A YouTube stream cannot restart itself if the computer loses power. For a do-it-yourself setup, recovery depends on a complete chain: restore power, configure the PC to turn itself on, start the operating system and encoder, wait for the network to return, and confirm YouTube is receiving the stream. A UPS can bridge a short interruption, but no single setting guarantees recovery after a longer outage.
What has to happen for the stream to resume
Think of recovery as a sequence of dependencies, not a YouTube switch. The computer must receive power and boot; the encoder must launch with the right scene and stream key; and the network must be available when the encoder connects. YouTube’s auto-start setting controls how an incoming encoder feed starts the broadcast—it does not power on a computer or ensure your router is ready.

- Power returns: The PC and network equipment need electricity. A UPS may keep them running through a brief outage or allow an orderly shutdown, but only for its available battery runtime.
- The PC boots: Firmware must be configured to power on when utility power returns.
- The encoder launches: The operating system must start the streaming software with the saved scene and stream configuration.
- The network is ready: The encoder needs a working internet connection to reach YouTube.
- YouTube receives the feed: The correct stream key and stream settings must be in place, and the selected workflow may still require an operator to click “Go live” in Live Control Room.
A failure or delay at any step can prevent automatic recovery. YouTube cautions that a connectivity disruption can break a stream (Streaming tips).

Choose between riding through the outage and restarting
Use a UPS for short interruptions
A UPS connected to the streaming PC and essential network equipment can provide temporary power. Depending on the load and its battery runtime, it may keep the broadcast running through a brief interruption or give the PC time to shut down cleanly. It is not indefinite backup power: if the battery runs down, the UPS may switch off. Schneider Electric explains that restarting after UPS output shuts down also depends on the computer’s BIOS power-on behavior (APC Back-UPS automatic restart guidance).

Plan for a full power-off and restart
If an outage lasts longer than the UPS runtime, recovery requires the PC’s firmware, operating system, encoder, network and YouTube workflow to cooperate. Automatic restart is more convenient than manual intervention, but it is not a guarantee—particularly if the computer starts before the modem or router has reconnected.
Configure the PC to power on when electricity returns
- Find the relevant BIOS/UEFI setting. Restart the PC and enter its firmware setup using the key shown during startup or in the PC or motherboard manual. Look for a setting named something like “Restore AC Power Loss” or “AC Power Recovery.” The location, name and behavior vary by manufacturer and model.
- Select the power-on behavior. Choose the option that turns the system on after AC power returns, rather than leaving it off. ASUS documents “Power On” and “Last State” options for its setting; its example lists “Power Off” as the default. Check the documentation for your exact model before changing firmware settings (ASUS: Restore AC Power Loss).
- Save the change and test it. Shut down the PC, disconnect power in a controlled test, restore it and confirm that the machine boots. Do not assume the setting works on every model simply because a similarly named option exists elsewhere.
If the PC does not support this behavior, or the setting is unavailable, firmware alone cannot make it start after being left without power.
Start the operating system and encoder automatically
Once the computer boots, the streaming software still has to launch and connect. Windows users can arrange for OBS to start at sign-in using a Startup-folder shortcut or Task Scheduler. An OBS community discussion also describes adding --startstreaming to an OBS shortcut’s target to request streaming on launch. This is community guidance, not a guarantee for every current OBS release or configuration; verify the option against your installed version and test it before relying on it (OBS forum discussion, March 21, 2024).

- Save and inspect the OBS profile and scene collection. Confirm the correct scene, sources, output resolution, encoder settings and stream destination are loaded after a normal restart.
- Set up automatic launch. Use your operating system’s startup mechanism or Task Scheduler. If using the OBS shortcut method, confirm the shortcut points to the installed OBS executable and that any startup argument is accepted by your version.
- Decide how OBS should behave if the network is late. A PC may boot before the modem, router or upstream service is available. In the cited OBS discussion, a community answer warns that reconnect behavior may not help if the initial connection attempt fails. Do not rely on one immediate startup attempt; use a tested delay or retry arrangement, or plan to intervene manually if needed.
- Restart normally before testing an outage. Verify that OBS opens the intended scene and that it does not begin sending an unintended feed or use an incorrect stream configuration.
Check YouTube’s stream settings and key
Your encoder sends video to YouTube using a stream key. YouTube allows a custom stream key to be reused, so you do not necessarily need to create a new one for every session. Treat the key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. In YouTube Studio, open the stream’s settings in Live Control Room and verify the selected key and the auto-start and auto-stop options. Their effect is on starting and stopping from the encoder; neither setting can turn on a powered-off PC. Check Live Control Room after a test connection to see whether your workflow starts automatically or requires “Go live” (Manage live stream settings).
Before relying on unattended recovery, make a normal test stream. Confirm that YouTube receives the right picture and audio, that stream health is acceptable, and that the broadcast actually enters the state you expect.
Set 4K 60fps encoder values for the codec you use
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS streaming. Use the bitrate for the codec selected in your encoder; the figures below are YouTube’s platform recommendations and limits, not independent performance benchmarks or guarantees.

| Codec | 4K/2160p at 60 fps: recommended bitrate | 4K/2160p at 60 fps: minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
For the applicable settings and other resolutions, consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table. YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Its guidance also recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That is headroom above the stream’s bitrate, not a substitute for a stable connection; network disruptions can still break the broadcast. YouTube says 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency, and low latency is unavailable for 4K.

A successful OBS launch or encoder failover test alone does not prove that one PC will restart and resume a stream after a full power loss. YouTube’s failover guidance concerns a configured backup encoder. Test the exact equipment and workflow you intend to use, under controlled conditions.
- Test the broadcast before interrupting anything. Set up the encoder in advance, preview the stream, check stream health and verify that the expected broadcast appears in Live Control Room.
- Confirm local recording behavior. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. During a test, check that the local recording file is being created and growing as expected.
- Test encoder failover separately if you have a backup encoder. YouTube suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. This checks the configured backup path, not a single-computer power recovery.
- Test your outage sequence. With the stream configured as intended, check what happens when power is interrupted and restored to the source, PC, UPS and network equipment. Observe whether the PC boots, whether the network returns first, whether OBS connects and whether YouTube starts the broadcast or waits for an operator.
- Repeat with realistic timing. A brief test may not expose a router that takes longer to restart than the PC. Record what fails and adjust the order, delay or manual recovery plan before leaving the stream unattended.
YouTube’s recommendations for setup, preview, stream-health monitoring and failover testing are in its Streaming tips. No universal recovery time follows from these steps; firmware, operating system, encoder, network and YouTube state all affect the result.

Plan for long-running loops and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, including streams at 1440p and 2160p. Streams that run longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a record of a continuous loop, do not assume a single long YouTube broadcast will produce a complete archive. Plan local recording and any session breaks around your archive needs (Archive live streams).
Troubleshoot the common recovery failures
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The PC stays off after power returns. | Firmware power recovery is disabled, set to remain off, or unsupported by the system. | Check the model’s BIOS/UEFI documentation and its AC power recovery setting. Verify the PC itself can start after a controlled loss and restoration of power. |
| The PC boots, but OBS does not open. | The startup shortcut or scheduled task is missing, misconfigured or running in a different user context. | Sign in normally and test the startup mechanism. Confirm the shortcut or task launches the intended OBS installation and loads the expected profile and scene collection. |
| OBS opens but does not connect. | The network may still be offline, or the initial connection attempt may have failed. | Check modem/router status and internet access. Test a delay or retry approach; keep a manual intervention plan because reconnect behavior is not guaranteed after a failed first attempt. |
| YouTube receives a feed, but the broadcast does not go live. | The stream’s auto-start behavior or Live Control Room workflow may require an additional action. | Review the stream’s auto-start setting and confirm whether the selected workflow requires “Go live” in Live Control Room. |
| The stream disconnects repeatedly or reports poor health. | The internet connection may be unstable, or upload capacity may be too close to the stream bitrate. | Check YouTube stream health, encoder output and available upload capacity. Keep the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom and ensure the bitrate matches the selected codec. |
| The broadcast resumes but there is no complete YouTube archive. | The stream may have exceeded YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive window. | Use local recording as a backup and plan session management if a complete archive is required. |
