The steps below teach the custom build, because it is the approach most people mean by “making” a mansion. A section further down explains how renovating a generated mansion differs, so you do not confuse the two.
Decide which kind of mansion you are making
“Mansion” covers two different projects in Minecraft:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A custom mansion is a structure you plan and build from raw blocks. You choose the location, footprint, floor count, palette, and room layout.
- A generated woodland mansion is a large building the game creates on its own. Minecraft Help describes it as a structure found in dark forest biomes, and Minecraft’s official article also covers mansions in pale garden biomes. You do not place it; you find it, clear it, and renovate it.
Pick one before you start gathering materials. A custom build is a construction project. A generated mansion is a renovation project with its own hazards.
Build a custom mansion, step by step
Work through these stages in order. Each one is a decision you can adjust without starting over, as long as you do the planning before placing blocks.
#1 Best Overall
- MINECRAFT TOY FOR KIDS – LEGO Minecraft Zombie Dungeon (21587) building toy for boys and girls ages 8 years old and up
- 5 LEGO FIGURES – Builders can cast a Wastelands Wanderer minifigure, a slime and 3 zombies (including one with enchanted leggings and gold sword and one with diamond helmet) in their pretend play adventure stories
- GAMING-INSPIRED FUNCTIONS – Set in the Minecraft desert biome, this zombie dungeon features a rotating, zombie-spawning chamber and a sliding piece that triggers a rockfall
- INSPIRE CREATIVE STORYTELLING – The Wastelands Wanderer, equipped with a diamond pickaxe, mace and netherite armor, takes on a slime and 3 zombies in the desert biome dungeon
- ACCESSORIES FOR PRETEND PLAY – Features netherite armor, a mace, diamond pickaxe, gold sword, diamond helmet, crafting table, torch and a chest containing bread, bone and rotten flesh
- Choose a site and sketch a footprint. Pick a flat or gently sloped area with room to spare on every side. Sketch the outline on paper or in a flat-view mockup, and decide how many floors and wings the design needs before you touch the world.
- Mark the entrance and main hall first. Place the central entrance and the main hall on your sketch before dividing the rest of the space. Everything else radiates from these two spaces, so changing them later means rebuilding most of the plan.
- Choose a small, cohesive palette. Limit yourself to a handful of block types that look good together. Section below gives one creator’s example inventory. Your own palette should follow your build’s style, not a copied list.
- Build the foundation and exterior supports. Lay the foundation, then raise the outer walls and any columns or supports that will carry upper floors. Keep the walls at a consistent height so the silhouette reads from a distance.
- Build the floors and interior walls. Add each floor, then the walls that divide it into rooms. Leave openings where you planned doorways so the circulation path matches your sketch.
- Add windows, roof shape, balconies, and trim. Do these after the main silhouette is clear. Windows and roof changes are the easiest parts to revise once the massing is right.
- Furnish the rooms and add lighting and landscaping. Use rooms that serve a purpose: bedrooms, storage, farms, a map room, or a workshop. Official guidance describes these room types in woodland mansions and encourages adapting rooms to the player’s needs. Add lighting so interiors are not dark, and finish the grounds with paths, gardens, or walls around the site.
A palette example, not a template
A wooden-mansion tutorial on video uses one inventory for its build: stripped spruce logs, spruce planks, dark oak logs and stairs, stone bricks, slabs, and glass. That list is one designer’s set of choices. It is a reasonable starting point for a dark-wood, stone-accented look, but it does not define what a mansion requires. Swap in the materials that suit your biome and style. The quantities the tutorial uses are specific to its own layout and are not a general figure, so do not plan your material count from them.
Renovate a generated woodland mansion
A generated mansion gives you the shell and the room variety for free, but it is not a safe place to start building. The official Minecraft article notes that vindicators and evokers inhabit these mansions and that other hostile mobs can spawn in the dark interior. In Survival, clear the building before you remodel it.

- MINECRAFT ACTION FIGURE – Kids construct every detail of the Creeper, from its 4 poseable legs to its detachable head
- HIDDEN SURPRISE INSIDE – Builders can remove the Creeper's head to reveal a compartment that hides a first-version Creeper minifigure and TNT element

Find and assess the structure
Look for a mansion in a dark forest biome. Before you commit to renovating it, walk every floor and note which walls, stairs, and rooms you want to keep. A generated mansion’s layout is fixed, so the walls you remove are the only changes you can make to its interior plan without building new space.
Clear the hostile occupants first
Deal with vindicators, evokers, and any other hostile mobs before you open walls or start furnishing. Light the interior and check dark corners and upper floors. Only begin remodeling once the building is clear and you can move through it safely.

- REBUILD AND REPLAY – After the explosive action, young builders can reconstruct the TNT-shaped jungle house for endless pretend play adventures
- GIFT IDEA FOR BOYS & GIRLS – Makes an exciting birthday or any-time treat for kids who love Minecraft, building toys, and interactive play
Resize rooms and extend the building
The official article says you can customize a generated mansion to your own needs by removing interior walls to make larger rooms, or by building extensions to add new spaces. Make your changes in the same order as a custom build: plan the new footprint, then the entrances, then the room divisions, and finish with furnishings and lighting.
Compare the two approaches
| Factor | Custom mansion built from scratch | Renovated generated woodland mansion |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Wherever you choose | Where the game generated it, in dark forest or pale garden biomes |
| Footprint and layout | Set by your plan | Set by the generated structure; you can remove interior walls or build extensions |
| Materials | You gather and choose every block | The existing structure is the starting point; no general material count is established in the reviewed sources |
| Room flexibility | Full control over every room | Varied existing rooms, adjustable by removing walls or adding extensions |
| Main risk | Poor planning that forces rebuilds | Hostile mobs inside the structure in Survival |
| Best suited to | Players who want a construction project from the ground up | Players who want a renovation and can clear a dangerous building first |
Neither approach is always faster or cheaper. The result depends on the world, the game mode, and the design you choose.

Save and reuse a structure on Bedrock Edition
On Bedrock Edition, structure blocks and the /structure command can save a finished build as a structure and load it again elsewhere. This is useful if you want to reuse a room layout or rebuild a design in another world. The workflow is documented by Microsoft Learn, and it applies only to Bedrock Edition. It is optional; you can build a mansion in any edition without it.

What the evidence does and does not establish
- There is no single correct mansion size, floor plan, palette, or block count. Any dimensions or quantities you see in a tutorial describe that tutorial’s design.
- The official article supports customizing and extending a generated mansion. It does not establish how much time or material either approach takes.
- The hazards described for generated mansions come from the official article. The reviewed sources do not describe how often those mobs spawn in a given mansion.
