A functional kirigami pop-up card is one that rises when opened and collapses far enough to close without tearing, buckling or catching on its own decorations. You can make a beginner version from one sheet by combining carefully marked cuts with scored folds. The reliable sequence is: choose a simple pattern, distinguish cuts from folds, score before creasing, cut with controlled passes, shape the mechanism gradually, and test its motion before decorating.
What makes a kirigami pop-up card functional?
Kirigami combines cutting and folding. In a simple one-sheet card, the pop-up section remains connected to the original sheet: cuts create tabs or steps, and folds turn those connected areas into a three-dimensional form. When the card opens, the sheet’s geometry pushes the form upward; when it closes, the folds must reverse without colliding.

That is different from an attached parallel or box-fold mechanism. A box-fold pop-up uses a separate folded strip or box, usually fixed to opposite panels of the card. Opening the card pulls the mechanism’s ends apart, causing the folded structure to rise; closing the card collapses it between the panels. Both approaches are valid paper engineering, but they require different assembly decisions.
- One-sheet kirigami: cuts and folds are made in the card sheet itself, so there may be no separate part to glue.
- Attached box fold: a folded strip or box is made separately and glued across the card’s center crease or to opposing panels.
- Functional test: the card should open smoothly, reach its intended raised shape, and close sufficiently flat before you add decoration.
There is no universal cardstock weight or finish that works for every design. Paper choice depends on the size, number of folds, cut complexity and amount of decoration, so prototype the mechanism with the paper you intend to use.

Tools and materials
Start with the simplest kit that lets you mark, score and cut accurately. Household paper and scissors can be enough for a basic practice model; a cutting mat, ruler and craft knife improve control on detailed templates.
| Item | Purpose | When it matters most |
|---|---|---|
| Cardstock or card | Provides the base and, for a one-sheet project, the pop-up element itself. | Use the same stock for your prototype and final card when possible. |
| Second sheet or scraps | Provides a separate strip or box for an attached parallel-fold design, or test pieces for cuts. | Useful when the mechanism is not cut from the base sheet. |
| Cutting mat | Protects the work surface and supports controlled knife cuts. | Essential for hand-cut templates and precise straight cuts. |
| Ruler | Guides straight scores and knife cuts and helps align the card fold. | Use it whenever a line must remain straight or repeated. |
| Craft knife | Makes precise straight template cuts. | Best for detailed patterns; use scissors for simple shapes. |
| Scissors | Handles uncomplicated cuts and trimming. | A practical choice for a first step tab or broad outline. |
| Rounded scoring stylus, embossing point or bone folder | Indents fold lines so the paper bends predictably without being cut through. | Score every planned fold before making a sharp crease. |
| Glue stick | Attaches a separate box-fold mechanism to opposing card panels. | Optional for one-sheet kirigami; required only when your chosen design has separate parts. |
A scoring tool should be rounded or blunt enough to indent the sheet rather than slice it. Do not substitute a sharp blade for scoring unless you deliberately want a cut line.
Choose a beginner structure
Start with a one-step kirigami template
A printable one-step template is the most controlled starting point because the cut and fold geometry is already laid out. The Papercraft-3D beginner template specifies an open card size of 160 × 200 mm and instructs you to print at 100% scale. Those dimensions apply to that particular template, not to pop-up cards generally. Disable “fit to page” or similar printer scaling if you need the printed pattern to retain its stated dimensions.

If the template uses a legend, preserve it when transferring the pattern to card. If you redraw it, use visibly different markings, such as solid lines for cuts and dashed or otherwise distinct lines for folds.
Use a simple step or tab when drawing your own pattern
A rectangular step is easier to align and test than freeform geometry. Keep the first design compact enough that the card can close around it. Make the center fold of the base clear, then place the step’s cuts symmetrically or deliberately offset them while leaving enough uncut paper to keep the structure attached.
Move to a box fold when you want a separate platform
An attached parallel or box fold is useful when you want a box-like platform, a larger raised panel or a mechanism that can be replaced independently of the card base. It adds assembly and gluing steps, so it is not identical to the one-sheet kirigami method. The two ends of the folded structure must be fixed to opposite card panels so the card’s opening motion drives the rise.

Mark cuts and folds before touching the blade
Accurate marking prevents the most common beginner error: cutting a line that was intended to be folded. Work on a flat surface and identify every line before you score or cut.
- Establish the card’s center fold. Align the two halves of the base carefully. A crooked center crease changes the angle of every connected fold.
- Transfer the pattern. Use a printed template or a measured guide. Keep the pattern in the correct orientation relative to the card opening.
- Separate line types visually. Mark cuts and folds with different line styles or colors. Do not rely on memory once several lines intersect.
- Check attachment points. Every part that must rise needs to remain connected where the design requires it. A stray cut can detach a tab permanently.
- Confirm the collapse path. Mentally fold the card shut and look for decorations, tabs or walls that would cross the center crease or collide.
For a template printed on ordinary paper, you can place it over the card and transfer the lines with a blunt point, or redraw the pattern directly onto the cardstock. Keep the marks light enough that they do not become unwanted visible lines on the finished card.
Score fold lines before creasing
Scoring creates a controlled hinge. Place the card on a firm, protected surface, align a ruler with the fold line, and run a rounded stylus along the guide. The goal is a visible indentation, not a cut. The Ullagami instructions specifically caution that the point should indent the card without cutting through it.
- Put the sheet on a cutting mat or another surface that supports the paper.
- Hold the ruler firmly against the marked fold line.
- Run the rounded scoring tool along the ruler with steady, moderate pressure.
- Lift the ruler and inspect the score from both sides.
- Repeat for every straight fold before making any sharp creases.
On a small scrap of the same paper, test the pressure first. If the tool leaves a slit, reduce pressure or use a more rounded point. If the score is barely visible, make another controlled pass rather than pressing hard enough to damage the sheet.
Cut the pattern safely and cleanly
Use scissors for broad, uncomplicated cuts. For a detailed printable template, a craft knife and ruler give straighter edges, but they require a cutting mat and deliberate control.
- Place the marked sheet fully on the cutting mat.
- Align the ruler with the cut line and keep fingers away from the knife’s path.
- Make a light pass with the craft knife rather than forcing the blade through the stock.
- Repeat the light passes until the cut is complete. Multiple controlled passes generally leave a cleaner edge than one heavily forced stroke.
- Rotate the paper or reposition the ruler for the next segment instead of twisting your wrist around a difficult angle.
- For internal openings, cut only the lines identified as cuts and leave every required hinge intact.
Test a short cut on scrap before committing to the final sheet. Ragged edges, crushed corners or a blade that drags through the fibers are signs to change the pressure, angle or cutting approach. Replace or reposition the sheet rather than trying to force a resistant cut.

Keep the blade capped or retracted when it is not in use. A craft knife is not necessary for every project; scissors are often the safer and faster choice for a simple step tab.
Shape the pop-up gradually
After cutting, open the card and begin guiding the scored lines into their intended mountain and valley directions. “Mountain” and “valley” describe which side of the paper becomes the outside or inside of the crease; follow the orientation shown by your template.
- Open the base slowly. Do not snap the center fold or pull the pop-up away from its hinges.
- Start with the primary folds. Bend the large step, tab or platform along its scored lines.
- Support nearby hinges. Use a finger or a flat tool to guide connected sections while the mechanism begins to move.
- Work in sequence. Fold dependent sections progressively instead of forcing every line to a sharp 90-degree angle at once.
- Cycle the card. Open it partway, then farther, and close it again to let the folds settle into their path.
Complex geometric kirigami folds can depend on one another. Forcing each crease individually into a perfect right angle can stress the paper, cause buckling or make the final motion less reliable. Let the linked folds find their intended angles as the card opens.

How the two common mechanisms differ
| Characteristic | One-sheet kirigami step | Attached parallel or box fold |
|---|---|---|
| Where the pop-up comes from | Cut and folded areas remain part of the base sheet. | A separate folded strip or box is attached to the card. |
| Added materials | Usually none beyond the card sheet. | Usually a second sheet or scrap plus glue. |
| Assembly | Mark, score, cut and shape the original sheet. | Fold the mechanism, position both ends and glue them to opposite panels. |
| Shape options | Efficient for steps, tabs and forms integrated into the card. | Useful for box-like platforms and raised structures with a separate footprint. |
| Collapse behavior | Depends on the connected cuts and fold directions in the base. | The attached ends move toward one another as the card closes, collapsing the box. |
| Standardized performance data | Not established for general kirigami cards. | Not established for general box-fold cards. |
Paper-engineering lessons also describe V-fold and box-fold approaches in which opening the card pulls a tab or rotates a component. These are alternative mechanisms, not requirements for a basic one-sheet kirigami card.
Build an attached box-fold version
If you choose the separate mechanism, make the card base and folded strip from compatible paper first. The folded piece must span the intended distance between the two card panels without forcing the base apart.
- Fold the strip or box along its scored lines, keeping its ends parallel.
- Close the card base and position the mechanism across the center area so it will collapse inside the card.
- Open the card slightly and check that the ends move apart symmetrically.
- Apply glue to the attachment areas at the two ends, following the layout of your chosen design.
- Fix one end to one card panel, let it hold, then align and attach the opposite end to the other panel.
- Close the card while the adhesive sets, checking that the mechanism is not shifted off-center.
- Open and close it repeatedly after the glue has set enough to hold, correcting alignment before adding any decoration.
The exact attachment location depends on the box geometry. Do not assume that a box can be glued directly over the center crease; its ends need to travel with the opposing panels rather than block the hinge.

Test function before decorating
Decoration adds stiffness, thickness and weight, so test the bare mechanism first. Open the card slowly from closed to fully open, then close it without pressing the panels together.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Add decoration without blocking movement
Apply decoration only after the pop-up passes the motion test. Keep embellishments clear of hinges, cut edges and the path followed as the card closes. Attach flat pieces to stable surfaces rather than spanning a fold unless the design specifically calls for a flexible joint.
There is no established safe maximum decoration weight for these mechanisms. Use a small test piece of the same paper and decoration, then cycle the card again. If the added layer makes the card sag, catches on the opposite panel or prevents closure, reduce its size, move it to a more stable area or use a lighter material.
For a box-fold card, decorate the separate platform only after its glued attachments have been checked. A large panel placed across the box’s moving faces can stop the box from collapsing even when the underlying mechanism is correct.

The fold wanders away from the marked line
Re-score the line with a ruler before attempting another crease. Keep the ruler aligned to the original mark and support the sheet so it does not slide. If the first score is visibly displaced, do not keep deepening it; transfer the pattern to a fresh sheet if the error changes the mechanism’s geometry.

The paper tears or buckles
Stop forcing the folds into isolated right angles. Reopen the card slightly and guide the interdependent folds together in smaller movements. Check whether a cut has accidentally extended into a hinge or whether the paper was weakened by an overly deep score.
The card will not close flat
Check three practical causes in order:
- Look for a reversed mountain or valley fold that sends a tab into the wrong side of the card.
- Check whether the mechanism or a glued box is off-center and colliding with the opposite panel.
- Remove or reposition any decoration that crosses the collapse path.
Make each adjustment with the card partly open, then cycle it slowly rather than pressing it shut.
The cut edge is ragged
Use a cutting mat, keep the ruler steady and make several light knife passes instead of one forceful pass. For a simple outline, switch to sharp scissors and turn the paper through the curve. Test the method on a scrap of the final stock first.

Compare the two sides of the mechanism for mirrored scores, unequal cuts or a shifted center fold. In an attached box fold, verify that both ends are glued at corresponding positions on opposite panels. Uneven attachment points can make an otherwise symmetrical structure lean.

Inspect the added layers for thickness at the hinges and weight on the raised section. Trim pieces that cross moving joints, relocate them to fixed panels, or test a lighter paper. Retest the entire open-close cycle after every change.
A repeatable beginner workflow
- Select one simple structure. Use a one-step template or a basic tab before attempting freeform geometry.
- Confirm dimensions and print scale. For the Papercraft-3D template, use the stated 160 × 200 mm open size and 100% print setting.
- Fold and align the base. Make the center crease accurate before transferring the rest of the pattern.
- Mark cuts and folds separately. Inspect every intersection and preserve required hinges.
- Score all folds. Guide a rounded tool with a ruler; indent, do not cut through.
- Cut only the cut lines. Use scissors for simple work or controlled knife passes on a mat for precise templates.
- Shape the mechanism progressively. Follow the intended mountain and valley directions without forcing dependent folds independently.
- Test the bare card. Confirm that it rises and collapses before adding glue or decoration.
- Decorate lightly. Keep moving parts and collapse paths clear, then test again.
Planning beyond the first card
Once a simple step works, change one variable at a time: the height of the step, the width of a tab, the position of a fold or the paper used. Keeping the rest of the design constant makes it easier to identify why a new version buckles or refuses to close.
For more involved designs, preview the motion on a paper mock-up before committing to a final sheet. Digital pop-up design tools and paper-engineering lessons commonly treat the card as a moving system rather than a flat illustration: the opening action, hinge positions and clearance all need to agree. A visually attractive form that cannot collapse is not a finished pop-up mechanism.

Keep a working prototype and a failed prototype side by side. The failed version can reveal whether the problem came from a wandering score, an over-cut hinge, an unsuitable fold direction or decoration placed in the wrong path. Record the paper type and print scale with each pattern so successful dimensions can be reproduced.
