You can give a custom itinerary the clean, information-dense appearance of an airline document, but visual similarity does not create a reservation, ticket, boarding pass, or proof of travel. Put SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING at the top before adding any styling, use fictional or redacted personal data, and never submit the PDF where an airline, consulate, border officer, or other authority asks for genuine travel evidence. If you need a real document, check the current requirements of the authority and carrier involved and obtain the specific reservation or ticket they accept.
What a custom airline-style itinerary can—and cannot—do
A designed itinerary is a visual representation of a trip. It is useful for planning, sharing a proposed route, comparing schedules, classroom or training examples, and presentation work. It becomes misleading when its layout, codes, branding, or wording implies that an airline issued it or that a booking exists.

My Flight Itinerary’s acceptable-use policy, last updated September 6, 2026, says its sample documents are not confirmed airline bookings or valid documents for visa applications, border entry, or airline check-in. Treat that limitation as the baseline for any self-made design: a polished PDF remains a sample unless a real carrier or authorized seller actually created the underlying reservation or ticket.
Reservation, ticket, and boarding are separate states. A reservation may hold space or record a proposed itinerary; a ticket is an issued transportation document governed by a fare’s rules; a boarding pass is produced for check-in after the carrier accepts the passenger for a particular flight. A document that merely lists names, airports, and times does not move you from one state to another.

Start with an unmistakable mockup label
Add the status warning before choosing fonts, colors, or decorative elements. It should be visible at normal viewing size, not hidden in a footer or pale text. A practical wording is:
SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING
Place it in a contrasting band at the top and repeat a shorter status note near the itinerary details, such as Illustrative itinerary; no reservation created. The repetition is a readability aid, not a substitute for honest labeling. Do not call the file a “confirmed ticket,” “issued e-ticket,” or “boarding pass” in its filename, title, captions, or email subject.
If a client, class, or presentation requires a field that resembles a booking reference, label it Fictional placeholder — nonfunctional. Do not create a code that could be mistaken for a live PNR, ticket number, barcode, QR code, seat assignment, or security credential.

A high-contrast page with consistent alignment looks professional without copying a carrier’s identity. Use one page for a simple trip or a second page for notes and terms when the route is complex. Keep the status label prominent on every page.
Header and identity block
- Trip title: Use a neutral title such as “Proposed Europe itinerary” or “Conference travel plan.” Avoid wording that implies issuance.
- Passenger: For a private example, use fictional data or redact the surname, date of birth, and document numbers. Include only the information needed for the design purpose.
- Document status: Put the mockup warning in the header and a plain-language status note below the passenger block.
Route summary
- Show origin and destination with both city and airport names, for example “London (LHR) → Singapore (SIN).”
- Display local departure and arrival dates and times, and identify the time zone when a cross-border trip could cause confusion.
- Show the airline and flight number only when those details are real and relevant to the example. Otherwise write “illustrative carrier” or omit the field.
Segment cards
Give each flight its own row or card. A useful order is departure airport and time, flight number and carrier, arrival airport and time, date, and connection duration. Use a vertical divider, arrow, or separate card for each connection so the sequence cannot be misread.

Notes and assumptions
- State whether the times are local and whether the schedule is illustrative.
- Identify invented values as fictional rather than leaving a reader to infer that they are placeholders.
- Add practical planning notes—baggage assumptions, a train connection, or a meeting address—only if they are clearly separate from airline-issued information.
Fields to include without implying a live booking
The following checklist is inferred from itinerary descriptions that commonly show a passenger, route, dates, and airline; it is not a universal airline-ticket specification. Include a field only when it helps the reader understand the proposed trip.

How to build the itinerary step by step
- Define the purpose. Decide whether the page is for personal planning, a design portfolio, a classroom exercise, a presentation, or another non-travel-evidence use. The purpose determines how much personal data and schedule detail you need.
- Choose an editor and page size. A word processor, presentation editor, or layout application is sufficient. Select a plain page size that suits the intended screen or print use, and leave enough margin for the warning label to remain visible.
- Add the warning first. Insert “SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING” in a high-contrast header. Lock or group that element if the editor allows it so later styling cannot accidentally remove it.
- Create the information hierarchy. Put the trip title and passenger block at the top, the route summary next, and one segment card per flight below. Use consistent left edges, spacing, and alignment rather than decorative clutter.
- Enter route data carefully. Check the spelling of cities and airports, date order, local times, and the direction of travel. If any value is invented, label it fictional in the same area where it appears.
- Style for readability. Use one display face for headings and one highly legible face for details. Reserve a single accent color for dividers or headings, keep body text dark on a light background, and use sufficient line spacing for viewing on a phone.
- Separate connections visually. Number segments or place them in chronological order. Show the connecting airport and, if relevant, the planned layover duration. Do not imply that a connection is guaranteed when the schedule is only illustrative.
- Remove credential-like elements. Delete live booking references, ticket numbers, barcodes, QR codes, seat assignments, airline logos, and wording that could make the page appear issued. If a design exercise needs a placeholder, label it nonfunctional and fictional.
- Run a consistency check. Confirm that the passenger name is consistent, dates progress forward, airports match the stated cities, arrival follows departure, and every segment appears exactly once. Check that the status label is readable at normal zoom.
- Export for sharing. Export to PDF if a fixed layout is useful. The export is a convenient format for the mockup; it does not change its status into a reservation or ticket. Keep the editable source separate from any file you send publicly.
Design choices that look polished without copying an airline
Typography and spacing
Use a clear size contrast: a larger trip title, medium section labels, and smaller but still readable segment details. Align times and airport codes in columns so the eye can compare segments quickly. Whitespace around each card prevents a dense page from looking like a scan of an official document.

A white or very light background with one dark text color and one restrained accent is easier to print and more accessible than a dark, decorative layout. Give the warning label a strong contrast ratio and avoid placing it over a photograph or gradient.
Branding boundaries
Do not reproduce a carrier’s logo, distinctive boarding-pass artwork, official seals, or a real booking portal screenshot unless you have authorization and the use is genuinely permitted. A neutral title, generic icon, and your own color system communicate the route without suggesting endorsement or issuance.
Privacy and file handling
Replace real passport details, dates of birth, loyalty numbers, and contact information with fictional values or opaque redactions. Inspect the exported PDF for hidden text layers, comments, metadata, or the original editable file before posting it. A mockup can still expose personal data even when the visual design is harmless.

Know which document you actually need
Choosing the right document starts with what the receiving party requires, not with how convincing a page looks. These categories are not interchangeable.

When comparing a real option, ask five questions: What exactly was issued? Who issued the reference? Can it be checked in the airline’s system or only in a provider portal? How long does it remain valid? Will the specific authority receiving it accept it for your purpose?
Visa, transit, and border requirements are separate from design
A visually credible page cannot guarantee a visa or entry decision. UK Home Office guidance states: “Submitting or presenting any of the documents listed below does not guarantee that your application for a visit visa or entry at the border will be successful.” That statement applies to UK guidance; it should not be generalized to every destination.
The same UK guidance says visitors must be able to pay for a return or onward journey and gives a transit example in which the outward journey is confirmed and within 48 hours of arrival. Whether a mockup, reservation, or ticket satisfies a particular case depends on the route, nationality, visa category, and current checklist. Read the authority’s current instructions and ask the carrier or consulate what document type it will accept before submitting anything.
Never present a self-made PDF as proof of a booking. If an authority requires a confirmed onward reservation, use a genuine document of the requested type and retain the confirmation, terms, and validity information supplied by the issuer.

What the U.S. 24-hour rule does—and does not—mean
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s ticket guidance says that for qualifying airline tickets purchased at least seven days before scheduled departure, the airline must either allow cancellation within 24 hours for a full refund or allow a reservation hold at the quoted price for 24 hours. The airline does not have to provide both options.
The rule also does not apply to tickets booked through online travel agencies or other agents. It is therefore incorrect to promise every traveler a universal 24-hour hold, to treat a mockup as a hold, or to assume that a provider’s expiration window follows the DOT rule. Check the booking channel, departure timing, fare terms, and carrier policy that apply to the actual transaction.
Common failure modes and fixes
The page looks official but has no status warning
Fix: Add the high-contrast mockup label at the top and a plain status note near the route. If the page has multiple pages, label each page.
A fictional reference resembles a live PNR
Fix: Remove it or replace it with “Fictional placeholder — nonfunctional.” Do not use a real person’s code, a live reservation, or a scannable pattern in a public example.

Fix: Replace the branding with neutral typography, your own accent color, and generic separators. If you have authorization for a genuine brand use, retain written permission and still label a non-issued sample as a mockup.

Times and airport codes contradict one another
Fix: Verify each city-code pair, mark times as local, check the date change at the destination, and review the segments in chronological order. Mark unverified schedules as illustrative instead of silently presenting them as current.
Personal information remains in the export
Fix: Replace or redact names, document numbers, contact details, loyalty IDs, and dates of birth. Reopen the exported PDF and inspect selectable text, comments, metadata, and hidden layers.
The recipient asks for proof of travel
Fix: Stop using the mockup for that purpose. Read the recipient’s current checklist and obtain the genuine reservation, ticket, or other evidence it specifies. Acceptance is decided by the relevant airline, consulate, border authority, or institution—not by the visual quality of your PDF.
Final pre-export checklist
- The header says SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING and remains readable at normal size.
- The file name and surrounding message do not call the document confirmed, issued, ticketed, or ready to board.
- Passenger details are fictional or properly redacted.
- Origin, destination, airport names, codes, dates, local times, and segment order are internally consistent.
- Invented airline, flight, schedule, and reference values are identified as fictional.
- No barcode, QR code, booking reference, ticket number, seat assignment, airline logo, or credential-like code could be mistaken for a live document.
- The PDF contains no hidden personal data, comments, or editable source attached unintentionally.
- You have not submitted the mockup where a real reservation, ticket, or proof of onward travel is required.
When a custom itinerary is the right tool
Use the design for a presentation, a travel plan shared with companions, a route comparison, a training exercise, or a visual prototype. Its value is clarity: readers can see who is traveling, which segments are planned, where connections occur, and which assumptions still need confirmation.
Do not use it to satisfy check-in, boarding, visa, transit, border-entry, reimbursement, or fraud-prevention requirements. Those situations depend on the issuing system and the receiving authority’s current rules. A deliberately conspicuous mockup is both more useful and safer than a counterfeit-looking document because nobody has to guess what it represents.
