A persistent Linux live USB keeps a normal live system’s read-only image and stores your files, settings, configuration changes, and (when supported) installed packages in a writable overlay or persistence image on the same USB drive. To build one, use an ISO that explicitly supports persistence, write it with the distribution’s recommended tool or prepare it in Ventoy, create the matching persistence store, boot the persistence entry, and verify a test file survives a reboot.
Persistence is not universal and is not interchangeable between distributions. Ubuntu-family releases commonly use writable or casper-style storage, Debian Live uses a persistence medium with persistence.conf, and Ventoy maps a persistence image to a supported ISO through ventoy/ventoy.json.

What a persistent live USB actually does
A conventional live USB starts Linux from a compressed, largely read-only ISO. The system can run without installing to the computer, but changes normally disappear when you shut down. Persistence adds a writable layer—an overlay, partition, or image file—on the USB. At boot, Linux combines that writable layer with the read-only base, so changes appear to be part of the running system.
The base ISO remains intact. Your writable area holds the differences: documents saved in the live session, desktop preferences, network profiles, configuration edits, and, where the distribution supports it, packages installed with the package manager. The writable area has finite capacity; it is not the same as installing Linux to an internal disk.

Persistence is implemented by the live system, not by the USB hardware alone. A persistence image mapped to an unsupported ISO cannot make that ISO persistent. You must match the storage convention and boot method to the exact distribution and release.
Choose the method that matches your ISO
| Method | Storage convention | How it is enabled | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu-family writer or tooling | Writable or casper-style persistence; the name and layout vary by release | Use the writer’s persistence option when offered, or select the release’s supported persistent boot entry | The simplest route when you are using one Ubuntu-family ISO |
| Debian Live | A persistence partition or image containing persistence.conf |
Choose the persistence boot option and provide the required configuration file | Debian live systems, especially when you need selective directories to persist |
| Ventoy | A persistence image file stored on Ventoy’s large data partition | Map the exact ISO to the image in ventoy/ventoy.json, then choose the persistence entry |
Multi-ISO USBs and reusable persistence images |
Do not copy an Ubuntu-style writable store onto Debian and expect it to work, or use Debian’s persistence.conf rules with an ISO that does not use Debian live-boot. The ISO’s own persistence documentation is the authority when a release changes its layout or boot parameters.
Materials and capacity planning
Use a USB 3.x flash drive with enough room for the ISO and the persistence store. The required size depends on the ISO file and on what you plan to retain; there is no universal minimum that suits every distribution. Leave additional free space for documents, package caches, logs, and upgrades.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A faster or high-endurance drive is a sensible category for frequent writes, but endurance and sustained-write performance vary by model. No single speed or lifespan figure applies to all USB drives. A drive bought from Amazon or another retailer is suitable if its capacity and interface meet your plan; the important requirement is adequate space and reliable operation, not a particular brand.
Before starting, have:
- The exact Linux ISO and its checksum if the project publishes one.
- A separate copy of any files currently on the USB. Writing an image or installing Ventoy can erase existing partitions.
- Access to a computer that can boot from USB and, if necessary, change its boot-device selection.
- A plan for how much space should be reserved for persistence rather than for additional ISO files.
Prepare the USB safely
- Back up the drive. Copy anything you need elsewhere. Treat the device as disposable until the new layout has been tested.
- Identify the correct USB device. On Linux, inspect the device list with a tool such as
lsblkand confirm the size and connection before selecting it in a graphical writer. Choosing the wrong disk can destroy another operating system or data volume. - Download an ISO that documents persistence. Persistence support is an ISO feature. If the project does not document a persistence mode for that release, plan on a nonpersistent live session or a full installation instead.
- Decide whether you need one ISO or several. A distribution writer is usually less complex for one supported image. Ventoy is useful when the same USB will hold multiple ISO files and persistence images.
Ubuntu-family live USB: use the release’s writable or casper method
Write the ISO with the recommended tool
Open the Ubuntu-family project’s USB startup or image-writing utility, select the downloaded ISO, select the USB drive, and start the write operation. Some releases and writers expose a persistence slider or a writable-space option during this process. If that control is present, allocate space for persistence before writing. The exact label and maximum size are release dependent.
If the writer only creates a read-only live medium, do not assume persistence was added silently. Check the release documentation for its supported writable or casper layout and boot entry. A release may require a particular partition label, file name, or boot parameter.
Boot the persistent entry
Insert the USB, restart the computer, and open its one-time boot menu. Select the USB in the firmware mode you intend to use. At the Linux boot menu, choose the entry that explicitly enables persistence, if one is provided. Some Ubuntu-family media use a menu entry; others require a persistence parameter supplied by the writer or by the project’s instructions.
Confirm the writable store is being used
Once the desktop appears, create a uniquely named text file in your home directory and change a visible desktop setting. Restart from the live system, boot the same persistent entry, and check both changes. If either is missing, you booted the nonpersistent entry or the writable/casper store does not match that ISO release.

Debian Live: build a persistence medium with persistence.conf
Create the persistence area
Debian Live persistence can use a dedicated partition or an image containing a file named persistence.conf. The persistence medium must have the label, file-system arrangement, and boot option expected by the Debian live-boot version in your ISO. Follow the Debian Live instructions for creating and labeling that medium rather than borrowing an Ubuntu layout.
Choose broad or selective persistence
The simplest configuration persists the writable branch of the live system. A typical broad rule is:
/ union
With a union rule, changes throughout the live file system can be stored, subject to available space and the live system’s behavior. Selective rules can limit persistence to paths you actually need, reducing clutter and making it easier to keep transient system changes out of the saved layer. For example, a configuration may name specific paths such as a home directory or selected configuration directories using the syntax documented for your Debian Live release. Do not copy a rule from an unrelated live-boot version without checking its supported syntax.

Enable persistence at boot
At the Debian Live boot menu, select the persistence option or add the required persistence parameter exactly as Debian documents for that ISO. The system must find both the persistence medium and its persistence.conf; otherwise it will start as an ordinary nonpersistent live session.
Test the rule you selected
Create a file inside a path covered by your rule and another in a path you intentionally left out. Reboot through the persistence entry. The covered file should remain; the excluded file should not. This test demonstrates whether your selective configuration is doing what you intended before you store important data on the USB.
Ventoy: map a persistence image to a supported ISO
Install Ventoy without losing the wrong disk
Ventoy installation repartitions the selected USB. Back up the drive, verify its device name and capacity, and confirm the installer is targeting the removable disk. After installation, Ventoy provides a large data partition where you can copy ISO files and persistence images.
Place the ISO and image on the data partition
Copy the exact ISO that supports persistence to the Ventoy data partition. Create or obtain a persistence image in the format required by that ISO and store it on the same partition. The ISO and image both consume space, so reserve room for additional files and for the image’s writable content.

Create the mapping file
Ventoy reads mappings from ventoy/ventoy.json. A mapping identifies the ISO path and the persistence-image path. A minimal example is:

{"persistence":[{"image":"/ISO/debian-live.iso","backend":"/persistence/debian-rw.img"}]}
Use the paths and JSON structure required by the Ventoy version you installed, and replace the example names with the exact case-sensitive paths on your USB. The image must be paired with the ISO it was designed to support; mapping a file to a different ISO does not convert that ISO into a persistent system.
Select the mapped entry
Boot the USB and select the ISO. When Ventoy detects a valid mapping and the ISO supports persistence, its menu provides a persistence choice. Select that entry rather than the ordinary ISO entry. If no persistence choice appears, treat that as a compatibility or mapping problem, not as evidence that the image is being used automatically.
Verify packages, Wi-Fi, and files
Ventoy describes persistence as retaining packages, Wi-Fi profiles, and files across reboots of a supported Linux live ISO. Test each category you care about: create a file, connect to a wireless network and allow the profile to be saved, and install a small package if the live system permits package installation. Reboot using the mapped persistence entry and confirm the changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat can persist—and what remains temporary
When the overlay is active and has free space, it can retain:
- Personal files saved in persisted directories.
- Desktop, accessibility, and application preferences.
- Network profiles, including saved Wi-Fi settings when the live system allows them to be written.
- Configuration changes covered by the overlay or by your Debian
persistence.confrules. - Installed packages and their configuration on live systems that support package persistence.
Persistence does not turn the ISO into a conventional full-disk installation. The read-only base is still loaded at each boot, and the writable layer can become full, corrupted, or incompatible after a major ISO change. Files outside a selective persistence rule remain temporary. Hardware-dependent state may also fail to carry cleanly between computers.
Encryption and protection of saved data
A removable persistent USB can expose your files and saved network credentials if someone can read the drive. Debian live-boot documents optional LUKS-encrypted persistence. Encryption support, the required setup, and the password prompt depend on the selected live configuration. Enable encryption only through the method supported by your distribution and test unlocking before relying on it.
Encryption protects the persistence store while it is locked; it does not make the running live session anonymous or protect data after you unlock it. Use strong, memorable credentials and keep a backup of irreplaceable files somewhere other than the USB.

- Boot the USB using the explicit persistence entry or parameter.
- Create a text file with a distinctive name in the directory you expect to persist.
- Change one setting, such as the desktop theme or keyboard layout.
- If package retention matters, install a small package and record its name.
- Shut down cleanly, remove and reinsert the USB, and boot the same persistence path.
- Check the file, setting, and package. If any item is missing, stop and fix the boot selection or mapping before copying important data.
This is a recommended verification procedure, not a guarantee that every application or hardware-specific change will persist. Test after changing the ISO, resizing the persistence store, or updating the live-boot components.

Troubleshoot a USB that starts fresh every time
The persistence option is missing
Confirm that the ISO documents persistence. Ventoy can display a persistence option only for supported ISO implementations; a persistence image cannot add support where the ISO has none. For a distribution writer, check whether the release actually created a writable/casper store or only wrote a read-only image.
The option appears, but changes disappear
- Reboot again and make sure you selected the persistence entry, not the ordinary live entry.
- Check the partition label, file name, and directory paths expected by that release.
- For Ventoy, verify that
ventoy/ventoy.jsonnames the exact ISO and the exact persistence-image path, including capitalization. - For Debian, confirm that
persistence.confis on the persistence medium and that its rules cover the directory you tested. - Check free space. A full image or partition can prevent new files, settings, and package metadata from being written.
Packages fail to install
Inspect free space in the persistence store and the live system’s package-manager errors. Package caches and dependency data can consume more room than a few personal files. If the store is full, back up your data and enlarge it using the distribution’s supported procedure; do not resize a live image blindly.
Ventoy maps the wrong image
Make sure the backend image was created for the same ISO family and release. A valid-looking JSON file can still point to the wrong pair. Remove duplicate mappings while testing, use simple paths without unexpected spelling differences, and confirm that the persistence entry corresponds to the ISO you selected.
The USB boots on one computer but not another
Firmware mode, Secure Boot policy, graphics hardware, Wi-Fi adapters, and distribution support differ between computers. Try the same USB in the same firmware mode, review Secure Boot requirements for the ISO, and test whether the problem is booting, graphics initialization, or device access. Persistence cannot solve a kernel or firmware incompatibility.
Manage space, backups, and updates
Watch the writable layer
Keep free space available for routine writes. Large downloads, package caches, browser profiles, and logs can silently consume the overlay. Delete unneeded files from the live session and clear caches using the distribution’s normal tools, taking care not to remove files you intend to preserve.
Back up the persistence data
A persistence image or partition is a single point of failure. Copy important documents and configuration backups to another disk. If you need a complete image backup, unmount the persistence store before copying it so the file system is in a consistent state, and restore only to a destination with the required capacity.
Treat ISO upgrades as compatibility changes
Replacing an ISO while keeping an old persistence image can fail when the live-boot implementation, directory layout, or package base changes. Test a new ISO with a fresh persistence store first. Keep the old ISO and its working store until you have confirmed that the new pair boots, unlocks if encrypted, and retains the data you need.

Use persistence when you need a portable Linux workspace, a troubleshooting environment with saved utilities, or a disposable system that retains a controlled set of files and settings between sessions. Debian’s selective rules are useful when you want only specific directories to survive. Ventoy is practical when one USB must hold several supported live images.
Choose a full installation to internal storage when you need maximum performance, extensive software, reliable upgrades, or a large continuously changing data set. A persistent live USB remains constrained by flash-drive speed, finite writable capacity, and differences between computers. Its strength is portability and reversibility, not replacing every property of an installed operating system.
Decision checklist
- One Ubuntu-family ISO: start with the distribution’s writer and its persistence option, if that release provides one.
- Debian Live with selected directories: use a Debian-compatible persistence medium and define the paths in
persistence.conf. - Several live ISOs: install Ventoy, keep each ISO and persistence image on the data partition, and map only supported pairs in
ventoy/ventoy.json. - Confidential files: use the live system’s supported encrypted-persistence method and maintain an external backup.
- Any setup: test a file and a setting across a clean reboot before trusting the USB.
Bottom line
A persistent Linux live USB is a live ISO plus a writable overlay or persistence image, not a special kind of flash drive. Match the persistence convention to the exact ISO, select the persistence boot path, size the writable store for your files and packages, and verify the result after reboot. Ubuntu-family writable/casper storage, Debian’s persistence.conf, and Ventoy’s ISO-to-image mapping solve the same user problem in different, non-interchangeable ways.
