You can make a GIF on a Samsung Galaxy phone from photos already in Gallery, a burst of photos, or a moment you capture with Camera. On compatible S Pen devices, Smart Select can also turn part of a playing video into a GIF. The right method depends on what you want to animate, and menu names and availability vary by model and software version.

Samsung documents all four routes, but does not provide an exhaustive model-by-model compatibility list. If a setting or command is missing, its availability may depend on your device and software.

Make a GIF from photos in Gallery
- Open Gallery and find the images you want to include.
- Touch and hold one image, then select the other photos to add.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then choose Create and GIF. Depending on the menu version, the command may instead appear directly as Create GIF.
- Review the animation, make any edits you want, and tap Save.
Open the saved file in Gallery to view it. Samsung’s instructions for this workflow show different menu labels in different regional support materials, so follow the wording displayed on your phone rather than expecting one identical path on every Galaxy.

Turn burst shots into a GIF
A burst is a sequence of photos taken quickly in succession. Samsung says a GIF made from burst shots may look smoother than one assembled from separate images.

- Open Camera, select Photo mode, and swipe down on the shutter button. Keep it pressed or swiping as the camera takes the sequence, then release to stop.
- Open the burst image in Gallery.
- Tap More, choose GIF, review or edit the animation, and tap Save.
If swiping the shutter creates a GIF instead of taking a burst, open Camera → Settings → Swipe Shutter button to and select Take Burst Shot, if that option is available on your device.

For a moment you want to record as it happens, configure the shutter swipe to create a GIF rather than a burst.

- In Camera, open Settings.
- Tap Swipe Shutter button to, then select Create GIF.
- Return to the camera. Swipe down on the shutter to begin capturing and release when you want the GIF to end.
Samsung documents this setting in support guidance and in the Galaxy S23 FE manual, but camera options differ by device and software. If Create GIF is not listed, check the Camera settings available for your specific model.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series manual describes capturing an area of a playing video as a GIF with S Pen Smart Select. This route is limited to devices that support the relevant S Pen features; it should not be treated as a universal Galaxy option.

- Open the S Pen Air command panel and tap Smart Select.
- Choose the capture tool, then position and resize the selection frame around the video area you want.
- Make sure the video is playing and tap Record. The screen displays the maximum capture duration.
- Tap Stop when you have captured the section, then use the available option to save, share, copy, or pin the GIF.
Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series manual states that sound is not recorded when capturing an area from a video. This method creates a silent animation, not a video clip with audio.

Depending on the creation route and software, Samsung Gallery’s GIF tools can include trimming, speed adjustment, orientation and aspect-ratio changes, drawings, text, and stickers. Check the preview before saving so the animation starts and ends where you intend.

An older Samsung UK guide describes a separate route through Stories → options → Create GIF, with editing controls for ratio, speed, direction, and decorations. That guide, updated in 2020, says its Stories workflow supports up to 50 images. Because it refers to an older, specific interface, treat it as a possible legacy route rather than a guaranteed current menu or limit.

If a GIF option is missing
- Check whether the action is under More, Create, or a three-dot menu; Gallery labels vary across Samsung’s documented interfaces.
- In Camera settings, distinguish Create GIF from Take Burst Shot. The shutter swipe performs the action selected in that setting.
- For Smart Select, confirm that your exact Galaxy model supports the required S Pen features.
- Consult current support information for your model if the option is absent. Samsung’s guidance warns that menus and screenshots can differ by device and software; it does not establish a universal minimum One UI version for these workflows.
