A digital estate plan is a current inventory of your online accounts, a decision for what should happen to each one, provider-specific legacy settings, legally appropriate authorization, and secure instructions for the people you appoint. Make those parts agree with one another. Listing an account in a will does not automatically transfer it, give an executor its password, or authorize access to private messages.
What happens to online accounts when you die?
The result depends on the account contract, the provider’s legacy tools, applicable state law, and the instructions you left. The Uniform Law Commission describes the Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA) this way: “The Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA) governs access to a person’s online accounts when the account owner dies or loses the ability to manage the account.” RUFADAA is a uniform model act, not a single federal rule. States enact and modify it, so the law in your state and the facts of your situation control.

RUFADAA generally distinguishes digital property from the content of electronic communications. A fiduciary such as an executor, trustee, conservator, or agent under a power of attorney may have authority to manage property, files, web domains, or virtual currency. Access to email, text messages, and social-media communications is more restricted unless you gave consent in an applicable record and local law permits the access. An appointment as executor or agent therefore does not, by itself, require a provider to hand over passwords or every message.
Provider tools can be more specific than a general will. They may activate after a period of inactivity, require proof of death, or limit a designee to managing a memorialized profile. Treat every feature as a current service policy rather than a permanent guarantee; providers can change eligibility, interfaces, and exclusions.

Start with a complete digital-asset inventory
Use a worksheet or secure document to identify the account, what it is used for, what you want done, and where the authorized person can find the detailed instructions. The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) specifically identifies personal email, social media, cloud storage, websites and domains, online financial accounts, and cryptocurrency as digital assets. Expand that list so ordinary accounts are not overlooked.
| Category | Examples to record | Decisions to make |
|---|---|---|
| Email and communications | Email addresses, messaging services, contact lists, archived correspondence | Preserve selected records, allow lawful access, export information, or close the account |
| Social media and communities | Profiles, groups, forums, creator pages, professional networks | Memorialize, appoint a platform contact, download permitted data, delete, or leave unchanged |
| Cloud files and photographs | Document storage, photo libraries, shared folders, backups | Transfer or share specific folders, preserve family records, or delete private material |
| Financial and payment accounts | Bank and investment portals, payment wallets, tax services, insurance portals | Identify the institution and legal owner, notify the fiduciary, and follow the institution’s estate process |
| Shopping and rewards | Retail accounts, loyalty points, gift-card balances, delivery services | Use or transfer value where the terms and law permit, or close the account |
| Subscriptions | News, software, storage, gaming, fitness, and other recurring services | Cancel recurring charges and preserve any data or licenses that have value |
| Websites and domains | Domain registrar, hosting, site administration, analytics, advertising, code repositories | Renew, transfer, archive, sell, or shut down the property; document renewal dates |
| Digital purchases | Apps, games, ebooks, films, music, downloadable software | Check whether the license is personal and non-transferable; preserve receipts and account history |
| Cryptocurrency and wallets | Exchange accounts, hardware wallets, seed phrases, recovery keys, multisignature arrangements | Document the legal owner, the fiduciary route, and the exact secure location of recovery material |
For each entry, capture the provider name, account identifier, purpose, ownership (personal, joint, business, or trust), recurring payment, important files, and the action you want: preserve, memorialize, close, delete, or transfer where permitted. Do not put raw passwords or seed phrases in a worksheet that could be emailed, printed, or filed with a will. Instead, record a precise pointer to the protected location where the authorized person can obtain them.
Separate the people who do different jobs
One person may be best suited to pay bills and administer property, while another should receive family photographs or handle a memorialized profile. Name people by task rather than assuming one “digital executor” can do everything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Property fiduciary: An executor, trustee, conservator, or attorney-in-fact who handles lawful administration, bills, taxes, domains, and other property.
- Personal-content recipient: A person who should receive photographs, letters, videos, or other selected files.
- Social-profile contact: A person who understands your wishes for memorialization or deletion and can use the provider’s limited controls.
- Technical custodian: Someone able to operate the password manager, devices, backups, domain registrar, or wallet system without guessing.
Ask each appointee whether they understand the assignment and can act in the relevant jurisdiction. Tell them where the secure instructions are kept, but do not send complete credentials in ordinary email or text. If an account belongs to a business, confirm who owns it and whether a succession or operating agreement controls access.
Choose an outcome for every account
Preserve
Preservation is appropriate for tax records, family photographs, research, business files, domain registrations, and correspondence that has lasting value. Specify which folders or records matter and how long they should be retained. “Keep everything” is not a workable instruction when an account contains private material belonging to other people.

Memorialize
Some social platforms can convert a profile to a memorial state. That usually changes how the profile appears and restricts ordinary login activity; it does not give a designee unrestricted access to the account.
Close or delete
Identify accounts that should end, such as unused subscriptions, dating profiles, public-facing pages, or services containing sensitive information. Distinguish immediate deletion from deletion after a period in which the fiduciary can retrieve lawful records. A deletion request may be irreversible.

Transfer where permitted
Transfers are controlled by the provider’s terms and applicable law. A will can express your intent, but it cannot turn a personal, non-transferable license into inheritable property. Record receipts, renewal dates, and ownership documents so the fiduciary can determine what can legally move.
Configure provider controls while you can
The following examples illustrate three different designs: an inactivity trigger, a verified-death process, and a restricted memorial profile. Settings and regional availability can change, so check the provider’s current help documentation when you activate them.
| Provider tool | Trigger | What the designated person can do | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Inactive Account Manager | A period of account inactivity selected by the account holder | Notify up to ten chosen contacts and share all or selected data types | Some information is not shareable; Google does not provide passwords or other login details through a deceased-account request |
| Apple Legacy Contact | A request after the account holder’s death | Request eligible iCloud and account data using an access key and death certificate | Passwords, passkeys, iCloud Keychain information, and several purchased or licensed items are excluded; country or region affects documentation |
| Facebook legacy contact | The profile has been memorialized | Write a pinned post, respond to new friend requests, update profile and cover photos, download certain permitted shared information, or request deletion | Cannot log in, read private messages, change older posts, or remove friends |
Google: plan for inactivity, not password handover
Google describes Inactive Account Manager as “a way for users to share parts of their account data or notify someone if they’ve been inactive for a certain period of time.” In the account settings, choose the inactivity period, add up to ten recipients, select the data categories each recipient should receive, and decide whether the account should be deleted after the process. Use a notification address that will still be reachable if your primary phone or email is unavailable.

- Durable hardcover with concealed wire-o binding
- Archival, acid-free paper helps preserve your information.
Check the selected categories carefully. The tool is designed to share chosen data, not to grant a contact general account access. Google also provides a request route for a family member or representative after death. Google says it reviews those requests carefully and cannot provide passwords or other login details. Your plan should therefore identify lawful records to request and separately explain where authorized credentials or recovery information are secured.
Apple: create and protect the Legacy Contact access key
Apple’s Legacy Contact process requires the contact to have the access key you generated and a death certificate when requesting eligible data. Depending on the account and region, eligible material can include photos, messages, notes, files, and device backups. Apple lists purchased movies, music, books, subscriptions, and iCloud Keychain information—including passwords and passkeys—among the inaccessible data.
Give the access key to the named contact through a secure method and keep a second protected record of where it can be found. The access key is not a substitute for your estate documents, and it does not unlock every Apple service. Apple’s documentation and required documents vary by country or region, so confirm the process applicable to your account.
Facebook: decide between memorialization and deletion
A Facebook legacy contact can write a pinned post, respond to new friend requests, update the profile and cover photos, download certain shared information if the account setting permits, or request deletion of a memorialized account. The contact cannot log in, read private messages, change older posts, or remove friends. You can also choose in advance to have the account deleted after death. Set the preference that matches your wishes and tell the contact what tone and timing you want for any public post.
Coordinate the plan with your will, trust, and power of attorney
Take the inventory and provider choices to an estate-planning attorney licensed where you live. Ask about language that authorizes access to digital property and communications to the extent local law allows, and make sure the document names the correct fiduciaries. The American Bar Association explains that a representative’s access can depend on a provider’s online tool or express authorization in a will under applicable law.

Ask the attorney to address:
- Which fiduciary may manage digital property during incapacity and after death.
- Whether your state has enacted RUFADAA and what version or limitations apply.
- How consent to access electronic communications should be documented.
- Whether a trust, business agreement, joint ownership arrangement, or power of attorney changes the result.
- How cryptocurrency, domains, online businesses, and cross-border accounts should be handled.
Do not copy generic sample clauses into a document and assume they will work. A will may be filed in probate and become accessible to others, while the credentials needed to administer accounts should remain in a separate protected system. Your attorney can help make the documents and provider settings consistent without placing secrets in the public record.
Store credentials and recovery information safely
ACTEC recommends using a password manager and an emergency password kit. Choose a reputable system that supports an emergency-access or designated-contact process, then document the recovery route in your estate plan. The fiduciary needs to know how to reach the protected information, not necessarily to receive a printed list of every password.
- Keep raw passwords, device passcodes, cryptocurrency seed phrases, recovery keys, and backup codes out of a publicly filed will.
- Use separate instructions for the password manager, encrypted backups, hardware wallets, and two-factor authentication devices.
- Record where a physical emergency kit is stored and who may open it.
- Explain how to access a password manager without defeating its security or violating its terms.
- Identify devices that contain locally stored photographs or files and the lawful person who may handle them.
Google’s deceased-account process does not provide passwords or other login details. Apple’s Legacy Contact does not include passwords or passkeys stored in iCloud Keychain. Those exclusions make a secure credential location and clear legal authorization essential.

- Gather account evidence. Review your password manager, email receipts, bank statements, device settings, browser-saved accounts, domain invoices, and cryptocurrency records. Add every service to a master inventory.
- Classify ownership. Mark each item as personal, joint, business, trust-owned, or unclear. Resolve ownership questions before assigning an outcome.
- Record the desired action. For each account, choose preserve, memorialize, close, delete, or transfer where permitted. Note any deadline, renewal date, tax record, or family file.
- Assign responsibility. Name the property fiduciary, content recipient, profile contact, and technical custodian where those jobs differ. Confirm that each person accepts the role.
- Activate provider settings. Set Google Inactive Account Manager, create an Apple Legacy Contact and distribute the access key securely, and select Facebook memorialization or deletion preferences.
- Prepare legal documents. Give the inventory and provider confirmations to your attorney. Update the will, trust, and power of attorney as advised for your jurisdiction.
- Secure the operating instructions. Put passwords, passcodes, recovery keys, and seed phrases in the protected system you selected. Leave a locator and access procedure in the estate documents or a separate letter of instruction.
- Test the plan without exposing secrets. Ask the technical custodian to verify that the emergency-access route, device location, and provider contact details are understandable. Do not perform a live deletion or death claim as a test.
- Tell the people who need to act. Explain what each person is responsible for, where the instructions are stored, and which decisions require an attorney or provider review.
- Record the review date. Put the next review on your calendar and keep a change log so an outdated worksheet is not mistaken for the current plan.
Review after life changes and on a schedule
Review the inventory and settings after marriage, divorce, a move, the death or resignation of a fiduciary, creation of a business, acquisition of cryptocurrency, or opening an account with important records. Also review periodically even when nothing obvious changed. Confirm that contacts still have the right relationship, the secure-document location is accurate, recurring subscriptions are listed, and provider documentation still describes the same triggers and exclusions.

Common failure points and how to avoid them
“My executor is listed in the will, so they can log in.”
Not necessarily. The will establishes intent and may provide authorization under applicable law, but the provider’s terms, RUFADAA enactment, and the type of data still matter. Use the provider’s legacy tool where available and have an attorney address any remaining authority.
“I gave my relative the master password, so every account is covered.”
A master password does not resolve ownership, contractual restrictions, two-factor authentication, private-communications rules, or the risk of exposing other people’s information. Give the fiduciary a lawful access plan and a secure route to the credentials, not an informal promise to share everything.
“A memorialized profile lets the contact read messages.”
Facebook’s legacy-contact controls expressly do not permit reading private messages or logging in. Other platforms may impose different limits. Treat memorialization as a narrow management role, not a general account takeover.
“A cloud library or digital purchase can be inherited like a physical book.”
Some digital purchases are personal licenses rather than transferable property. Record what you own, preserve receipts, and ask the provider or attorney what can legally be transferred. Do not promise a beneficiary access that the license forbids.
“Cryptocurrency only needs a seed phrase.”
The fiduciary also needs to know who owns the wallet, what legal document governs it, how to avoid theft or loss, and whether an exchange, hardware wallet, multisignature arrangement, or business entity is involved. Keep recovery material offline or in the protected system you selected, and never place it in an unsecured worksheet.
When professional help is especially important
Consult a jurisdiction-qualified estate-planning attorney when the plan involves financial accounts, a business, cryptocurrency, valuable intellectual property, private communications, a blended family, incapacity planning, or assets in more than one country. Bring the account inventory and the provider settings so the attorney can reconcile the practical workflow with the documents. The legal answer can differ by state, account type, ownership structure, and whether the issue is death or incapacity.
