How to Make a Character Creator More Inclusive Without Limiting Creative Freedom

More customization does not automatically make a character creator inclusive, and inclusion does not require every game to offer the same options. The strongest designs widen the ways players can recognize themselves or project a role into a fictional world while preserving the game’s art direction, story, tone, and production limits.

That means examining the whole experience: which traits can be changed, how categories restrict combinations, whether the controls are usable, whose feedback shaped the feature, and whether the result fits the fiction. Microsoft’s Product Inclusion Framework is explicit that it “is not meant to be a checklist or any sort of mandate of what makes an ‘inclusive game.’” Treat inclusion as a design process and a set of questions, not a universal menu.

Start with the creator’s purpose

Before adding sliders or expanding a wardrobe, define what the character creator is meant to do. A self-expression tool has different requirements from a story-specific casting screen.

Self-expression

If players are expected to make a character that feels like them, identity signals such as body shape, skin tone, hair, facial features, voice, pronouns, and clothing may need to work in combinations that do not follow a single gender template. The game still does not need every possible option. It needs a meaningful range that matches its setting and lets players avoid choices that feel fundamentally wrong for them.

Role projection

Some players want a vessel for imagining themselves in the world; others want a character unlike themselves. Offer enough control to support both uses, while keeping the character’s abilities, social role, or backstory where the narrative requires them.

Story-specific casting

A tightly authored game may need a fixed protagonist, a specific body, or a defined voice. In that case, inclusion can appear in supporting characters, cosmetic expression, accessibility settings, alternate presentation choices, or the ability to interpret a role without rewriting its core premise. A creator is not obligated to make every fictional person interchangeable.

Social identity and community play

In multiplayer spaces, names, pronouns, readable silhouettes, voice options, and clothing can affect whether players feel comfortable being seen by others. These decisions should account for privacy, moderation, and clarity in addition to representation.

Write this purpose down before setting the feature list. It becomes the test for every later decision: does a proposed option help the intended fantasy, or does it add complexity without giving players a useful choice?

Use four inclusion lenses instead of one checklist

Xbox’s Gaming for Everyone framework describes four “doorways”: approachability, representation, globalization, and accessibility. They are planning lenses, not mandatory categories that every game must satisfy in the same way.

Approachability

A creator can be inclusive in theory and intimidating in practice. Explain unfamiliar terms, preview changes immediately, provide sensible defaults, and let players undo or randomize choices. Group related controls and make the effect of each setting visible. A short first-run walkthrough can help without forcing experienced players through a tutorial every time.

Representation

Representation concerns who can appear in the game and how they are depicted. It includes visual traits, names, voices, clothing, relationships, cultural details, and the roles characters occupy in the story. Variety matters: one character cannot stand in for an entire community or culture. Microsoft’s representation guidance warns against treating a single portrayal as representative of everyone in a group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Globalization

Names, scripts, skin and hair descriptions, honorifics, pronouns, and voice language can behave differently across regions. Design text fields and localization rules so an inclusive option is not broken by a narrow character limit, an assumed first-and-last-name order, or grammar that supports only one language pattern. If a feature cannot be localized everywhere at launch, state the supported regions and plan how updates will be tested.

Accessibility

Players need to reach and operate the same choices. Support keyboard, controller, and other input methods your game already targets; keep focus order logical; provide readable text and sufficient contrast; avoid relying on color alone; and ensure sliders, swatches, and previews can be used without precise pointing. Accessibility is not separate from inclusion: a broad option set that some players cannot navigate is a narrower experience than its item count suggests.

Choose breadth that fits the world

The IGDA resource advises broad trait ranges and cautions against gendering a player character when a fixed gender is not required by the story. Apply that principle to the dimensions your game actually supports rather than copying a feature list from another title.

Audit meaningful traits

List the attributes players notice or use to express identity:

  • Body proportions, height, build, and physical features.
  • Faces, skin tones, scars, age cues, and facial hair.
  • Hair textures, lengths, protective styles, and head coverings where they fit the setting.
  • Clothing, armor, cosmetics, accessories, and color choices.
  • Voice pitch, performance style, speech rate, and subtitles.
  • Name, pronouns, forms of address, and other identity signals supported by the fiction.
  • Animations, posture, and movement style when those choices do not create gameplay disadvantages.

This is an audit, not a demand that every game include every item. A stylized fantasy world may use a small set of exaggerated bodies; a realistic simulation may need a wider range of hair or clothing. Explain the creative and technical boundaries internally, then make sure the remaining choices are not restricted by assumptions that the story never uses.

Build combinations, not isolated checkboxes

Players experience the result of combinations. A game may offer many skin tones but only one body family, or several hairstyles that disappear when a helmet is equipped. Test representative combinations across body, face, hair, clothing, voice, and pronouns. Check animation clipping, armor fit, camera framing, hitbox fairness, and whether a choice changes how non-player characters address the player.

When a combination is impossible for a real technical reason, communicate it clearly. A disabled option with an explanation is less frustrating than a control that appears available and silently resets another choice.

Remove category gates that do not serve the fiction

Menus often inherit “male” and “female” tabs even when the underlying assets are not meaningfully gendered. If the narrative does not require a fixed category, let players select appearance, voice, pronouns, and clothing independently. This is a design implication of the IGDA guidance, not a prescribed control scheme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask why a gate exists

For each restriction, identify its purpose:

  • Narrative reason: a plot, relationship, or historical rule requires a defined characteristic.
  • Gameplay reason: the choice changes hitboxes, equipment, animation, or balance.
  • Technical reason: assets or voice lines are not authored for a combination yet.
  • Inherited convention: the category exists because an older interface used it.

Keep a gate when it is essential to the first three reasons, and document the trade-off. Remove or soften it when it is merely inherited. A filter such as “body,” “voice,” or “clothing” can be more informative than a gender tab, provided the labels are clear and the results are easy to preview.

Keep language consistent

Separating appearance from identity does not help if dialogue, menus, or save data force a different assumption later. Audit character creation, tutorials, subtitles, profile screens, romance systems, and customer-support forms as one journey. If pronouns are selectable, verify every supported language and grammatical form; if they are not supported, do not imply that a player can set them.

Make a large option set discoverable

Findability is part of inclusion. A player should not have to know the designer’s taxonomy to reach an important choice.

Organize for scanning

Use stable categories, search or filters where the list is large, and a visible preview. Keep the current selection obvious. Preserve the player’s position when moving between categories, and provide a “randomize within this category” action so experimentation does not require repeated scrolling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Explain unfamiliar controls

Tooltips, short labels, and before-and-after previews reduce guesswork. Avoid euphemisms that obscure what a setting changes. If a voice option affects only performance and not dialogue content, say so. If a body setting changes armor fit or animation, disclose that before confirmation.

Design for different inputs

Test the complete flow with a controller, keyboard, and any alternate input method the game supports. Ensure focus indicators remain visible, sliders have step values and keyboard increments, and color pickers have a non-color way to identify a selection. Save changes continuously or provide an explicit confirmation and a recovery path after an accidental reset.

Represent people without tokenizing them

Adding a single visibly marginalized character does not make a cast inclusive. Microsoft’s representation guidance says no one portrayal represents an entire community or culture and recommends respectful expression. Variety should appear in appearance, personality, occupation, power, relationships, and narrative importance.

Look beyond the avatar screen

Review non-player characters, enemies, background crowds, promotional art, dialogue, quests, and romance options. Ask whether characters from a group are always villains, comic relief, victims, experts, or sidekicks. A creator can offer a wide range of faces while the surrounding world still communicates a stereotype.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid the “one option” trap

If production limits mean you can support only a small number of culturally specific styles, do not present one item as the definitive version of a group. Use accurate terminology, consult people with relevant expertise, and be transparent about what the game does and does not attempt to represent. Remove an inaccurate option rather than shipping a caricature simply to fill a quota.

Test fit and context

Representation can fail through animation, lighting, camera framing, or dialogue even when the asset itself looks respectful. Test darker skin tones under the game’s actual lighting, verify hair and headwear in gameplay cameras, and check that clothing does not trigger unwanted assumptions in dialogue. These are quality checks, not proof that a whole community has been represented.

Co-create and validate with affected players

Microsoft’s product-inclusion actions emphasize goals, co-creation, inclusive listening, research, and reviewing whether identities are represented without tokenizing people. Treat consultation as part of development, not a final publicity check.

Set a specific question

Do not ask reviewers to judge “inclusivity” in the abstract. Ask whether a menu label is understandable, whether a combination is missing, whether an animation feels stereotyped, or whether a pronoun appears correctly in a particular line. Specific questions produce actionable findings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recruit relevant expertise

Include people who use the identities, languages, and access needs the feature is intended to support. Compensate their time and expertise. A small, carefully selected review group can expose problems that a large general playtest misses, but it cannot speak for everyone.

Test in stages

  1. Concept review: show the information architecture, labels, and intended combinations before assets are locked.
  2. Prototype review: test navigation, discoverability, and whether category gates communicate a clear reason.
  3. Content review: inspect names, hair, clothing, voices, animations, dialogue, and localization in context.
  4. Playtest: observe whether people can create the character they intended without assistance.
  5. Regression review: repeat key checks after updates, new equipment, localization changes, or engine migrations.

Record what changed because of feedback and what remains outside scope. This creates accountability without claiming that one round of consultation certifies the design.

Preserve difficult themes and specific creative direction

Inclusion does not mean removing every uncomfortable subject or making every character neutral. Xbox Accessibility Guideline 123 states: “Game creators ultimately have full creative autonomy when choosing the content represented in their games.” The guideline frames warnings and customization as ways to increase awareness of potentially negative experiences and support players, not as a general order to remove difficult material.

Separate content from control

A story may intentionally include discrimination, violence, body horror, grief, or a historically specific conflict. Keep the narrative choice if it is essential to the work, while giving players information and settings that help them decide how to engage. Content warnings, subtitle controls, reduced-intensity effects, camera options, or the ability to skip a sensitive scene can widen access without rewriting the premise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the creator coherent

Do not add identity options that contradict the world’s rules merely to increase a checklist score. Instead, find the level at which agency belongs: a voice choice, a hairstyle, a name, a relationship, a body variation, or a customizable companion. Inclusion is stronger when it feels authored for the setting rather than pasted on top of it.

Measure the design with practical questions

The following comparison axes turn broad principles into a review your team can repeat. They are a synthesis of Microsoft’s framework and representation guidance with the IGDA resource, not an official scoring system.

Axis Questions to ask Evidence to collect
Option breadth and combinations Which traits can change? Can players combine them without unexpected resets or penalties? Combination matrix, clipping tests, animation and equipment checks.
Category gates Does a gender or other label restrict choices without a narrative, gameplay, or technical reason? Gate inventory, rationale for each restriction, alternative information architecture.
Representation quality Is there meaningful variety, and do characters avoid stereotypes or token roles? Cast audit, context review, consultation notes, dialogue and lighting tests.
Usability and accessibility Can players find, understand, and operate the controls with supported inputs and access needs? Task-completion observations, input-method tests, contrast and focus checks.
Community validation Did affected people review the design early enough to change it? Recruitment record, compensated feedback, issue log, resulting revisions.
Creative fit Do the choices support the art direction, characters, genre, and story? World-bible review, narrative sign-off, asset and localization consistency checks.

A practical development workflow

1. Write the design intent

State whether the creator serves self-expression, role projection, authored casting, social identity, or a blend. Define which traits are core to the fantasy and which are deliberately fixed.

2. Map the player journey

Draw every screen from first launch through gameplay, save/load, equipment, dialogue, multiplayer identity, and settings. Mark where an identity choice is displayed, transformed, or overwritten.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Build the combination matrix

List supported body, face, hair, clothing, voice, pronoun, and name combinations. Mark technical dependencies and decide which restrictions are acceptable. Test high-risk combinations before polishing every asset.

4. Review language and categories

Replace inherited labels that do not describe a real gameplay or story distinction. Check localization, grammar, text expansion, and save compatibility before content lock.

5. Run accessibility and approachability passes

Verify input support, focus order, contrast, text size, previews, undo, defaults, and the ability to skip or revisit choices. Observe new players rather than assuming a menu is self-explanatory.

6. Consult and iterate

Bring in affected players and relevant experts at concept, prototype, content, and playtest stages. Track findings, pay contributors, and make visible decisions about what changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Validate in the full game

Check the creator under actual lighting, cameras, armor, animations, dialogue, cutscenes, multiplayer displays, and localized builds. Re-run the checks whenever new content changes the available combinations.

What the available evidence says about player expectations

Microsoft’s Representation page attributes a 2022 Google PC & Console Insights Report chart to the finding that more than 70% of PC and console gamers rated diverse characters and diverse stories as “extremely” or “very” important. The statement is limited to that population and wording; the underlying report and survey method were not independently examined here.

A Microsoft Game Dev page also presents a figure saying 57% of players in the broader gaming market did not play certain games because those games were not made for them. The surfaced material does not identify the original study, year, or method, so treat it as an attributed industry figure rather than a fully verified statistic. Neither number tells a team which slider to add. They indicate why it is worth checking whether a game communicates that players are welcome and able to participate.

Questions to ask before release

  • Can a player explain what each important control changes before confirming it?
  • Are meaningful traits available across the body, face, hair, clothing, voice, and identity dimensions the game supports?
  • Which combinations are blocked, and is every block justified by the fiction, gameplay, or a documented technical limit?
  • Do lighting, animation, dialogue, localization, and equipment preserve the player’s choices?
  • Can players using supported inputs and accessibility settings complete the creator without assistance?
  • Does the wider cast show variety in personality, agency, and narrative role rather than one token portrayal?
  • Did people affected by the choices review the design early enough to change it, and were they compensated?
  • Do warnings or player settings support difficult content without forcing the story to abandon its creative purpose?
