Add a prominent “novelty gift — not valid for travel” notice, use original GTA-inspired colors and wording rather than copied game assets, and keep the finished piece clearly separate from a real airline document.

Decide what kind of gift you are making
A GTA-themed boarding pass works best as a reveal card, party prop, or keepsake for a fan. It borrows the visual language of an airline ticket—passenger, destination, date, gate and seat—without pretending to authorize transportation. Treat every field as fictional from the beginning.

Keep the fictional status visible on the front, not hidden in fine print. A line such as “NOVELTY GIFT • NOT VALID FOR TRAVEL OR CHECK-IN” can sit beneath the title and repeat on the reverse if you print both sides.

Choose a production route
There are three practical ways to make the pass. A generator minimizes layout work; a self-designed file gives you the most creative control; and a custom event-pass printer can provide a more specialized physical finish. None is universally best.

Before ordering from a printer, confirm its current product choices, turnaround, shipping and price. The cited RockStar Passes ordering article was modified in 2020, so its details should be treated as vendor-specific guidance to recheck rather than a current industry standard.
Collect the fictional details first
Writing the content before opening a template prevents a crowded design and makes the joke coherent. Use a short worksheet and decide which details are meaningful to the recipient.
Passenger and occasion
- Passenger: Use the recipient’s preferred name or gamer nickname. If the gift is for a child, avoid publishing a full name on a public photo.
- Date: Choose the birthday, party date or another meaningful day. If the pass is a surprise for a future event, make clear that the date is part of the fictional design.
- Gift message: A small line such as “One legendary night out” or “For your next virtual getaway” adds context without imitating a real airline notice.
Invented journey
- Departure and arrival: Create playful, clearly fictional airport codes and destination names. Avoid codes that happen to match a real airport if that could confuse the recipient.
- Flight number: Use a fictional number or an in-game-inspired reference that has no connection to a real booking.
- Gate, seat and boarding group: These can be jokes—“Gate LS,” “Seat 4B” or “Boarding group V”—but do not copy a real itinerary.
- Reference number and barcode: Omit them, replace them with decorative lines, or label them “PROP CODE.” A scannable-looking code is unnecessary and can make a novelty item appear authentic.
Read every field aloud as if someone unfamiliar with the joke will see it. If a detail could be interpreted as a real carrier, airport or reservation, change it.
Use a novelty boarding-pass generator
The MakeMyBoardingPass page describes a straightforward workflow: enter a passenger name and flight-style information, choose a design, and export a PNG or PDF. Its own notice says the passes are for novelty use and not for real check-in or travel. It is a third-party service, not a Rockstar tool or endorsement.

- Open the generator and review its fields. Note which items are optional. Do not force real-looking data into a field merely because the form provides one.
- Enter the fictional itinerary. Use the worksheet you prepared. Keep the destination, flight number and gate obviously playful.
- Choose the least misleading layout. Prefer a design that leaves room for a large novelty disclaimer. If a template includes a barcode or security-style element, replace it if the editor allows, or choose another design.
- Add GTA-inspired language without claiming ownership. You can use original phrases, fictional city references and a color mood associated with the games, but do not state or imply that the pass was made, licensed or approved by Rockstar Games.
- Preview at full size. Check spelling, contrast, line breaks and the visibility of the disclaimer. A name that is truncated in the preview will also be truncated in the export.
- Export both formats when available. Keep the PDF for a print workflow and the PNG for a quick home print or digital gift message. Save the original text separately in case you need to correct a typo.
- Print a proof. Print one copy on ordinary paper before using any specialty stock. Confirm that the margins, colors and disclaimer look right at the intended physical size.
The generator documentation says its output can be printed at home or at a local copy shop. It does not establish a universal paper weight, printer model or color profile, so check your own printer’s media limits before selecting cardstock.
Design the pass yourself for more control
A self-made file is useful when the gift needs a custom joke, a particular aspect ratio or a visual connection to another item. Start with a ticket-shaped rectangle and build a clear hierarchy rather than decorating every available space.

Build the information hierarchy
- Header: Put an original title such as “Los Santos Air — Novelty Pass” or “GTA Fan Flight” at the top. Include “NOVELTY GIFT” in the same visual zone.
- Primary identity: Make the recipient’s name the largest text after the title. A personal gift should not make the joke harder to find than the fictional airline name.
- Journey row: Set departure and arrival apart with arrows or a route line. Use invented codes and destinations.
- Secondary fields: Add date, gate, seat, boarding group and flight number in smaller blocks. Keep labels explicit so the piece reads as a parody rather than a real credential.
- Disclaimer: Add “NOT VALID FOR TRAVEL, CHECK-IN OR ENTRY” near the bottom, with enough contrast to remain readable after printing.
- Decorative area: Reserve space for an original emblem, skyline silhouette, palm-tree motif, map line or other fan-inspired graphic that you created yourself.
Use an original visual language
Choose a compact palette—such as charcoal, off-white and a strong accent color—and repeat it consistently in headings, dividers and icons. You can evoke a crime-game atmosphere with distressed texture, neon accents, a stylized city outline or a satirical slogan, but avoid copying official logos, promotional illustrations, screenshots or recognizable brand marks. Original graphics also reproduce more cleanly than a low-resolution screenshot.
Typography should support legibility. Use one display face for the title and a simple sans-serif for fields. Keep critical text away from decorative borders, perforations and heavy textures. If the pass will be viewed by someone with low vision, increase contrast and avoid relying on color alone to distinguish departure from arrival.
Add a reverse side only when it helps
A back panel can carry a personal message, the gift instructions or a short disclaimer. It can also explain that the pass is a fictional prop. Do not fill the reverse with copied game text or artwork simply to make it look official; a clean message is more personal and less likely to create rights confusion.

Prepare a file for home or local-copy-shop printing
For a single pass, export a high-quality PDF when the software supports it. Keep a PNG backup for quick printing. The sources confirm printable PNG/PDF output but do not specify a universal physical dimension, bleed value or paper stock for home printers, so follow the page setup and media instructions for your own equipment.

- Keep names, dates, the disclaimer and important graphics comfortably inside the printer’s printable area.
- Do not place a critical word directly against a trim edge or a decorative cutout.
- If your design has a full-bleed background, test how your printer handles borderless printing. If it cannot print to the edge, allow a clean border rather than letting the background stop unpredictably.
- Print a test on plain paper, trim it, and compare it with the intended envelope or gift box before committing to a final copy.
Select paper conditionally
Cardstock can make the piece feel more like a ticket, but it is optional. The available documentation does not specify a paper weight or guarantee compatibility with a particular home printer. Check the printer manual for supported thickness, feed direction and duplex limits, and use the correct media setting so ink or toner does not smear.
Trim and finish
Use a ruler and a sharp craft knife on a cutting mat, or ask a copy shop to trim the sheet. Round corners only after confirming that the disclaimer and edge artwork remain intact. If you want a perforated look, draw a dotted line or use a decorative edge; do not create a tear strip that could be mistaken for an actual airline document.
Submit artwork to a custom event-pass printer
A specialized printer is useful when you want several matching passes or a particular finish. RockStar Passes publishes template and ordering guidance, but those requirements apply to that vendor’s selected template, not to every print shop.
Follow the vendor’s template, not a generic one
- Select the product first. The vendor documents choices such as pass shape and size, finish, punch style, and one- or two-sided printing.
- Download the current template for that product. Do not resize a template from another pass style. The cut line and safe area can change with the selected shape.
- Place your artwork on the template layers. Keep background artwork extending to the bleed line when the template calls for it.
- Keep critical elements in the safe area. The vendor’s instruction is: “Any critical text or logos that must remain on the final pass should not extend beyond the green art safe area.” Treat that green area as a production boundary for that template.
- Export in the requested format. RockStar Passes specifies PDF artwork in CMYK at 300 DPI for its submitted art. Convert and inspect the file before upload rather than assuming an RGB web image will print correctly.
- Review the proof and order details. Confirm side count, finish, quantity, delivery timing and shipping before payment. Check the vendor’s current page because ordering information cited in older material may have changed.
Do not put a real airline logo, copied game logo or official-looking seal into the file simply because the template has a placeholder. Replace it with an original mark and retain the novelty notice.

Keep the GTA connection fan-made and non-commercial
Rockstar Games’ customer-support policy, updated January 10, 2025, says: “This policy is intended to address occasional, non-commercial in-game content use by individual members of the Rockstar fan community.” That statement is deliberately limited. The policy discusses certain non-commercial in-game uses and reserves the right to remove material; it is not blanket permission to manufacture or sell physical GTA-branded merchandise.
The company’s legal terms reserve rights in its content and marks and describe personal use of its services as non-commercial. For a personal gift, the cautious approach is to make an original, fan-inspired design, avoid official logos and copied artwork, and never describe the pass as licensed or endorsed. If you plan to sell passes, use them in advertising, publish them commercially or otherwise monetize the design, obtain rights advice and direct questions to Rockstar’s copyright contact. This guidance is practical risk reduction, not a legal determination about any individual design.
Wording that avoids confusion
- Use “GTA-inspired fan gift” or “fan-made novelty pass,” not “official GTA boarding pass.”
- Add “Not affiliated with or endorsed by Rockstar Games” if the context could cause confusion.
- Do not copy a game cover, loading screen, character portrait, official wordmark or in-game ticket artwork.
- Do not use the pass to gain entry, board transportation or represent a booking.
Make the fictional details feel personal
The strongest gifts contain references only the recipient will recognize. Keep them legible and avoid stuffing every joke into tiny type.
Match the destination to the occasion
Use a fictional city district, beach, desert or mountain destination that reflects the recipient’s favorite in-game setting. For a real-world trip or event, put the genuine information on a separate invitation or message; keep the boarding pass itself fictional.

Turn fields into inside jokes
- Gate: Name it after a memorable mission-like phrase or a harmless personal joke.
- Seat: Use a number tied to the recipient’s birthday, favorite jersey or gaming setup.
- Boarding group: Choose a playful label such as “Crew,” “VIP” or “Player Two,” while keeping the novelty notice visible.
- Fare type: “Birthday upgrade,” “Night-out pass” or “Collector’s prop” communicates the gift’s purpose better than a real fare class.
Include a hand-written element
Leave a small message area for a signature, a date or a note such as “Redeem for one co-op evening.” Handwriting makes a generated template feel custom without altering the fictional travel information.

Troubleshoot common problems
The exported name or disclaimer is clipped
Return to the editor and shorten the text, reduce the font slightly, or move it inward. Do not rely on a printer’s automatic scaling to fix clipping; scaling can make the whole pass too small.
Colors look dull or muddy
Print a proof and simplify the palette. Dark textures can consume detail on home printers. If you are using the RockStar Passes workflow, prepare the submitted PDF in CMYK at 300 DPI as its instructions specify; do not treat that setting as a universal requirement for every printer.
The background has an uneven white border
Your printer may not support borderless output. Add an intentional border, or have a copy shop trim the pass. For a vendor template, extend the background to the bleed line exactly as instructed and keep text in the safe area.

The file is rejected by a printer
Ask for the current template and accepted format rather than guessing. Confirm page size, side count, color mode, resolution, bleed and naming requirements. Re-export from the vendor’s template and inspect the PDF before resubmitting.
The prop looks too real
Increase the size and contrast of “NOVELTY GIFT — NOT VALID FOR TRAVEL,” remove realistic booking codes or barcodes, and replace any real carrier or airport identifiers with invented ones. An intentionally playful title and original artwork help signal the purpose immediately.
The paper jams or ink smears
Check the printer’s supported media thickness and feed path, select the matching media setting, and let ink dry before trimming. If the printer cannot handle the chosen stock, use ordinary paper for the proof and a local copy shop for the final piece.
Package and present the finished pass
Place the pass in an envelope, greeting card or small gift box rather than handing it over loose. A short note can explain the fictional destination and connect it to the real present. If you include a digital copy, send the PDF or PNG alongside the physical pass as a keepsake, not as a travel credential.
