The right steps—and whether the phone is still receiving official security patches—depend on its generation.
Protect the battery with everyday charging habits
Fairphone recommends keeping the charge between 20% and 80% when practical. Repeatedly keeping a lithium-ion battery at 100% or letting it fall to 1% can harm its long-term health. These are care guidelines, not a promise of a particular lifespan. See Fairphone’s battery-care guidance.

- Keep the phone out of direct sun and away from other heat sources. Do not put it in a refrigerator or freezer.
- In freezing weather, carry it in a pocket rather than exposing it to the cold.
- For extended storage, leave the battery at room temperature with at least 50% charge.
Fairphone says a battery more than two years old, one that suddenly charges poorly, or one that has expanded may be nearing the end of its life. Age alone does not prove it needs replacement; if charging has changed, contact support for diagnosis before buying a battery.
If the battery looks swollen
Do not charge a battery you suspect is swollen. Power down the phone and remove the battery only if it can be done safely. Do not ship a swollen battery; contact your municipality about local chemical-recycling options, or seek appropriate support. Fairphone describes a spin test as one clue to swelling, but do not use a test as a reason to charge or handle a suspect battery unsafely.

Use a charger and cable that fit your Fairphone
Charging compatibility varies by model, so do not choose a charger by wattage alone. Fairphone’s model-by-model charging guide gives the applicable cable and charger requirements. For newer models, it recommends a high-quality USB-C-to-USB-C cable rated at least 60 W (20 V, 3 A), together with either a USB Power Delivery charger with PPS rated at least 30 W (9 V, 3 A) or Quick Charge 4.0 or newer. Fairphone 3(+), Fairphone 2, and other models have different guidance; check the relevant model entry.
A battery normally charges more slowly above 80%, which Fairphone says helps extend battery life. If charging is unexpectedly slow, check that the charger and cable meet your model’s requirements, try a wall outlet instead of a laptop, and clear dust or lint from the USB port with compressed air. Fairphone 5 owners can also check whether Fast Charge is selected.

Diagnose before replacing a part
Start with the exact model and the symptom: a battery that drains quickly, a damaged screen, a loose charging connection, and a phone that no longer receives updates call for different decisions. Fairphone recommends diagnosing the fault before purchasing parts. A fault may be covered by warranty, repairable at home, or better assessed by a service centre.

- Check whether the phone is still under warranty and ask Fairphone Customer Support if the fault may be covered.
- Use a repair guide and parts intended for your exact model. Fairphone says parts are not interchangeable across phone generations because dimensions, voltage ranges, connectors, and firmware can differ.
- After a severe fall or water damage, seek professional assessment rather than assuming a module swap will solve the problem.
- Check local availability of service and compatible parts before deciding between DIY and a repair centre.
Fairphone’s repair page links to repair guides, spare parts, and service options. Its warranty overview says DIY repair does not necessarily void coverage, but your applicable warranty terms are binding; verify them for your device and region.

What you need for a Gen. 6 or Gen. 6+ DIY repair
Fairphone documents user replacement of the battery, display, top unit, cameras/earpiece, loudspeaker, and USB-C port on the Fairphone (Gen. 6) and Gen. 6+. Its replacement guide calls for a Torx T5 screwdriver, a clean, well-lit workspace, containers for screws, and a plastic card or pick.
- Install available software updates before opening the phone. Fairphone says updated software includes firmware drivers needed for the device to recognize replacement parts.
- Check warranty coverage with Customer Support before buying a part if the repair might be covered.
- Follow the guide for the exact device and replacement module, keeping screws organized as you work.
- If the phone has severe impact or water damage, get a professional assessment instead of proceeding on the assumption that a DIY replacement is appropriate.
These instructions apply to Gen. 6/Gen. 6+ only; use a separate guide for Fairphone 5, 4, 3(+), or 2.

Install updates—and check whether your model still gets them
Updates can improve security and privacy as well as add operating-system features. Fairphone says software longevity is part of keeping a phone useful; its software-longevity page states: “When it comes to longer-lasting phones, our repairable design often gets all the glory. But software is just as important in keeping our phones working well for the long term.” Install updates available for your device and check Fairphone’s support roadmap for the latest model-specific status. These are Fairphone’s stated plans and commitments, not a guarantee that every app or carrier feature will remain compatible. Fairphone warns that 3/3+ devices lack official patches and advises against using them for banking, sensitive communications, or internet-dependent tasks. Community ROMs may exist, but Fairphone does not officially maintain them. If you keep using one, weigh the remaining practical uses against the security risk rather than treating repairability as a substitute for security support.

Decide whether to repair or replace
Repair is most compelling when diagnosis points to a single replaceable module, the correct part or service is available, and the phone still meets your app, network, and security needs. Compare these factors before spending money:
- Exact model and availability of a verified compatible spare part.
- Remaining official security-update window for that model.
- Whether the fault is isolated or may involve damage to other components.
- Warranty coverage and repair-service availability in your region.
- The cost of a compatible part and tools versus a service repair.
- Whether the repaired phone will continue to support the apps and network features you rely on.
Do not assume a part listed for a different Fairphone generation will fit, or that a replacement battery will resolve a charging fault before it is diagnosed. Fairphone’s device-care and longevity resources collect model-specific maintenance information.
