, important text line, or logo touching the top edge is likely to be covered or clipped.
- Bottom margin: leave room for Lock-screen controls and the Home-screen dock or lower app row.
- Side margins: keep small lettering, signatures, and logos away from both sides, where a device-specific crop can remove them.
- Contrast: place critical details against a relatively simple area so white or dark system text remains legible. Busy detail behind the clock can make the image look wrong even when nothing is technically cut off.
- Subject scale: make the subject slightly smaller than you would for a social-media portrait. Extra surrounding image gives you room to reposition it after the preview applies its own crop.
For a person, keep the eyes and face in the central region while allowing empty space above the hair and below the shoulders. For a product or landscape, protect the horizon, label, or distinctive outline from the edges. If the design contains text, treat every character as essential: a line that is readable in the editor may sit underneath a clock or icon in use.

Apply and preview on Android or Pixel
Pixel workflow
On a Pixel phone, the documented path is:
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Wallpaper and style, then Change wallpaper.
- Choose your photo.
- Select Lock screen or Home screen.
- Tap Preview and inspect the complete screen, including the clock, widgets, controls, and icon positions.
- Tap Apply when the framing is correct.
Selecting the destination separately is important. A Lock-screen preview can show a clear face while the Home-screen preview places app icons over it. If either screen is poor, cancel, return to the crop editor, move the image, save a new copy, and preview again.

Other Android phones
Other Android interfaces may place wallpaper controls in Settings or in a long-press Home-screen menu, and labels can differ by manufacturer. Look for separate Lock-screen and Home-screen choices, a preview stage, and an option to apply the image only after you have inspected it. If the phone offers a motion, parallax, or zoom effect, temporarily disable it while judging the crop; an effect can shift a subject that was centered in the still preview.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Apply and preview on iPhone
On iPhone, open wallpaper customization in Settings and choose a photo or a designed wallpaper. Apple supports changing the Lock Screen and Home Screen independently. Build or edit the Lock Screen first, check the clock and any widgets, then configure the Home Screen and inspect its icon field. The same source image may need a different position or scale for each destination.
If the wallpaper editor offers a depth, perspective, or subject-separation effect, compare the ordinary still view with the effect enabled. Keep the effect only if it does not move the face, text, or logo into an overlay. The preview is the place to make that decision; the crop editor cannot show every system treatment.

Making one photo work on both screens
A single source can serve both screens when its important content is compact and centered, with relatively quiet space above and below. Start with one portrait crop, then perform two independent previews:
- Check it as the Lock screen. Move the subject down if the clock competes with it, and make sure controls do not cover a key detail.
- Check the same crop as the Home screen. Look at the full icon grid and dock, not only the top half of the image.
- If one screen fails, make a second crop from the same original rather than forcing one compromise file. Name the copies clearly, such as “model-lock” and “model-home,” so you can select the intended composition later.
Separate exports are also the safest choice when the same picture must work on two different phones. Different aspect ratios and wallpaper behavior can produce different results, and Google explicitly notes that output may vary by device.
Choosing the right workflow
| Workflow | Control over framing | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic crop in the wallpaper picker | Low | A photo with a small, centered subject and no important edge detail | The phone decides which edges disappear |
| Pre-crop in an editor, then preview | High | Faces, text, logos, or carefully composed scenes | Requires an extra editing step and may need separate copies |
| One crop for Lock and Home screens | Moderate | Simple images with generous empty space | Clock and icons occupy different areas |
| Separate Lock and Home crops | Highest | Portraits, typography, or subjects near an overlay | More files to manage |
| One file shared across different phones | Low to moderate | Casual sharing when exact framing is not critical | Device aspect ratios and output behavior differ |
Troubleshoot a bad result
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The face or subject is zoomed in | The source is too short or the automatic crop removed the sides | Return to the editor, make a taller portrait frame, and keep the subject smaller with more surrounding space. |
| The image looks stretched | The file was resized to a different shape without preserving proportions | Undo the resize and crop proportionally. Do not force the image to fill by changing its dimensions independently. |
| The clock covers the head or a text line | The subject is too high in the Lock-screen composition | Move the subject down and leave a clear top margin, then preview again. |
| Home-screen icons cover the important detail | The subject sits in the icon field | Move detail toward the center or use that composition for the Lock screen and create a quieter Home-screen crop. |
| One phone looks right but another does not | The devices use different aspect ratios or wallpaper behavior | Make separate exports for each device and verify each one in its own preview. |
| A previously safe edge is missing after applying | The picker applied an additional crop, zoom, or motion effect | Reopen the preview, reduce the image scale if available, turn off the effect while checking, or create a crop with more edge breathing room. |
| The image is sharp in the editor but soft on the phone | The working copy was too small or heavily compressed | Return to the largest clean source and export a fresh copy instead of repeatedly saving a compressed version. |
A repeatable checklist
- Target phone and model identified.
- Lock screen, Home screen, or both selected before editing.
- Largest clean source chosen; no vertical stretching applied.
- Portrait crop made in an editor, with the original preserved.
- Face, text, and logos kept away from every edge.
- Top space left for the clock and bottom space left for controls or icons.
- Lock-screen preview checked independently.
- Home-screen preview checked independently.
- Separate crop exported when one screen or another device needs different framing.
- Final result judged on the actual phone, not only in the photo editor.
The practical rule to remember
Perfect fit comes from controlling the crop, not from finding a magic wallpaper number. Match a portrait copy to the specific phone, protect the center and the overlay-free areas, and use each screen’s preview to catch the final crop. When the result is wrong, make a new proportional crop or reposition the subject; stretching the image only trades a cropping problem for visible distortion.
