You can make a mildly soft photo look sharper, and AI tools may improve a low-resolution image or some kinds of blur. But sharpening cannot reliably restore focus or motion detail the camera never captured. Start by identifying the problem, then use the least aggressive fix that improves the picture without creating distracting or misleading details.
Identify what made the picture blurry
Open an untouched copy and inspect it at 100% zoom. The pattern of softness helps you choose a method:

- Uniformly soft edges: The camera may have missed focus, or the lens may have produced slight softness. Ordinary sharpening can emphasize edges that are already in focus, but it cannot reliably bring an unfocused subject back into focus.
- Directional streaks or doubled edges: Camera movement or a moving subject may have caused motion blur. A motion-blur restoration model may help, but results depend on the image and can include artifacts.
- Blocky, jagged, or pixelated detail: The image may be low resolution or compressed, especially if it has been enlarged. Upscaling can produce a larger, more usable image, but some methods synthesize detail rather than recover what was captured.
Adobe Learn instructor Jan Kabili puts the limit plainly: “Did you know that sharpening does not fix a blurry photo nor bring unfocused areas into focus?” Sharpening increases contrast around edges; it makes existing in-focus details look crisper rather than recovering missing information. For mild softness, try Unsharp Mask with reversible settings. Adobe recommends converting the image layer to a Smart Object before applying the filter so you can revisit its settings.

- In Photoshop, select the photo layer and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object.
- Choose Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask.
- Adjust Amount to control sharpening strength, Radius to control the width of the edge contrast, and Threshold to keep smooth areas or grain from being emphasized as much.
- Make restrained changes and inspect at 100% zoom. Compare with the original, then check the image at its normal display size.
Sharpening can exaggerate noise along with detail. If grain becomes conspicuous, reduce the effect rather than increasing it to compensate for blur. Watch for bright or dark halos around edges and an unnaturally crunchy appearance. Adobe’s tutorial describes the Smart Object workflow and the filter controls.
If the source is RAW, try Camera Raw Super Resolution
Adobe’s documented Super Resolution workflow is for RAW files opened in Camera Raw; it is not a general sharpening command for any JPEG or raster image. In Camera Raw, right-click the RAW image, choose Enhance, and select Super Resolution. Review the preview before saving. Adobe says the enhanced result is saved as a DNG. This can help when the goal is a larger RAW-derived image, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed repair for missed focus or motion blur. For stronger blur or enlargement, compare AI approaches
AI restoration and upscaling may be worth trying when ordinary sharpening is inadequate, but their goals differ. Adobe’s Generative Upscale documentation, updated May 20, 2026, lists 2x and 4x scaling options in Photoshop and these documented provider limits:

These are documentation limits, not independent measures of image quality. Availability, limits, and subscription conditions can change, so check the current Photoshop app and documentation before relying on a particular option.

Choose a restoration model by the blur pattern
Topaz’s Photo sharpening documentation lists Standard, Strong, Lens Blur, and Motion Blur models. The vendor describes Standard as suitable for slight blur and recommends trying it before Strong to reduce the risk of over-sharpening and unwanted artifacts. If the image is noisy, Topaz advises denoising first because sharpening can accentuate noise. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent test results; the documentation does not establish a software version here.

Compare the enhanced image with the original at 100% and at normal viewing size. Inspect faces, hair, text, repeated patterns, and image edges. Look for halos, waxy textures, doubled edges, or lettering and facial features that appear invented. Adobe notes that AI pixel reconstruction can introduce minor variations; on faces or other identity-sensitive details, do not present reconstructed detail as proof of what the original image contained. If the stronger version looks less faithful or less natural than a restrained edit, keep the restrained edit. When accuracy matters, identify AI-created detail as enhancement or reconstruction where the context calls for it.
